Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

It is amazing that each day brings new realities into our lives due to this Coronavirus. Let us continue to pray for all of us impacted, for calmness to our anxieties in the midst of uncertainties, as well as that our leaders may work for what is the good of all. Let us pray for all families, especially those with children and parents having to make arrangements since the schools are closed. Let us pray for those are being laid off, losing a job and whose finances are being impacted. Let us pray for all the additional stress and tensions that are aris-ing. Let us pray for a quicker resolution to this health chal-lenge and a return to more normalcy.

Last Sunday, we were able to livestream the 11 am Mass. My goal was to offer Mass as best as we could, as “normal” as we do here every weekend, even though there was no as-sembly present physically. Overall, it went well. Was it per-fect? No, but we will do our best, if possible, to improve on any shortcomings. Most parishes, including us, do not have sophisticated equipment, nor are we experts with advanced degrees in livestreaming. We are learning. Even if we are able to improve on quality, our livestreaming will never match what major news stations are able to do since we simp-ly do not have such high quality equipment. I am most proud of our staff members who are working so hard to learn and accomplish this task.

From the emails received, it seemed most people were so pleased to be connected to our parish and the Mass. I even had one person who has moved to another city contact me. She emailed me stating that she had 2 options to watch Mass: either from her cathedral in her new home diocese or here at the Co-Cathedral. She watched our Mass and commented how much she misses the Co-Cathedral and the members.

We received only a few comments that expressed disap-pointment with some shortcomings in quality. In my opinion, these few people unfortunately expect perfection, never thinking how much of a challenge it is to learn and imple-ment livestreaming so quickly when it is so new to us. Yet these same people are imperfect in some things they do.

Message from the Pastor p. 3

We were privileged to have Joe McClane, the Director of Mission Development for Guadalupe Radio Network, assist-ing us last Sunday with livestreaming. Guadulupe Radio is our local Catholic radio station, KSHJ on 1430 AM radio. Say a prayer of thanksgiving for Joe McClane who so gra-ciously assisted us and for this radio station. But this week, we will be utilizing one or more parishioners who have some knowledge in this area, as well as our staff members.

See p. 4 and the outside cover for our newly, updated church hours & Confession times. The Cardinal has asked every parish to the best of their ability to have the churches open during the day to allow you to come and pray, especial-ly before the Blessed Sacrament. Since our church was open so many hours previously, we reduced our hours. It did not make sense on Sundays to have the church open 15 hours as when we had all 6 Sunday Masses.

I ask you to come to confessions as soon as possible. We still have confessions everyday (unless more restrictions are imposed). I envision we will not have confessions available on Good Friday as we have had in past years.

Concerning scheduled Mass intentions: Since all public Masses have been suspended, naturally all those Mass inten-tions will have to be re-scheduled somehow. Please be pa-tient with us. We do not have all the answers yet on when and how they will be re-scheduled.

Bishops and pastors have the privilege and responsibility to offer one Mass for the sole intention of praying for one’s members of the diocese / parishioners every Sunday and eve-ry other holy day of obligation. This is called a “Missa pro populo,” Latin “for the People of the Parish.” The pastor is to offer this Mass himself, or if necessary to have the parochial vicar or a visiting priest to offer it (Canons 388 & 534). This privilege and responsibility is the same one you as a parent has—to pray for your child(ren). As a result, every Sunday 11 am Mass will have the intention of praying for you, the parishioners of our parish, the Co-Cathedral.

I realize almost everyone is anxious about finances & job security. Just as you are anxious perhaps about how to pay your bills, so too every parish, including us, is wondering how to pay our bills. We invite you to contribute as well as you can. Please see p. 5 on “5 Ways to Contribute.”

Pope’s Prayer Intention: Catholics in China We pray that the Church in China may persevere in its faithfulness to the Gospel and grow in unity.

What about receiving Holy Communion? Make an Act of Spiritual Communion!

It has long been a Catholic understanding that when cir-cumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshiping Him in His Body and Blood. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Commun-ion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily. When un-able to receive Holy Communion, pray the prayer below:

A prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into

my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be

separated from you. Amen.

Fifth Sunday of Lent: March 29

That we open our hearts to see God’s active presence in our daily lives.

“Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you be-lieve you will see the glory of God?” John 11:40

Many of us say that we believe in God. We go to church on Sunday. We volunteer for events at our parish. But when life gets hard, the pressure is on, when things aren’t going our way, do we really be-lieve, do we really put our trust in the Lord? When we live a life of gratitude, being thankful for the gifts we have been given, we really do see that God is providing all that we need. It opens our hearts to see God’s active presence in our daily lives.

Jesús Resucita a Lázaro

Create a Family Prayer Space at Home In the coming weeks, families will be spending more time together at home. One good use of this time would be to praytogether on a regular basis. This prayer time together can be enhanced by creating a place in your home dedicated toprayer. Making a place for prayer in our home can help us do what the Gospel tells us, to go into an “inner room” to pray(Matthew 6:6). Make your prayer place as quiet, uncluttered, and “desert-like” as possible. It can be the corner of a room or any unused space. Furnish your prayer place with a Bible, prayer books, cross, rosary, icons, and a candle. En-courage family members to use the prayer place for personal as well as family prayer. You can bless your place of pray-er, saying:

Come, Holy God. Dwell in this place of prayer, and bless it with your peace and presence. Bless all who seek you here. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

If you are unable to go to Mass, one idea for prayer together is to find a resource with the prayers and reading for Sun-day Mass and pray those together. Your parish may have something you c n take home and use. You can find the findthe readings online at www.usccb.org. Copyright JS Paluch

Give Glory To God On the Fi h Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we proba-bly would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a cre-scendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in bap sm, we are also called, by our a tudes and ac ons, to give glory to God.

Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the following regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19)

With the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives and again we are reminded of our common humanity-that the peoples of the world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God.

God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this time of trial and testing. In this moment, it is im-portant for us to anchor our hearts in the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Now is the time to intensify our prayersand sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one another in our love for him, and rediscover the things that truly matter in our lives. United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers and sisters here and around the world who are sick. Let us pray for those who have lost loved ones to this virus. May God console them and grant them peace. We pray also for doctors, nurses, and caregivers, for public health officials and all civic leaders. May God grant them courage and prudence as they seek to respond to this emergency with compassion and in service to the common good. In this time of need, I invite all the faithful to seek together the maternal intersession of Our Lady of Guada-lupe, and I share this prayer with you.

Prayer Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,

Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,

as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother,

and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones,

the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance.

Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be

pa ent and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to

our hearts. We come to you with confidence,

knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protec on, keep us in the embrace of your arms,

help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
