Edmonton Lab Rescue

Take the road to the Edmonton Humane Societythey shelter more than dogs and cats!

My name is Mia...although I also answer to Princess Mia and Mamma Mia. I walk very nicely and I’m quite smart and gentle too. I am around 1.5yrs old, extremely loving and listen well. I am also already spayed...after watching an episode of “The Price is Right”, I decided to take Bob Barker’s advice and help control the pet population. Hu-man children might not enjoy my “lust” for life, so it might be best if I find a home with those over 16 years old. I also love skinny dipping!

Hey there put the brakes on! Did you know that the Edmonton Humane Society cares for more than dogs and cats. In fact if you’re looking for hamsters, bunnies, or birds you might want to check us out.

Morgan here! I am an ener-getic, affec-tionate, 5 yr old, female, purebred

Chocolate Lab. My ideal place is in a French speaking home. I understand and respond best to French commands. I’ll need to be the only pet in the home as I do have some issues with cats and other dogs. I love people and love spending time on the couch or out walking. I am an excellent family pet but I don’t get along so well with children under 12…I’m just not sure what to make of them! I have a personality that is next to none, I also sing and love to chat.

Howdy! Molson is my name and I am a 1yr old Lab X who is look-ing for a home. I am housetrained, great with kids of all ages, wonder-ful with other dogs and even pretty good with cats. I have a loving personality and

love bath time. I need a fenced yard and someone that will walk and take good care of me...in return I will show you true, uncondi-tional love.

www.labrescue1.blinkz.comHi I’m Strider. I’m a male Yellow Lab X. My ideal home is with a retired couple

that is home a great deal. I would also do well with another gentle dog. I am gentle, good with children of all ages, patient and never aggressive. I walk without a leash as I am very loyal. I do like to protect my home and will bark at strangers until you tell me it’s ok. What I don’t like is the comings and goings of a busy home. I’m also not much for being left alone or confined (kenneled). I love the outdoors, going for walks, and off leash areas. It takes very little to make me happy...I truly am a very good boy!

My name is Bunny and I am a beautiful, petite little girl. I am 2.5 years old and was surrendered by my family. They were very sad to give me up but they had to move overseas. They contacted the McDonald Family Rescue and have trusted them to find me the perfect home. I am a very active little piggy and I just love apples. I can be a bit skittish, but once I am out of the cage I am very cuddly and easy to handle. So please call 452-1744 and take me home.

I’m Layla and they just can’t say enough good things about me! I am a gorgeous, spayed, one year old girl . They tell me I am a Coon Hound X who is incredibly smart, well-socialized, athletic and sweet. I already know my basic obedience commands, and being very food-motivated is sure to help with future training. I love to romp and play hard and with a harness I am fairly good on leash. Life has not been that easy so far but I am adaptable and affection-ate - two qualities which are sure to make me a valued member of any new home. I am looking for

a family who can devote lots of quality time to me (with lots of indoor time as my short coat makes me unsuitable as an outdoor companion for a large part of the year). A securely fenced yard is important too. I need a family who will make me an integral part of daily activities.

With these movie-star good looks, lovable per-sonality and sweet nature they say I should find a home really soon! My name is Jake and I am an 11 month old, 65lb, neutered, male, Malamute/Ger-man Shepherd X. I’m not all good looks either, I’m smart...and sensitive too! Sometimes I can be a little shy in new situations, but I stay well-mannered and friendly with everyone I meet!

Forever in our hearts

My name is Mis-chief and I am an absolutely adorable American Eskimo X. Sometimes I can be a little shy at first, but I come around quick when given the chance to get to know you. I am neutered and have

had my shots too. I love going on walks even when it’s a little muddy outside and can’t wait to find my own family to walk, play & run around with! I can hardly wait until they come to pick me up and takes me home forever...could you be the ones I am meant to be with?

Hiya! I am a 10 week old Black Lab/Hound X looking for an exceptional lifestyle! My new home should come complete with lots of daily exercise, training, playtime, as well as an indoor bed (I have short hair!), plenty of love, quality nutrition and veteri-nary care. Sound like a tall order? I’m worth it!! I would be best suited to a very active home with a safely fenced yard. Keep in mind I am also a hound who will follow my nose!

Tails From Home

Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

Grade 3 Class at Niton Junction School Write Letters of Love to PARS Dogs

The children of the grade 3 class in Niton Junction put pen to paper and wrote letters to the animals in Prairie Animal Rescue’s care. After completing a fundraising effort to help the animals in need of homes, the children raised $160! Terra McLean, founder of the organi-zation, was extremely touched that the children would open their hearts to help the animals in PARS care. Each student chose a dog and wrote them a letter of hope and love.

Lapping up those loving kisses from your pet shouldn’t be a stinky proposition. Kathy Istace, AHT, VTS-D (Animal Health Technologist and a Veterinary Tech-

nician Specialist in Dentistry) at the Mayfield Veterinary Hospital, Edmonton, will tell you that. Kathy is part of a team at the hospital that is determined to educate pet owners on the importance of preventive pet oral health care.

All too often she sees the damage that is caused by periodontal disease. (Inflamma-tion and infection of the gums, ligaments, and bone surround-ing teeth.) This infection is what causes some pet’s bad breath – and that’s not even close to the end of the story. A sore mouth, bleeding gums, tooth loss, and even infections involving internal organs like the heart and kidneys can result if this disease is not prevent-ed or treated.

“The only way to prevent periodontal disease is by daily tooth brushing. Brushing the teeth disrupts the layer of plaque, preventing the overgrowth of bacteria. It is be-cause plaque builds up so quickly that brushing must be done at least once a day to be effective.” says Kathy.

Mouth showing periodontal disease

Treats, toys, oral rinses, and some prescription diets are formulated to help in the control of plaque and tartar. These are not substitutes for brushing. However, they can be used as part of a home dental care regime to assist in the prevention of periodontal disease. Ask your veteri-narian what they recommend as not all of these products have been clinically proven or are appropriate for all pets.

If your pet already has red or bleeding gums, tartar build-up, or loose teeth, tooth brushing is no longer enough to treat the problem. A professional cleaning by a veteri-narian done while your dog or cat is under anesthesia is necessary to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline, and to assess and treat problem areas. Regular tooth brushing after any problems have been treated is recommended to help prevent further periodontal disease.

A routine program of dental home care may be challenging at first, but persistence will help your pet maintain a healthy, odor-free mouth benefiting both you and your pet long term. Think of all those happy kisses!

“Everyday I see pet owners who take extra special care of their pets, but do not think about the importance of proper oral hygiene mea-sures. Part of my job is to educate our clients on how to keep their pet’s mouths clean and healthy.” Kathy Istace, AHT, VTS-D

If you wanna

know if he loves you so... it’s in his kiss

Kathy’s tips to help you get started on your pet’s home dental care:

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, rubber fingerbrush, or cloth wrapped around your finger along with a flavored tooth-paste formulated for pets. Human toothpastes contain detergents that can irritate your pet’s stomach because they are unable to spit them out.

If you have never brushed your pet’s teeth before, start out slowly. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your finger and offer it to your pet daily for several days as a reward. Once your pet accepts the toothpaste as a treat, apply it to your pet’s teeth with your finger to simulate the brushing motion of a toothbrush.

After 5-7 days, switch to your chosen toothbrush. Make small, circular strokes along the gumline with the brush angled at 45 degrees so that the bristles will reach up under the gumline. After 8-10 strokes in one area, move on to the next section of teeth. Move across the upper teeth (both outer & inner sides) and repeat for lower teeth.

Daily brushing will keep your pet’s mouth clean & healthy

Healthy teeth and gums due to proper oral hygiene.

Hi! I’m Delilah and I am a 1 year old Lab/Re-triever/Collie X. I may look small, but I am full of energy and have a lot of love to give. I love playing with anything squeaky and especially love playing tug-o-war with my rope. My foster mom just bought us a huge kiddie pool to splash around in and now I just can’t wait to get to the lake so that I can swim! I am learn-ing all my basic com-

mands and I’m already crate/house trained. I hope to find a young active family that is willing to cuddle and scratch me behind my ears on a daily basis.

My name is Diego. I am a laid back kind of guy and even though I look tough, I love to be cuddled. My favorite place to relax after a hard day of playing is in my crate where I sleep peacefully all night long. I love to run around with my foster siblings and especially love it when the children from next door drop by to scratch my belly – boy, do I love a good belly scratching!!! Did I mention that I

am house trained? I think I would make the perfect addition to a young family that would cuddle me before bedtime and keep up with my strong physical daily regimen of play and spry personality; after all, I do need to stay trim and give the ladies some eye candy!

They call me Coal because I am completely black, except for a few perfect white whiskers on my chin. I am very af-fectionate and love to be with people, but I also get along very well with other dogs, big or small. My favorite activity is playing fetch with my best tennis ball, and I tell ya, I am always ready and so fast that I catch the ball in mid-flight every time! I hope I can find an active and loving home that is willing to keep up with my energy level and love me forever!

My name is Sweet Shelby and my foster mom says that I am a hoot!!! I am a very bouncy, friendly girl who loves to be the center of attention. I am a little bit shy at first, but you can definitely persuade

me to warm up fast with a nice belly rub! I am very affectionate and like to cuddle up with my foster brother to keep warm at night…I don’t even mind the cats around here! I am crate trained and almost housetrained. My sweet little heart has a lot of love to give and I hope that I can find a family to love and spoil me rotten like I deserve.

Misty Creek Dog Rescue is a not-for profit rescue facility and sanctuary that will soon be celebrating 10 years of sav-ing and placing unwanted, abused and abandoned dogs. We care for all our fuzzy friends until they find a home. Our dogs come to us from Animal Con-trol, other animal shelters, First Nation Communities and owner surrenders. We promote lifetime guardianship and the importance of spaying/neutering to control the pet population and help res-cued pets live a long healthy and pros-perous life. All of our dogs are altered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped prior to adoption. Our dogs also come with 6 weeks of Pet Plan Insurance and an instructional DVD titled Training Your Adopted Pet.

Okay guys, I have been here since February. My name is Corbin and I am such a sweet girl. I have an awesome personality! Someone take me home and play with me please? please? I love to chase the hose and love water pe-riod. I don’t jump and I have really good manners. I am a 1yr old Bouvier X. I don’t shed really, you just have to clip me.

Hi, my name is Jordie. I was adopted a year ago and for some reason my own-ers said they just don’t have time for me anymore. I am a very happy, loveable, 5yr old Cocker Spaniel. I have been neutered and vaccinated. I love older kids and kitty cats. I need a new home please call soon if you are the family for me!

Kricket is my name and I am a Visila/Lab X. I like most other doggies. They call me Squirrel here because I am a little squirrelly and sometimes spinney...but that’s just another way of showing you how much fun I am! I am friendly and would probably do best with older kids. I am a very sweet and good girl who would love to have a chance with a family and home of my very own.

Hello? Hello? My name is Abby... anyone there?? I am not a very big girl and I love to cuddle up. I would really like to be an only dog as I like all the attention and don’t like to share. I made the journey all the way from Kan-sas too. I have been in shelters most of my life. I am only 1yr old and have lots of love and playing left in me. I hope someone out there will show me what a real life and family is like very soon.

isty Creek Dog RescueMFor the Love of DogsFor the Love of Dogs

However, I don’t like cats or other dogs because I want to be the centre of attention and that’s all there is to it! I love to chase my ball and play in the pool. I actually lay down in my pool to cool off! I also came from the shelter in Kansas which sadly was closing down. I was there since I was a young pup. I am well mannered, crate trained and just an awesome dog!

An Apple A Day

One of the most common problems I see with rabbits is that associated with improper care, especially nutrition. Hopefully, this article will help clarify some of the misconceptions about how to feed our small furry friends.

Daryl Meger, DVM

Dr. Meger is a practicing veterinarian and owner of Whitemud Creek Veterinary Clinic, Edmonton

Rabbit Nutrition

Rabbits make intelligent and friendly pets. They are herbivores designed to do well on grasses and leaves and make the most out of foods that many other animals cannot digest. One of the reasons they can do this is by eating cecotropes. Cecotropes are special droppings rich in organisms packed with nutrients like amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins. Rabbits typically eat these spe-cial droppings as soon as they exit the body and they will not typically be seen by the owner unless the bunny is ill. Unlike the small, circular, firm and usually dark brown normal rabbit feces, cecotropes are elongated, greenish in color, coated with mucous and have a strong odor. If you see large numbers of these, it is time to see your veterinarian. The most common problem I see with bunny nutrition is the feeding of too much commercial pellets and starchy foods. Instead, grass hays such as timo-thy, oat, rye, barley or Bermuda grasses should be the main portion of their diet. Try to feed a mixed grass hay which provides 2 or more kinds of grass. Hay will vary in quality, with sun-dried hay being the best in retaining most of its nutrients. Try to provide fresh smelling hay and allow it to be exposed to the air to avoid excessive dampness. This hay should always be kept available, and should be considered the mainstay of their diet. Legume hays such as alfalfa or clover have alot of nutrients, but may have more calcium, protein and calories than most house pet rabbits require. Exces-sive feeding of these hays or the pelleted form of these is the leading cause of not only gastrointestinal problems, but urinary problems as well. I am not a huge fan of commercially prepared rab-bit pellets, and feel they are generally not

I am a young female tuxedo cat that was turned into the Leduc pound as a stray. They call me Sonya and I am quite calm and very independent. I use my litter box and scratching post with no problems. I am fine around other cats until they invade my personal space, at which point I will bat at them…but just a little bit!

My name is Sadie and I am a 1 yr old Blue Tick Coon Hound. I am housetrained and very affectionate. I absolutely love being with people and need lots of exercise. I have good recall, I’m good on-leash and as a special bonus I have a beautiful hound voice…probably the best in the West! I am very sweet, super with other dogs and I am quite gentle with the cats. I have almost stopped counter-surfing and haven’t chewed any expensive running shoes for over a month now! If someone is willing to put in the time and effort with me, I will be a wonderful addition to the family.

Hello, My name is Angora and I am as soft as my name says. I am an 8mth old pregnant, young lady. I will be giving birth any day now and will be available for adop-tion as soon as I wean my kittens and get spayed. I will be busy doing the Mom thing for awhile but I am hoping that when I am ready, there will be a wonderful place lined up for me that I can call home forever.

I answer (as best a cat can!) to Delphie and people just adore my gorgeous grey-green eyes. I prefer a quiet life where I can make my daily rounds, watch birds out the window, and sit on the counter to chat with you while you do the dishes. I do fine with other cats as long as they are quiet and respectful. Quiet, cat friendly dogs could be OK. I am a neat & tidy kind of girl that wags my tail like a dog! I LOVE attention, but I do become stressed with small children or active/curious dogs around and it can manifest itself in the form of an upset tummy. So a family with just adults or with older children would be ideal.

My name is Dottie and I am a fabulous girl! I am about 4yrs old and they say I am a Border Collie/Heeler X. I would be a perfect fit for someone who wants a

dog “but doesn’t really want a dog”. I have excel-lent house manners (but keep your defrosting roasts off the counter!) and I love everyone. I am a bit of a couch potato and will warm it for you all day if you let me. Walking me is a breeze because I heel so politely and sometimes even have to be coaxed to hurry along! I get on well with other dogs, cats and rabbits and am great with kids in general. I have lived on a farm and in town and adapt well to either lifestyle. If you are looking for a laid back companion who travels well in the car and just wants to hang out then give us a call and come meet me!

I am a 5.5yr old female with a beautiful round face and majestic yellow eyes. My name is Munchkin and I am part Manx although I do have a tail. I am very quiet, affectionate and content to be on my own sleeping in my special places. However, when I come to socialize I am very loving and can be quite chatty. I am used to other cats and would enjoy a quiet and easygo-ing environment. I am not thrilled about being picked up too much and would

probably do best in a home with adults or older/respectful children.

Safe Haven Animal Rescue Society (SHARES)My name is Thelma, my sister Louise and I came from the lo-cal pound. I am pretty shy but given a little time I come around quick.... espe-cially to get lots

of kisses and cuddles! I bond very quickly...and just look at how sweet my little face is! I too have short little legs and stand at just 2ft tall and around 50lbs. I am a solid, quiet, girl and only want to please. I like other dogs and cats and I am well behaved in the car.

Howdy! My name is Louise and I came with my sister Thelma...we can be a little on the shy and quiet side. My coat is shorter than Thelma’s and I am definitely more outgoing. I also just love to cuddle and warm up quickly to people. I am about 2ft tall and around 35lbs. I get along just fine with other dogs, cats and

young children as well. My favorite thing to do is charge around the backyard with my foster brother. I am a very sweet girl...but I still need some work on the kennel-training thing!

It’s me Corky!!! I am 2 ft tall and about 20 lbs. I like other dogs, cats and travel great in the car. I love to follow my people around the house and outside I like

to fetch a ball or play Frisbee. I am around 2-3yrs old, crate and potty trained and I sit calmly when asked...however I need an experienced owner as I can be quite bossy! I am a smart little guy who does want to please and I love to shake a paw, give kisses and get attention. I also have great recall and come when called - even when there are squirrels and birds around...now that’s a good dog don’t you think???

Handsome Harry here! I have a beautiful coat with tabby markings. I am about 1.5 yrs old and currently in foster care. I get along well with other cats, small

dogs and children. I’ve been very patient, but I just can’t wait to meet the family I will be spending the rest of my life with…could that be you?

Max is what they call me, that or handsome! I am about 1yr old and can be a bit shy at first, but I love to play with my toys! Word around here is

I am good-natured and get along well with other cats. I need a home where someone with patience will help me feel secure and MAXimize my potential…aren’t I clever?

My name is Sebastian and I’m a white and brown tabby male who was recently returned to SNAP with my friends Harmony and

Rerun. I’m two too. No not a tutu silly!!! I’m two years of age as well. Though very confused as to why I’m here, I’m starting to settle in but really don’t want to stay here long. Not to boast but I come with extra toes for the same great low adoption fee. Come on by the West End Petsmart to chat with me!

Hi! I’m Harmony and this is my brother Rerun. I am a black smoke female and Rerun is the black one with the gorgeous yellow eyes.

Sebastian and the two of us were recently returned to SNAP due to allergies. We are all about 2yrs old, and find ourselves very confused about our current situation. Though very frightened and timid, we are all starting to warm up and our true personalities are beginning to shine! If you’d be willing to adopt both or even all three of us we would really love it as we have all grown up together. For now we are bunking at the West End Petsmart.

Corrly is my name and puppy fun is my game...or one of them anyways! I am a friendly 2 month old female Collie X, that loves attention and I really just could not get any cuter!

My name is Knub and I am a 1 year old male Catahoula X. I am a very nice, short haired

boy that does not have a super high energy level, but I will still need my exercise! I love kids and other dogs but need some work on my cat skills.

Howdy! My name is Cletus and I am a 3.5 month old male Shep/Rottie X. I am extremely hand-some and just keep getting bigger and big-

ger. I am a hungry pup but I love attention from you two leggers and will gladly leave the food to follow you around.

Mooki...that’s me! My name is just plain fun to say! I am a 6 week old kitten that is the sole survivor in my litter. Mom was having a tough time finding

food for even her survival. But, good news!! My mom Looki and myself are doing much better now and will keep thriving in any loving home. We are both good with kids, other cats and dogs.

necessary for pet rabbits on an otherwise balanced diet. Feeding green foods is an excellent way to provide a variety of nutrients and provide water. Make sure the bunny is eating primarily hay and go slowly when initially introducing these foods. Monitor the feces carefully and look for soft stools. There are many greens that you can provide. In general, the more green they are the better. Some specific examples are broccoli, dandelion greens and flowers, parsley, romaine let-tuce, brussel sprouts and others. Remember, hay first and then about 1/2 cup of greens per pound of bunny each day. Treat foods should be limited to no more than one-half a tablespoon per pound of bunny each day. These include fresh foods such as kiwi, raspberries, pears, pineapple, strawberries, apples, carrots, melons and others. I see many pet rabbit owners feed commercially prepared treat foods. Their foods often contain excessive amounts of starch and fat. I recommend avoidance of such foods as they can lead to gastrointestinal problems and obesity. Some examples of these are breads, grains in general, seeds, beans and sugary products. If proper diets are provided then rabbits will not need vitamin, salt or mineral supplementation. Remember to also provide a fresh source of water and daily exercise to keep your bunny hopping!

Under no circumstances should any child and puppy be left unsupervised — even for a minute. It takes a fraction of a second for a dog bite to occur, so turning your back for even a moment could be dangerous. It is important you stay aware and understand

how to have puppies and children together safely. Older Children learn a lot from watching how the adults around them treat the puppy. If you are respectful of your puppy, chances are the children around your puppy will be also. These children can be taught safe games to play that do not encourage aggression in puppies such as “hide and seek” or “fetch” instead of chase games or rough play. Encourage older children to take part in training the puppy and monitor them while they do it. Children have a tendency to continuously repeat commands without following through...this only teaches the puppy to ignore commands. Toddlers require the most supervision. Toddlers do not under-stand what hurts or scares a puppy so if you are not there to protect your puppy, it will be forced to protect itself. A poke in the eye, tripping or falling into the pup, hugging, pulling on tails or ears, are just a few of the scenarios you must prevent. They could make the pup turn around quickly and knock the tod-dler over or worse yet, snap at the youngster. Give your puppy a place of his own to get away from the children, but ensure that the children know the puppy’s area is off limits to them. It is at this age that you want to teach children not to touch or approach a strange dog without permission from you AND the dogs owner. Do not allow children to carry around puppies. The puppy can get squeezed or squished which can result in de-fensive aggression when the pup gets older. Instead have them sit and pet the puppy on their lap. Before you bring newborn babies home set up the babies room...crib, change table...and spend some time in there everyday. Sprinkle some baby powder around, rub some lotion on yourself, and turn the baby mobile on so the puppy recog-nizes the smells & sounds. If anything in the puppy’s lifestyle will change, change it before the baby comes home. For example if the puppy will no longer be allowed in the babies room set the boundaries before you bring the baby home. If you do it

Hi! I’m Bridget. Although I’m 8 yrs old, I sure don’t feel like a senior and I don’t look or act like one either! I used to race, but a broken leg ended my career, and I’ve been looking for a new home ever since. My leg didn’t heal very well but it doesn’t bother me. I still like going for walks, and will even race around the yard if another dog wants to play! I love people and attention, and can even be a little sassy if

the situation calls for it! I am a cuddler and have a lot of love to share with a family who is willing to open their hearts and home to me.

Hey, it’s Dewey here! I’m a happy guy and I’m really friendly towards everybody. I love being brushed, it feels so good that I will stand there for as long as you’re willing to brush me! I’m a natural born leader and I am easy to get along with as long as the other dogs around understand that. One thing I don’t like is cats, but other than that I am a pretty mellow fellow! I don’t bark, I’m not overly energetic and I would love to have a family of my very own.

My name is Mac. I’m not a very big greyhound, and I’m told that I’m a real handsome guy with a great personality! I can be a little cautious when I first meet someone, but that’s just me and I get over it real quick. I don’t really need a ton of exercise, but I have enough energy to be your training partner, and I promise to help you reach any exercise goals you may have! I don’t believe in barking to get attention and I am an easy going kinda guy. If I could have one wish, it would be to find a family to hang out with. Will you make my wish come true?

after the dog will relate the baby with the negative of not being allowed in there anymore. Ensure that the pup still gets lots of attention. Relate the baby with “positives” - for example, while changing the baby have puppy treats on the change table and toss one out every so often. Talk to the puppy while you are changing the baby. Allow the puppy to sniff the baby and get to know him. Freshen up on basic commands like sit, down, stay and walk nice — after all you will be walking with a stroller now too.

They call me Mischief, but don’t put any stock in my name! I am a 2.5yr old female and as sweet as sweet can be! I spent the better part of the last year caged with little to no time out for playing or being a ferret. Despite being caged up all of that time, I am a gentle, affectionate and more than willing to forgive and forget. I do however have one small issue.....I am scared to death of other ferrets! Dogs and cats are okay but other ferrets.....uh uh no way! One of my fa-vorite things to do is swim - in the water bowl of course! I also adore stuffies and toys with bells

on them. I would be a perfect little girl for a first time ferret owner.

Our names are Snickers and Loki and we are both long, lean and very much bonded to each other. My name is Loki and I enjoy dips in the water bowl on occasion and will happily stick

my entire head under water just to see what I can see! Snickers is into leather and will confiscate and hide anything falling within that category. Both of us boys love to play chase which is even more fun if you join in. Sometimes I even like to actually sneak up and give you a tiny little nip on the foot just to get you to join in the game! We are both used to being around dogs, cats and other ferrets and are only 1.5 years old.

Hi my name is Buddy and I am a recovering addict! I am 1yr old and addicted to chewing on all things rubber! The AFS people say this is why my tummy always

hurts so much and why I kept throwing up. I guess that is also why my previous owners gave me up....they said I cost too much cause they kept having to take me to the vets to have the stuff I ate taken out. The AFS says that I am a very sweet and gentle boy though, and that if my new home keeps those yummy rub-bery things out of reach and gives me lots of play time and lovings I won’t be as tempted to eat things that are bad for me. (Note: Buddy has had four blockages in under 1 year).

Bandit is a very popular name for us ferrets and since I was the 4th Bandit to arrive at the AFS this year I was dubbed Jelly Belly by my foster mom. Since be-ing in foster care the “Belly” part

of “Jelly” has disappeared and now I just go by Jelly. I am a year old but before I arrived at the AFS I had never seen the outside of a cage except through the coloured plastic of a large exercise ball. Ferrets have bound-less energy and a physical need to check out everything around them, so because I wasn’t being allowed to work off all that energy I started biting. In my foster home I have free roam 24/7 and my biting has already im-proved significantly. My foster mom expects that in my “forever” home I will bond with the humans there and stop altogether but I will likely always be a little bitey with strangers.

Aren’t I a handsome fellow? I came to the ERAS Rescue under false pretenses - the person who surrendered me said I was a classroom pet, but when the school was contacted to find out more about me, they told my rescuers that they had never had an iguana! My condition has really improved since coming here, and now I’m eating really well and working on getting potty trained (but I’m not quite there yet!). I’m probably full grown or close to it, and I love to hang out with people! I would love to find a permanent home where I could spend lots of time with my new family!

Hello! My name is Stubby, and I’m looking for a new home! I’ve been through a lot I was found abandoned on Highway 14. As a result, my ERAS rescuers don’t know much about my history or why I am missing part of my tail. However, that doesn’t stop me from being an active guy, and I love to climb! I’m a good eater, and I’m also potty trained!

ERAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to education as well as rescue of reptiles and amphibians in the Edmonton area. In 2006, we received 479 calls to our phone line and placed 42 animals, bringing our total number of rescued animals to date (since 1999) to 417. However, there are still many more animals that need foster and permanent homes.

If you would like more information about adopting, please call our phone line! Reptiles and amphibians have specific needs, so please research the needs of the animal you are interested in.

Coming to an ERAS meeting is a great place to start!

My name is Hydie and I came to SCARS just in the nick of time...whatever that means! My brother (Jeckyl) and Mom (Gretchen) and I are a quiet and grateful bunch that just adore getting love and attention.

Sinbad here...I am a wonderful young guy around 9 months old who has been flying solo for far too long...I’m a little on the skinny side and looking for permanent and regular meals! I’m built like a tank and could possibly be an Akita X...they think I still have some growing to do! I am smart, sweet and love to snuggle. Please call (780) 963-6134.

My name is Shayla and I am becoming way less shy around new people, which is a HUGE step for me. I have learned basic commands (“sit”, “down”, “wait”, “stay” and “leave it”) and I’m already leash/crate trained! My foster mom says that I am such a gorgeous girl and my beautiful eyes and permanent smile would melt anyone’s heart! I am a 7month old, spayed/vaccinated, microchipped Collie X. Call (780) 637-0999 for more on me.

Hi folks, I’m Mya and I am a very sweet girl. The kids here all argue over who gets to walk me because I never pull on the leash. I would prefer to be the only dog in the family, and I will tell you why. Before I was rescued some other dogs hurt me

really, badly. I had to have many stitches. So, I’m sure you can understand why other dogs still scare me and make me a little defensive. Please call (780) 675-3018 for more information

My name is Chloe and I am truly so sweet and eager to please. I am a pretty little Border Col-lie that weighs only 40lbs. I just showed up in someone’s yard and all that was known was that I needed a bath and that I love you

people and will do anything to please you. I listen very well, both on and off leash and seem to be house trained. I am hoping for a new family who will see how amazingly special I am! Please call (780) 675-3018 for more information

Hi, my name is Tia! I am a large Husky X who is super sweet with loads of love to burn! All I really want to do is be your best friend! I love other dogs, but I really love my fosterhome’s

2yr old non-fur kid the most!! We are about the same size! I am looking for a home that is committed to giving me lots of time to run and play outside...but then again, doesn’t every dog need that? Please call (780) 675-3018for more information.

Now, that’s refreshing! My foster family has discovered my new favorite pastime. Attacking the spray from the hose on a hot day! My name is Ben and I am a 2yr old mixed breed guy who loves toys, and treats. I walk well on leash, and I am a pretty easy-going guy. My ideal home would have a big fenced yard, lots of love and tons of squeaky toys! Please call (780) 471-2275 for more info on me.

My name is Frazier. I am 10 weeks old & a very hand-some boy. My sister Amber & I were found in the

dump? Why would someone throw treasures in the dump? Maybe that’s why I really don’t like sharing with her...as I always think she is getting more then me. Our foster mom keeps filling our dish though so I guess I don’t really have too much to worry about. Do you want to come meet Amber and I? Phone (780) 637-0999 and ask for Frazier. Amber will be waiting by the phone, but I will be out playing ball.
