MessageDear readers,

It is my great pleasure to share this booklet with you. It is a small recollectionof our first jointly organized training workshop with UNITAR CIFAL Jeju, JejuSpecial Self-Governing Province, and UNISDR, and also serves as a testamentto the greater impact that the event’s participants can achieve in their localgovernments, communities, and other fields of work.

With all your support and commitment, I am certain we can open moreopportunities to train local officials and other practitioners not only in disasterrisk reduction and climate change adaptation, but also in other areas ofgovernance.

May Asia-Pacific continue to push ahead!

Our five-day joint workshop held in Jeju Island in May, 2015, was a wonderfulevent for all participants from UCLG ASPAC members and the experts fromUNISDR, World Bank and Korean academia.

The Jeju workshop provided all participants with the opportunity to developvarious capacities on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction inour communities as well as the chance to participate in the Jeju Forum.

I wish the high spirit and momentum of the Jeju workshop be maintained in allfuture events of UCLG ASPAC.

The training workshop on "Developing Capacities in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in theAsia Pacific Region" was the first collaborative program between UCLG ASPAC and CIFAL Jeju. It combined lectures, group exercises, study visits and the development of action plans.

Using the tools of the UNISDR global campaign "Making Cities Resilient", participants learned how to use the LocalGovernment Self-Assessment Tool (LG-SAT) and simulated the development of a City Resilience Action Plan, bothguided by the MCR Campaign's 10-Point Checklist.

Without their help, I would nothave made it. Now, I don't have to hire experts or consultants because they have taught us how to doit....It [implementation] may take a long time, but certainly we can do it if we have the will." - Mayor Emiliana Villacarillo (Dolores, Philippines)
