April/May 2019 Arizona Roundup Newsletter President’s Letter Dick Hauptmann The club’s rallies for 2019 have been a great success. We’ve completed 100% booked rallies at Lost Dutchman State Park, Wickenburg Community Center, Catalina (Tucson) State Park, Lake Powell and on June 6-9, Sedona. The Club has been adding new members and we’ve been happy to welcome some of those members to their first rally this year. We’ll be taking a break for the summer as many of our local members head out with their Airstreams for adventures with Airstream Caravans and personal travels. Meanwhile, most of our affiliate members have already left for the summer to their home location. The Fall will bring us a rally in Camp Verde at Distant Drums RV Park with a train trip on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The last Rally in November is at Lake Pleasant Regional Park for the only dry camping opportunity of the year. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual Holiday Luncheon and Officer Installation on Saturday, December 7th 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Rustler’s Rooste in Tempe. Later this summer you’ll receive an email for online registration and payment for these three events. Thanks to the work of our Treasurer, Jerry Nelson, the online registration and payment system went live for the Lake Powell rally and was a big success. I think all who book for the last three events of the year will enjoy how simple and straightforward the process has become. One of the advantages of the new system is that it has eased the work burden of the club’s officers, committee heads and rally hosts ! If you think you could help us out in 2020 as a host, committee member or officer please drop me a line. Have a great summer and happy Airstreaming to everyone. Dick 480.524.7906

Catalina State Park Rally - March 28-31, 2019 Nancy Fisher

The weather was delightful! However, Thursday’s gathering found us out in the sun, with little shade to be had on what turned out to be the warmest day. We had a great variety of items to share at the happy hour/pot luck combo. We all introduced ourselves and were happy to see such a variety of attendees from well seasoned 50+ year members of WBCCI to several that were on their first rally. We appreciate our older members for their memories of all the fun times they have had on rallies, caravans, and trips to International rallies. New members can enjoy these same benefits and have a lifetime of the same thanks to the Airstream club. Our group is very welcoming and rarely do you see the same members staying to themselves. We all enjoy meeting and getting to know new members or members from other units.

On Friday it was another beautiful day starting off with a healthy breakfast provided by Stephanie Brown. Co-hosts Bob and Val Edwards provided coffee and other beverages. Everyone enjoyed their fresh yogurt and berries along with homemade banana nut raisin donuts. After a slight change in elevation we were higher and cooler at Oracle State Park, approximately 35 minutes from Catalina State Park, our home base for the rally. The Kannally Ranch house, which is a mystery to most, was explained in great detail by our ranger Jennifer. She has been with the park many years, and even though most of the family records were destroyed she was able to share the beautiful and unique home’s story with us. Afterward most attended the lunch at Oracle Inn. You could tell by the many conversations around the tables that we were delighted to be together and have the opportunity to share our love of travel and all things airstream. The day was complete with another happy hour that lasted until dark. Saturday morning was a time to relax after a breakfast of bagels, cream cheese and juices with a bit more yogurt and fruit provided by Annie Hauptmann. Many visited the nearby Farmers Market and Art Festival. In the afternoon we met at the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun and after some confusion about an entrance fee and a sick docent they helped us make the best of it. Their employees gave us a tour of the gallery and grounds. We all learned more about this very interesting and eclectic artist that was so much a part of Tucson and the Southwest. At 5 P.M. we met again for a dinner at El Corral, a long time hometown favorite of locals and visitors to the Tucson area. Again, the hum of conversations told me that a lot of good times were being shared and no one was left out of the good times happening amongst our diverse group. The restaurant took good care of us and there was no rush to leave as conversations lingered into the early evening. Where did the time go? Before we knew it we were meeting for a goodbye breakfast of Danishes and coffee. Saying our goodbyes to friends old and new, and heading off in the many directions that brought us together all those days ago. I hope everyone enjoyed the rally as much as Jim and I did. Please consider hosting or co-hosting a future event. It can be as simple or complex as you like. Showing off our wonderful state and all it has to offer is so easy as there is something to do nearby at all rally sites and we all just enjoy time together. Please help out and consider a future rally site to host. Our thanks to our Co-hosts for helping in the mornings and just knowing we had someone else to help out is always comforting. Safe travels everyone! Your Co-hosts, Nancy Fisher and Jim Hicks

Another Perspective on the Catalina State Park Rally Judy Vergalla

Thank you to the Edwards and Fisher/Hicks who were the hosts for the March rally held at Catalina State Park in Tucson, AZ. A good size group of twenty-five rigs and 49 people attended. There were large paved campsites. We met for breakfasts and Happy Hours in a clear area, and tables were set up there. Stephanie Brown provided breakfast, which included homemade donuts and yogurt with fruit. It was the first time many of us tasted homemade yogurt, which was, for me, the best yogurt I’ve ever eaten! Yum! Friday we went to Oracle State Park for a tour of the Kannally Homestead, which was an informative tour of the Kannally home. From the outside the home appeared very, very tiny. Surprisingly, the home was filled with many levels complete with secret doors, and semi circular stairs that made for an interesting maneuver for a group our size. After our tour we went to the Oracle Inn and had diverse choices for a wonderful lunch. On Saturday, we had some free time in the morning to do whatever we wanted. There was an Arts and Crafts show a very short distance away in the Marketplace, as well as a Farmer’s Market. The state park boasts many places to hike and ride horses, which some enjoyed. In the afternoon, many opted to go to the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun. It’s a museum and gardens dedicated to Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, an American artist, born June 14, 1909. He was an American impressionist, painter, sculptor, composer, actor, director, designer, architect, jeweler, and lithographer who died September 17, 1982. In the evening we went to El Corral, a steakhouse nearby the De Grazia Gallery. It was a great rally, at a wonderful state park, nearby shopping and not far from a variety of things to do. Thanks again to Nancy who planned the tours and dinners, the Edwards who provided coffee and beverages and thanks to Stephanie Brown for the breakfasts. Thanks to Dick Hauptmann for finding this gorgeous state park, his wife Annie, who was there to help with the essentials and making sure things “got done”. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this rally the success it was!

Lake Powell Rally – Page, AZ May 16th – May 19th, 2019 Cheryl Carmichael

Rick and I ended our 15 day tour of the Southeastern Utah National and State Parks by joining the Arizona Airstream Club for 3 days on the south shore of Lake Powell in Page. Our excursions included a Glen Canyon Dam tour, Ken’s Lower Antelope Canyon tour, and many from the group walked the 1.5 mile hike to view the Horseshoe Bend overlook. We enjoyed the hike with our old friend Natalie Price and our new friend Terilyn Krueger. One of my favorite pictures is of Dick and Annie Hauptmann with Bob and Mary Lou Doster at Antelope Canyon. The wind on those three days, reminded me of my childhood in Wyoming. I had to wear my bandana to keep my hair tamed! The group still met at a campsite table/area for breakfasts, a social happy hour (sharing our adventures and pictures of the day) and enjoying a community dinner. Other new members who joined the rally were Brian and Reed (son) Shniderman and Richard and Cheryl Baldwin. Yes there was a full moon! For those who have not been to Southeast Utah, the area is breathtaking. I encourage others to visit the parks along our drive – Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, and Glen Canyon. If you have more time Bryce, Zion, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon are a short drive from Page, Arizona.

Talent Search

Dick Hauptmann Another reminder that the club is looking for a couple of people with some special talents. Our Newsletter editor, Daniella Hauptmann, will be finishing up two years of wonderful work at the end of this year. We are starting an early search for someone who has experience in putting together a newsletter and either creating it in Word as she does now or creating it in something fancier like Adobe. This can be a two person position. One person to put the newsletter together and another person to format it and make it look pretty. Putting the newsletter together does NOT mean you write it all. We gather articles from our members and Daniella puts it all together. If you think you are good for either of these jobs please let me know. Next year our Website will need some help . It is currently outsourced at minimal cost due to relationships but we need to transition by 2020. We hope to find someone within the Club with recent web design/hosting experience that can analyze our current status and move us to a permanent minimal cost, long-term solution. If you think you can contribute please contact me. Dick Hauptmann 480.524.7906 [email protected]
