• Review transcripts and test scores

• Register during your junior year in HS

• Costs $75 to register ($125 for internationals)

• SAT/ACT scores sent directly to the Eligibility Center

Determining Initial EligibilityAcademic Component:

1. Graduation;

2. Complete the minimum number of core courses;

3. Minimum core grade point average; and

4. ACT or SAT test score (sliding scale);

Amateurism Component:

5. Complete amateurism questionnaire


Step One

Division I Core-Course Requirements – 16 core courses needed:

• 4 years of English

• 3 years of math (Algebra I or Higher)

• 2 years of natural/physical science (one lab)

• 1 year of additional English, math or science

• 2 years of social science

• 4 years of additional core courses

*** Need to plan for this – not just graduate!


New Rule For Division I

Applies to Current HS Students (effective Aug 1, 2016 at Div. I schools)

10 Core courses prior to senior year;

7 of 10 must be in the following areas: • English

• Math (Algebra I or Higher)

• Natural/physical science (one lab)

** 10 core courses may not be replaced by a course retaken


Division II –16 core courses now needed: • 3 years of English

• 2 years of math (Algebra I or Higher)

• 2 years of natural/physical science (one lab)

• 3 year of additional English, math or science

• 2 years of social science

• 4 years of additional core courses

Division II Test Score / GPA Requirements

• Core grade-point average must be at least 2.000

• Minimum test score of 820 on the SAT and 68 sum score on the ACT


The NCAA approves core courses, NOT the high school• Each high school has an approved core course list on the

Eligibility Center’s website.

• If the course is not on your high school list at the NCAA, it will not count as a core course

• If a course title on your transcript does not match the title on the NCAA’s list, it will not count as a core course

• Meet with high school academic counselor to review your enrollment and your planned courses

• High School Core Course GPA needed based on test score (and vice versa)

• Min Sum ACT: 64, Min SAT 780

• Core GPA 2.30 (Minimum for Competition)

Qualifier, Academic Redshirt, Non-qualifier

Qualifier

• Athletic scholarship, practice and compete in first year in residence

• Four years to compete

Academic Redshirt (Below 2.3)

• Athletic scholarship and practice only in your first year in residence

• Four years to compete

Non-Qualifier

• No scholarship, practice or competition in your first year in residence

• Only three years to compete, with ability to regain 4th


• Added academic redshirt status, may apply if:• Did not complete 10 of the 16 core courses prior to senior year

• Did not complete 7 of those 10 in the correct core course areas

• Did not meet test score/core course GPA


College Admission Process vs. NCAA Eligibility

• Two separate determinations

• NCAA qualifier ≠ automatic admissions vice versa


Step Three

Amateurism - Jeopardize NCAA amateur status: • Formally declaring into professional contract, compete with

a professional team in hockey or skiing, or accept a salary

• Accept prize money exceeding expenses for athletic event

• Enter into agreement or accepting benefits from agents

• Bottom-line: ok to practice and receive actual & necessary expenses


Division I & II- Years of Eligibility• Div. I Schools - Five years to complete four years of

competition starting from initial full-time enrollment

• Div. II Schools - Ten (10) full-time semesters to complete four (4) seasons of competition

• Redshirts – no competition while representing the institution during an academic year

• Medical Redshirts – limited competition in the first half of a playing season prior to a season ending injury

• Prospects may call or write coaches, or visit with coaches on campus at any time

• Unlimited communication (letters, phone calls, text messages) beginning January 1st of the sophomore year in HS

Off-campus In Person Contacts

• DI: July 1 following junior year with some sport exceptions

• DII: June 15 following junior year

• DIII: Unlimited after junior year

Unofficial (unpaid) visits

• DI, DII, DIII: Unlimited, anytime grades 9-12

• May receive 3 tickets to home games only

• Must pay for own meals, transportation and/or lodging

Official (paid) visits

• DI & DII: 1st day of classes in senior year, 5 total visits DI and DII combined, with only 1 per school; M & W Basketball exception

• DIII: Senior year, unlimited but only 1 per school


Financial Aid / Scholarship Basics• DIII schools do not offer athletic scholarships

• NLI is a contract between athlete and college (DI & DII)

• Scholarship offer must accompany the NLI

• Athletic scholarships may be multi-year agreements between prospect and institution, offering schools' discretion

• Full Scholarship = tuition & required fees, room & board, books, cost of attendance

• Summer aid: potentially available for scholarship athletes

• Fifth-year (exhausted eligibility) athletic aid to graduate may be available
