RULES FOR DECLAMATION
I. The speech must be original, and must not have been previously
delivered in public in any national or local event.
II. Each institute may send one declamation team comprising of 3
speakers—neither more nor less.
III. Speakers may compete in any three of the following four categories:
i. English (Serious)
ii. Urdu (Serious)
iii. English (Humorous)
iv. Urdu (Humorous)
IV. Paper reading is highly discouraged. Carrying written cues in any form
will lead to a strict penalty.
V. Judging criteria for Declamation include:
i. Content;

ii. Style;
iii. Pronunciation;
iv. Confidence;
v. Gestures.
vi. Humorous (if applicable)
VI. Each contestant will be awarded points out of 50, with 10 points
allocated per criterion. (Out of 60 in case of a humorous speech.)
VII. Speeches must be of at least 3 minutes but not more than 5 minutes
in duration. The first bell will ring after the third minute, followed by a
second bell after the fifth minute.
VIII. Any contestant delivering a speech longer than 6 minutes will be
disqualified.
IX. Speakers who use obscene or vulgar language will be disqualified
and the concerned authorities at the speaker’s institute will be notified
of this behavior.
X. Usage of props or other items to demonstrate a viewpoint at any point
during a speech is strictly prohibited.
XI. Discrimination against any race, religion, sex, caste or group will lead to
disqualification.
XII. A contestant who presents irrelevant material will be sent back from the
podium immediately.

XIII. Any gestures made must within the context of the speech; shouting or a
very high pitch is not allowed.
XIV. Team victory will depend on the sum of the points earned by all the
speakers in that team.
XV. Teams need not bring along a chaperone, faculty member or other
individual solely in a supervisory role; however, they must select a
Team Leader from within themselves who must contact the FMHC
Debating Society and provide the information required as per Clause V
of the section on Participation as stated in the Terms & Conditions.
