The Musings of Pastor Jimmy

Hello FriendsEvery year it seems that I get dozens of emails to buy books and attend seminars to develop a vision

for our church. I get that we as believers need to keep fresh, but what I am noticing is that the following year the vision is now out of date. I am guilty of at times buying into the new fads. However, this year at Annual Conference our Bishop made it clear that the vision is already set before us, and guess what, it’s in the Bible.

Jesus said in Mark 12:30-31, “AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL (life), AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND (thought, understanding), AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’ 31 This is the second: ‘YOU SHALL [unselfishly] LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (AMP). Jesus tells us as His children, the Church, we are to love each other. This is not to be confused with tolerating sin. This verse resonated with me that we already have the “instructions” on how we are to live. This has sparked a fire in me to dive deeper. As United Methodist, we have a guideline as well that comes from scripture on how we as the Church need to approach doing live and engaging.

This method is called the Quadrilateral.

As you can see in the picture above the quadrilateral is made up of four powerful, yet equally important points. As Christians, Scripture is the source and standard for Christian doctrine. Tradition is experience and the witness of development and growth of the faith through the past centuries and in many nations and cultures. Experience is the individual's (that’s you!) understanding and appropriating of the faith in the light of his or her own life. Through Reason the individual Christian brings to bear on the Christian faith discerning and thought. These four elements taken together bring the individual Christian to a mature and fulfilling understanding of the Christian faith and the required response of worship and service.

As we enter this new season our goal as Mt Olivet is to, as the body, embrace the Word of God and the heritage of who we are as individuals and as a Church. We are going to embrace the thoughts, stories, and ideas of who we are in Jesus and use this to reach our community. As we march forward together, our Church will not be the same. I truly believe that God is working in the life of our Church family and the best is yet to come!

Keep Loving One Another!
