The study, done on mice, suggests a stem cell protein called Asrij is a novel regulator of wild type tumour suppressor p53 stability in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). It could help design targeted therapies for myeloproliferative disease, a group of slow-growing blood cancers, according to researchers, including Maneesha S. Inamdar from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bengaluru. “We provide a new mouse model resembling myeloproliferative disease and identify a post-translational regulator of wild type p53 essential for maintaining HSC quiescence that could be a potential target for pharmacological intervention,” the team said. According to the study, published in the journal Blood, inactivation of the tumour suppressor p53 is essential for unrestrained growth of cancers. "The increase in employment activity and the success of cannabis companies are pushing agricultural land and house prices higher in tertiary markets," reads a new report from Altus Group, a real estate data firm. Tertiary markets are a step below major markets, like Toronto and Vancouver, and secondary markets, such as Ontario's Kitchener– Waterloo and Guelph. Altus Group highlights two Ontario tertiary markets that benefit from the influence of cannabis: the municipality of Leamington and the town of Smiths Falls. Researchers note that Leamington land values have gotten a boost from pot grower Aphria Inc., which operates greenhouses in the city. Meantime, Smith Falls real estate has reaped the rewards of Canopy Growth Corp, owner of the popular Tokyo Smoke brand, following its revitalization of a disused Hershey's factory. Both markets had been depressed after previous manufacturer de- partures, with unemployment rates rising. But the arrival of cannabis-production facilities supports a rebound. "They're drawing employees from other areas," Kruti Desai, manager, national research insights, data solutions at Altus Group, tells Livabl. Desai notes that these companies require specialized roles to oper- ate their high-tech growing facilities. The arrival of cannabis companies also suppor ts the local economy as it creates opportunities for other businesses to step in and offer services to the new facilities and employees. NOVEL APP MAY PREDICTHERNIA RISK AFTER

ABDOMINAL SURGERY

Take short breaks to learn new skillsIn a new study the researchers have highlighted the impor tance of takingsmall breaks during learning. The study published in the journal Current Biology found that our brains maysolidify the memories of new skills we just practised a few seconds earlierby taking a shor t rest. The results highlight the critically important role restmay play in learning.“Everyone thinks you need to ‘practice, practice, practice’ when learningsomething new. Instead, we found that resting, early and often, maybe just ascritical to learning as practice,” said Leonardo G. Cohen, a senior author ofthe study.“Our ultimate hope is that the results of our experiments will help patientsrecover from the paralysing effects caused by strokes and other neurologicalinjuries by informing the strategies they use to ‘relearn’ lost skills.”The study was led by Marlene Bonstrup. Like many scientists, she held thegeneral belief that our brains needed long periods ofrest, such as a good night’s sleep, to strengthenthe memories formed while practising a newlylearned skill. But after looking at brain wavesrecorded from healthy volunteers in learningand memory experiments, she star ted toquestion the idea. The waves were recorded from right-handed volunteers with a highly sen-sitive scanning technique calledmagnetoencephalography(MEG). The subjects sat ona chair facing a com-puter screen and un-der a long cone-shaped brains c a n n i n gcap.T h eex-

periment began when they were shown a series of numbers on a screen andasked to type the numbers as many times as possible with their left hands for10 seconds; take a 10-second break, and then repeat this trial cycle of alter-nating practice and rest 35 more times. This strategy is typically used to reduce any complications that could arisefrom fatigue or other factors. As expected, the volunteers’ speed at which they correctly typed the num-bers improved dramatically during the first few trials and then levelled offaround the 11th cycle. When Dr Bonstrup looked at the volunteers’ brainwaves she observed something interesting.“I noticed that par ticipants’ brain waves seemed to change much moreduring the rest periods than during the typing sessions,” said Dr Bonstrup.“This gave me the idea to look much more closely for when learning wasactually happening. Was it during practice or rest?”

By reanalysing the data, she and her colleagues made two keyfindings. First, they found that the volunteers’ per formance im-

proved primarily during the shor t rests, and not during typing. The improvements made during the rest periods added up tothe overall gains the volunteers made that day. Moreover, these gains were much greater than the ones seen after thevolunteers returned the next day to try again, suggesting that

the early breaks played as critical a role in learning asthe practising itself.

Second, by looking at the brainwaves, Dr Bons t rup

found ac t iv i typ a t t e r n s

that

s u g -gested the

v o l u n t e e r s ’brains were consolidat-

ing, or solidifying, memories during the rest periods. Specifically, they found that the changes in the size of brain waves, called betarhythms, correlated with the improvements the volunteers madeduring the rests.Fur ther analysis suggested that the changes in beta oscillationsprimarily happened in the right hemispheres of the volunteers’brains and along neural networks connecting the frontal and pari-etal lobes that are known to help control the planning of move-ments. These changes only happened during the breaks and werethe only brain wave patterns that cor related with per formance.“Our results suggest that it may be important to optimise the timingand configuration of rest intervals when implementing rehabilitativetreatments in stroke patients or when learning to play the piano innormal volunteers,” said Dr Cohen. “Whether these results applyto other forms of learning and memory formation remains an openquestion.”Dr Cohen’s team plans to explore, in greater detail, the role ofthese early resting periods in learning and memor y.

Researchers have created an app that may predict the like-lihood of developing an incisional hernia following an ab-dominal surgery, using Big Data analytics to potentiallyhelp address a problem effects one out of every eight ofthese surgical patients. The team developed the app utilising electronic healthrecords (EHR) to identify the most common risk factors forpatients, as well as which surgeries most commonly re-sult in incisional hernias across multiple specialties.“Our tool presents the risk for each case at the point ofcare, giving surgeons and patients the chance to considerthis outcome ahead of time and incorporate data into thedecision-making process,” said co-author John P. Fischerfrom the University of Pennsylvania.Incisional hernias occur after abdominal surgery at thesite of the surgical wound when the contents of the abdo-men can push through the muscle. For the study, presented at the 139th American SurgicalAssociation Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, the teamanalysed the EHRs of 29,739 patients undergoing intra-abdominal, urologic, or gynecological surgery at Penn be-tween January 2005 and June 2016.They found more than 1,100 of these patients (3.8%) endedup requiring a second surgery following the primary op-eration to repair the incisional hernias.Colorectal surgeries were the most common specialtyassociated with incision hernias (7.7% of cases), followedby vascular (5.2%), bariatric (4.8%), and transplant (4.5%).The analysis also identified risk factors that made a pa-tient more likely to develop an incisional hernia. The most common was a history of abdominal surgery, which increased the likelihood in 87.5% of cases. Thatwas followed by a history of smoking and a recent infec-tion (75% for both). Obesity was also a significant risk, though it was weighted less than other factors.

IN A HAPPY SPACE

APARNA BANERJI

At a very young age, Varun Dhawanand Alia Bhatt, celebrated as ‘the’Bollywood pair for their sparkling onscreen chemistry, have earned respectfor their unusual and challenging roles. The duo stopped over in Jalandhar fortheir shor t, but simulating gig at theLovely Professional University.Despite an extremely politically chargedBollywood, and the ongoing controversyover the Modi biopic, the duo — knownto keep a distance from politics - saidas young actors they were happy to bein their own space. Both dressed in a traditional attire(almost colour-coordinated) in blueand pink, they spoke at lengthabout their ‘mutually’ intense and‘consuming’ outing in the perioddrama Kalank for which Alia gaveup coffee and Varun, chicken. Hereare excerpts from the conversation:What amount of hard work didKalank take?Varun: Af ter Badlapur, many peoplewere asking me why I wasn’t do-ing an intense character. With Zafar,

I felt those things after many years. Iplay a lohar (blacksmith) in the film andhad to look ribbed on certain areas. Irequested the makers to get a gym onsets. I followed a scientific diet andgymmed thrice a day. During the mak-ing, my personal life took a backseat.Alia: This role was particularly chal-lenging for me. A lot of Roop (the char-acter Alia plays in Kalank) — is inter-nal. She can’t be external. I used to callAbhishek the ‘inception’ of directorsbecause he would ask me to givean emotion within an emotion withinan emotion. I have scraped through somany layers within myself. PlayingRoop made me reach corners andpoints within myself, which I probablynever knew till a few days ago. What do you admire about eachother?Varun: Her sehensheelta (pa-tience); the way she conducts her-self in public.
