Joan Franklin Smutny, Founder and Director of the Center for Gifted / Midwest Torrance Center for Creativity, is the author of 21 books and many articles on gifted education, and the recipient of awards for her contribution to the field of gifted, including the National Association for Gifted Students’ Distinguished Service Award and their E. Paul Torrance Award in Creativity.

Overview of Project 2015

Art on the Edge: Explore artists who’ve pushed the boundaries of art to the next level. Learn about the innovators and risk-takers of the art world, artists who saw the boundaries and went to the edge to create something new. Try new techniques and test ideas as you create your own works of art! Instructor: Christie White

Chemical Cacophony! Exploit the chemical properties of solutions, solvents, pH, reactants, atoms, and molecules to explore and investigate chemical reactions of all sorts. Inventive, scientific analysis is encouraged. Instructor: Jose Sandoval

Creative Writing: Advance your creative analysis through writing free verse, stories, biographical fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction. Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” The writer is an imaginative thinker and communicator. Be published in the Project creative writing magazine! Instructors: Joan Franklin Smutny and Gail Arnold

Fashion Design: Head-to-Toe Fashion: When creating a collection, the best de-signers understand how accessories complete a look. Learn how to design a run-way-ready three-piece accessory line, including hats and handbags, to be modeled in our Open House Runway Presentation! Instructor: Jamie Kendall

Advanced Fashion Design - Adventures in Cosplay: Many modern fashion de-signers look to science fiction, the comic book universe, and literature when creat-ing their latest collections. Using both traditional and unconventional materials, students will become designers themselves and create their own looks inspired by cosplay. Looks will be modeled in our Open House Runway Presentation! Prerequisite: Fashion Design course through the CFG. ($20 materials fee) Instructor: Jamie Kendall Filmmaking I: Explore the history and the future of filmmaking and digital media. Discover the creation of illusion of motion in the cinematic arts. Using various types of media (collage, photography, painting), create photographic stills which you will then manipulate into motion. Instructor: Johnny White

Filmmaking II: Use digital technology, create scenes and document them, editing the images into stream-of-consciousness films. Prerequisite: Filmmaking I or The Motion Picture. Instructor: Johnny White

Genetics: Why do you resemble your parents and relatives? Investigate DNA and learn how it determines your physical make-up. Use the theories of Gregor Mendel to apply the principles of heredity with plants and animals to determine how and why certain inherited traits make you the way you are. Instructor: Sara Tsioles

Improv and Sketch Comedy Collaboration: Examine improvisation both as an art form in itself and as a means to create comedic material for performance. Engage in a series of improvisational games and activities that will help hone your skills as a performing artist. The course will culminate in a performance that will combine sketches created and developed by the students with improvised pieces that will be created on the spot. Instructor: Matt Rieger

It’s Magic! Observe tricks and challenge yourself to unlock secrets that illustrate essential principles of magic and mentalism. Reproduce what was performed in your unique way. Explore challenges that have puzzled magicians and mentalists throughout history. Investigate famous magicians and create tricks of your own. Embrace the opportunity to design an impromptu act that can be done anywhere anytime with everyday objects. At the end of three weeks, perform a small stage show for friends and family.Instructor: Scott Kanter

Mysterious Math: Unravel mysteries of math, solve ancient puzzles, construct 3-D wonders, transform shapes, and delve into dynamic explorations for the first two weeks. Immerse yourself in one of these fascinating math topics during the third week, as you select a topic of keen interest to pursue in depth. (Grades 6-8) Instructor: Carol Fisher

Extreme Math: Why are many mathematicians also musicians? What does Ben Franklin have to do with magic squares? Why are those math t-shirts funny? If you love math, spend two weeks looking at these burning questions and more. In the third week, choose your own investigation, and design your own math t-shirt. (Grades 9-12) Instructor: Carol Fisher

Speak Your Mind! – The Art of Public and Persuasive Speaking: Learn how to address an audience effectively! Taught by an attorney, this class will cover giving prepared and impromptu speeches, incorporating props and Powerpoint slides, using humor and quotations, the power of body language, and introduce principles of debate. Participate in a tongue twister contest, speech charades, and many other fun activities! Instructor: Janette Forman

Morning Courses: Morning-Only and Full-Day students enjoy two classes every morning, chosen from the courses below. Unless otherwise noted, courses are offered to all grade levels. Students are placed with their age peers, usually with only two or three grade levels per classroom.

Project 2015 is designed for bright, motivated learners who welcome dynamic opportunities to explore diverse subjects in a challenging, creative environment. This innovative summer program meets on weekdays for three weeks.

Students may choose from three formats: Morning-Only, Full-Day, or Afternoon-Only. The development of problem-solving skills, creativity, and critical thinking is inherent in the framework for all courses. Projects and activities evoke active, hands-on participation.

Eligibility

Bright, motivated students entering 6th-12th grades in fall 2015, from any educational setting—whether public, private, parochial, or home school—may apply.

New students, who never have attended a CFG program, should be recommended by a teacher in a signed letter addressing the student’s academic, intellectual, and creative talent and performance, as well as the student’s potential for success at Project 2015. In cases where a teacher recommendation is not available, applicants may submit a copy of their most recent grade report for consideration.

Applicants need not be enrolled in advanced programming at their schools; test scores are not the sole criterion for our programs. Although our students generally rank at or above the 95th percentile in many areas, we recognize and discern the great variety of talents and abilities that young people express. If uncertain about their child’s eligibility, parents are encouraged to request a conference with the CFG Director.

Returning students (those who have successfully attended any previousCFG program) do not require a teacher recommendation. They are eligible upon our timely receipt of their applications.

STEM - Kinetic Energy and Electronics Lab: Investigate the roles energy, force, and motion play in our modern world. Learn basic circuitry and apply principles of physics, electronics, and engineering as you design and construct kinetic contraptions that hover, float, fly, hop, and toss! Note: Soldering will be required. ($50 lab fee) Instructor: Mike Gorelick

Theater: Is the stage calling your name? Collaborate in the performance, direction, and design of a dramatic production. Along the way, participate as a group in a series of activities, games, and improvisation exercises to enhance each individual’s skills as a theater artist. Present your finished production before a live audience on the final evening. Past performances have included Arsenic and Old Lace, 12 Angry Men, Stage Door, Harvey, and Our Town. Instructor: Matt Rieger

Web Design: Create dynamic websites using Dreamweaver. Write HTML code, create Cascading Style Sheets, integrate Flash animations, and deploy your creation to the web. Instructor: Artyzen Pak

World War II - Pearl Harbor and 1942: Represent a nation or a major decision maker of World War II! Sitting around a large map of the world as it was in September of 1939, on which are miniatures representing the naval, land, and air forces of the belligerent nations, re-enact the major decisions of the war, moving pieces on the map accordingly. Instructors: Christopher Freeman and Dale Ridder

They must include the required deposit of $150. There are no application deadlines.

Financial Assistance

Need-based financial assistance is available. To apply, our financial assistance application (available online at www.centerforgifted.org)and accompanying documents must be submitted.

Payments

A deposit of $150 is required with application and will be credited to tuition. The balance of tuition and lab fees (if any) is due in full by June 15, two weeks before the program begins. Payments are accepted by check or money order payable to The Center for Gifted, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, debit card, e-check, and cash.

Transportation

Free shuttle service is available from various locations throughout the Chicagoland area, including Buffalo Grove, Chicago, Naperville, Skokie, Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Wilmette, and additional sites as interest warrants. Coding, Electronics, and Microcontrollers: Learn the basics of electronics and coding by developing interactive objects! Take inputs from a variety of switches or sensors and control lights, motors, and other physical outputs using a microcontroller board and writing software for this board. ($15 lab fee) Instructor: Artyzen Pak

Economics, the Stock Market, and You! Do you like money and want to make it grow? Play the "stock market" game, where you pit your wits against the real stock market. Form a board of directors and run your own company. Explore why companies incorporate, the history of the stock market, and about stocks, bonds, and dividends. Learn the principles of micro- and macro-economics! Instructor: Janette Forman

Engineering Escapades: What constitutes a sound design? How much weight will your bridge hold? Can your building withstand an earthquake or a battering ram? Reimagine and reinvent past technologies while tackling STEM challenges via hands-on design and building projects. ($30 lab fee) Instructor: Mike Gorelick

Forensic Science: You have all seen the popular TV show CSI, but have you ever wondered what really happens to the evidence collected from a real crime scene? Where does it go, how does it tell its story and, most importantly, how can it be used to solve the crime? Here you become the scientist who actually analyzes the evidence and uses it to solve the crime. Instructor: Sara Tsioles

Artists’ Studio: Find your personal artistic style. Explore a variety of media while experimenting with a range of artistic styles and techniques. Create complex and creative works of art using inspiration from art history and life. Create a collection of work while developing your individual artistic skills and finding your own personal style and artistic preference. Instructor: Christie White

Filmmaking - Adaptations from Stage to Screen: Hitchcock did it in The Rope and Dial M for Murder. Kenneth Branagh, Laurence Olivier, and Orson Welles did it to Shakespeare. William Wyler did it to Lillian Hellman’s The Children’s Hour and The Little Foxes. Steel Magnolias, Casablanca, Diary of Anne Frank, A Raisin in the Sun, and The Heiress have all had their adaptations, and now it’s your turn. A multitude of plays will be studied . . . some by scenes, some in entirety. Watch various screen adaptations of plays and scenes, both those that worked and those that failed, to give insight into the two mediums. Work together as a class to adapt scenes and film them. Instructor: Johnny White

Historic Games of Strategy and Diplomacy: Re-enact history through games of strategy. Expand empires through 4,000 years of History of the World; smite thine enemies in Ancient Conquest; invade Britannia; crown your pretender in Kingmaker; colonize exotic lands during the Age of Imperialism; lay iron track across the prairiein Empire Builder; make the world safe for democracy in Diplomacy; fight World War II in Axis and Allies. Instructors: Christopher Freeman and Dale Ridder

Students who prefer a single 2½ hour workshop may choose from the following:

Humor Writing: Explore the world of illogic through writing. Investigate the essential principles of how to make people laugh through satire, parody, nonsense, clash of context, fish out of water, and more. Design your own puns, jokes, vines, skits, songs, stand-up routines, fake newspaper and news program. Develop your own comic voice through different games and challenges. Instructor: Scott Kanter

Dynamic, exciting courses offer new expansive challenge and hands-on activity.
