Feast of Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Corpus Christi
My Dear Brothers and Sisters, today we celebrate the Mystery of the Eucharist “The Body and Blood of Christ –
Corpus Christi”. In this time of our quarantine with no masses that you can attend this Feast reminds us poignantly
of what we miss most, the physical union that we have with our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is in the Eucharist that Jesus
joins his body to ours in the reception of the Eucharist. This great mystery of the Eucharist allows us to unite with the
Divine here on earth. My brothers and sisters I know that each of you pines for that union. Your Spiritual
Communion gives you a type of union with Jesus, one as close as we can come to outside of the physical reception of
the true body and blood of Jesus.
We do not yet know when we will be able to resume weekday masses let alone Sunday Masses. While this separation
has lasted so long it will come to end. Hopefully we will soon be able to once more join together to celebrate the Mass
and receive the Holy Eucharist. When we do there will be some changes. The biggest will be that we will not be
receiving the consecrated wine from the cup. So, it is good to be reminded about the mystery of the Sacrament of the
Eucharist.
The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us that in the Sacrament of the Eucharist Jesus’ Body and Blood are fully
contained in both the consecrated bread and the consecrated wine. Thus, if one receives only the consecrated host one
receives both the body and blood of Christ. If one receives only the consecrated wine one receives both the body and
blood of Christ. Thus, just because we will not be drinking from the cup does not mean we are not receiving the Body
and the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
After the Second Vatican Council the Church decided that it was a more visible symbol to receive both the consecrated
host and consecrated wine at mass. It was never intended that people should confuse the two and think that the host
was only the Body of Christ and the Wine the Blood of Christ. For this reason, each year we celebrate this Feast of
the Body and Blood of Christ as a reminder of the great mystery and gift that is the Holy Eucharist.
The Mystery of the Sacrament of the Eucharist proclaims the truth of transubstantiation. Transubstantiation means
that the bread and wine truly become the actual body and blood of Christ. When the priest, acting in the person of
Jesus at mass, says the words of consecration Jesus becomes truly present in the Eucharist.
This is what makes us different from our protestant brothers and sisters, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
For our Protestant brothers and sisters, the bread and wine either only represents Jesus or they believe the bread and
wine becomes Jesus’ body and blood only during the service. For them when the service is over the bread and wine
returns to just bread and wine.
But, for us, as Catholics, we know that Jesus is truly present under the form of bread and wine and remains in the bread
and wine for as long as the consecrated bread and wine exists. Thus, we reverence Jesus’ presence in the Tabernacle
in Church because he is truly there in His Body and Blood.
Parish Support
Once more I want to thank all of you who are responding to our needs and have dropped off, mailed-in, used Parish
Giving electronic giving or the gofundme website to make your contributions to the parish. We encourage everyone
to make their contributions to the parish by mail, by drop-off or by electronic or gofundme giving.
May God bless you,
Fr. Stephen Cinque 586

others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful
and generous with our gifts, serve a twofold purpose. One, it
helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two, it helps us
strengthen each other’s relationship with God the Father, Jesus
and the Holy Spirit. It become our roadmap to Heaven. Let’s
help each other get there”
