AS Evaluation: Question 3What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and

why?

Page 2: AS Evaluation: Question 3

What is distribution? The movement of goods and services from the source through a distribution channel, right up to the final customer, consumer, or user, and the movement of payment in the opposite direction, right up to the original producer or supplier.

Relating more to the media and digital side of distribution is also called digital distribution. Digital distribution (also called content delivery, online distribution, or electronic software distribution (ESD), among others) is the delivery or distribution of media content such as audio, video, software and video games.

Examples of some distribution companies include.. 20th Century Fox Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Lucasfilm and Sony Pictures.

Our final media product:The type/genre of film that we have produced is a thriller which has been based around the existing real media product called ‘Shifty’. The distribution companies that worked with this film include:Breaking Glass Pictures (2012) (USA) (DVD)Cinemax (2011) (Hungary) (TV)Front Row Filmed Entertainment (2009) (United Arab Emirates) (all media) (Middle east)Metrodome Distribution (2009) (UK) (all media)Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

All of these distribution companies would be likely to be interested in our film of ‘Intoxicated’ because it has the same themes and genre conventions as ‘Shifty’ as this is the film that we have closely followed. I have decided to look closely at one particular distribution company (Breaking Glass Pictures) and some of the other films which they have been involved in and they include ‘All mistakes Buried’, ‘The Hours Til Daylight’ and ‘Semper Fight’. All of these films are thrillers and a lot of the films that this distribution company focus on buying are action based, exciting thrillers; because of these reasons i believe that this company would be interested in our film idea.

Is your film going to appeal to UK audiences only?

• Is your film going to appeal to UK audiences only? Or does it have a wider appeal? Why? Why not?

I think that our film will appeal to UK audiences for a few reasons. The location and setting of this film is set around a stereotypical British council estate and therefore British residents may be more inclined to watch this particular film. The characters which speak are also speaking in English and have a English look to them and therefore this again may attract English viewers.

However, I also believe that this film could also have a much wider appeal to other countries as the drug theme could be rated highly in other countries such as the United States or smaller drug capitals such as Brazil or Estonia. I also believe that people from around the world would be attracted to this film as they may want to see something other than their own country and culture

Possible marketing strategies, release strategies and exhibition options:

• Some thought about possible marketing strategies, release strategies and exhibition options. i.e. How and where would it be advertised? Where would your film be shown?

A few ideas that our final media product could be advertised could be in TV adverts, billboards, radio adverts etc. however because we only have a small budget we would not be able to provide large promotional methods and we would have to use adverts in local newspapers, local radio stations and could potentially have posters in the local area.

Social media could also be a big help to a small budget company as it does not cost money and the word can be spread quickly and easily. Our film could be shown in cinemas but it would not be able to be a big success straight away, again because of the small budget. We could also place it online so that people can pay to download the film. That way we would be able to make some money from the film.

Self distribution could also be a useful way to sell our film and make it available and known to the public and our particular target audience.

Every independant film should always remember that their film will not sell to a major distributor. Some small budget films do have potential to make money such as ‘Chuck and Buck’. If you accept this reality in pre-pro, and plan accordingly, you can even turn a profit.

If not, at least there is an audience out there ready for you. But along the way, there are some scams, wastes of time, and unfortunate experiences that you can hopefully avoid.

Self distribution
