Who is the course for?The course is designed for students

who:

Want to move onto a related career or higher education course

Want to develop their own innovative, creative design capabilities to produce high quality products

Want the opportunity to carry out and explore a wide range of practical activities

Option 1Resistant Materials

You will study products such as lighting and furniture to help you understand product design, development and manufacture

You will design, develop and make high quality products and present them with a design portfolio as your coursework project

You will design and make using mainly wood, plastics and metals

You must make full-size working products

You will learn a range of design and manufacturing techniques including the use of CAD and CAM

You will study a range of resistant materials and how they are used in innovative products

Option 2Graphic Products

You will study products such as packaging, displays and architecture to help you understand product design

You will design and make high quality products and present them with a design portfolio as your coursework project

You will produce creative and adventurous designs - there is no need for the products to work.

You will learn design and manufacturing techniques including the use of CAD and CAM, and make use of a wide range of appropriate materials

There are two pathways – Conceptual Design (such as packaging, display and vehicle design) and The Built Environment (such as architecture and film sets)

How is the course structured?

We will be following a brand new course next year, with the Edexcel Exam board. The AS course is split into 2 units:

Unit 1Creative skills

You produce a portfolio with three sections (product investigation, design and manufacture). This will mean tackling three different products.

This is assessed by your teachers and is worth 60% of the total AS grade

Unit 2Design & Technology in Practice

An exam based on studying materials, processes and how they are used in design and industry

This is assessed by an exam in June and is worth 40% of the total AS grade

There are 2 further units in Year 13 to complete the full A2 level

We also have regular visits to Newcastle, Disneyland and London
