Review of Austr alia n Standa rds. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subjectto periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It isimportant therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and anyamendments thereto.

Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in t he Standards AustraliaCatalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine The Australian

Standard, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editionsand amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.

Suggestions for improvements t o Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards Australia, are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be madewithout delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 82150.

    PREFACE

This standard was prepared by the Associations Committee on Safety for DegreasingPlant at t he request of the Safety Standards Board, i n an endeavour to establish safetyrequirements for the safe use of vapour degreasing plant.

The standard sets out the safety measures to be implemented by suppliers andmanufacturers of vapour degreasing plant and prescribes requirements that ensure thesafety and health of personnel engaged in the operation of such plant. It includesappendices that set out a recommended method for the cleaning of degreasing plant, first aid procedures and the description of properties of solvents used in vapourdegreasing processes.

Persons who work with organic solvents may be exposed to hazards of airbornecontamination, e.g. toxicity, and to other hazards such as oxygen starvation, decom-position products, liquid splashing and others. Protective measures should therefore beadopted by operators to avoid exposure by ingestion, by skin absorption or byinhalation of vapours or liquids at a concentration greater than those provided for inhygiene standards for atmospheric contaminants.

The standard covers the following categories of vapour degreasing plant using organicsolvents:

    (a) Vapour degreasing.

    (b) Vapour degreasing wi th ultrasonic agitation.

The requirements set out in the standard may be considered for incorporation instatutory regulations.

This standard does not cover surface treatment processes or aqueous or alkalinedegreasing and cleaning operations.

1.4.1 Atmospheric contaminanta gas, vapour oraerosol, which is not a constituent of the normalatmosphere.

1.4.2 Condensatea liquid solvent resulting f romthe cooling of solvent vapour. It is the clean solventwhich forms on the condensing coils of a vapourdegreaser or still.

1.4.6 Drag-outsolvent which is carried out of avapour degreasing operation as a liquid trapped in oron the parts being processed.

1.4.7 Flashpointthe lowest temperatures at whichapplication of a small flame causes the vapour abovea flammable liquid to produce a momentary flashwhen it is heated under standardized conditions of

test laid down by an appropriate test method, as inAS 2106.
