Why Start a Podcast?• It’s an easy way to produce and consume long-form content.

• Podcasts are typically interview-based and lead to greater collaboration.

• It is a low-cost marketing tool.

• It’s easy.

How do I get started?• You will need three main things to start a podcast:

• Recording Equipment and Software

• A Hosting Platform

• A Plan

• Mixing Board

• Audio Cables

• Microphones

• Foam Mic Covers

Recording Equipment

• Microphone Tripods

• Headphones

• 1/4'' Headphone jack

• Audio Editing Software

Hosting Platform• Why do I need a hosting platform for my podcast and what does

it do?

• A hosting service houses and distributes your podcast to other directories and libraries. Think Spotify, SoundCloud, IHeartRadio and so on.

• There are many services on the market, Libsyn, Simplecast, Captivate, you name it.

• Now that you know the technical basics of what goes into a podcast you’ll need to develop a plan. • What will be the topic of your podcast?• Who will you interview? Will you interview anyone?• What will you name it and how will it be branded?

• NYS Manufacturing Now is a podcast designed to tell the stories of manufacturers and hardware startups across NYS.

The Plan

Inviting Guests• Start with people you know and are comfortable with.• Don’t assume they understand what you’re asking them to do.• Get to “yes”. Answer these questions before they ask them. • How long will the podcast take?• How and where will we record this?• How much preparation will I need to do?

• Tune-in to WFIM (What’s In It For Me?)

Formulating Questions• Some are for your guests – and some are for you.• Ask yourself . . . • What I am trying to achieve with this podcast? • What will make this podcast worth listening to?

• Ask your guest . . . • Some basic questions that you ask all your guests.• Some specific questions based on your research.

• Will you share questions with your guest in advance?

Preparing Guests• Remember that some have not done anything like this

before. • Don’t jump right in. Chat until you get a flow.• Remind them what to expect.• Laugh to reduce stress.• If you do your job well, they’ll forget you’re podcasting.• Have fun with it.

Conducting Interviews• Remember to set the stage.• Stick with the script to start.• Pick up on something they said to dig deeper• “I like what you said about . . . ”• “You mentioned that . . . ”

• Add context to jargon. • Close smoothly.• Say “thank you”.
