On behalf of the Executive Board, Board of Directors, RabbiJ, and my family, we wish you a happy, healthy New Year,and a hearty welcome to our new members!

Have you been by the synagogue in the past few weeks?Well, let me tell you, our Ahavath Torah is lookingMarvelous…Yes, marvelous. The greenery surrounding thebuilding has been styled, the beds made; the weeds gone.Our ATC's "Garden To Be Named Someday" is clean andcrisp, with apples ripening to be picked for Sukkot.

When we began to discuss the High Holidays back in May,we assembled members for our NEW High Holiday Team.Members of Ritual, Buildings and Grounds, Communications,Yizkor Book, Rabbi J, Dan Bauman, and myself Zoomedweekly with the hope to make our observances unique andwanted all to leave the High Holidays "recharged andrefreshed" and "more serene and kinder"… from a distance.

These were, to be sure, beautiful goals. But after muchconsideration, it is clear that we cannot safely accomplishthese goals via our normal, in-person High Holiday servicesthis year. There is no way around the realization. Theinability to be together in shared prayer and celebration andcommunity is a profound loss.

And yet, moments of loss also provide opportunity forrebirth. We have spent the past several months planninghow to re-imagine the High Holidays at Ahavath Torah in ahybrid virtual world, creating an on-line experience, alongwith a small sanctuary presence of members.

Here is an update on the current plans. This is a quicksnapshot of our upcoming events, and certainly moreinformation will be provided to all. As a result of extensive

From the Rabbi’s DeskOn Rosh HaShanah, we read verses of sovereignty, memoryand music - the shofar blast. Each is a pastiche of biblicalverses that teaches lessons of psychology and soul.

Sovereignty is not only about G-d but also about us. Byemphasizing G-d's majesty, the verse reminds us that eachhuman being is frail and foolish, but still loved and unique.And, it recalls us to the reality that there are powerful ethicalexpectations for people in this world. We will fall short, ofcourse, but we are obligated to keep trying.

The verses of memory speak to the fear of beingforgotten. G-d is called "Zochair Kol Hanishkachot," theOne who remembers all things forgotten - including all ofus. It reinforces the majesty verses - we are ephemeral,but also eternal.

Finally, the verses of the shofar remind us of the rhythms ofour lives. This is the punctuation at the end and beginning ofthe year, recalling everything that has happened and all wedream for the year to come. The shofar stirs us like militarymusic, to straighten our spine and set us on the path to abetter life in the New Year.

This yuntif season will beunlike any that we all haveexperienced. Most willparticipate by way oflivestream and virtual efforts,safely ensconced in our homesso that we are not exposed nordo we expose others to thevirus dangers that lurk silently.However, it is vitally importantto reinforce that which werecite so often in the liturgy for this season - though life isfragile, we matter, life is meaningful and G-d does watchover us.

SelichotSeptember 12 at 9 PM (speaker). Recitation of Selichot at 10 PMIn conjunction with Temple B’nai Tikvah of Canton, by way of Zoom

Selichot are special prayers for forgiveness recited on fastdays and during the period preceding Yom Kippur. It isby way of the recitation of Selichot through and by whichwe begin to examine our actions of the past year, seekforgiveness from G-d and promise to improve our behaviorin the New Year. The prayers are specifically tailored tohelp us direct our hearts and minds to the process ofteshuvah (Hebrew for return or repentance).

Ashkenazi tradition holds that Selichot are recited from theSunday (often the Saturday night) before Rosh HaShanahuntil Yom Kippur unless Rosh HaShanah begins on aMonday or Tuesday (we would then begin to reciteSelichot the week before Rosh HaShanah as that must be aminimum of 3 days of Selichot before Rosh HaShanaharrives). Sephardic tradition begin reciting Selichot atRosh Hodesh Elul

The fundamental part of Selichot is the repeated recitationof the Thirteen Divine Attributes as described in Exodus34:6-7 following the Golden Calf apostasy. G-d's name is

said twice at the beginning of this section to remind us thatG-d is merciful before and after a person sins. Accordingto tradition, G-d taught these 13 attributes to Mosesdirectly as a way for the entire assembly to appeal to G-d'smercy and reassurance that repentance is always possible,along with the fact that G-d always awaits our return toHim. If we emulate G-d's merciful ways, G-d will treat usmercifully in return.

High Holiday Honors 5781To say the High Holidays services will be a little bitdifferent might be the biggest understatement of 5780.The way we do honors will also be quite different.

Those who have been given honors will be announcedbefore they happen in the service but except for the aliyotthey will be in name only. Those with aliyot will bepresent in the synagogue but all other honors will be doneby the Rabbi and the Hazzan.

We won't be calling you for carrying, lifting, or dressingthe Torah. We won't be calling you for readings or arkopenings. We will be assigning honors like we always do.We will be publishing the list of honors in the next coupleof weeks.

ATC Launches New Website

ATC launched a new website (www.atorah.org) in earlyAugust, publishing an attractive and easy-to-navigate sitethat is full of useful content for current members andpotential congregants.

"We hope our new website becomes a resource and yourpersonal calendar to the happenings each and every day atATC," President Bob Bornstein wrote in an email to thecongregation.

The new site will provide information on upcomingevents, ATC's community and groups, spiritual life, andholidays. It was designed by Rob Yunich, with the help ofEmily Prigot, Rabbi J, Bob Bornstein, and board members.

"I want to take a moment and give my personal thank youto Rob and Emily, who have both invested hundreds ofhours to develop our new site," Bornstein wrote. "The newATC website brings a new level of service to ourmembers, our event participants, and the community."

ATC's long-running website was most capably managedand maintained by David Steinberg for many years.

"We are grateful to David for the many, many hours hespent on it, and the fine work he did keep everyone up todate with it," Bornstein wrote.

Most of the new website is visible to everyone. The oneexception is labeled My Account, where you can viewyour billing information, manage your profile, update anyyahrzeit information, register for events, and makepayments or donations securely.

A brief online Rosh Hashanah evening service to beginthe holidays with Rabbi J and Hazzan Dan Bauman.

Our services will be live-streamed, none of whichindividually will last more than an hour and forty-fiveminutes.

A variety of age-appropriate experiences designed forfamilies with children.

If deemed safe, each service will host members withAliyot and Torah readings, and physical distancingrequirements will be enforced.

Planning for these holidays has come together through thetireless efforts of so many. A heartfelt thank you goes outto our leadership in helping us to re-imagine and provideservices for all. A special word of appreciation to LarryBarbell heading up the High Holiday Honors Team, andDavid Schulze, who is coordinating the logistical aspects ofthis plan and the technical and audio-visual work. Thissimply would not be possible without their wisdom, skill,and much dedication.

Throughout our history, the Jewish people have enduredmoments of crisis and deep sadness. And yet, despiteformidable challenges, we are known for our ability toendure, to adapt, and to thrive. We call upon the spirit ofour ancestors in forging a path toward renewal andrebirth, both personally and collectively. That is, after all,what the High Holidays are all about.

There will be a Rosh Hashanah Seder on Sunday evening,September 13th preceding Minyan. Our students will beparticipating. More details will follow.

Students will be attending Friday night KabbalatShabbat Services once a month as part of their ReligiousSchool experience.
