1. Statement of intent

Write a description of the project you have been instructed to make.

The Statement of intent should be written as a series of paragraphs which lead from one another to

create a clear outline of the task objectives and parameters. Write a sentence on each of the

following questions.

The project I am making this term is

2. Research

Research can be any information which you do to help in the project. It can be printed material,

internet sites, conversations, visits, observation or testing

The image above is the standard version of the project.

These are the things I like:

These are the things I think would improve the design

3 Processes and techniques

It is important to learn, practice and apply the correct safety procedures to our practical work.

There are many new skills that you will need to evidence on this project.

Describe the set-up and safety precautions for the following

3. Design

There are three parts to effective designing.

a. Initial sketches

Quick thumbnail sketches of the first ideas

sketching furniture

b. Developed drawings

More detailed drawings showing how different parts of the idea can work

c. Final working drawings

A finished idea drawn showing the correct measurements and construction method

Developed drawing for a mobile phone

b. Developed idea

Select one idea from the three you have drawn. Using the grid, draw up an accurate sketch of the

final turning profile you would like to use.

c. Final working drawing

There are many ways of presenting your final idea. The most common methods are Isometric or

100mm

Making the frame

Task 1

This exercise will test your ability to measure, mark out and cut wood joints in timber. You are to produce the timber frame using the softwood provided. You are to evidence quality construction, finishing and safety standards at all times.

The tools and equipment you will need to complete this job are:

• Tenon saw • Steel rule and pencil • Bevel edge chisels • Marking gauge • Sliding bevel • Disc sander • Domino jointer • Thicknesser • Table router • Drop and slide saw • Morso guillotine • Marking knife • Battery drill

Safety test for the following pieces of equipment will need to be completed

• Thicknesser • Table Router • Drop and slide saw • Disc sander • Bandsaw

Evaluation and testing

This is the final section of the design folio.

The purpose here is to reflect upon how well the cabinet meets the needs of the intended user and

what you have learnt from the experience of making the Dressing mirror.

Write an evaluation using the following questions.

What aspects are you happy with?

What aspects could be improved on?

How well does the product fit your needs?

What skills have been learnt?

How did you maintain quality?

What feedback did you have from others?

Was the process sustainable, safe and efficient?
