This presentation is on behalf of two International Research Alliances: at European scale (ATF) and at global scale (GRA/LRG). My name is Jonathan Levin, and i am affiliated to INRa where I coordinate the international cooperation in the domain of animal sciences. I am member of the general assemblee of both ATF and GRA Livestock Research Group. The chairs of the organizations: Harry Clark and Martin Scholten apologies not to attend the GASL meeting due to other obligations, but they highly appreciate the cooperation with GASL as a multistakeholder platform in the domain of sustainable livestock production. We consider ourselves as reseachers and scientists from one category of stakeholders, with a concerted action through the ATF and GRA; and want to contribute as a stakeholder, or better to say as an actor, to the “multiactor actions” that come out of GASL,


The Animal Task Force (since 2011)

• A European Public-Private Platform (PPP): research, farmers & industries

• Promoting a sustainable and competitive animal production sector in Europe;

• By fostering knowledge development and innovation in Europe; • Covering the whole animal production chain.

The Animal Task Force is set up in 2011, to promote sustainable and competitive animal production in Europe. We believe knowledge development and innovation is essential to bring this about. And, therefore, animal research should get more attention in the European Research and Innovation programmes. In 2011, several parties, among others Wageningen UR, INRA, Scottish Agricultural College and the European Technology Platform FABRE-TP, felt the need to join efforts to have one platform in Europe for the whole animal production chain that would unite research and industry and cover all different aspects in animal production. From feeding & breeding/genetics, to animal health and farming systems. This makes the Animal Task Force an research driven, but industry based organisation. The ATF is now in its third year of existence and we have grown to 16 members from research and industry [next slide]

Members in ITALICS are considering to become member. ATF consists of industry representative organsations from different parts of the animal production chain and major EU research providers. We aim to have every country represented in the ATF. At this moment our members come from 13 different EU countries, and counting. We aim to have all parts of the livestock production chain presented in the ATF.


What we do: Arrange dialogue on sector innovation with key stakeholders in Europe. (EC, Members of Parliament, industry organisations, NGOs, scientific community)

ATF published in 2013 a white paper with 3 key areas and 12 priority topics for R&D and innovation to foster a competitive and sustainable livestock production in Europe. This is a leading document in many SRIA’s in Europe and abroad. Including Horizon 2020.

ATF will soon published an addendum to that white paper with 12 actual priorities in the 3 key areas, as input for H2020 call 2016/17. it also is a guidance for the multi-actor innovations by farmers and their suppliers and buyers in the animal food chain under the umbrella of the new European Innovation Partnerships.
