d‟Aubigny/Fitzalan (Earls of Arundel)

The descent is from Alice Fitzalan, the daughter of

Richard Fitzalan, 10th Earl of Arundel (1305-75/76) and

Eleanor of Lancaster (1318-71/72). Alice married Thomas

Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent (d. 1397). One of their great-

great grandchildren was King Richard III (1452-85).

Crichton (of Sanquhar, Lords Crichton of Sanquhar from 1487/88 and

Earls of Dumfries from 1663)

The descent is from of Sir Robert Crichton of Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire

who died 1478-79. The descent is from two of his daughters, Elizabeth

who married William Douglas of Drumlanrig, Durisdeer,

Dumfriesshire and Margaret who married Sir David Herries of

Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire.

Home (of that Ilk, Lords of Home from 1473, Earls of Home from

1604/05)

The descent is from Alison Home, daughter of Alexander Home, 3rd

Lord Home and Katherine Stirling. Alexander Home was executed

for treason in 1516. Alison married Henry Wardlaw of Torrie

(mentioned below under Wardlaw of Torrie).

de Lacy (Lords of Meath)

The descent is from Egidia de Lacy, daughter of Walter de Lacy, Lord

of Meath (d. 24 February 1240/41). She married Richard de Burgh,

Lord of Connaught.

Le Bigod (Earls of Norfolk)

The descent is from Isabel le Bigod who married John fitz Geoffrey,

Lord of Shere (d. 23 November 1258). Isabel was the daughter of Hugh

le Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk (and one of the witnesses to Magna

Carta) and Maud Marshal, the daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl

of Pembroke (of the second creation, see below).

Dunbar (Earls of Dunbar and Moray)

The descent is from Margaret Dunbar (d. Bef. 13 April 1552) who

married Alexander Stewart, 5th of Garlies. Margaret was the

daughter of Sir Patrick Dunbar of Clugston, Kirkcowan,

Wigtownshire (a 9th great grandson of William the Lion, King of

Scotland). There are two descents from Margaret‟s grandchildren,

Alexander Stewart, 6th of Garlies (d.1597) who married Christian

Douglas, and secondly, Agnes Stewart who married Sir Andrew

Agnew of Lochnaw (d.1616).

There is also a descent from Sir Alexander Dunbar (d. 10 March

1497/98) of Westfield who was an illegitimate son of James

Dunbar, 4th Earl of Moray (of the second creation) and Isobel

Innes. Alexander Dunbar married Isobel Sutherland, daughter of

Alexander Sutherland, Lord of Duffus. Alexander Dunbar was a

great-great-great grandson of Thomas Randolph, 1st Earl of

Moray (of the first creation) and used the same coat of arms (i.e.

of Randolph), depicted at right. Sir James Dunbar, a descendant

of Alexander Dunbar and Isobel Sutherland was created a

Baronet in 1814 as Dunbar of Boath.

Abernethy (Lord Abernethy)

The descent is from Mary Abernethy of Ballinbreich, Fifeshire (d.

Bef. 19 November 1355) who married Sir David Lindsay of Crawford,

Lanarkshire. Mary was the daughter of Alexander Abernethy.

Gordon (of Lochinvar)

There are at least two descents from Gordon. Grisel Gordon of

Lochinvar, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire married Sir Alexander

Stewart, 1st Earl of Galloway on 16 October 1600. Another descent is

through Katherine Gordon, the grandaunt of Grisel. Katherine

married Patrick Agnew (d.1514) of Lochnaw, Leswalt, Wigtownshire.

Kennedy (Lords Kennedy from 1450, Earls of Cassillis from 1509 and

Marquesses of Ailsa from 1831)

The descent is through Margaret Kennedy of Culzean, Kirkoswald,

Ayrshire (a 6 greats granddaughter of King Robert III of Scotland),

daughter of Sir Thomas Kennedy (d.1602) and Elizabeth MacGill of

Cranstoun Riddel, Cranston, Midlothian. Margaret married Sir

Patrick Agnew, 1st Baronet of Lochnaw (d.1661).

Earls of Strathearn

There are a number of descents from this family. One descent is from

Isabella of Strathearn, daughter of Malise, 8th Earl of Strathearn

(d.Bef.1357). Isabella married Sir William Sinclair of Roslin (d. Aft. 13

September 1358).

Douglas (Earls of Douglas, Angus, Morton

and Mar, later Earls, Marquesses and

Dukes of Queensbury)

There are many descents from Douglas.

There is descent from Margaret Douglas,

daughter of James Douglas, 3rd Earl of

Morton (d .1548) and Katherine Stewart

(illegitimate daughter of James IV of

Scotland).

There is descent from the Earls of Douglas

through Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of

Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas

and Duke of Touraine (d.1424), his arms are depicted

below at right. Elizabeth Douglas married (inter alia) William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of

Orkney.

There is also descent from Douglas of Drumlanrig (a line descending

from William Douglas, an illegitimate son of the 2nd Earl of Douglas).

Christian Douglas, a daughter of Sir James Douglas (1498-1578) married

Sir Alexander Stewart, 6th of Garlies and they were the parents of Sir

Alexander Galloway, 1st Earl of Galloway (d.1649).

Hay (Baronets of Park from 1663)

The descent is through Ann (Lilias) Hay the daughter of Dr. James

Hay of Dumfries. James was the son of Sir Charles Hay, 2nd Baronet

of Park (1662-1733). Jean (or Jane) Hay, the sister of Sir Thomas Hay,

1st Baronet of Park (d.c.1666) married Sir Andrew Agnew, 3rd Baronet

of Lochnaw and was the mother of Grisel Agnew who married Sir

Charles Hay, 2nd Baronet of Park (her cousin). Ann (Lilias) Hay married Charles

Stewart of Shambellie (mentioned below under Stewart of Shambellie).

Forrester (Lords Forrester of Corstorphine from 1633-1654)

The descent is through Elizabeth Forrester (d. 16 March

1578-79) of Corstorphine, Midlothian. She married David

MacGill (d. 13 February 1595-96) of Cranstoun Riddel,

Cranston, Midlothian and they were the parents of

Elizabeth MacGill who married Sir Thomas Kennedy

(mentioned above under Kennedy).

Hugh of Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester

Hugh of Kevelioc (d. 30 June 1181) was the great grandson of King

Henry I of England (descended illegitimately). He married Bertrade

de Montfort (d.1227). There are at least four different descents from

Hugh of Kevelioc.

Lindsay (Earls of Crawford)

The descent is from Euphemia Lindsay (d. Aft. 1405) of Crawford,

Lanarkshire, daughter of James Lindsay (d.1397), Lord of Crawford

and Symington. Euphemia married Sir John Herries (d. 27 March

1420) of Terregles, Kirkcudbrightshire and great grandfather of Sir

David Herries mentioned above under Crichton.

Stewart (Earls of Galloway from 1623)

As given under Gordon (above), Grisel Gordon of Lochinvar, Dalry,

Kirkcudbrightshire married Sir Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of

Galloway on 16 October 1600. Our descent is from their daughter,

Ann (or Agnes) Stewart who married Sir Andrew Agnew, 2nd

Baronet of Lochnaw (d.1671). Of interest, Sir Alexander Stewart was

an 8th great grandfather of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965).

Boyd (Lords Boyd from 1451/54 and Earls of Kilmarnock from 1661)

There are two descents through Margaret Boyd of Kilmarnock,

Ayrshire, daughter of Thomas Boyd (d. 9 July 1439). Margaret

married Alexander Montgomerie, Lord Montgomerie of Ardrossan,

Ayrshire. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Kennedy, 2nd Lord

Kennedy and great great grandfather of the Sir Thomas Kennedy

(mentioned above under Kennedy). Their son, Alexander Montgomerie married

Elizabeth Hepburn of Hailes, and were the 3rd great grandparents of Christian Douglas

(mentioned above under Dunbar).

There is also a descent through Marion (Margaret) Boyd (d.1559), mistress to King

James IV. She was the daughter of Archibald Boyd of Bonshaw and Nariston, who was

the son of Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd (he was the son of Thomas Boyd mentioned

above).

Campbell (Earls and later Dukes of Argyll)

There are two descents. Firstly, from Isabel Campbell (1483-1529), she

was the daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll. Isabel

married Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassillis and they were the

grand parents of the Sir Thomas Kennedy mentioned above under

Kennedy.

Secondly, from Isabel Campbell‟s aunt, Helen Campbell, (sister of the 2nd Earl of Argyll),

who married Hugh Montgomerie (d. September 1545), 1st Earl of Eglinton.

Borthwick (Lords of Borthwick from circa 1450)

The descent is from Agnes Borthwick, daughter of William Borthwick,

3rd Lord Borthwick (d. 20 May 1503). Agnes married David Kennedy,

1st Earl of Cassillis (d. 9 September 1513). They were the great

grandparents of the Sir Thomas Kennedy mentioned above under

Kennedy.

Agnew (Baronets of Lochnaw from 1629)

There are multiple descents from the Agnews of Lochnaw, see above

under Dunbar, Gordon, Kennedy and Hay. Also see below under

Vaux.

Keith

The descent is from Margaret Keith, daughter of William Keith (d. Bet.

13 May 1407 - 2 June 1413) of Keith, East Lothian. Margaret married

James Lindsay (d.1397), Lord of Crawford and Symington who is

mentioned above under Lindsay.

Fraser (of Touch Fraser, Oliver Castle and Frednaught)

There are at least four descents. Firstly, from Margaret Fraser of

Touch Fraser, Stirlingshire who married the William Keith (mentioned

above under Keith) on 3 May 1351. Margaret was the daughter of John

Fraser who was the son of Alexander Fraser (d.1332) and Mary Bruce

(the sister of King Robert I of Scotland).

The second descent is from Mary (or Margaret) Fraser, daughter of Simon Fraser

(d.1306), Knight of Oliver Castle. The Margaret Fraser who married William Keith was

the third cousin, twice removed of Mary Fraser. Mary married Gilbert Hay of

Locherworth and they were great great grandparents of William Hay, Knight of

Yester who is mentioned below under Hay of Yester.

The third descent is from Matilda Fraser, daughter of James Fraser, Knight of

Frednaught (Matilda was a second cousin to the Margaret Fraser

named above who married William Keith and a third cousin, twice

removed of the Mary Fraser who married Simon Fraser mentioned

above). Matilda married Alexander Dunbar, son of John Dunbar, 1st

Earl of Moray and Marjorie Stewart (daughter of Robert II). Matilda

and Alexander Dunbar were great-great-great grandparents of the

Margaret Dunbar mentioned above under Dunbar.

Finally there is a descent from Euphemia Fraser, daughter of William Fraser of

Dundee and granddaughter of Hugh Fraser (d. Bet. 30 March 1407 - 30 March 1410),

Lord of Lovat. This Hugh Fraser was the 2nd cousin of the Matilda Fraser mentioned

above. The arms used by the Frasers of Lovat are depicted at right.

Sinclair (Earls of Orkney and later Earls of Caithness)

There are multiple descents from Sinclair. One descent is from

Catherine Sinclair, daughter of William Sinclair, 3rd Earl of Orkney.

Catherine Sinclair married Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany

(d.1485), son of James II, King of Scotland.

Clare (Lords of Clare, Earls of Gloucester, Hertford and Pembroke)

The descent is from four of Gilbert FitzRichard (d. Bet. 1114-1117), Lord

of Clare‟s children. Richard de Clare (d. 1136), Gilbert de Clare (d.

1147/48), 1st Earl of Pembroke, Rohese FitzGilbert and Adelize de Clare

(d. 1163) are all ancestors.

de Vere (Earls of Oxford)

There are at least three descents. Firstly, from Rohese de Vere (d. Aft.

21 October 1166), daughter of Aubrey de Vere (d. 1141) and Adelize de

Clare (d. 1163), mentioned above under Clare.

Secondly, there is also descent from Juliana de Vere (the sister of

Rohese). Juliana married Hugh Bigod (d. Bef. 9 March 1176/77), 1st Earl of Norfolk.

A more recent descent is from Joan de Vere, daughter of Richard de Vere, 5th Earl of

Oxford (d.1296). Joan married William de Warenne (1256-86).

de Brus (Earls of Carrick from circa 1312/13)

There are two descents from Robert de Brus (d. 1304), Earl of Carrick.

The first descent is through his son King Robert I of Scotland (d. 7 June

1329) and secondly through his daughter, Isobel de Brus (half-sister of

Robert I), who married Sir Thomas Randolph of Strathdon.

Papedy (or Papedie)

The descent is from Nichola Papedy who married Sir Thomas Home

(of that Ilk) of Dunglass, East Lothian. They were great-great

grandparents of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home mentioned above

under Home.

Marshal (Earl of Pembroke, 2nd creation)

The descent is from Maud Marshal, the daughter of William Marshal,

1st Earl of Pembroke (of the second creation), mentioned above under

le Bigod. William Marshal is widely regarded as the greatest knight

to have ever lived.

Stewart (Lairds of Shambellie)

The descent is from Lilias Stewart (1753 - 21 January 1809), daughter

of Charles Stewart of Shambellie (1716- 22 May 1786). Lilias married

David Staig (1743- 21 October 1826), for many years the Provost of

Dumfries, Scotland.

Hepburn (Lords of Hailes, Earls of Bothwell from 1488 and Duke of

Orkney, 1567)

There are at least three descents from Hepburn. Firstly, from

Elizabeth Hepburn, daughter of Adam Hepburn, “Master of Hailes”

(d.1479). Elizabeth married Alexander Home, “Master of Home”,

they were the parents of Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home mentioned

above under Home. Secondly, from Margaret Hepburn, the sister of

Adam Hepburn, “Master of Hailes”. Margaret married Archibald Forrester (d.1512/13)

of Corstorphine. Thirdly, from another Elizabeth Hepburn, the aunt of Adam Hepburn,

“Master of Hailes” (d.1479). Elizabeth was the sister of Patrick Hepburn, 1st Lord Hailes

(d.1483). She married Alexander Montgomerie, “Master of Montgomerie” (d.1452) and

they were great-great grandparents of Christian Montgomerie mentioned below under

Montgomerie.

Carlyle (of Torthorwald, Lords of Carlyle from 1473/74)

The descent is from Mariot Carlyle (d. after 1 June 1486). She was the

daughter of John Carlyle, 1st Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald (d. Bet. 12

January 1500 - 23 July 1501). Mariot married Herbert Herries, 1st

Lord Herries of Terregles. They were the parents of Andrew Herries, 2nd Lord Herries

mentioned above under Home.

Herries (Lords Herries of Terregles from circa 1489)

There are at least two descents. One descent is from Catherine

Herries (d. 8 February 1592/93), daughter of William Herries, 3rd

Lord Herries of Terregles (d. 26 September 1543), the son of Andrew

Herries, 2nd Lord Herries, mentioned above under Home. There is

also descent from William Herries, 3rd Lord Herries of Terregles

other daughter (who inherited the barony of Terregles from her father), Agnes Herries,

Baroness Herries of Terregles. Agnes married John Maxwell, who became Lord Herries

of Terregles in right of her, he is mentioned below under Maxwell.

Comyn (Earls of Buchan)

There are two descents. Firstly, from Elizabeth Comyn (d.1267),

daughter of William Comyn, Earl of Buchan (d. 1233). Elizabeth

married William, Earl of Mar and their granddaughter Isabel

married Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329). The second descent is from

Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan (Elizabeth‟s brother) who married

Elizabeth de Quincy (d. 12 April 1282), mentioned below under de

Quincy. Their daughter Emma (her name is not certain, in some sources she is referred

to as Agnes), married Malise, 6th Earl of Strathearn.

de Montfort (Counts of Évreux)

The descent is from Bertrade de Montfort (d. 1227), daughter of Simon

de Montfort, Count of Évreux (d. March 1180-81). Bertrade married

Hugh of Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester (a great grandson of Henry I,

descended illegitimately).

Kirkpatrick (Lords of Closeburn)

The descent is from Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, daughter of Duncan

Kirkpatrick (d. Bef. 4 June 1425). Elizabeth Kirkpatrick married

William Carlyle of Torthorwald (some sources state she married John

Carlyle, 1st Lord Carlyle of Torthorwald, whom I have as her son).

Montgomerie (Lords Montgomerie from 1445 and Earls of Eglinton

from 1506/07)

The descent is from Christian Montgomerie (d. 9 August 1575),

daughter of John Montgomerie, “Master of Eglinton” (d. 30 April

1520). John Montgomerie was the son of Hugh Mongomerie, 1st Earl of

Eglinton. Christian married Sir James Douglas of Drumlanrig (1498-

1578), a grandson of the James Douglas mentioned below under Scott.

Murray (of Cockpool, Baronets from 1625 and Earl of Annandale

1636-1658)

The descent is from Agnes Murray (d. Aft. 1560), daughter of John

Murray, Knight of Cockpool, Ruthwell. Agnes married James

Kennedy of Blairquhan and their daughter Catherine was the wife

of William Herries, 3rd Lord Herries of Terregles (d. 26 September

1543), mentioned above under Herries.

de Quincy (Earls of Winchester)

The descent is from Elizabeth de Quincy (d. 12 April

1282), daughter of Roger De Quincy, 2nd Earl of

Winchester (d. 25 April 1265). Elizabeth married

Alexander Comyn, Earl of Buchan (d. 1289). The

arms depicted at left are those of Saer de Quincy, 1st

Earl of Winchester and father of Roger de Quincy. Saer de Quincy was one of the

witnesses to Magna Carta. The arms at right appear to have been used at a later date.

Erskine (of Kinnoull, Lords Erskine from 1439 and Earls of Mar from

1565)

The descent is from Elizabeth Erskine, daughter of John (also known

as William) Esrkine, Knight of Kinnoull, Perthshire (d. 1445).

Elizabeth married Robert Crichton, Knight, who is mentioned above

under Crichton.

Gifford

The descent is from Alice Gifford and Joanna Gifford, both

daughters of Hugh Gifford of Yester (d. Bef. 11 March 1408/09). Alice

married Thomas Boyd, Knight of Kilmarnock (and was a

grandfather of the Thomas Boyd mentioned above under Boyd).

Joanna married Thomas Hay, Knight of Locherworth (see below under Hay of Yester).

Hay (of Yester, later Lords of Yester and Earls and Marqesses of

Tweeddale, Earls of Gifford and Viscounts Walden)

The descent is from William Hay (d. 1421), Knight of Yester who

married Alicia Hay (daughter of Thomas Hay, Knight of Erroll).

William Hay was the son of Thomas Hay, Knight of Locherworth

and Joanna Gifford of Yester (mentioned above under Gifford). As

can be seen, the arms of Hay were quartered with those of Gifford.

Scott (of Rankilburn and Buccleuch, Lords Scott of Buccleuch from

1606, Earls of Buccleuch from 1619 and Dukes of Buccleuch from

1663)

The descent is from Janet Scott daughter of David Scott (d. March

1491/92) of Buccleuch. Janet married James Douglas, Knight of

Drumlanrig (a great great grandson of James Douglas, 2nd Earl of

Douglas). Janet and James were great grandparents of the Christian Douglas

mentioned above under Douglas.

Lamont (of Kilfinan)

The descent is from Mary Lamont daughter of John Lamont,

Knight of Kilfinan. Mary married Gillespick Campbell, Lord of

Lochow on 2 May 1343. They were 3 greats grandparents of Helen

Campbell and 4 greats grandparents of Isabel Campbell,

(mentioned above under Campbell).

Maxwell (Lords Maxwell of Claerlaverlock)

There are at least four descents. Firstly, from

Katherine Maxwell, daughter of Herbert Maxwell,

1st Lord Maxwell. Katherine married Gilbert

Kennedy, 1st Lord Kennedy circa 1440 and they were

4 greats grandparents of the Margaret Kennedy

mentioned above under Kennedy.

Secondly, there is a descent from Janet Maxwell, the

sister of Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell. Janet

married William Douglas (d. 1444), Knight of

Drumlanrig (and a grandson of James Douglas, 2nd

Earl of Douglas) and they were 3 greats grandparents of the Christian Douglas

mentioned above under Douglas.

Thirdly, there is a descent from Margaret Maxwell (another sister of Herbert Maxwell,

1st Lord Maxwell). Margaret married John Montgomerie (d. Bef. 22 November 1429).

This John Montgomerie was a 4 greats grandfather of the Christian Montgomerie

mentioned above under Montgomerie.

Finally, there is descent from Elizabeth Maxwell (d. Abt. 1620), she was the daughter of

John Maxwell, Lord Herries of Terregles, who was Lord Herries of Terregles in right of

his wife, Agnes Herries, Baroness Herries of Terregles. Agnes Herries was the daughter

and heir of William Herries, 3rd Lord Herries of Terregles (mentioned above under

Herries).

Hoppringle (of that Ilk)

The descent is from Mariota Hoppringle who married William

Borthwick (d. Bet. 6 October 1483 - 7 February 1483/84), 2nd Lord

Borthwick. Mariota was the daughter of Thomas Hoppringle (d.1462).

Mariota and William Borthwick were grandparents of the Agnes

Borthwick mentioned above under Borthwick.

Edmonstone (of Duntreath, Baronets from 1774)

The descent is from Elizabeth Edmonstone, daughter of Archibald

Edmonstone, Knight of Duntreath and his wife Janet Shaw of

Sauchie. Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany and grandson of

Robert II was one of Elizabeth‟s great-great grandfathers. One of

her great grandmothers was Mary Stewart, Princess of Scotland

and daughter of Robert III. Mary Stewart married several times (including to James

Kennedy of Dunure, through this marriage, Mary Stewart was a 5 greats

grandmother of Margaret Kennedy mentioned above under Kennedy). Another

marriage was to Archibald Edmonstone‟s paternal grandfather, William Edmonstone

(d. 1460). Elizabeth married John Montgomerie (d. 30 April 1520), mentioned above

under Montgomerie. They were the parents of Christian Montgomerie also mentioned

above under Montgomerie.

Shaw (of Sauchie and Greenock)

The descent is from Janet Shaw, mentioned above under

Edmonstone. Janet was the daughter of Sir James Shaw of Sauchie,

St. Ninians, Stirlingshire. Janet married Sir Archibald

Edmonstone of Duntreath.

Stewart (Dukes of Albany, 1st Creation)

The descent is from Matilda Stewart, granddaughter of Murdoch

Stewart (d. 24 May 1425), 2nd Duke of Albany. Matilda married Sir

William Edmonstone (d. 1486). Matilda and William were

grandparents of Elizabeth Edmonstone mentioned above under

Edmonstone.

Sutherland (Lords of Duffus from 1651)

The descent is from Isobel Sutherland, daughter of

Alexander Sutherland (d. Abt. 1484), 3rd of Duffus

& Torboll.

Isobel married Alexander Dunbar (d. 10 March

1497/98), knight of Westfield who was an

illegitimate son of James Dunbar, 4th Earl of

Moray (of the second creation) and Isobel Innes (as

mentioned above under Dunbar).

These arms combine the three mullets of the

Sutherland arms with a boar‟s head from the

Chisholm arms and the cross-crosslets fitchee of the

Cheyne arms. The relationships between these

families being that Isobel‟s mother was Morella (or

Muriel) Chisholm of Quarrelwood and Isobel‟s

father‟s paternal grandmother was Mary le

Cheyne.

Chisholm (of Quarrelwood)

The descent is from Morella (or Muriel) Chisholm, daughter of Robert

Chisholm, Knight of Quarrelwood. Morella married Alexander

Sutherland (d. Abt. 1484), 3rd of Duffus & Torboll. They were the

parents of Isobel Sutherland mentioned above under Sutherland.

In A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great

Britain and Ireland (enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank; but uninvested with heritable honours),Volume IV, by John Burke Esq., London, 1838, it is

stated on page 261 that the arms of Chisholm of Quarrelwood are: Azure, three boars

heads erased Or. These arms are of course very similar to that of Gordon, however, the

boars‟ heads in the Gordon arms are couped, whereas in the Chisholm arms they are

erased.

Cheyne (of Inverugie, Duffus & Straloch)

The descent is from Mary (le) Cheyne, daughter of Reginald (le)

Cheyne (d. Aft. 1320), Knight of Inverugie, Duffus and Straloch. Mary

married Nicholas Sutherland, 1st of Duffus. They were the paternal

grandparents of Alexander Sutherland (d. Abt. 1484), 3rd of Duffus

and Torboll, mentioned above under Sutherland and Chisholm.

Halyburton (of Dirleton)

The descent is from Jean Halyburton, daughter of Walter Halyburton

(d. 24 July 1388), Knight of Dirleton. Jean Halyburton married

Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney.

Stewart (Lords of Lorn)

The descent is from Elizabeth Stewart (d. 26 October 1510), daughter

of John Stewart (d. 20 December 1463), 2nd Lord of Lorn. Elizabeth

married Colin Campbell (d. 10 May 1493), 1st Earl of Argyll. They

were the parents of Helen Campbell and paternal grandparents of

Isabel Campbell (mentioned above under Campbell).

Innes (of that Ilk)

The descent is from Isobel Innes (mentioned above under Dunbar), she

was the daughter of Walter Innes (d. bef. 1456), 10th of that Ilk and

Euphemia Fraser (mentioned above under Fraser). Isobel had an

illegitimate son, Alexander Dunbar, Knight of Westfield, mentioned

above under Dunbar.

Vaux or Vans (of Barnbarroch)

There are at least two descents. Firstly, there is a descent from

Mariotta Vaux. Mariotta was the daughter of Robert Vaux of

Barnbarroch and Euphemia Graham (daughter of Malise Graham

[1406-1490], 1st Earl of Menteith). Mariotta married Quentin Agnew

in 1469. Their 3 greats grandson was Patrick Agnew, 1st Baronet of

Lochnaw who married Margaret Kennedy (mentioned above under Kennedy).

Secondly, there is a descent from Margaret Vans (Vaux), daughter of Patrick Vans

(d.1528). Patrick Vans was a grandson of Robert Vaux mentioned above. Margaret

The descent is from Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 1st

the only difference being that the double tressure flory counter

Livingstone of Callendar (Earls of Callendar from

1641)

The descent is from Janet Livingstone, daughter of Sir

Alexander Livingstone of Callendar, Stirlingshire

(d.1451). He was Justiciar of Scotland and keeper of

Stirling Castle.

He conspired with William Crichton, the Lord

Chancellor, in the assassination of the 6th Earl of

Douglas and his brother (known as the "Black

Dinner") at Edinburgh Castle. Later he allied with the

Douglases against Crichton.

The descent is from Margaret, Countess of Blois (d.1230),

daughter of Theobald V, Count of Blois (1130-90/91) and Alix of

Eleanore of Aquitaine (1122-1204). Margaret married Otto I,

Count of Burgundy (d.1199/1200).

Barons of Donzy

The descent is from Agnès II of Donzy (d.1224), daughter of

Hervé IV de Donzy, Count of Nevers (1173-1221/22) and Mathilde

de Courtenay, daughter of Peter II de Courtenay, Emperor of

Constantinople (d.1219). Agnès married Guy III de Châtillon,

Count of Saint-Pol (1196-1226).

Dukes of Glogów

The descent is from Henry III, Duke of Glogów (d.1309), son of

Konrad I, Duke of Glogów and Salome of Greater Poland. Henry III

married Matilda of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1276-1318). Catherine

Elisabeth of Brunswick-Lüneburg (mentioned above under the

Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg), was a great-grandniece of

Matilda of Brunswick-Lüneburg.

Grand Duke of Lithuania

The descent is from Elisabeth (Elzbieta) of Lithuania (d.1364),

daughter of Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania (d.1341).

Elisabeth married Wenceslaus, Duke of Plock (d.1336) whose

maternal grandfather was Ottokar II, King of Bohemia (d.1278).

Earls of Kent

The descent is from Margaret Holland (1385-1439), daughter of

Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent (d.1397) and Alice Fitzalan

(d.1415/16). Margaret married John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset

(1373-1410), a paternal grandson of Edward III, King of England.

Margaret Holland‟s daughter Joan Beaufort (1404-45) became

Queen of Scotland on her marriage to James I, King of Scotland.

The descent is from Maria van Arkel, daughter of John V van

Arkel, Lord of Arkel (1362-1428) and Joanna of Jülich (d.1394).

Maria married John II, Lord of Egmond (d.1450/51).

Dukes of Lorraine

The descent is from Isabelle of Lorraine (d.1353), daughter of

Theobald II, Duke of Lorraine (1263-1312). Isabelle married Érard

de Bar, Seigneur de Pierrepont (d.1337).

Dukes of Limburg

The descent is from Henry IV, Duke of Limburg (1195-1246/47)

and his sister, Mathilde of Limburg, both children of Waleran

III, Duke of Limburg (d.1226) and Cunigunda of Lorraine. Henry

IV married Irmgard of Berg (d.1248/49) and Mathilde married

William III, Count of Jülich (d.1219 in the 5th Crusade).

The descent is from John II, Lord of Egmond (d.1450/51), son of

Arnold I, Lord of Egmond (d.1409) and Jolanthe of Leiningen

(d.1434). John II married Maria van Arkel (mentioned above

Dukes of Guelders

The descent is from Mary of Guelders (d.1463), daughter of

Arnold of Egmond, Duke of Guelders (1410-72/73), who was the

son of John II, Lord of Egmond (mentioned above under the

Lords of Egmond). Mary‟s mother was Catherine of Cleves (1417-

78/79) Mary married James II, King of Scotland (1430-60).

Counts of Leiningen-Dagsburg

The descent is from Jolanthe of Leiningen, daughter of

Frederick VIII of Leiningen-Dagsburg (1320-87) and Jolanda of

Jülich. Jolanthe married Arnold I, Lord of Egmond (d.1409) and

they were the parets of John II, Lord of Egmond (mentioned

above under the Lords of Egmond.

Counts of Jülich

The descent is from Jolanda of Jülich (mentioned above under

the Counts of Leiningen-Dagsburg). She was the daughter of

Gottfried, Count of Jülich & Lord of Bergheim (d.1335) and

Elisabeth of Cleves. Jolanda married Frederick VIII of

Leiningen-Dagsburg (1320-87).

House of Dillingen

The descent is from Hartmann III of Dillingen (d.1180) and his

wife Richinza of Lenzburg. They were great grandparents of

Rudolf I, King of Germany and Count of Habsburg (1218-91).

Dukes of Zähringen

The descent is from Anna of Zähringen, daughter of Berthold

IV, Duke of Zähringen (d.1186). Anna married Ulric, Count of

Kyburg (d.1227). They were the maternal grandparents of

Rudolf I, King of Germany & Count of Habsburg (1218-91).

MacDonald (Lords of the Isles)

There is a descent from Mary MacDonald, daughter of Angus

"Og" MacDonald, Lord of the Isles (d.1330). Mary married

William de Ross, 5th Earl of Ross (d.1371/72).

There is another descent from Mariota of the Isles, daughter of

Donald, Lord of the Isles (d.1423) and Margaret (or Mary)

Leslie, Countess of Ross (a granddaughter of Mary MacDonald).

The arms of the Lords of the Isles are very similar to the Dukes of Zähringen, but the

two families are of course distinct, the Dukes of Zähringen being German and the Lords

Maudit (Lord Hanslape)

The descent is from Isabel Mauduit (or Maudit), daughter of

William de Maudit, Lord Hanslape (d.c.1256) and Alice de

Beaumont, daughter of Waleran de Beaumont, 4th Earl of

Warwick. Isabel married William de Beauchamp, Lord Elmley

and they were the parents of William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl

of Warwick.

de Verdun (or Verdon)

The descent is from Maud de Verdon (d.1283), daughter of Theobald le

Botiller (d.1230) and Rohese de Verdon. Maude married John Fitzalan,

6th Earl of Arundel (1223-67).

The Counts of Hoya

The descent is from Richeza of Hoya-Stumpenhausen, daughter of

Henry II, Count of Hoya (d.1290). Richeza married John I, Count of

Oldenburg and they were 3 greats grandparents of Dietrich, Count of

The descent is from Isabeau de Brienne, daughter of Érard de

Brienne, Seigneur de Ramerupt (d.1246) and Philippa of Champagne

Champagne (1166-97) and Isabella I of Jerusalem (1172-1205). Isabeau

The descent is from Guy III de Châtillon, Count of

Saint-Pol (1196-1226), son of Gaucher III de Châtillon,

Campdavain, Countess of Saint-Pol (in her own right,

having inherited the title from her father, Hughes IV,

The descent is from Ade de Roucy, daughter of Hugues, Count of

The descent is from Anna Gradenigo (d.1321), daughter of Pietro

The coat of arms depicted at left was given in Burke‟s

Irish Family Records, 1976, page 267 for the descendants

of Daniel Connor of Bandon who married Margaret Slone

in 1698. Daniel‟s parents were Cornelius Connor and Joan

Splane who married in 1670.

Somerville of Carnwath (Lords Somerville from 1445)

The descent is from Elizabeth Somerville, daughter of John

Somerville, 3rd Lord Somerville. Elizabeth married Archibald

(Celestin) Campbell of Lochow and they were the parents of

Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll (d.1493).

Clephane of Carslogie, Fifeshire

The descent is from Helen Clephane (d.1608), daughter of

George Clephane (d.1557) and Christian Learmonth. Helen

married Alexander Campbell of Carco (d.1608), Bishop of

Brechin and they were the parents of the Jean Campbell who

married Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick (mentioned above

under Hamilton).

Learmonth

The descent is from Christian Learmonth, daughter of Thomas

Learmonth. Christian married George Clephane (d.1557) of

Carslogie, Fifeshire and they were the parents of Helen

Clephane who is mentioned above under Clephane.

Meldrum of Seggie

The descent is from Grissel Meldrum (d.1597), daughter of

Alexander Meldrum of Seggie and Euphame Boswell. Grissel

married James Learmonth (d.1547 in the Battle of Pinkie) and

they were the parents of Thomas Learmonth who is

mentioned above under Learmonth.

Cunningham of Caprington

The descent is from Elizabeth Cunningham, daughter of

Adam Cunningham, 2nd of Caprington. Elizabeth married

James Makgill and they were great grandparents of the

The descent is from Janet Graham, daughter of Patrick

The descent is from Margaret Stewart, daughter of Alexander

Stewart, Bishop of Moray (d.1537). Alexander Stewart was the

James II, King of Scotland.

Margaret Stewart married Patrick Graham of Inchbrakie

(mentioned above under Graham).

Counts of Schwalenberg

The descent is from Adolf I, Count of Waldeck and

Schwalenberg (d.1270), son of Heinrich I, Count of Waldeck

and Schwalenberg (d.1214) and Heseke von Dassel (d.1220).

Adolf I was a great grandfather of Elisabeth von Waldeck

(d.1371), who is mentioned above under the Counts of

Adolf I is an ancestor of Christian I, King of Denmark and

de Essex (Lord Rayleigh & Haughley)

The descent is from Agnes de Essex, daughter of Henry of Essex

(d.c.1170) and Alice de Montfort. Agnes was the 3rd wife of

Aubrey de Vere, 1st Earl of Oxford (d.1194).

According to Wikipedia, many have mistakenly called Agnes

“Lucia”. This mistake is based on a misreading of a single

document associated with a religious house at Hedingham,

Essex, established around 1190. A woman named Lucia was prioress at Castle

Hedingham Priory and has been confused with Agnes.

Denniston of Denniston (or Danielston)

The descent is from Elizabeth Denniston, daughter of Sir Robert

Denniston. Elizabeth married Sir Robert Maxwell of Calderwood

and they were the parents of Mariot (Mariota) Maxwell who

married Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd (d.1481-82) . Mariot and Robert

Boyd were the grandparents of Margaret Boyd of Bonshaw,

mistress of James IV of Scotland.

Maxwell of Calderwood

The descent is from Mariot (Mariota) Maxwell who is mentioned

above under Denniston. Mariot‟s father, Sir Robert Maxwell of

Calderwood quartered his arms with those of Denniston.

The original Denniston arms were recorded by Nisbet as being a

bend sable, however they were quartered here as a bend azure.

The Scottish Royal Family

There are multiple descents. In total there

are descents from 16 Kings of Scotland.

The most recent descent is from James IV

(1473-1513) through his illegitimate

daughter, Katherine Stewart by Marion

(Margaret) Boyd of Bonshaw. Katherine

married James Douglas, 3rd Earl of

Morton. Please see the tree at the end of

this document for this descent.

Two descents are from Princess Mary,

daughter of Robert III (1337-1406). She

married (amongst others), Sir James

Kennedy (The Younger) of Dunure. Their 5 greats granddaughter, Margaret Kennedy

married Sir Patrick Agnew, 1st Baronet of Lochnaw (d.1661).

Princess Mary also married William Edmonstone (d. 1460). Their great granddaughter

was Elizabeth Edmonstone who married John Montgomerie (d. 30 April 1520), son of

Hugh Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglinton. (Please see the tree below for these descents

from Princess Mary).

There is also descent from King William, “The Lion” (d.1214). His daughter, Ada

FitzWilliam (d.1200) married Patrick, Earl of Dunbar (1152-1232), the 9 greats

grandfather of Margaret Dunbar mentioned above under Dunbar.

There is also descent from Donald III (1033-1099) through his granddaughter, Hextilda,

who married Richard Comyn of Northallerton, Yorkshire (d. Bet. 1176 – 1182). Hextilda

and Richard Comyn were the grandparents of Elizabeth Comyn and Alexander

Comyn, Earl of Buchan (mentioned above under Comyn).

The English Royal Family

There are multiple descents from the English Royal Family. There

are descents from seven pre-conquest kings and nine post-conquest

kings, the last of whom was Edward III (1312-77). The descent from

Edward III is through his son, John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster

and John‟s son, John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset (1373-1410). A

through Joan Beaufort‟s marriage to James Stewart “the Black Knight of Lorn”, but

there is also a descent from her marriage to James I, King of Scotland through to James

IV, King of Scotland.

There is also a descent from Robert of Caen, Earl of Gloucester (d.1147), an illegitimate

son of Henry I.

There are also multiple descents from the Dukes of Normandy, not only from William

the Conqueror, (d.1087) but also his sister, Adelaide of Normandy, Countess of Aumale

(who married Lambert II, Count of Lens).

There is descent from Richard I, Duke of Normandy (933-996), not only through the

senior line, but also illegitimately through Godfrey, Count of Eu, the grandfather of

Richard FitzGilbert, Lord of Clare. There is also descent from Richard I„s son Robert II

(Archbishop of Rouen) who was the grandfather of Agnes d‟Évreux who married

Simon de Montfort* of Montfort-l'Amaury, who in turn were great grandparents of

Bertrade de Montfort mentioned above under de Montfort.

Mathilda of Flanders (William the Conqueror‟s wife) was a 5 greats granddaughter of

Alfred the Great (849-899). She was also an 8 greats granddaughter of Charlemagne

(742-813/14).

* Not to be confused with Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, his much more famous

descendant.

The French Royal Family

Commencing with Louis IV (920-954), there is descent from 13 kings of

France, the last of whom was John II (1319-64). Our descent is from

John II‟s son, Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (d.1404).

The other kings from whom there is descent are: Louis VI, Louis VII,

Louis VIII, Louis IX, Philip I, Philip II, Philip III, Philip IV, Philip V,

Philip VI and Henry I.

The Hungarian Royal Family

There is descent from 10 kings of Hungary, the last of whom was

Stephen V, King of Hungary and Croatia (d.1272). Stephen‟s

daughter, Maria of Hungary (d.1323) married Charles II, King of

Naples and Albania (1254-1309).

The Royal Family of Castile and León

There is descent from eight kings of Castile and León and one queen

(i.e. either Castile, León or Castile and León). The last of these kings

was Ferdinand III, King of Castile (d.1252). Ferdinand‟s daughter,

Eleanore of Castile (1241-90) married Edward I, King of England.

The Royal Family of Aragon

There is descent from seven kings of Aragon and one queen, the last

king from whom there was descent was Peter III (1239-1285). Peter

III‟s son was Frederick III, King of Sicily (1272-1337).

The Royal Family of Navarre

There is descent from five kings of Navarre and four kings of

Pamplona (Navarre‟s predecessor). The last king of Navarre from

whom there is descent was Henry I (d.1274). Henry‟s daughter, Joan

of Navarre (1272/73-1305) married King Philip IV of France.

The Kings of Naples and Sicily

There is descent from Charles I, King of Naples and

Sicily (1226/27-1284/85) and Charles II, King of Naples

and Albania (1254-1309). Charles I had made a claim to

Jerusalem (hence the arms depicted on the sinister side

of his armorial bearings). Charles II‟s daughter,

Margaret, Countess of Anjou was the mother of King Philip VI of France

(from whom we descend), we also descend from her daughter Joan of Valois (1294-1342)

who married William I, Count of Hainaut (d.1337). Philippa of Hainaut (mentioned

above under the Counts of Hainaut and Holland) was their daughter.

There is also descent from the Hohenstaufen Kings of Sicily (arms depicted at right),

through Elisabeth of Sicily (1310-49), daughter of Frederick III, King of Sicily (1272-1337).

Frederick III inherited the throne of Sicily through his mother, Constance of Sicily

(1249-1302), the daughter of Manfred, King of Sicily (1232-1265/66) who was killed in the

Battle of Benevento where he was defeated by Charles I (mentioned above).

The Polish Royal Family

The descent is from Mieszko II Lambert, King of Poland (d.1034).

There is descent from his daughter Richeza (or Adelaide) of Poland

(1013-75) who married Béla I, King of Hungary. There is also

descent from his son, Casimir I “the restorer”, Duke of Poland (1016-

58) who married Maria Dobroniega of Kiev (d.1087), the daughter

of Vladimir Sviatoslavich “The Great”. The arms depicted date

from 1295.

The Swedish Royal Family

There is descent from 10 kings of Sweden, the last of

whom was Valdemar I (1239-1302). He married Sophia of

Denmark, daughter of Eric IV, King of Denmark

(d.1250) and Jutta of Saxony. Valdermar I‟s daughter,

Ingeborg of Sweden (1263-92) married Gerhard II, Count

of Holstein-Plön (1254-1312).

The arms depicted at right are the arms used by the House of Bjelbo to which

Valdemar I belonged.

The Norwegian Royal Family

There is descent from seven kings of Norway the last of whom was

HaakonV (1270-1319). Haakon V‟s daughter, Ingeborg of Norway

(1301-61) married Eric Magnusson, Duke of Södermanland (1282-

1318) and their daughter was Euphemia of Sweden (1317-70) who is

referred to above under the Lords and Dukes of Mecklenburg as

the wife of Albert II, Duke of Mecklenburg (d.1378/79).

The Danish Royal Family

There is descent from 14 kings of Denmark the last of whom was

Christian I (1426-81). Christian I was the son of Dietrich

(Theodoric), Count of Oldenburg (d.1439/40) and Helvig of

Schauenburg (d.1436). He married Dorothea of Brandenburg

(d.1495) who is mentioned above under the Margarves of

Brandenburg.

The Bohemian Royal Family (Premyslid

Dynasty)

There is descent from seven kings of Bohemia the

last of whom was John “the Blind”, King of

Bohemia (1296-1346) who was famously killed by

the English at the Battle of Crécy. John married

Elisabeth of Bohemia (d.1330), daughter of Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia & Poland

(1271-1305).

The Royal Family of Savoy

The descent is from Beatrice of Savoy, daughter of Amadeus IV,

Count of Savoy (1197-1253) and Marguerite of Burgundy (1192-1243).

Beatrice married Manfred III, 3rd Margarve of Saluzzo (d.1244).

Thomas I, Count of Savoy (mentioned above under the Counts of

Geneva) was the grandfather of Beatrice of Savoy.

The House of Savoy ultimately occupied the thrones of Cyprus, Sicily, Sardinia and

Italy.

House of Hohenstaufen (Dukes of Swabia, Holy Roman

Emporers, Kings of the Germans)

There are multiple descents from this house. One descent is from

Marie of Swabia (1201-35), daughter of Philip of Swabia, King of

the Germans (1177-1208) and his wife Irene Angelina (d.1208),

daughter of the Byzantine Emperor, Isaac II Angelos (1156-1204).

Marie married Henry II, Duke of Brabant (1207-48).

House of Habsburg (Holy Roman Emperors)

There are multiple descents from this house. One descent is from

Rudolf I, King of Germany & Count of Habsburg (1218-91). He

married Gertrude of Zollern-Hohenberg-Haigerloch (d.1280/81).

There is descent from three of their daughters: Matilda (d.1304),

Agnes (d.1322) and Jutta (d.1297), as well as their son, Albert I,

King of Germany (1255-1308).

The Royal Family of Portugal

The descent is from Berengaria of Portugal (d.1221), daughter of

Sancho I, King of Portugal (1154-1211) and Dulcia, daughter of

Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona (d.1162) and Petronilla

Queen of Aragon (d.1173). Berengaria married Valdemar II, King

of Denmark (1170-1241) and they were the parents of three kings of

Denmark (Eric IV, Abel and Christopher I).

The Kings of Jerusalem

The descent is from Isabella I of Jerusalem (1172-1205), daughter

of Amalric, King of Jerusalem (1136-74) and Maria Komnene,

Queen of Jerusalem. Isabella I married Henry II, Count of

Champagne (1166-97).

The above cadets (numbers 92 – 101) are all descended from Sir John Stewart of Garlies

and his wife Marion Stewart (daughter of Sir Walter Stewart of Dalswinton, a great

grandson of Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl who died 22 July 1298).

Stewart of Garlies and its cadets are distinguished (heraldically) from other branches of

the Stewart family through the use of a bend engrailed gules (a red stripe with serrated

edges running from the top left to bottom right of the shield). The use of the double

tressure flory counter-flory is often used to indicate descent from the Scottish Royal

Family.
