Architectural metal wall panels, also referred to as sheet metal or panel

curtain walls, is a relatively new non-structural product used in building construction, they are low maintenance and recyclable. Its uses vary from an exterior skin to roofing material. The versatile nature of panels allow for artistic usage of the material as shown in the example below.

The metal is melted in a container called a crucible and then poured

into a rectangular mold and left to cool. Once the metal has cooled the metal is removed from the mold and dipped into a mixture of chemicals to be cleaned. After being cleaned the metal is than put through a press, this process is continued until the metal reaches its desired thickness.

Annealing

As the ingot is run through the press the metal will become increasingly harder. It may be necessary to anneal the metal several times throughout the rolling process. Annealing the metal consists of heating it up and then pickling it again. During the annealing process the metal is only made warm-it is not melted again.

The design and shape of the panels are left up to the digression of the

designer. These wall panel systems are engineered to support gravity, seismic and wind loading, and are typically screwed or bolted on a structural frame which often consists of metal studs. The joints of the panels MUST be tight enough so as not to allow water to pass through . The panels require little to no maintenance, however over time, dirt and pollutants will be deposited on metal panels. If the dirt is not removed periodically, pollutants may attack the panel coating system and cause pitting. Periodical cleaning and replacement of sealant is advised to be done every 7 – 20 years.

Architectural metal panel wall systems have a wide range of

applications and can be designed to achieve a wide range of architectural styles.

Their use is appropriate for construction in all climates and environments. The most common durable finishes applied on metal panels include flouropolymer, powder, and anodized coatings.

With the exception of flat plate metal systems, metal wall panel systems typically have low impact resistance; high-rise buildings, which require window washing or periodic maintenance, are usually fitted with impact resistant panels.

These panels with the exception of some insulated wall panels do not offer sound insulation, the design of the back-up wall is usually provides for sound insulation.

The sizes of the panels are customized based on the building site and

the architects design. Its thickness can range from 1/8”– 6” depending on whether the panels are insulated or not. Their length can be anywhere between 8’ and 53’, the width can range from 24”-42”.
