"Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?" Jesus had worked a miracle

of healing for ten people af-

flicted with leprosy. They had

cried out for him to have pity

on them, and he did. But only

one member of this group

took the time to return to Je-

sus, fall at his feet, and thank

him. Why?

Perhaps some were so busy

rejoicing that they forgot to

give thanks. Perhaps others

thought they deserved to be

healed and thus did not think

in terms of gratitude for the miracle. Maybe some in

the group weren't sure that the healing was going to

last. Or, possibly, some of them were just selfish and

lazy. Whatever the case, Jesus affirms the one man

who does the right thing: "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you." Jesus thus establishes this Sa-

maritan man as our example. We too are to glorify

"God in a loud voice" for all that he has done for us.

So, what exactly has God done for us? What are the

miracles in our lives that we have failed to notice, to

believe, or to appreciate? Undoubtedly the answers

will be different for everyone, with one main exception:

we are all called to give thanks for the gift of life, of

course. This is the first miracle God worked on our be-

half! Bringing us into existence to live and love is a gift

we might tend to take for granted. But surely, we can

be thankful for more.

We would all do well to reflect on the multitude of

God's gifts in our lives. Sometimes we have to pause

long enough to think and recognize

those things we should be grateful for.

But a little effort in this regard is well

worth it to avoid being like the ungrateful

lepers. Instead, may we be the ones who give thanks where thanks is due.

una perfecta lección de cómo dar

gracias a Dios en todo momento.

Pero observemos que fueron los

extranjeros los que agradecieron a

Dios los beneficios de la salud reci-

bidos. El pagano Naamán y el lep-

roso samaritano. ¿Qué nos enseña

este pasaje? ¿Somos agrade-

cidos? O somos de los que

creemos merecerlo todo. Fijémonos que los israelitas

no sabían agradecer a Jesús a pesar de todo lo que

hacía por ellos. Los curaba, les daba de comer, resu-

citaba muertos y ellos tomaban todo por ventaja.

Ojalá que estemos en el grupo de los que saben dar

gracias. Que Dios nos ayude a tomar conciencia para

no pertenecer al grupo de los otros. "¿Dónde están los otros nueve?" Sabemos que hay quien nunca da

las gracias para nada, ni a la familia ni a otras per-

sonas, mucho menos a Dios. Saber dar gracias es un

arte de humildad y educación. Supone relación con

Dios que nos lo da todo y con los demás que nos

llenan de detalles en la vida cotidiana. Pidamos al Se-

ñor que aprendamos no solo a pedir sino también a

saber agradecer. ¡Hoy es un buen día para hacerlo!

"Jesús, maestro, ten compasión de nosotros". Nos

narra el Evangelio que gritaban los leprosos, aguar-

dando a la distancia. Acerquémonos al Señor en esta

Eucaristía; no nos quedemos lejos, él desea curarnos.

From the Heart and Mind of Deacon Chris

I went by a soccer field the other day and there was a young team practicing. I used to coach youth soc-cer and seeing that practice brought back pleasant memo-ries. In the last 30–40 years soccer has really caught on for our youth. Soccer is a great conditioning sport as players are running most of the time. Plus, the entry level into soccer doesn’t really require a high skill set as most 5 year olds can kick a ball!

But what do sports like soccer teach our youth? There is pretty much a universal response from coaches, parents and athletes alike it’s “Life Lessons." Oftentimes parents encourage sports for their children in the hopes that they will learn these valuable lessons and develop good habits through their sporting experience. But what lessons exactly do we hope they’ll learn? And for us as adults, how do we take some of these lessons and values and use them to enrich our own spiritual lives?

One of the biggest lessons learned from sports I think is ‘letting go of our mistakes’. In youth soccer one of the toughest positions to play is goalie. Invariably, the other team will kick the ball past the goalie and score. Particular if it’s a close game, the goalie can feel deflated and dispirited. As a coach you have to let the goalie know you still have confi-dence in them but also learn from the last goal. Maybe reposition yourself? Talk/communicate with your fellow teammates on defense. Plus, as a goalie you see things from a different perspec-tive, you may see the play develop, uti-lize that.

For us, as the saying goes, ‘we’re all sinners’. We’ve all done dumb things, hurt people, and broken the Commandments. But what do we do about it? Obvi-ously, there is the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we admit what we’ve done wrong. But we also can learn from our sins. One of the things for me is that it helps clarify what I want/need to do. I don’t want to do this, but I need to do this. In other words, when we acknowledge our mistakes and acknowledge our sins, it can show us what we need to do. Just like the goalie in soccer where positioning is important. Positioning ourselves in our spiritual lives makes all the difference.

Pase por un campo de fútbol el otro día y había un equipo de jóvenes practicando. Fui entrenador de fútbol juvenil y viendo la práctica me trajo memorias agrada-bles. En los 30–40 años pasados, el fútbol realmente se ha puesto de moda para nuestra juventud. El fútbol es un gran deporte de acondicionamiento ya que los jugadores corren la mayor parte del tiempo. ¡Además, el nivel de entrada en el fútbol realmente no requiere una alta habilidad como que niños de 5 años pueden patear una pelota!

¿Pero qué enseñan los deportes como fútbol, a nuestra juventud? Hay más o menos una respuesta universal de entrenadores, padres y atletas igualmente. Es: “Lecciones de la Vida". A menudo, los padres animan deportes para sus niños en las esperanzas que apren-derán estas lecciones valiosas y desarrollarán hábitos buenos a través de su experiencia deportiva. ¿Pero qué lecciones, exactamente, esperamos que apren-dan? ¿Y para nosotros como adultos, cómo tomamos algunas de estas lecciones y valores y los usamos para enriquecer nuestras propias vidas espirituales? Creo que una de las lecciones principales aprendidas de los

deportes es "dejar ir de nuestros erro-res". En el fútbol juvenil, una de las po-siciones más difíciles es del portero. Invariablemente, el otro equipo patea la pelota pasado el portero ¡y gana un gol! Sobre todo, en una partida reñida, el portero se puede sentir desinflado y desanimado. Como entrenador, tienes que dejar al portero saber que todavía tienes confianza en él; sino también, que aprenda de lo pasado. ¿Quizá us-ted se puede recolocar? Hable y comu-

nicase con sus compañeros de equipo de defensa. Más, como un portero, ves las cosas desde un punto de vista diferente; puedes ver el juego desarrollarse. Utiliza esto.

Para nosotros, como dice el refrán va, 'todos somos pecadores'. Todos hemos hecho cosas tontas, perjudi-cado a alguien, y hemos roto los mandamientos. ¿Pero qué hacemos sobre ello? Obviamente, hay el Sacra-mento de la Reconciliación, donde admitimos lo que hemos hecho incorrecto. Pero también podemos apren-

der de nuestros pecados. Una cosa que me ayuda a mi es clarificar lo que quiero/necesito hacer. No quiero hacer esto, pero tengo que hacer esto. En otras palabras, cuando reco-nocemos nuestros errores y reconocemos nuestros pecados, nos puede mostrar lo que tenemos que hacer. Justo como el portero en

el fútbol donde la colocación es importante. Nuestra colocación en nuestras vidas espiri-tuales hace toda la diferencia.

Ste. Anne de Detroit Catholic Church was

founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac and a group of French settlers on the banks of the Detroit River, near what is now Hart Plaza. The church was the first struc-

ture built as a part of Fort Ponchartrain. Construction began on July 26, 1701,

the Feast Day of St. Anne, two days after Cadillac landed.

Ste. Anne de Detroit Catholic Church is the second oldest, continually operating, Catholic Church in America. At the time of its found-ing the church was central to the lives of the settlers much like it is today for its Parishion-

ers and members of the Southwest Detroit community.

Ste. Anne de Detroit has enjoyed a rich history and remains a vibrant contributor to the resurgence of Southwest Detroit. If you would like to support the missions of Ste.
