Development of a resorbable sealing patch for the prevention of anastomotic leakage after

colorectal cancer surgical treatment

Colorectal cancer:

•  Second most common form of cancer in Europe (2.9 million new cases/year)

•  Surgical treatment: resection of the affected bowel and suture of the extremities to restore the normal transit (Anastomosis)

•  Most feared complication: ANASTOMOTIC LEAKAGE (up to 23% of cases à mortality 39%)

A  biopolymeric  bioactive  patch  wrapped  around  the  sutured  part  of  the  intestine  capable  of  inducing  a  faster  tissue  regeneration,  thus

promoting  a                                                      safe  ananstomosis  in  the  critical  period  of  tissue  healing
