Time to face an ugly reality: Canada is losing the battle to provideaffordable housing. Despite a raft of regulations to cool house pricesand new programs to build more affordable homes, home prices arenow rising faster than incomes once again, and rents are showing nosigns of easing.A recent repor t from Royal Bank of Canada estimated that Torontoneeds to be building twice as many rental units (condos and apar t-ments) to keep up with population growth. All those cranes on thehorizon aren’t actually enough.Unless we want to return to the era of unbridled suburban sprawl, thatwill mean building more housing in existing urban areas. Sometimesoon, when developers run out of post-industrial land next to railyards

to build high-rises, we will have to address the fact that the vastmajority of residential land in Canada’s metro areas is zoned forsingle-family homes. Many U.S. states on the East and West coasts are facing similarproblems, and Oregon, for one, has taken a substantial step: It’s passeda law to end neighbourhoods zoned exclusively for single-familyhomes. Cities with 25,000 or more people will have to allow du-plexes, triplexes, fourplexes and townhomes to be built in all residen-tial areas. California — where the housing shor tage has led to an epichomelessness crisis — is now looking at a similar law. Opponents ?the “not in my backyard” or NIMBY crowd ? say it would mean theend of the suburban lifestyle: The quiet, idyllic nature of suburbanneighbourhoods would be replaced by louder, more urbanneighbourhoods with heavier traffic. But suppor ters of the idea ? the “yes in my backyard” or YIMBYcrowd ? say this kind of “gentle densification” would do little to changethe character of single-family home areas, while taking serious stepstowards more affordable housing and more sustainable cities. It’s well established that detached-home neighbourhoods use more energy andput a much larger burden on municipal infrastructure, per person, than higher-density neighbourhoods. It’s not a coincidence that Toronto — the only city in theGreater Toronto Area with any real urban density — has the lowest residentialproperty taxes of any city in the region, while the least dense, mostoutlying communities tend to have the highest.

Volkswagen engineered its latest Golf to be its most technologically ad-vanced model to date. The exterior is familiar, but inside the compact hatch-back has a fully digital instrument cluster that can be configured by using itsmultifunction steering wheel. "The real revolution is in the interior," saidNicole Hempe, the Golf's product marketing manager. "With the InnovisionCockpit, analog dials are history." The eighth-generation Golf is also the firstVW brand car to date to have Car2X technology. This allows the vehicle to commu-nicate with other cars up to 875 yards away. The feature will, for example, enablethe Golf to warn drivers coming up from behind that traffic has stopped, or to aler tthe Golf's driver when an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind.Volkswagen Canada says it should arrive in the 2021 calendar year. Like all newVWs, the base version has emergency braking assistance with pedestrian recog-nition to prevent accidents and collisions. It also now has active lane keeping, designed to correct the car's path, provided road markings are clear enough for thevehicle to detect. All Golfs whatever their specification have an embedded cellularmodem with access to VW's digital user platform, marketed as We, which servesas a central hub for services connected to the vehicle.

Both obesity and diabetes are on rise in India and numbers are in-creasing at an alarming rate. There have been studies that have provena direct link between the two. The potentially bad combination ofdiabetes and obesity has been termed as diabesity. It has become amajor area of concern lately owing to the sedentary life style and dietindulgences of almost every age group and income strata of our coun-try. So this New Year, here are some health-oriented resolutions thatwill not only help you stay fit but keep you out of the dangerousdiabesity zone. Choose the right protein: Switch from red and fatten-ing meat to lean and healthy meats such as salmon and other fish andchicken, organic eggs and other poultry items. Reduce your oil in-take: Switch from hydrogenated and solid oils to oils that are liquid atroom temperature such as flaxseed oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, etc.

HERE’S A THROWBACK TO DEEPIKA PADUKONE’SFASHION AND BEAUTY EVOLUTION IN BOLLYWOOD

If there’s one actor who has captured public imagination withher beauty and her acting prowess over the past few years,it’s Deepika Padukone. In the years she’s been active in theHindi film industry (2007 onwards), there isn’t enough thathas already been spoken about Deepika’s style and how sheis truly magical whether on screen or on the red carpet. Herskill infront of the camera and the choices she’s made havegot her the accolades in these years, but it’s her beauty andstyle evolution that truly takes the cake. We’ve witnessed how Deepika has cultivated a signaturesense of style and beauty through a constant evolutionwhether in terms of her makeup or fashion choices. From ultra glossy lips, coloured contact lenses and pokerstraight hair in a few of her earlier films, to smokey eyes, tousled hair and even a new haircut more recently, we’veseen how Deepika Padukone’s image only gets fiercer witheach passing year. From power ful pant-suits to gowns to fittedmonochrome dresses to sarees, with help from her stylistShaleena Nathani, make-up ar tist Sandhya Shekar andhairstylist Gabriel Georgiou, Deepika never misses theoppor tunity to leave us starstruck.Deepika Padukone has worn several interesting and innova-tive creations by fashion designers namely Prabal Gurung,Ashi Studio, Zuhair Murad, Giambattista Valli, EmiliaWickstead to name a few. When it comes to choosing tradi-tional Indian wear, Sabyasachi has Deepika’s go-to designerwho also did most of her bridal trousseau and jewellery forher November 2018 wedding. More recently however, we’vespotted her in dresses with an Indian twist and heavily-embroidered suits at a friend’s wedding, followed by her firstanniversary celebrations. For Chhapaak promotions,Deepika’s back to experimentation but has chosen ampleblack outfits in the past two weeks. The one thing we did notice Deepika Padukone kept a constantwas her choice of the colour red in several of her outfits overthe last many years. We even came to the conclusion thatthere is not quite anyone else in Bollywood who looks so goodin red that we can hardly ascer tain if she belongs to thecolour red or the colour red belongs to her. More recently(mid-2019), we’ve seen this choice of colour shifting to a lotof whites. It was also in 2019, when Deepika broke hercomfor table image and went all out to give the legendary tulletheir moment under the sun (or the limelight) since she worethe lime-green Giambattista Valli gown (the hot pink Ashi

Studio gown did make waves and was spoken about once again whenBeyonce wore the same creation, but Cannes 2019 red carpet seemedlike a renewed effor t), followed by the black and pink gown at one ofMAMI’s events in 2019. We don’t know what to call this phase, but itcould be Ranveer Singh’s experimental trait that Deepika has begunadopting and we’re surely not complaining. As the actor turns 34 today and prepares for the release what she callsthe toughest film of her career yet, Chhapaak, here’s a throwback toher beauty and style evolution from year 2007 onwards:2007: The debutante Deepika Padukone attended one of her first filmpromotions for Om Shanti Om in London in an ultra-feminine make-uplook.2008: Deepika Padukone kicked off her Bollywood career choosing toadopt a ‘less is more’ look. For a press conference for her film BachnaAe Haseeno, she went for dramatic lashes, and otherwise subtlemakeup.2009: Spor ting eyeliner, lip gloss, and poker straight hair withan in-your-face fringe, Deepika Padukone’s goth-glam look forChandni Chowk To China is one of her more daring looks yet.2010: Deepika Padukone added a cool, casual vibe to her lookwith a layered shor t haircut and sof t, smokey eyes at a launchevent for a magazine. Her look is playful and vibrant with a

little detour from her usual hair and make-up routine.2011: We saw the very beginning of Deepika Padukone’s glamcurls, when she paired them with a radiant skin and a coral-shade for her lips.2012: The year 2012 and her role as Veronica was a break-through in many ways when we speak of Deepika’s fashion. When it comes to sprucing up the basic ponytail, Deepika is anace. At an event to promote her then upcoming film, she wore adreamy, curled, low ponytail with subtle winged liner and amuted, natural lip shade.2013: Deepika Padukone stunned the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani trailerlaunch with her natural-looking, long, blow-dried hair. As for her make-up, she amped up the glam factor with a some eyeliner, rosy cheeks, and a pink glossy lip. Her looks in the film still remain one of the most-talked-about ones whether it’s the midnight blue saree or the lehengathat she wore throughout Kalki’s character’s wedding functions in thefilm.2014: Deepika Padukone made this fabulous retro hairdo look glamand casual at the same time during an award show appearance. She’swearing a bold lip and big lashes – a timeless, fierce look that looksfabulous on her.2015: Deepika Padukone pulled off a sexy smokey eye makeupand bold red lip in this look of hers for a TV show appearance.2016: This Deepika Padukone look created quite a of buzz. Theactor chose minimal make-up, wearing a nude lipper andnatural lashes. She paired her dazzling olive and black thigh-high slit ensemble with shoulder dusters (tassel earrings).2017: Everything about Deepika Padukone’s Cannes FilmFestival 2018 look spells per fection. The tousled, fluffy hairwith beaming highlight and the elegant yet sultry makeupchoice created a divine, yet slightly retro look.2018: At a red carpet event, donning an all-black ensemble,Deepika Padukone stole the spotlight with her long, braided, high ponytail. Her minimal make-up and dramatic eyes werethe per fect companion for the extravagant hair and traffic-stopping outfit. 2018 was also the year we were treated to herbridal outfits and the functions that followed and we’ve beenmore in love since.2019: With a completely new hair-do and lots of interestinglooks Deepika Padukone has spor ted in 2019 with a bit of aspillover onto this year, fashion-lovers can opine that it’s thebest year yet for the actor’s fashion sensibilties, after probablyher glorious looks for Cocktail back in 2012.Here’s wishing the powerhouse talent a great year ahead!

IN STYLE AT THEIR BEACHY VACATIONSWe are in the first week of 2020 and unfor tunately, it is the end of theholiday season, but not for everyone. It seems a lot of Bollywoodcelebrities can’t shake off the vacation hangover and are still on holi-day. And their Instagram posts from warm sun-kissed beaches areturning us, shivering in Delhi’s winters, green with envy. However, their holiday snaps are setting some stylish goals too.Alia Bhatt went on vacation with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor and bestieAyan Mukherji and posted a series of pictures wearing bright colour fulbikinis, flaunting her vacation glow, but it was her matching SummerSomewhere Shop co-ord checked ensemble that looked super cool.Priyanka Chopra Jonas also headed for a beachy vacation with hus-band and musician Nick Jonas and some friends, she looked ubercool as she sipped some bubbly at the beach in an orange-red swim-suit and a white overlay. Total Baywatch vibes.Sara Ali Khan spent her New Year soaking up the sun and catching

some waves with brother Ibrahim and mother Amrita Singh in theMaldives. She posted several pictures wearing super fun bikinis, chilling in thepool with huge floats and even going snorkelling with her mother andbrother.Sara spor ted stripes, animal prints and typography too on her bikinis, and looked like she was having a great time at the luxury resor t shewas at.Katrina Kaif too headed to Goa to attend a wedding, she looked abso-lutely stunning in a picture she posted wearing a Rebecca Dewanlight blue heavily embroidered lehenga with an organza jacket withpuffy sleeves from the Saira collection. She was in Goa for her hair and make-up ar tist Daniel Bauer’s wed-ding to his boyfriend Tyrone.Katrina posted several pictures from the wedding on her story, shesported minimal make-up and had her hair open in loose waves.

CONTD. FROM PAGE 25VIBRANT MASCARAThis year everything will be colour ful including the mascara. The colourful make-up trend was huge last year and recentlymascaras have also joined the bandwagon. The time has come to ditchthe usual black mascara and experiment with different colours. If you area bit apprehensive about coloured mascara then go for some shadeswhich are not too bright like blue or green. NO MAKE-UP LOOKCurrently, everything larger than life is trending and the no make-up lookmight come as a shock to you. Though many Bollywood ladies endorsedthe trend, 2020 will see most ladies going for the no make-up look. It ismuch simpler than applying loads and loads of make-up on your skin. Itmakes your face look fresher.BUSHY EYEBROWSThis is the best news of 2020 so far, right ladies? The time of havingpolished and structured eyebrows is gone, now ladies flaunt their naturaleyebrows. The trend of having the perfect shape is replaced by this bushybrows and we fully support that. This requires plucking out the minimalhair from the brows and then you are done. You don’t need to sit through thepainful process of getting a particular shape.DARK LIP COLOURSColours like red, purple, brown and many others will be a major hit in 2020.These colours look very modern in the present time and they match everyskin tone. If you are new in selecting such shades then opt for subtlemauve tone than going for berry red just at the start.GLITTERY EYESGlitters have been a constant hit regardless of the era and 2020will be no different. Glitter eyeshadows and liners are going tobe a big thing and we have accepted that. Applying them isvery easy but removing them requires a bit of an effor t. So,know everything before dipping your fingers into it.MISMATCHED EYESHADOWIt might sound weird but if you love experimenting then thistrend is totally for you. No need to use one colour for eyeshadow, you can use two different colours for them. If your dress haspink and yellow, your eyeshadows can reflect the same colourscheme.SUBTLE LIP STAINLadies, you don’t always have to go for bold lip colours, in2020 the subtle lip stain is going to be the major trend. It pro-vides a hazy and dreamy look to the lips and is very low onmaintenance as well.

Voluminous hair, sharp contouring and more:Beauty trends we look forward to in 2020

2020 will see a lot of beauty spillover of the last year - from themessy chignons of the brides to a more dewy natural makeup tomatt lips. However, the overall beauty focus will be on a radianthealthy skin. We got exper ts to predict key beauty trends for 2020.A return to natural make-upMakeup maven Clint Fernandes says, “2020 will see a return to a pared-back takeon makeup techniques. Nothing too overdone in terms of makeup but a more focuson artfully dishevelled hair.” It’s all about voluminous hairThink mega volume big hair seen on the runway on Valentino runwayand you get the drift. “The hyper voluminous hair realised in ex-aggerated volume will be the key trend,” adds Clint. If Marie Antoinette met fortea with Brigitte Bardot, the two beauties will sport these statement hair. Also,Jennifer Lopez who walked for Versace last year brought back the focus on cloudgrazing mane.Say hello to couture bobThink the precisely chopped mane for Her Vogueness AnnaWintour. “I see the constructed couture bobs making their pres-ence felt like never before,” says Clint.Faded hair-cut for dudesThe fade never really went out of favour - be it Bollywood orHollywood. “It’s sharply cut sharp cut and it’s faded from thenape of the neck to the temple area. However, it does require a lotof maintenance,” says Clint.Neons ruleDior Men runway was awash with neon eye makeup and lookslike the craze for fluorescent hues isn’t fading out. “The fluores-cent theme will be major in 2020 too ranging from bright neons toshocking pinks,” says makeup ar tist Vipul Bhagat.”Smokey eye meet nude makup”The smokey eye with nude lips and a hint of blush will be the keybeauty look. There will be an emphasis on good skin along withclean eyes styled with a glossy mascara,” says Clint. “There will

be green and blue variations of smokey eyes,” quips Vipul.Dewy face with matt mouthI see a lot of girls opting for a clean look with a bright matt mouthfor their wedding functions. The dewy face makeup with sheen, pretty makeup is what brides are opting for along with elaboratehair styled with soft curls. Messy buns will be a popular pick forbrides as girls will like to see little gaps in their hair,” says Vipul.Sharp contouring”I see a lot of sharp contouring with a sheen on the face to subtlyhighlight the cheek bones,” adds Vipul.

Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, AliaBhatt show how to style chokers with a saree

Sarees have a way of making any woman look her feminine best, itimmediately forces one to carry themselves with grace and elegance. And if runway trends and the style statements that Bollywood celebritiesmade in the past year are anything to go by, it is quite evident that thesaree has come back in style in a huge way.Whether its Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Alia Bhatt, AnushkaSharma, Sonam Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Priyanka Chopra, or any lead-ing lady for that matter, we have seen them all spor t six-yards of el-egance in the past year. But we noticed another accessory that the celeb-rities spor ted along with this traditional attire that set many style goals, and we are certain it will be big in the year 2020 as well. We’re talking about the choker! While chokers have always been in style, especially the heavily embellished ones, it was only in the past year thatwe saw more and more of our celebs wearing it on different traditionaloutfits, be it a lehenga, salwar kameez or a saree. But wearing it on a saree trulytakes your ensemble to a whole new level. Take a cue from your favourites

Bollywood celebrities on how to wear a choker with a saree! What we see most celebrities like Alia, Anushka, Deepika and Sonamdo, it that they wear the chokers with their sarees, but their hair isalways styled neatly so that it doesn’t spill over their face. This gives amore defined look, and you won’t end up looking like a mess.Sonam Kapoor’s Anamika Khanna saree and coat combo, with heroxidised choker and dark make-up, was a great look.Alia’s pretty pink enamel choker with matching earrings, minimal dewymake-up looked great with her blue Manish Malhotra saree.Anushka, a constant lover of Sabyasachi Mukerji’s work, has beenspotted on more than one occasion spor ting a huge choker with hersaree.A style tip for those still experimenting with their saree-chokerlook, if your saree is heavy wear a simple choker like Kanganahas here. But on the other hand, if your saree is simple wear aheavy choker to balance the lookout.

A HEART-HEALTHY DIET

Recently, US News & World Report released its annual assessment ofthe year’s Best Diets. It was a tie between the Meditarranean Diet and theOrnish Diet for the numero uno spot for the Best Heart-Healthy Diet. Whilethe former has been much written and spoken about, we asked exper tsfor their thought on the latter, lesser-known diet. The Ornish Diet was created by Dean Ornish, MD, president and founderof a non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in California, US.He suggested that a vegetarian diet can reverse symptoms of heartdisease, way back in the early ’90s. Ornish and his research team arguedthat a vegetarian diet in conjuction with exercise can reduce stress andhelp people lose weight. He was considered a revolutionary at that time.Apparently, former US President Bill Clinton follows this diet, as Ornishwas his health consultant.THE DIETHere are some guidelines of the eating plan:Eat plants mostly in their natural forms. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy.Have small frequent meals throughout the day and portion control isadvised.Meat, poultry, fish and egg yolks are not allowed. Egg whites are allowed.Instead, eat plant-based proteins like tofu, tempeh, beans, and legumes.Sugar is permitted in moderation, but not encouraged. Added sugarssuch as maple syrup, agave, honey, white or brown sugar, along withnon-fat sweets, and refined carbohydrates are to be limited to not morethan two servings/day.Limit refined carbs like white flour and white rice to less than two servingsa day.Alcohol is allowed in limited amount. Just one serving a day.No more than 10 per cent of daily calorie intake should come from fats. This includes not adding any fats, oils, avocados, coconut and olives tothe diet. These 10 per cent of calories should come from fat that occursnaturally in plant foods and small amounts of nuts and seeds.A total of 4 grams a day of healthy fats in the form of omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil, nuts and seeds.Exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week or 60 minutes thrice aweek.Caffeine is better avoided. If not, then limit it to one cup coffee/ two cupsdecaf / two cups of black tea a day.A low dose multivitamin, mineral supplement with B-12 and fish oil.Calcium, if recommended by a doctor.A GOOD OPTION FOR VEGETARIANSThere are many plant-based diets that are heart-healthy. Dr SantoshKumar Dora, senior cardiologist, Asian Heart Institute, says that theOrnish diet is a vegetarian one (with the exception of egg whites), there’sno animal and saturated fat, it aims at just 10 per cent fat intake in a day, focusses on consuming veggies, fruits, grains, etc, so it will be a goodoption for vegetarians. However, he says, “Many non-vegetarians mightnot want to completely give up meat and fish, and why be harsh on them? There are alternative healthy diets for them, like the Meditarranean diet, which includes lean meats such as fish and chicken.” The only draw-back of the Ornish Diet is that people will be hungry often, since the fatpercentage is restricted.MUST BE CUSTOMISED AS PER INDIVIDUAL NEEDSConsidering the dos and don’ts of the eating plan, it will help in improvingthe overall health as well as hear t health of the individual, provided it isdesigned keeping in mind a person’s individual conditions as well, opinesPallavi Srivastava, fitness nutritionist, proprietor — Q-Slim Fitness Stu-dio. She adds that this kind of diet will require supplementation of certainvitamins and minerals like calcium, Vitamin B and zinc as certain amountof fat is required by the body to absorb the B group of vitamins. Also, it isimpor tant that a good exercise regime is also followed along with anydiet, total amount of hydration is also kept in mind.SCEPTIC SPEAKBased on the results of the Ornish study — the small randomised trialupon which all the famous claims regarding the Ornish diet are based —the notion that an ultra-low fat vegetarian diet improves Coronary ArteryDisease (CAD), should be regarded as an intriguing hypothesis. It isimpossible to attribute any of this benefit specifically to the Ornish diet. This is because the other three interventions applied to the study group(smoking cessation, stress management, and regular exercise) are allknown to improve cardiac outcomes in patients with CAD, says DrNarayan Gadkar, cardiologist, Zen Multi Specialty Hospital, adding, “It isone of the options that can be offered, though not the only diet option. I feela diet always needs to be customised based on an individual’s compli-ance.”DIETARY ADVICEDr Narayan Gadkar shares the following gudielines:Reduce saturated fats. They are found primarily in red meat and full-fatdairy products, which raise your total cholesterol.Eliminate trans fats. They are sometimes listed on food labels as ‘par-tially hydrogenated vegetable oil,’ and is often used in margarines, store-bought biscuits and cakes.Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, herring, walnuts and flaxseeds.Increase your intake of soluble fibre found in foods like oatmeal, kidneybeans, brussels sprouts, apples and pears.Add whey protein to your diet. It is found in dairy products, may account formany of the health benefits attributed to dairy.

Maximalism, power suiting and more: Fashion trends to look forward to in 20202020 ushers in a rather pared-down approach to style. Think adven-turous dressing which brings out the individuality of the dresser ratherthan something which is trend-driven. While athleisure will continueto be the key trend, it’ll be mixed with old school tailoring. Think longand lean silhouettes, tunics teamed with pants, craft based accesso-ries and a toned-down take on sequins and feathers.PARED-DOWN SPARKLEDesigner duo Falguni Shane Peacock see a tone down treatment ofembellishments like feathers. “It took some time for people to adaptto head-to-toe sparkle and voluminous lehenga skir ts and I see thesetwo key trends continuing in the new year though with a polish andedited take. The interplay of sheer with textures for brides will be thekey bridal story and I see them gravitating towards statement en-sembles which come with dramatic trails and sheer leggings. I alsosee bombers though in a relativelty minimal avatar making their im-pact for another year. However the OTT souvenir jackets will fade out.In terms of footwear I see sneakers and cowboy boots making theirimpact like never before,” says Falguni.A RETURN TO FEEL-GOOD MAXIMALISMIf 2019 was about uninhibited maximalism, 2020 heralds a feel-goodapproach to the luxury retail experience. Designer Suneet Varma says,“Today’s well-travelled customers are getting adventurous when it

comes to their purchases. I see women becoming more daring anditching to try out interesting things and redefining their personal stylein a more whimsical manner and often laced with irreverence andwit. Think romantic dressing spiced with quirkiness.”GLAM-LEISURE REDUXDesigners see leather makes its presence felt like never before andalso animal prints continuing to be a key runway trend. DesignerNamrata Joshipura opines that given by the Pre-Fall outings of brandslike Proenza Schouler, it’ll be a playful take on silhouette mash-upand deconstruction techniques. “I see a lot of boot-leg pants, tunicsworn with pants but every thing exuding a spor ty vibe with a sliver ofglam. I also see a return to power suiting in soft hues like salmonpink. Influencers like Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid have put the spot-light on sweatshirts, shor ts and leggings. I see a delightful clash ofevening glam with street touches like a pair of flared high waistedsequin shorts worn with blazers and stockings,” says Namrata.TRAINERS ON THE RED CARPETDesigner Monisha Jaising, “I don’t think uber glam evening aestheticis going to go given that there’s so much of unrest in the world andeconomies and everyone is looking for an escape route. I don’t thinkthis fashion wonderland is going to go. I see people finding happinessin this make-believe, fairytale wonderland called fashion. On the other

side, I see athleisure assuming bigger propor tions and I see a lot oftrainers on the red carpet. I also see a lot of collaboration betweendesigner names and activewear labels.”

MAGAZINES TEND TO EXAGGERATE FERTILITYAT ADVANCED REPRODUCTIVE AGE: STUDY

Quit over-cushioning your kids

Popular magazines featuring older pregnant celebrities on their cov-ers with no mention of the risks attached to it, contribute to women'sbelief that they can safely put off pregnancy until later ages, a recentstudy suggests. The findings have shown that popular magazines commonly featureolder pregnant celebrities on their covers with no mention of the risksof advanced maternal age pregnancy or the advanced reproductivetechnologies and methods needed to achieve these pregnancies.According to the team of researchers, by downplaying fer tility de-cline with advancing age, these magazines tend to contribute towomen's belief that they can safely put off pregnancy until later ages.As par t of the study, published in the Journal of Women's Health, theresearchers examined 416 magazine issues aimed at reproductive-aged women and found that fer tility was highlighted on one-third of

the covers, which included the mention of 240 different celebrities.More than half were of advanced maternal age (AMA), but there wereonly two mentions of pregnancy risks associated with (AMA). A thirdof the AMA pregnancies were among celebrities aged 40 or older, yetin the accompanying ar ticles, there was little or no discussion of theneed for advanced interventions to achieve pregnancy, such as invitro fer tilization and the need for donor gametes."It's easy to get drawn in by the cover of a popular magazine featuringa happily pregnant celebrity in her late 30s or early 40s and to thinkthat fertility is the norm at that stage in a woman's reproductive life.Often left unsaid though the costly and extraordinary measures, as-sisted reproductive technologies, and risks associated with theselater-in-life pregnancies," said Susan G. Kornstein, MD, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Women's Health.

Parents go the extra mile to give the best to their children, do every-thing possible to make their lives smoother. Sometimes, being overlyprotective has its share of pitfalls, and they’re ‘snowploughing’ theirkids. In recent times, the term ‘Snowploughing Parents’ has emergedto describe them. Read on to know more...WHAT IS IT?The term ‘snowploughing’ is coined for parents who notonly aggressively push their children to become achieversbut also involves removing any obstacles that may stand inthe way of their success. Whether it’s requesting schoolteachers to dish special treatment to their kids or doingtheir child’s assignments themselves to score high marksor not letting their little ones deal with little problems ontheir own.SHIFT IN PARENTING STYLEParenting styles have changed. Strict and discipliningparenting style has changed to become understanding andsuppor tive. Parents thrive on giving the best to their chil-dren and at times end up overdoing it, finding it difficult todraw the line. They’re making their child dependent versusmaking them independent and emotionally stronger, saysclinical psychologist and psychotherapist, Mansi Hasan.Three out of five parents that she comes across, havesnowploughing tendencies.THE RISE OF SNOWPLOUGHING PARENTSPsychiatrist and psychotherapist, Dr Anjali Chhabria haswitnessed a rise in such cases, amongst all socio-eco-nomic classes, especially in the urban areas. “This hap-pens when parents become overprotective by cushioningthe child from obstacles and failures. They are afraid thattheir children will make a wrong decision and thus, try tomake everything per fect for their children. What they fail torealise is that by doing so, they don’t allow kids to learnfrom their mistakes, experience minor failures, and makedecisions independently, which is all a part of growing up.”HAMPERS CHILD’S DEVELOPMENTLoss, sadness, disappointment, failure are a par t andparcel of life just as success, happiness, content andreward. Mansi adds, “It’s crucial that a child learns todeal with positive as well as negative emotions else, parents are actually disabling their ability to cope.

TIGER OR JELLYFISH - WHAT KIND OF A PARENT ARE YOU?LAWNMOWER PARENTSThey are called so because they ‘mow down’ a path for their kids eliminating all obstacles, which may cause challenges or discomfort.TIGER PARENTSYou’ve surely read or heard of the term ‘Tiger moms’! Well, Tiger parents are an extension of it. These folks are known for placing the utmost importance and strivefor excellence in academics and carefully cherry-picked extracurricular activities neglecting leisure time. Also, they have high expectations from their youngones. HUMMINGBIRD PARENTSThose who come under this group are the muted version of their helicopter counterparts. They hover around but do not interfere excessively in theirchildren’s decisions. They are physically and emotionally closeby to swoop in if their young ones need their help. However, they try not to decideeverything for them or shield them completely from struggles.

MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS

‘A brief course of acupuncture mayhelp ease troublesome menopausalsymptoms, such as excess sweating, mood swings, sleep disturbances, astudy has found.

A brief course of acupuncture may help ease troublesome meno-pausal symptoms, such as excess sweating, mood swings, sleepdisturbances, a study has found.According to researchers from University of Copenhagen in Denmarkamong women dealing with moderate to severe symptoms, acupunc-ture was also associated with reductions in hot flushes, as well asskin and hair problems. The research, published in the journal BMJ Open, acupuncture offersan alternative for women who can not, or do not want to, use hormonereplacement therapy (HRT).Menopausal symptoms are common, and depending on their sever-ity, can have a major impact on quality of life, health and well-being,as well as productivity.Hot flushes are one of the most common symptoms, and these can goon for several years. However, others include heavy sweating, emo-tional vulnerability, sleep disturbances, fatigue, ‘fuzzy’ brain, jointpain, vaginal dryness and reduced sex drive.Hormonal and other drugs can treat the various symptoms, but theyare not without side effects. The evidence for other non-pharmaco-logical approaches, such as exercise, relaxation, and herbal or di-etary remedies, is not very convincing, researchers said.Previous research suggests that acupuncture might be helpful, butdesign flaws or quality issues have undermined the findings. In a bid to address this, the researchers randomly allocated 70 meno-pausal women to either five weeks of standardised Western medicalacupuncture, using pre-defined acupuncture points, or no acupunc-ture until after six weeks. Each weekly session lasted 15 minutes, and was delivered by doctors from nine different general practices, who had additionally trained in acupuncture, and had been practisingit for an average of 14 years. Each par ticipant completed a validated Meno Scores (MSQ) ques-tionnaire-designed to measure outcomes from the patient’s perspec-tive before their first session and then again after 3, 6, 8, 11 and 26

weeks. The MSQ comprised 11 graded scales for each of: hot flushes;day and night sweats; general sweating; sleep disturbance; emo-tional vulnerability; memory changes; skin and hair problems; physi-cal symptoms; abdominal symptoms; urinary and vaginal symptoms;and fatigue. At six weeks most (80 per cent) of the women in theacupuncture group, said that they felt that the sessions had helpedthem. Compared with those who had not been given acupuncture, they were significantly less troubled by hot flushes-a difference thatwas already apparent after three weeks of ‘treatment’.Statistically significant differences also emerged between the twogroups in the severity/frequency of day and night sweats, generalsweating, sleep disturbances, emotional and physical symptoms, and skin and hair problems. The drop-out rate was low, with just one woman failing to complete allfive acupuncture sessions, and no serious side effects were repor ted.The researchers acknowledge that the treatment period lasted justfive weeks and that a major difficulty in all acupuncture trials is thelack of a proper comparator. This means that a placebo effect cannot be ruled out, researcherssaid, and further discussions are war ranted about what level of evi-dence is acceptable. The findings show that a brief course of acupuncture by suitably trainedprofessionals is feasible in routine primary care for both doctors andpatients.

Do you think you could lead a happy married life? The answer isin your genes, a new study has said.Although prior research has hinted that marital quality is, atleast partially, impacted by genetic factors, and that oxytocinmay be relevant to social support, according to recent studies, variation on specific genes related to oxytocin functioning im-pact overall marital quality, in par t.They are relevant to how partners provide and receive suppor tfrom each other. The study evaluated whether different geno-types - possible genetic combinations of the oxytocin receptorgene (OXTR)- influenced how spouses support one another, which is a key determinant of overall marital quality. OXTR wastargeted because it is related to the regulation and release ofoxytocin. “Genes matter when it comes to the quality of mar-riage, because genes are relevant to who we are as individuals, and characteristics of the individual can impact the marriage,”said Richard Mattson, Associate Professor from the BinghamtonUniversity in the US.For the study, the team included nearly 100 couples. Each par t-ner was asked individually to come up with an issue to discusssomething they identify as their most salient personal problemthat was not related to their partner or par tner’s family such asproblems at work.“We found that variation at two par ticular locations on OXTRimpacted the observed behaviours of both husbands and wives, and that differences in behaviour across couples had small butcumulative effects on overall evaluations of suppor t, and thusmarital quality in general,” added Mattson, published in the Jour-nal of Family Psychology. However, what emerged as most relevant to overall maritalquality for both partners was genotypic variation among hus-bands at a specific location on OXTR.Husbands with a particular genotype were less satisfied withthe support they were provided from their wives which sug-gested that it was also associated with being less satisfied withtheir marriage, noted Mattson. The researchers hope their findings provide the foundation forreplication and additional study of OXTR as an enduring deter-minant of marital functioning.

WHY MORTGAGE INSURANCE IS A MUST

Why the millennials in Bollywood need to be

left alone for fashion’s sake

The war is on and it won’t settle down soon. The war of style judgments, fashionopinion and social media restlessness. Who wore what? Who was spotted withwhom? Who repeated clothes and who has never repeated anything, wardrobewise. Who wore a knock-off and who celebrated an original? The biggest victimsseem to be the millennials in Bollywood who have just discovered the tumultuouscharm of being in the industry and how everyday is a lot to take. The feeling of beingleft behind, not creating enough buzz on social media, being defined and labelled byfashion veterans and most importantly, dealing with the trolls.Over the years, the iconic emblems that have emerged over a period of time, be ita classic style, or an everlasting edge, provocative charm or shying facade, thenames we swear by were given time to discover who they are on and off thecamera and they ended up defining the most significant trends that we still are inlove with and recreating them from time to time is always on our to-do-list. Thenew brigade of actors like Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Pandey amongothers have shown a confident side and they know what they are up for as well andthat clearly leads to how they want to be seen and shown. Sara is loved in her whitechuridars as well as her choice of colours whereas Janhvi is a designer’s delightas she seems to be very comfortable with complex designer wear and subtlety isnot for her. Ananya Pandey is easy and casual and the girl next door image isbuilding up. But what seems to be an important question is that have they hadenough time to figure their original sense of style? Who they really are and how they

are projected by designer labels and of course, the constant comparison with theirpeers? The branched influence is massive and even before we got to connect withthe persona of these young faces, we have a pre-conceived notion of how theyshould be looking and what they should be wearing. A designer’s muse, a socialmedia star, a trendsetter, a beauty icon, all such labels are being given too early andthe time is clearly running out to even understand that it shouldn’t be that way.Every generation feels that they represent a newness amid prevalent tends andthey are doing a great job. To each his own but the idea of authenticity still remainsa vague territory. The style campaigners, the time-honoured role models in theindustry intentionally or unintentionally shorten the evolution of style and adeeper understanding of it. Now, let’s talk about fitness and beauty. Fit-ness and beauty have undergone tremendous changes and they havecome close to being a state of mind, a way of life. Anti-fit and size zerocan survive together but the immense pressures of the gym effect andthe number of hours put into the journey of “rediscovering” oneself isagain, indistinct. As far as the notion of beauty is concerned, one trendcomes and it somehow makes way into each and everyone’s regime. Why so much surrender? One does not need to look and be like everything else around. Accidental icons arefun but not everlasting. It’s a wait and watch situation and for everything else aswell, there is time!

DREAMING ABOUT A KEY

If the drop in temperatures and the cool wind has beenmaking your skin itchy and uncomfor table, help is at hand. Before going crazy shopping in the skincare aisle, experts tell AfterHrs how simple changes in one’s daily bathing and moisturisingroutine can make a difference.DR HARSHNA BIJLANI, MEDICAL HEAD — THE AGELESS CLINIC &CELEBRITY SKIN EXPERTOften even people who have oily or combination facial skin tend to getwhite flaky patches on their body. This is common in winter when thehumidity and temperatures drop. Those with oily or combination skin, may tend to get dry flaky skin as they continue using the same prod-ucts that are meant to control oil production even in winter, withoutrealising that the skin is producing less oil. Hot showers tend to openthe pores and reduce the level of natural oils from the top layer of yourskin, leaving it dry and more susceptible to adverse environmentalfactors. Aggressively rubbing your skin with a towel to dry off is notgood for your skin either. Make sure you use a fresh towel regularly toprevent bacteria growth on your old damp towels and use a soft terrycotton towel or antimicrobial cloth if your skin is easily irritated. Post-shower, moisturise immediately because your skin is sof ter andpores are open, this is the best time to allow your pores to take in asmuch moisture as they can.DR HARSHAD MALVE, HEAD MEDICAL, CETAPHILPeople tend to get white flaky skin due to a lack of moisture. Especiallyduring winters, the drop in temperature wipes off the moisture off theskin, while the dry wind causes white flakes to appear. Low humiditylevels make it an ongoing challenge for the skin to retain its ownhydration. Using harsh products also takes the moisture out. It isimperative to consult your dermatologist/ cosmetologist for recom-mended skincare routines that suit your skin type. Before steppinginto the shower, go for a quick scrub. Opt for a creamy formula and usea soft-bristled brush to slough away dead skin cells. A mild, soap-freeformula that removes dirt and impurities is a good bet. After scrub-bing, apply a moisturiser. Those containing macadamia nut oil help inmaintaining the optimal moisture balance that your skin needs. One ofthe most important ingredients to look for in body lotions is humec-tants, that helps draw the moisture from the air.

SUFFERING FROM DRY,ITCHY SKIN ON YOUR BODY?

As per records from the Bankof Canada, household debt onCanadians amounts to more

than $2.17 trillion. interestingly, mostof this debt is residential mortgage.Home is one of the biggest assetsone may own. One would go tolengths to protect it. But, is there away to ensure that this prizedpossession is always secure and thatyour loved ones always have a roofabove their heads, especially ifsomething was to happen to you? There cer tainly is, and we are goingto talk about it.One can get mor tgage insurancefrom an insurance company or froma financial institution along with thelife insurance or critical illnessinsurance. Most mortgage insurance policiesare designed to pay out the fullamount of your original mor tgage, nomatter how much you owe. Mor tgageprotectionMor tgage protection, however, offersa mix of insurance policies to protectyou:? Term life insurance: Itoffers life cover for a set period (10,15, 20 or 30 years). It can work if youwant low-cost insurance to begin withbecause the premium is usually lowfor the first term (especially whenyou are young, the cost increasesupon renewal for the next term. So,buying coverage for a term thatmatches your mor tgage term is a

great idea.? Permanent life insurance:It is usually more expensive thanterm insurance, however, the coveris fort life and the cost thereaf terremains fixed irrespective of yourgrowing age or worse off health.? Critical illness insurance:It allows you a one-time payment. Incase you are detected to be sufferingfrom a serious illness that has beencovered by the policy, it is paid off. This money can be used to pay formedical expenses, to pay off themor tgage or any other liability thatyou may have. How Are Mortgage Insurance,Mortgage Protection and LifeInsurance Different? In the case of mortgage insurance, the claimed payment goes to thelender. As your mor tgage balancedeclines, the coverage amount alsodeclines

In the case of mortgage protection, itis the critical illness insurance thatgrants you a one-time paymentwhich can be put to a use that youdeem best: paying off your mor tgageor any other expenses that you needto pay off.In case of your death, life insurancewill pay a tax-free amount to yourbeneficiary. This payment isenough to cover more than justmortgage. That way your survivorscan use the money for otherliabilities as well. Here are three aspects in whichthese three are different:BeneficiaryMor tgage insurance gives themoney to the lender and not theinsured. When critical i l lnessinsurance pays, the recipient isyou, the insured. In the case of lifeinsurance, the payment against theclaim is made to the beneficiary.

PortabilityIn case you end up changingmor tgage lender, the mortgageinsurance will not move with you bydefault. You will need to prove yourhealth is still fine and you will berequired to pay mortgage interest rateat whatever the new provider offers. With critical illness as well as lifeinsurance, changing the mor tgageprovider doesn't make a difference.Your policy still remains the sameand you do not need to re-apply oreven prove that your health is fine soas to be insured.FlexibilityWhen you buy mortgage insurancefrom a lender, there is no scope forchanging the coverage as yourrequirements change over time.Never theless, with mortgageprotection, you can easily conver tterm life insurance and term criticalillness insurance to permanent plans.

Is this the hottest skin care ingredient?

While there has been much debate about its medical uses, there isa steady increase in the use of Cannabis in beauty products acrossthe globe. Cannabidiols or CBD, which is a component derived fromCannabis (that won’t get you high), is becoming a popular choicefor skin care with promises of reducing fine lines, preventingpimples, and rescuing dry skin. Recently, Milk Make-up launched aCBD-infused mascara and brow tint, Malin + Goetz has a hand andbody wash with this compound, Origins offers a relaxing andhydrating face mask containing this oil, while Myaderm has used itin their blemish control product.Seed oil is beneficialGenerally known for all the wrong reasons, Cannabis is beingincreasingly used as a key ingredient in skin care products. CBD isused in cosmetics as this par t of cannabis is free of tetrahydrocan-nabinol (THC), which is considered hallucinogenic, explains DrBatul Patel, Medical Director and Dermatologist, The Bombay SkinClinic. “Cannabis seed oil is obtained by cold processing theseeds. This contains polyphenols and antioxidants, but is not a verystable oil. It needs to be mixed with other oils. It can be used withkiwi or rosehip oil to help balance sebum production and it can beadded with coconut oil for the hair,” she says.Could help with acne issuesCBD is preferred because of its many anti-inflammatory and pain

relieving proper ties. “This is said to be beneficial for people withacne, rosacea, eczema and for anti-ageing. I would advise the useof cannabis extract in skin care for those with breakouts and dryskin issues. But first, try a test patch on the face, below thejawline and wait for 48 hours so you know you are not allergic toany of the ingredients,” advises Dr Shuba Dharmana, Dermatolo-gist, Lejeune Medspa. While the feedback from users is good, shefeels there is no actual clinical evidence to say it is definitelybeneficial. “It is not harmful and laboratory studies have showngood results, but scientific evidence for its effects on people is notdocumented yet,” she adds.Relieves signs of itchingCannabinoids have promising antipruritic effects. Hence, it workswell in many dermatological conditions where itching is the mainsymptom. It also works on the erythema on skin so can be used ineczemas as well. Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, ConsultantDermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic & La Piel says these products suitIndian skin types. “They help regulate the life cycle of skin cells fora more radiant, youthful skin. CBD normalises oil production in dryskin patients and behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent inacne and sebor rheic dermatitis. It should, however, be avoided inpatients with respiratory disorders and severe hear t conditions,”she adds.

Relationship virgins: a newreality for millennials?

American social psychologist and author, Bella DePaulo hasnoted that people, who make it to their 20s and beyond withoutever having a relationship are often stigmatised with a view thatthey are “less happy, less well-adjusted, and lonelier than adultsof the same age, who did have romantic relationship experi-ence.” While some would balk at the stereotype, the fact is thisbelief often dictates the way people interact with one another. While generations have been trying to break away from thesenotions for ages, millennials may just succeed where no one hasbefore. Here’s how.Throwing the rulebook out of the windowGen Z especially in the West are not conformists, making theirown dating/relationship rules rather than playing by the old ones. It’s this complete disregard for the old relationship rulebook thatgives millennials a chance to not only test the waters, but alsochannel the way it ebbs and flows to suit their idea of what arelationship should be. Parental and peer pressure, cruel datingtrends and the relentless pursuit of finding that ‘someone special’has further created an atmosphere where a number of millennialsare choosing to be relationship virgins. The single v/s in-a-relationship campThis decision to stay away from the complications of being at-tached brings other issues and stereotypes to the fore.Especially, the other ’s view that comes to the forefront. Couplesoften end up judging singles, bracketing them as a group of peoplewho are less happy and lonely. It’s clearly a stereotype, with nobasis in reality. Clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany breaksit down for you. She shares, “Singles in our country are notallowed or given space to think with a broader perspective. Whileit’s a pleasant feeling to date someone, it’s not a base measure ofpeople’s happiness. Many people who date, sometimes haveexaggerated notions of relationships. They look at singles withsympathy, not realising that most single people live life construc-tively and are happy and satisfied not obsessing over their rela-tionship status.” And while singles are aware of this other lens, through which they are observed and judged, many try not to letit affect them. However, that does not mean the pressures andexpectations do not get to them. How Gen Z in India is navigating relations?Psychiatrist Dr Hemant Mittal believes that given the relation-ship dynamics here, millennials in India have a different set ofproblems than their counterparts in the West. He says, “Indianmillennials are still under a lot of pressure to have an indepen-dent lifestyle, but at the same time the social system here, doesn’tgive them much scope to live life on their own terms. Long-termcommitted relationships have taken a backseat. And in five yearsthe effects will be seen mostly in urban areas. Collective com-munity oneness is still developing in India. The Indian youth isstill battling for their basics. So, while a section of them maybechoosing to be relationship virgins, others let society influencetheir choices when it comes to their relationship status.”

Teasing your par tner playfully leads to long lasting relationshipsAre you always in a mood to tease your better half? Then there isgood news. A new study suggests that couples who poke fun ateach other, indicating humour, are more likely to stay together. The study showed that inside jokes are par ticularly impor tant be-cause they affirm ones relationship through laughter, the DailyMail repor ted. However, couples who share mean-spirited jokeswith nasty jibes are unlikely to last, which indicates a problem inthe relationship.“Playfulness between romantic par tners is a crucial component inbonding and establishing relational security,” said Jeffrey Hall,Associate Professor from the University of Kansas in the US.“Par ticularly shared laughter is an impor tant indicator of romanticattraction between potential mates,” Hall added. The team examined more than 150,000 par ticipants to determine how impor tant humour is in a romantic relationship. The results, published in the journal Personal Relationships, suggest that couples who create humour together - including inside jokes - are morelikely to last. But, this does not mean that people who are funny or can make a joke out of anything would be more lucky in love.“If you share a sense of what’s funny, it affirms you and affirms your relationship through laughter,” Hall was quoted as saying by DailyMail. However, couples should not go too far, Hall warned. Impor tantly, having an aggressive sense of humour is a bad sign for therelationship in general, but it is worse if this style of humour is used in the relationship, the study noted.

Social media may be ruining your relationships, making you drained and distracted

Researchers found that even minor phone use during a meal with friends was enough to makethe diners feel distracted and reduced their enjoyment of the experience

With the advent of technology, ourdigital lives may be making usmore distracted, drained and dis-tracted. In a new experiment, re-searchers found that even minorphone use during a meal withfriends was enough to make thediners feel distracted and reducedtheir enjoyment of the experience.Lead author of the study RyanDwyer, said, “People who wereallowed to use their phones dur-ing dinner had more trouble stay-

ing present in the moment. Mod-ern technology may be wonder-ful, but it can easily sidetrack usand take away from the specialmoments we have with friendsand family in person.”Dwyer and his colleagues con-ducted two studies — a field ex-periment in a restaurant and asurvey. Par ticipants were eitherasked to keep their phones on thetable with the ringer or vibrationon or to put their phones on silent

and place them in a container onthe table during the meal. After eating, the par ticipants filledout a questionnaire detailing theirfeelings of social connectedness, enjoyment, distraction and bore-dom, as well as the amount ofphone use and what they did on theirphones during the meal. The research-ers found that people who had theirphones easily accessible during theexperiment not only used them morethan those with their phones put away,

but they also reported feeling more dis-tracted and enjoyed the experience less.Par ticipants were surveyed five timesa day for one week and were asked toreport on how they were feeling andwhat they had been doing in the 15 min-utes before completing the survey. Re-sults showed that people reported feel-ing more distracted during face-to-faceinteractions if they had used theirsmar tphone compared with face-to-face interactions where they hadnot used their smar tphone. The stu-dents also said they felt less en-joyment and interest in their inter-action if they had been on theirphone.Co-author of the study, ElizabethDunn said, “The survey findingswere especially notable becauseof the negative effects of phone useamong university students, whoare commonly known as digital na-tives. We assumed that this gen-eration would be more adept atmulti-tasking between using theirphones and interacting with others, but we found out even moderatelevels of phone use undermined thebenefits of engaging with others,”added Dunn.

CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTICLEUKEMIA PATIENTS ATHIGHER RISK OF MELANOMAPatients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) have a siz-able 600% higher risk of melanoma, the most dangerous form ofskin cancer, a Wilmot Cancer Institute scientific team found out.Although a higher risk of melanoma had been known, a full analysisof detection rates and treatments among CLL patients has neverbeen reported before, said Clive Zent, Managing Director, who ledthe Wilmot Cancer Institute scientific team.As a result of this new data, Zent, an international exper t in CLL,recommends that all clinical teams who care for CLL patients shouldactively monitor for melanoma as a par t of routine care. The goal isto catch the skin cancer early and manage it with the newest targetedtherapies.“We do not for sure know why CLL patients are more susceptible tomelanoma, but the most likely cause is a suppressed immune sys-tem,” said Zent, a professor of Hematology and Oncology and Medi-cine at the University of Rochester Medical Cancer and Wilmot.“Normally, in people with healthy immune systems, malignant skincells might be detected and destroyed before they become a prob-lem. But in CLL patients, failure of this control system increases therate at which cancer cells can grow into tumors, and also the likeli-hood that they will become invasive or spread to distant sites.”Study results showed that 22 melanomas were diagnosed among470 people in the cohor t, a rate that’s more than 600% higher thanwhat would be expected in a similar group of age- and gender-matchedpeople from the general population. PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM MENTAL HEALTHPROBLEMS TEND TO FOCUS ON NEGATIVES

A new study has revealed thatmany patients with neuropsychi-atric disorders focus on the pos-sible downside of a given situa-tion more than the potential ben-efit. Neuropsychiatric disorderssuch as anxiety or depression aretypically attributed to diseasesthat originate from the nervoussystem.Researchers at MassachusettsInstitute of Technology pinpointeda brain region that can generatethis type of pessimistic mood. In

tests in animals, they showed thatstimulating this region, known asthe caudate nucleus, inducedthem to make more negative de-cis ions. They gave far moreweight to the anticipated draw-back of a situation than its ben-efit, compared to when the regionwas not stimulated. This pessi-mistic decision-making couldcontinue through the day after theoriginal stimulation. These types of decisions, whichrequire weighing options with

both positive and negative ele-ments, tend to provoke a greatdeal of anxiety. The study alsoshowed that chronic stress dra-matically affects this kind of de-cision-making: More stress usu-ally leads to choosing high-risk,high-payoff options. In the new study, the researcherswanted to see if they could reproducean effect that is often seen in peoplewith depression, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. These patientstend to engage in ritualistic behaviours

designed to combat negative thoughtsand to place more weight on the poten-tial negative outcome of a given situa-tion. This kind of negative thinking, theresearchers suspected, could influenceapproach-avoidance decision-making.To test this hypothesis, the researchersstimulated the caudate nucleus, a brainregion linked to emotional decision-making, with a small electricalcurrent as animals were offereda reward (juice) paired with anunpleasant stimulus (a puff of airto the face).

Hyper tension drug showspromise in liver disease

A drug used to lower blood pressure within a system ofveins and inflammation could effectively treat a potentiallylife-threatening condition of the liver, say researchers, in-cluding one of the Indian origin. The study on mice showed that the drug sivelestat maylower por tal hyper tension - associated with cirr hosis andother chronic liver diseases - thereby improving symp-toms and its outcomes.Por tal hyper tension is a condition where there is an in-crease in pressure within the por tal vein that carries bloodfrom abdominal organs to the liver. While there are therapies to treat some forms of liver dis-eases, including hepatitis C and autoimmune hepatitis, options have been limited for treating por tal hyper tension.“Sivelestat has been safely used in humans with acutelung injury and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This sug-gests sivelestat and similar drugs constitute a potentialmeans to decrease por tal hyper tension in patients withchronic liver disease,” said Vijay Shah, gastroenterologistat Mayo Clinic in the US.The study, published in the journal Gastroenterology, showed deposits of a blood clot-causing protein contrib-uted to por tal hyper tension.Fibrin was formation by inflammatory cells known as neu-trophils, which when slowed by sivelestat were able todecrease por tal hypertension.“The study paves the way for developing new drugs andrepurposing of existing compounds to target inflammationin the liver driven by disease-related mechanical forces,”said Moira Hilscher, researcher at the varsity.Although the study was obtained from mouse models, itwas also confirmed in liver samples from humans.
