Invocation May each of us assembled here today enjoy the many offerings of Rotary.

May we abide by the rules we have established - those of trust, fellowship and ethics.

May we place Service above Self, in our daily endeavors.

May we always test ourselves and our efforts to be sure they are the truth, good for all concerned, of benefit to man-kind, and provide peace and under-standing.

Amen

Today January 31 February 7 February 14

The I Didn't Know That article about P.J. and his history of horsing around, catches attention quickly. Karol announces she had a neighbor who loved horses and I recall my parents

met, before I was born, because of horseback riding. Responding to President Sherry's bell, Bob McD leads the prayer, Mike Moody calls it the Four-May Test, then asks us to place right hand over left heart for the pledge. Don Roll leads the song just before, "Let's Eat!" reverberates Rotarians and Guests into the chow line. As conversation wanders to trivia and the Charity Quiz Challenge, Cheffy collects for Honor Flight PolioPlus. It's a packed house; Sergeant Don intro-duces guests, Karol, Leo, John, Bryan, Don and his son Rich. We sing for many birthdays and anniversaries. Stephen reminds all to sell tickets for the January 26 Visani event. Rick Hayman will be in Haiti at that time, but generously donates ten tickets to the club. The Rotary Group Study Exchange team from (South) Korea visits District 6960 in March. Areas Seven and Eight are in need of a GSE Coordinator and five host families. Coming on February 26 is the Charlotte Harbor Bluegrass Bash, Mike Moody reminds us. Benefitting the Drew Lisby Foundation, the best way to buy tickets is by visiting ww.charlotteharborbluegrass.com. Headliner and two-time Grammy winner Jim Lauderdale joins two local groups, The Florida Bluegrass Express and HWY 41 South to Bash The Blue Grass.

By the time you read this, it will be history, though it should be said Brian B r u n d e r m a n reminded us Har-b o r H e i g h t s Peace River Ro-tary's Saturday Golf Tourney, had a $300 first prize and José organized Sunday's Pick-i-Nic, complete with Boca Burgers and marshmallow golf. President Sherry's request that Happy Dol-lars stay brief falls on deaf ears as they flow for Son and Daughter, Son, The Newspaper, Bas-ketball, Daughter, Four Sons, Basketball, Quiz-zer and Scooter. There is no mention of Te-bow. J o e R e z e k i n t r o -d u c e d Richard R a m o s who tells about the curricula at Herald Court Centre's Florida Gulf Coast University. With 4,000 square feet, four classrooms and a conference facility, there is something for eve-ryone. They will even teach you to, "Think Like Leonardo de Vinci." Following 50/50, Chris leads us in the Four-Way Test and I walk to the parking lot to find my car needing some expensive repair work. Today it runs just fine.

Our next Bingo nights are January 26, February 12 and February 23. Money raised through this project funds three scholarships.

THE

FOUR-WAY TEST

Of things we

think, say or do First, Is it the TRUTH?

Second, Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Third, Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Fourth, Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I took up long-distance bike rid-ing. Starting with day rides of up to 100 miles to get in shape, I did several charity rides of one or two days up to 150 miles. In 1991 I signed up for my first Bike VA, a five-day 300+ mile ride in the Shenandoah. I quickly

found I was not in as good shape as I thought, but I made it up and over the mountains. The last day I managed 110 miles.

In 1992, I again signed up, but this time it was a coastal route, much easier. The first day out we stopped at a winery at 8:30 am; now that’s the way to start a day. Each day had routes varying from 45 to 100+ miles, through different small coastal towns. We started in Colonial Beach and ended in Jamestown. We would pedal from one town to another and saw lots of scenic places.

The ride was more challenging in 1993 as we started in Bristol, Tennessee, spending five days in the backbone of the Blue Ridge, includ-ing a climb of Mount Walker at 3400 feet. Then

it was on to more small towns and more hills, including the town of Rural Retreat, home of Dr. Pepper, then to Crocket and Cripple Creek.

Later we rode along the New River Trail from Galax to Fries, one of the best parts of the trip. Then on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Chateau Morriset, a winery and restaurant on top of the Blue Ridge. From there it was mostly downhill to Floyd and the end of the tour.

In all I did Bike VA six years and would love to be able to do it again. I know age is not a de-terrent as the very first one I did in the moun-tains I rode with two 70+ men who had no prob-lems.
