TODAY WE START OUR JOURNEY IN
GROWING TOGETHER
YOU JUST NEED TO LEARN HOWTO DEVELOP “GRIT”
Being brave means overcoming obstacles
YOU CAN BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE
Everyone will occasionally struggle – what is important is how you react to the struggle.
Will you give up? Or will you keep going no matter what? The choice is yours!
“You have extraordinary power within you to overcome life's difficult challenges.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita
Overcoming Obsticels
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE TRY HARDER THAN OTHERS?
ASK TWO QUESTIONS
Why do some people accomplish more than others of equal (or greater) talent?
“Grit” is perseverance and passion for long-term goals.
“Grit” means working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining both effort and interest over years and years – despite failure, adversity and even just stalls in progress.
The gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his advantage is stamina. Angela L. Duckworth, University of Pennsylvania
THEY HAVE DEFINED GRITTHEY HAVE DETERMINATION
THEY HAVE DEVELOPED PERSEVERANCE
Talent is about practice.Talent takes effort.Talent requires a good coach.Talent is about hard work.
HOW DO I GET TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING?
You’re just born that way – you are naturally (athletic, good at math, good at singing, good at English…)
Recent research shows that it’s not in your genes! It is about developing your talents.
• Think of a person you know (or know of) who practiced and practiced a skill until he or she became proficient.
• Who is the person?
• What did he or she do?
Think of a person you know who has
“GRIT”.
Grittier adults complete more years of education.
Grittier college undergraduates have higher GPAs than their peers, even if their SAT scores are lower.
Research Findings
Think and Respond Why do you think that “grittier” students
have higher GPAs than students with less “GRIT”?
Think silently for a moment, and I will call on a few students to share your responses.
Achievement is the product of talent AND effort.
Effort is not just intensity (how hard you work) but also consistency (do you keep going?) and duration (how long do you work?)
