seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter...
Jerry Boland, Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
I have received several statements and recommendations in recent days from the Center for Disease Control, The USCCB, the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Cook County Board of Health regarding public safety during this time regarding the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
I take issues regarding public safety very seriously. Considering my desire to do everything possible to best support the health and well being of our parishioners and visitors, I am taking the following precautions:
1) Continue the suspension of the distribution of Holy Communion via the chalice.
2) Saliva can be a very potent form of transmission of the virus. Given the frequency of direct contact with saliva in the distribution of Holy Communion on the tongue, we need to all receive Holy Communion in open hands for the time being.
3) We need to refrain from physical contact during the Sign of Peace (note: The Sign of Peace can be exchanged without physical contact).
4) Refrain from holding hands during the Lord’s Prayer.
5) Holy Water fonts in the Church will be empty; however, Holy Water will be available in the sacristy.
6) Hand sanitizer will be available at all the exits.
7) Our maintenance staff will double down on efforts to wipe down surfaces with anti-bacterial agents, i.e. pews, door handles, bathrooms.
If you are not feeling well, you are not obligated to attend Mass. The Catholic Catechism (2181) allows you to miss Mass as a result of illness. We are hoping to make live stream access to the Mass available for those who are not able to attend Mass.
The CDC recommends the following actions to protect yourself and others from transmitting the Coronavirus:
1) Stay home if you are sick.
2) Wash your hands often with soap and water.
3) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
4) Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
5) Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
6) Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue then throw the tissue away. If tissues are not available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
Health offi cials have identifi ed the following symptoms of the Coronavirus:
1) Runny nose
2) Headache
3) Cough
4) Sore throat
5) Fever
6) A general feeling of being unwell
These are anxious times but with everyone’s cooperation, we can help make OLPH a safer environment for worship and the myriad of activities that take place on our campus every day of the week.
I will continue to monitor recommendations and take further precautions if they are called for.
I invite you to join me in holding in prayer all those who have been affected by the fl u or the Coronavirus. We need to pray for the well-being of all healthcare providers who are on the front line of attending to the sick. We need to pray for those involved in identifying a vaccine to combat the Coronavirus.
May your Lenten journey be blessed,
Rev. Jerry Boland
Thoughts on the
Sunday Scriptures
Lent is all about change, and change is usually not easy. In order to change, we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise.
Jesus changes, is transfi gured, right before the eyes of his disciples. Th e Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfi gured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God.
What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? Th ese questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion.

seek, share, rejoice - fr. kizza in uganda...
Fr. Kizza in UgandaIn the February 2nd Bulletin, you read about the Parish Engagement Ministry's Centennial Challenge to raise money to purchase sports equipment for Fr. Patrick Kizza to donate to the local schools and athletic teams in Uganda. You may remember that someone at Wilson Sporting Goods heard about this initiative and Wilson then donated 40 soccer balls, 30 volleyballs, and 30 basketballs, plus pumps, to the cause.
Although the individuals at Wilson who made this donation possible would like to remain anonymous, they did comment, “Thanks for giving us this chance to do something good. This also allows us the chance to do what we love to do - enable more play.”
Fr. Kizza left on Saturday, Feb. 1, for Uganda with fi ve large duffel bags and suitcases to carry the balls and pumps. Ever since his arrival, he has been emailing us photos of the smiling faces of the students and athletes who have all been so appreciative of the donations. Here are just a sampling of the images from Uganda.

Stepping Out Together MinistryFirst outing: Wednesday, Mar. 25Calling men and women ages 21 to 121 to participate in a new ministry called, Stepping Out Together. Our vision for this ministry is to plan events for those who fi nd themselves going solo and would like to join others for food, fun and friendship. Whether it is going to dinner, attending plays or movies, hiking, cycling, wine tastings, etc., everything is more fun together.
Our fi rst planned outing is dinner and bowling beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 25 at Pinstripes in Northbrook.
If you have questions or would like to join us on the 25th, please contact Pat Marziani at dmarz@prodigy.net or by texting 847-366-8529.
The Sharing MinistryAlmsgiving – Food for the NeedyLent fi nds us challenging ourselves with fasting. Our brief periods of self-imposed hunger are eased in knowing that they are only for a prescribed time. Imagine the hunger being a steady way of life!
Be mindful of the poor who live with hunger on a daily basis. Donate to our Lenten food drive. Food can be delivered to the church entries, the sharing room or through the kids during the offertory at weekend Mass.
Too busy to shop for the food drive? Mail a donation, made out to OLPH Church, indicating Needy Family Fund in the memo line, to Lou Marohn, 2132 Fir Street, Glenview, IL 60025. Food will be purchased in case lots to maximize your donation.
St. Sabina Academy Bright Futures Benefi tSaturday, Mar. 28, 6 – 11 pm at St. Sabina AcademySt. Sabina Academy is a “beacon of light” in the community they serve. The academy’s mission is to provide each child with a quality catholic education in a safe and nurturing environment.
Many students would not be able to afford the benefi t of a Catholic education without fi nancial assistance. Please support this benefi t by attending the event, purchasing a raffl e ticket, donating a raffl e item, or assist in sponsoring the event.
For more information contact Bob Hicks: roberthicks@ameritech.net.

seek, share, rejoice - sharing ministry...
Trader Joe’s Food Rescue Project
The Sharing Ministry has been the blessed recipient of Trader Joe’s donations from the Glenview and Northbrook stores for many, many years. Glenview’s store donates every day of the week but Saturday, and Northbrook’s store donates on the weekends. These donations add up, and in 2019 we received tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of donations from Trader Joe’s!
We enlist a big team of drivers to make this happen. Ed Krupa and Bill Thome have kept this team going on a daily basis for the past 18 years, both showing up daily at the Glenview store and enlisting nine others to help in rotation. Most recently, Jim Butler has been leading this effort. It can take as many as four SUVs to load all the produce, meat and bread that is offered to us.
This weekday team delivers the Trader Joe’s donations to local organizations such as Sacred Heart Convent in Wilmette for their outreach to the poor, including the First Baptist Mobile Food Pantry in Zion. Northfi eld Township Food Pantry, Niles Township Food Pantry and the Glenview Youth Center are also recipients.
Volunteers Bob and Patty Shannahan have been delivering weekend donations from Trader Joe’s Northbrook to the Sharing Room for the past 18 years! Every Saturday and every Sunday they pull up with a van-load of food and load up the Sharing Room cooler and freezers. Sr. Paulanne is able to serve her local clients through these donations; the balance makes its way to inner-city outlets we serve.
Regina Banks, a minister serving Action Coalition, Englewood, pulls produce from the Trader Joe’s weekend deliveries and creates and delivers food bags fi lled with healthy options to the needy in her community. The clients she serves are delighted by her weekly visits with nutrition and hope for a brighter future. She reports that people are so grateful for this food which helps them maintain better weight and improves a variety of health conditions. Without these deliveries they would be eating little, if any, fresh foods and meat.
OLPH Parishioner, Sarah Hill pulls up to the Sharing Room early Tuesday mornings and Lou Marohn and Mike Martinsen load up her vehicle with remaining donations for delivery to the St. James food pantry.
Cathy Moore, pantry director at St. James, is ever so grateful for the meat, fresh produce and bread that has been arriving through us for all these years. Fresh produce is otherwise a luxury at the pantry and the homeless whom they serve with these donations say it is the best lunch they receive anywhere. Some clients make it a point to visit the pantry exclusively on Tuesdays, knowing the treat in store for them with fresh foods, so hard to come by when you are poor. One family considers the Trader Joe’s bread they receive an absolute delicacy.
Cathy is grateful that she is able to provide these donations to her clients, 60% of whom are seniors, “I take pride in providing healthy food choices”. Cathy also indicates that the volume of Trader Joe’s food we deliver allows her to better allocate her funding to purchase other needed staples.
Be sure to remember the generosity of Trader Joe’s and mention our appreciation to the store manager, Paul Bolda, on your next shopping visit.

OLPH Book ClubThursday, Mar. 12, 7:00 pmThe OLPH Book Club will have its fi rst meeting Mar. 12, 7:00 pm in the Dussman room in the Parish Center. At the fi rst meeting we will give the dates for the meetings in April and May.
Our book this year is, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.
All the Light We Cannot Seebegins during the fi nal year of World War II. Hours before Allied airplanes bomb the French city of Saint-Malo, they drop leafl ets that warn the inhabitants to evacuate.
The two protagonists, 16-year-old Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a French girl, and 18-year-old Werner Pfennig, a German soldier, are introduced.
Read how the two are pivotal to the story line. You will fi nd their stories provocative and compelling. Two people encounter each other during the horrors of war. They bring “light” to a world darkened by war. (Cliff Notes)

The Parish Engagement Ministry hosts
Lisa Fortini-Campbell“FIRST THE LAUNDRY, THEN THE LAUNDRY”Wednesday, March 18, at 7:00 pm in Hickey HallThey say, “a mother’s work is never done,” but, truly, no one’s work is ever done. The dishes washed today need to be washed again tomorrow. Nor does any lawn ever stay mowed, no car ever stays repaired, and no musical instrument ever stays in tune. Such is the nature of things. So, if we’re going to live with things, then we need to be good at repairing, refurbishing and polishing them—over and over again.
What’s true of the laundry, the car and the piano is also true of our relationships. We don’t stay in perfect harmony with each other very long, nor do we stay in perfect harmony in our most important relationship of all—with God. Something is always pulling us apart. But it doesn’t have to stay that way, not if we can get good at putting things back together again, and again, and again.
“God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son“ to repair the breach between himself and humankind. And if we learn to master four essential “tools” of everyday relationship repair, we can do our part in this great project of salvation.
Join us for an evening of refl ection, discussion and inspiration

Creation Care Ministry“What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” Pope Francis: Laudato Si’ #160.
Remember that one of our Centennial Challenges to help cherish our precious earth is to plant 100 trees! If you have no room in your yard, here is the next best thing. Please visit the arborday.org website and sign up. For a mere $10 you can plant ten trees.
If only ten families sign up (what a great use of your allowance kids!), we hit our goal. But just think if 100 families signed up---then 1000 trees and if a third of our Parish, 1000 families signed up—10,000 trees! Wouldn’t that be wonderful and show an appreciation for God’s Creation. Let us know if you sign up by texting Chris at 312-285-0587. Come on OLPH, we can do this together!
NOW IS THE TIME. THE TIME FOR TREES.You can help restore trees for future generations in the following ways by clicking https://shop.arborday.org/content.aspx?page=memberships
• Rain Forest Rescue: With your membership of only $10, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant 10 trees to help restore threatened tropical rain forests (Australia and elsewhere).
• Our Nation’s Forests: With a $10 membership, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant 10 trees in your honor in one of America’s forests in need.
• At Your Home: With a membership of as little as $10 you can receive 10 free trees (bare-root seedlings, 6-12 inches high) shipped to your home address. At member prices plus shipping cost, the Arbor Foundation also has trees, which grow well in Illinois/Indiana (2-3 feet high, potted in a one-gallon container).

seek, share, rejoice - our parish school...
We began to “Prepare Our Hearts For Jesus” on Ash Wednesday when K – 8th Grade gathered for Mass. Fr. Jerry encouraged us to clear out the clutter and do some spring cleaning in our hearts so we can grow in our faith this Lenten season. Through prayer, sacrifice, and kind acts, we will grow in our love for Christ . . . Let’s make this a great Lent!
