Title III, Native American  and Native Alaska Children in School (NAM) program

Purpose

Assists American Indian and Alaska Native English learner (EL) students in:

• attaining English language proficiency• meeting the same challenging state academic content achievement standards

• supports the teaching and studying of Native languages consistent with section 103of the Native American Languages Act (25U.S.C. 2902)

Eligible Applicants

Elementary, secondary, and postsecondary schools primarily for Native American children (including Alaska Native children), are eligible applicants under this program: 

(1) An Indian tribe.(2) A tribally sanctioned educational authority.(3) A Native Hawaiian or Native American Pacific Islander native language educational organization.(4) An elementary school or secondary school that is operated or  funded by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), or a consortium of such schools.

Eligible Applicants

(5) An elementary school or secondary school operated under a contract with or grant from the BIE, in consortium with another such school or a tribal or community organization.(6) An elementary school or secondary school operated by the BIE and an institution of higher education, in consortium with an elementary school or secondary school operated under a contract with or grant from the BIE or a tribal or community organization.

• 21 funded projects

• States:  AK, MT, ND, NM, OK, OR, SD, WA, WI

• Number of students served: 4,765

• Grades/level: Birth to College

• Range of Award Per Year: $175,000‐$300,000

• Total Per Year: $4,272,819

Special activities addressed by these projects include:

• heritage language and culture‐based curricula 

• research‐based literacy model programs

• curriculum development

• community‐based literacy instruction summer     camps

• professional development leading toward Bilingual‐ESL teacher  and Native Language certification

• parent education college programs in technology

• indigenous language materials development• Cultural Sensitivity Training for all teachers, implemented by the Tribal Cultural Support Center with the assistance of Tribal Elders

Tribal college partners will encourage parent and family involvement in the program by coordinating family eventsand workshops to discuss how they can help students succeed in college.
