GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Guide

Greetings from Lahti!Lahti is participating in the World Design Cap-ital Helsinki 2012 project together with Helsin-ki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa. Lahti will be filled of stunning design-related projects and fairs already since autumn 2011 and there will be only more of them to come in 2012. The de-sign capital project will be accompanied by the vivid cultural life of Lahti region and by its var-ied landscapes of ridges and lakes, which make the region a unique travel destination all year around.

Thanks to the Salpausselkä ridges, there are genuinely four seasons in the Lahti region, each of which provides its own specialties for tourists and leisure activities.

In the wintertime, the Häme province is an ex-cellent place for skiing enthusiasts: there are al-most 170 km of lighted skiing tracks on the grounds of the City of Lahti alone! The ten lighted slalom slopes of Snow Centre Messilä ensure that you do not have to go farther than Hollola to find the joy of downhill skiing. The region’s several well-being centres, such as Messilä, Tallukka, Kumpeli, Vierumäki and Pajulahti, offer versatile services for your entire family.

This is why families often come to Finland to

enjoy their leisure. You can choose the vacation of your dreams – enjoy the quiet and beautiful na-ture, see the theatre or go to concerts, try out the VellamoMenu, sightsee, have a sporting holiday or shop. Or you can make a perfect combination of all of these!

Welcome to the heart of Päijät-Häme, the home of Lahden Sininen beer, to have the holiday of your dreams. Once here, you’ll be in no hurry to get anywhere.

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Sights & events

WINTER EVENTS IN LAHTI REGIONDuring winter the Lahti region is filled with interesting events such as the Stars of the stadium snow-board competition or the legend-ary Salpausselän kisat and Padas-joen Postihiihto. Everyone can surely find something interesting to do from this broad offer.

SALPAUSSELKÄ SKI GAMES The history of the Salpausselkä Ski Games is long and colourful. The father of the games was legendary Finnish athlete and a jack of all trades in sports, Lauri “Tahko” Pihkala. He wrote in Suomen Urheilulehti maga-zine on 13 March 1922 that Finland should have an annual global skiing event and that Lahti would be the best venue for such an event.

People in Lahti did not hesitate: Lahden Hiih-toseura skiing club was established three weeks later, on 3 April 1922, and the club’s primary pur-pose was arranging an annual skiing event equal-

ling Holmenkollen. The club succeeded in this, because Salpausselkä Ski Games grew into a great annual event that has made Lahti renown all around the world.

In 2012 the games will take place, as usual, from 2 to 4 March 2012. All in all eight world cup tournaments will be held in Lahti. The ski jump-ing program includes Saturday evenings’ team ski jump and the individual competition on a large hill. In cross-country skiing the disciplines are men’s pursuit and women’s pursuit as well as tra-ditional style sprints.

FINLANDIA SKIING EVENT The Finlandia Skiing Event from Hämeenlinna to Lahti was arranged for the first time in 1974. More than a thousand skiers participated that time. This was much more than the arrangers expected. Olympic winners and other celebrities were also seen, and the mas-cot of the event was a polar bear that had been wakened from its hibernation.

The popularity of the Finlandia-hiihto skiing competition has remained steady and all in all 7.000 skiers are expected to participate in the event in spring 2012. The traditional skiing com-petition will take place on Saturday 25.2. and the

to the website of Padasjoki Aviation Club: "Every-one – from water polo players to kite flyers – are more than welcome to joint the fun”. Arctic Hys-teria will take place on 26–27 of March 2012.

STARS OF THE STADIUM On 11th of February Lahti Sports Centre will be filled to the brim when the Stars of the Stadium event will arrive to Fin-land for the first time. The snowboarding event of-fers activities and shows to the entire family.

The event’s main competition is the men’s 4 star TTR BigAir competition. 30 top snowboard-ers will be invited to the competition from all over the world and, in addition, 10 snowboarders will have the chance to be included through qualifying games and wild cards. The competition will take place on the large ramp constructed to the K-90 landing slope.

ENTIRE TOWN’S CHRISTMAS Lahden Joulukylä brings the spirit of old times to the Lahden Kaup-patori market: bazaar, entertainment for children, Santa’s elves, crib and the real Christmas spirit. The world of Christmas tastes can be found from the historic town hall courtyard. Come and join the whole town’s Christmas party on 10–22.12.

free style competition will be held on Sunday 26.2. The length of the Finlandia-hiihto is 50 kil-ometres.

Next summer, skiing activities will change to those of canoeing, when the city will be the loca-tion for the Lahti Midnight Ultra Marathon 24 hour canoeing event.

MESSILÄ AND EVENTS There will be all kind of activities in the Snow Centre Messilä throughout the winter. The season is filled with various hillside events from SuomiSlalom tournaments to larger skiing tours. Slalom skiers and skateboarders will gather for the season’s Friday Night Fever events. And the legendary Winter Blues will take place on 21st of January in Tallin Bistro. During the even-ing the skiers will be entertained by Ismo Haavis-to Band.

ARCTIC HYSTERIA AT PADASJOKI A weekend-long event Arctic Hysteria gathers enthusiasts of aviation and winter sports to the dock of Pa-dasjoki, on the icy cover of Päijänne. The event that takes place during spring presents different sports from parasailing, hang-gliding, paragliding, gliding, and flight with motor vehicles. According

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Sights & events

WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL HELSINKI 2012In 2012 Helsinki will be the World Design Capi-tal together with Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The theme of the World Design Capital is Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life.

Every second year a city is appointed as the World Design Capital. The selected city exploits exceptionally well the design in its cultural, so-cial and economic development. The World De-sign Capital nomination is granted by the ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and IDA (International Design Alliance).

AN OPEN CITY Cities belong to their inhabit-ants. Design Capital offers means to participate in the improvement of our environment and de-velopment of our cities. In an open city the peo-ple listen to the city and the city listens to its people.

GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY Design is an inter-national language. With design we can improve the everyday life of people across the limits of countries, languages and political borders. In the future, thinking of design will be playing an even more significant role as the instigator and bearer of a change by sustainable development.

ROOTS OF THE NEW GROTH We want to ex-tend the meaning of the word “design”. Design can be an ergonomic coffee mug or a new type of queuing in a health centre. Design at its best consists of functional things. We believe that design also helps enterprises to grow, as in the future new jobs will be created through creativ-ity and innovation.

MUOTOHUOLTAMO Design Stop (Muoto-huoltamo) is the Design Capital’s meeting place which brings visibility to the local, national and international designers. In the Fashion Garage everyone can examine and participate in the Design Capital’s activities.

In Lahti the program of the Design Capital in-cludes design education and training as well as projects regarding the city centre development and industrial design. During this year we will bring attention to the local design and design-ers in the Fashion Garage and in several nation-al and international events.

Water organThe only musical fountain in the Nordic countries is at Pikku-Vesijärvi pond close to the Passenger Harbour. The water organ combines water, lights and music into a delightful symphony that is at its best during the dark evenings of the autumn and winter. Energy company Lahti Energia built the water organ in 1997 to celebrate its 90th an-niversary.

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Restaurants & cafés

TIME FOR COFFEEThe Lahti region's café culture has

become more lively lately due to

several new cafés. People go to

cafés to spend time, meet friends

and enjoy the delicacies of local

bakeries. There is an extensive se-

lection of modern and traditional

cafés in downtown Lahti.

World’s cleanest bottled mineral water comes from this area. The Vellamo water comes from Viikinäinen bore well close to Heinola. Accord-ing to the Geological Survey of Finland, 15–30% of the water dates back to the ice age or even farther back. This means that the Vellamo water is in average 5,000 to 8,000 years old.

GUIDE HINT

Established in 1957, SINUHE’s oldest café that is still located in the place in which it was estab-lished in Mariankatu. The café named after Mika Waltari’s novel the Egyptian (Sinuhe egyptiläi nen in Finnish) is still – more than half a century later – one of the cornerstones of Lahti’s café culture. Sinuhe Mariankatu offers its customers tradition-al fresh baked goods directly from the oven and freshly ground coffee.

OSKARIN PIHA – GALLERY CAFÉ OSKARIN PIHA is located in downtown Lahti, in the second to last wooden building still standing in the downtown area. At Oskarin Piha, you can have good cof-fee and delicious pastries, and also admire hand-icrafts. You can buy wonderful handicraft at Os-karin Piha.

KAAPINLÄHTEEN KIEVARI is an excellent place to have a cup of coffee or a great dinner. The inn is decorated with old rustic furniture and items. A wonderful natural stone fireplace offers a unique feeling. In addition to a log main build-ing, the yard includes a sauna, a chimneyless sau-na and a couple of outbuildings. There are 15 horses at Kaapinlähteen kievari.

A CUP OF COFFEE AT THE HARBOUR There is a café full of feeling and history in the old harbor master’s building in the Lahti Passenger Harbour. There is always freshly baked pastries and fresh coffee. Many people decide to visit the café on their Sunday walks because of the city’s larg-est cinnamon buns. Fresh pies, cakes and oth-er home-made pastries also lure passers-by in-to the café.

KEHRÄÄMÖ KAHVILA is situated in the 100-years-old Kehräämö, in the centre of Ori-mattila. In addition to baked goods and tradi-tional café products, one can also have lunch in the café. A tasty home lunch is served eve-ry workday on the buffet table. The café bakes fresh buns and doughnuts every morning.

CAFÉ HEILA Local restaurant aims to use raw materials that are produced/grown/prepared as close by as possible. In addition to cakes, pas-tries, fresh buns and salty delicacies, one can also order special coffee from the café. Thanks to its a la cartè menu, Café Heila has achieved the fame of a gourmet restaurant. Or how would you like some wild duck in pastry or reindeer fawn liver?

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | GUIDE RECOMMENDS

Skiing is funSkiing builds up fitness more effectively than any other form of exercise. It does not require great power or iron-like strength. So, put your skis on and go to your local track to slide and enjoy the beautiful scenery. At the same time, you can test which style of cross-country skiing suits you best- classical or skating.

GUIDE

Lahti, itself, possesses almost 170 km of both lit and unlit ski trails over varying terrain.

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Water & nature

WINTER SPORTSThanks to the Salpausselkä

ridges, the Lahti region enjoys

good winters. You can ski, skate,

snowshoe or just sit by a fire to

enjoy the quiet, snowy woods.

ICE SWIMMING WILL KEEP YOU ALERT ALL DAY LONG There are three places in Lahti where you can dip into an icy lake: at Mukkula, Mytäjäin-en and Joutjärvi. There are fixed and heated dressing rooms in Joutjärvi and Mytäjäinen, and a movable “dressing room barrack” is brought to Mukkula when the swimming season starts. You can get a key to the Mukkula, Mytäjäinen and Jou-tjärvi dressing rooms from ice swimmers’ associa-tion Lahden Avantouimarit ry.

SKIING FUN Forward, even if it snows like there is no tomorrow! This old Finnish saying is espe-cially well suited for the Lahti region. There are almost 170 kilometres of lighted and unlighted skiing tracks in Lahti alone, of which around 145 kilometres are part of the Salpausselkä ridge track network.

You can start skiing on the tracks used in the Finlandia Skiing Event and the Salpausselkä Ski Games right from the yard of Messilä Manor. There are a total of 70 kilometres of uninterrupt-ed tracks, of which around 20 kilometres are light-ed. You can take a leisurely skiing trip to Pirunpesä (the Devil’s Nest), for example. There is a place to build a fire close to the natural formation.

Page 39: Lahti Guide 2011

www.lahtiguide.fi 39

ROASTING SAUSAGES AT A LEAN-TO There are several lean-tos in the Lahti region. You can ski or walk there to have a packed lunch or make soot pot coffee, if you like.

The lean-tos are open to anyone who abides by the Finnish everyman’s rights. All those who use a lean-to must ensure that the surround-ings stay clean.

FASCINATING SLALOM Slalom, Telemark ski-ing, snowboarding and traditional cross-coun-try skiing – Messilä with its ten slopes and several snow events is the largest and most popular skiing centre in southern Finland. You can also drop by one of Messilä’s restaurants to have a cup of hot chocolate or a tasty lunch.

SNOWMOBILING, SNOWSHOEING...The versatile terrain of Messilä offers the opportu-nity to practice many other sports apart from slalom – ranging from ice fishing to trek skat-ing. Camping Messilä on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi is the meeting point for snowmobil-ers in the wintertime. A snowmobile route of a little over 200 kilometres, maintained by snow-mobiling association Päijät-Hämeen Moot-

torikelkkailijat ry, starts at the Messilä shore. In addition to the snowmobiling route, the ar-

ea includes wonderful skiing routes. There are around sixty kilometres of regularly maintained skiing tracks. If you do not consider that suffi-cient, you can always ski on the ice of the lake when the late winter sun shines. A suitable trip for a Sunday afternoon starts at the Messilä Camping shore from where you can ski to Enon-saari Island, enjoy the wintry nature and roast some sausages at a lean-to.

If you do not like skiing, you can also enjoy the scenery on snowshoes. Just put an auger in-to your backpack, and you can catch your lunch from the lake yourself!

ICE FISHING Lake Vesijärvi and Lake Päijänne are filled of fish. Here one should definitely try fishing even in winter. Burbot is a delicacy espe-cially in late winter. And if you get really lucky, the burbot will be full of fish roe. Then you should just cook some blinis and start the feast. Take good supplies with you as food enjoyed in nature tastes the best.

For ice fishing there is no need for a fishing licence.

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Water & nature

When visiting the harbour, you should also eat at one of the restaurants. In addition to Restaurant Casseli there are several restaurant ships.

If you are interested in culture, a concert at the Si-belius Hall is a must. You can study local handicrafts at Handicraft Store Ulpukka or the ProPuu Gallery which includes monthly changing exhibitions.

RESTAURANT CASSELI – Casseli is a high-class di-ning restaurant right next to the Sibelius Hall. The restaurant offers a great view of Lake Vesijärvi. The menu and matching wine list are renewed three times per year.

SCENT OF COFFEE ALL YEAR ROUND – The old storehouse buildings at the Passenger Harbour house several nice cafés. You can try the home-baked tasty delicacies of Café Kariranta in the old train station building. Café Kariranta’s famous cinna-mon buns are guaranteed to be the largest in Lahti. The harbour cafés are open all year round.

WOOD ARCHITECTURE at Vesijärvi Passenger Har-bour – The surroundings of the Lahti Passenger Har-bour is a Mecca for wood architecture enthusiasts. A complete wood arc hitecture park is being con-

structed close to the Sibelius Hall. The latest site is Culture Café Piano Pavillion right at the shoreline. The harbour area also includes two other sites of the themed park: a lighted bus stop designed by Japa-nese Kengo Kuma and a wooden spiral designed by Australian Richard Leplastier.

A panoramic resting platform has been designed to the Kariniemi hill by the Swiss Peter Zumthor. The object is supposed to be completed during 2011.

SIBELIUS HALL – The window’s of Lahti’s pride, the flagship of modern Finnish wood construction, Con-gress and Concert Centre Sibelius Hall sparkle right next to Lake Vesijärvi. The heart of the house, the tall Forest Hall, combines the large music hall build-ing to the Carpentry Factory dating back to the be-ginning of the 20th century. The renovated lakeside hall hou ses a pleasant restaurant. You can study the architecture of Sibelius Hall on guided house tours available on order.

PIANO PAVILION – The flagship of the wood archi-tecture park, Café-Restaurant Piano Pavilion was de-signed by architect Gert Wingårdh. The stunningly beautiful café manufactured from wood and glass is partially on top of the lake at the Lahti Passenger

Harbour. Piano Pavilion’s doors are open daily dur-ing the summer, starting on May 1st.

WOOD DESIGN AT PROPUU – ProPuu Associa-tion of Lahti was established in 1997. It is a guild and meeting place for cabinet makers, designers and other wood sector professionals. ProPuu is located in Tikkula, a former matchstick factory at the Lah-ti Passenger Harbour. The wonderful building hous-es the association’s gallery, store, offices, designers’ workspaces and a carpenter’s shop.

LANU SCULPTURE PARK – The sculpture park of artist and professor Olavi Lanu is located within a walking distance from the Passenger Harbour in the Kariniemi Park. Twelve human figures manufactured from reinforced concrete have been placed in the wonderful lakeside nature.

THE WATER ORGAN is a musical fountain built by energy company Lahti Energia in 1997 next to pond Pikku-Vesijärvi close to the Passenger Harbour. Wa-ter, lights and music are combined into a delightful symphony that is at its best during the dark evenings of the autumn and winter. Shows are also available on order.

In addition to the Family Park, the central park area includes a bowling alley, a roller skating track, a Frisbee golf area, a dog park, a training ice rink, a circus field, a miniature golf field and a skating park of 1,500 square metres. Laune Central Park won the tenth place in a competition where people voted for the Top 10 beautiful locations in Päijät-Häme in 2008.

THE FAMILY PARK at Kaarikatu 26 is a place for the entire family, with experiences both outdoors and indoors. The park includes slides, climbing equip-ment, a traffic town, cottages for hobbies and a for-tress. In the wintertime, there are frozen slides and an ice-skating rink in the Family Park. There is easy access to skiing tracks from the park. 100,000 peo-ple visit the Family Park every year. Entrance free of charge.

SKATING AND ROLLERBLADING The Laune Skat-ing Park was designed by professional skater Tom Stankevitz, who has also had international fame. The versatile staircases, ramps and slides of the park have been praised by local skaters. There is a 230-metre roller skating track going around the Skating Park. The track meets all international re-quirements.

THE CITY’S BEST SLIDE The longest and wildest slide of Lahti is right next to the event field. The City of Lahti builds a five metres long bidirection-al slide for the children each winter. Depending on how much snow there is, the slide is open from De-cember until March.

PARKOUR IN A PARK Lahti has invested in parkour by constructing a parkour park to Lau-no. The park contains climbing frames and var-ious obstacles that can be used for practicing.Parkour is a manoeuvring discipline, originat-ing from the suburbs of Paris, which is becom-ing more and more popular amongst the youth. The purpose is to move by climbing, jumping and leaping through the environment by using walls, rails, and other supporting structures. You can find more information about the activ-ity at www.dash.fi

The Laune Central Park of more than ten hec-tares has been constructed close to the en-trance to the city on the fields of Laune. The construction was started a little less than thir-ty years ago when the City Council decided in its 75th anniversary meeting to build an out-door living room for children and youth of Lah-ti. The selected place is a bottom of a lake that dried out 11,000 years ago close to the down-town area.

EVENTS FOR CHILDRENSKIING FUN! The Ski Museum located in the Sports Centre at the foot of the three magnif-icent ski jumps offers wintry activities indoors. In addition to versatile exhibitions, the museum includes a popular section, the activity section where children can try their wings in a safe way in a ski jumping simulator, for example. The climbers do not use any safety harnesses; instead, safety is ensured by placing thick padding underneath the wall. Wall climbing is a sport suitable for children and adults alike. If you have not climbed before, an instructor will show you the ropes.

GUIDE INFOHEINOLA BIRD SANCTUARY is open all year round at A.F. Aironkatu 3, Heinola. The sanctuary is Heinola’s most popular tourist attraction. Eight bird houses and Harjulam-pi pond create an unparalleled bird paradise in Finland. The houses’ inhabitants include large talking parrots, cockatoos, lories, ja-cos, amazons, peacocks and different kinds of pet fowl. All the Finnish birds are injured birds that cannot be released back into the wild because of the nature of their injury.

HORSE RIDING The Lahti area also has beau-tiful landscapes for horse riding. The Stable of Messilä Manor, among others, organises horse riding courses for riders of all levels and ag-es year-round. In addition to traditional riding, in the Lahti area you can also enjoy riding treks on Icelandic horses. The treks are suitable both for horse riders and for those who are interested in hiking in the wild. Icelandic horses with their small size and strength are excellent for cross-country riding.

Province of wellbeing and eventsThe strengths of the Lahti region include its location, the nature and long traditions in arranging events. Lately, well-being tourism has become an important sector in addition to regular tourism – there are more elderly people in Fin-land and they have time to invest in themselves. The term wellbeing tourism includes a variety of businesses from Tallukka Wellbeing Centre to Pajulahti Sports Centre, Vi-erumäki Sports Academy, Messilä Manor, Hotel Kumpeli and a number of small day spa and yoga businesses not to forget the region’s cultural offerings and the opportunities provided by nature.

GUIDE WINTER 2011-2012 | Shopping

SHOPPINGYou should also reserve time for

shopping in between sightsee-

ing and delicious eating. Lahti

and the Lahti region are a true

paradise for shoppers offering

tailor-made suits, Italian style,

American classics and original

collections by Finnish design-

ers. There are plenty of stores to

choose from both in Lahti and in

the surrounding municipalities

for those interested in interior

decoration.

FACTORY OUTLET CENTRE You can do afford-able shopping in several factory outlets in the Lahti region. Fashion is available at the Naist-en Pukutehdas, and children’s wear is on sale at Zalekua in Hollola, Finnkarelia factory out-let in Orimattila and Luhta in Lahti and Nasto-la. If you like candles, you should stop by at the factory outlet of Maria Drockila in Orimattila or the Finnmari store in Hollola. You can get a pair of new shoes from the Montra outlet, and Tep-sut in Hollola offers Finnish footwear for the first steps of your children. Don’t forget E75 Outlet centre north of Heinola!

MALLS AND SHOPPING STREETS Mall Trio in downtown Lahti includes more than a hundred speciality stores, and other downtown stores are within a walking distance from the mall. A whole new mall, Valo, was opened in early 2011. It includes many interesting stores as well.

The newest commercial centre of Lahti, Ka-risma, will be opened for Christmas. Karisma of-fers a balanced combination of clothing, sports, specialty shops and services, bringing to the same context the daily selection of a large hy-permarket.

GUIDE INFORapala’s legendary lure was created in Päi-jät-Häme in 1936. Lauri Rapala studied fish when fishing for baits at Lake Päijänne and found the secret of the Rapala lures – their swimming motion. The first wobblers were manufactured using a knife, a file and sand-paper. Cheese packages and candy wrap-pers were used as the tin foil for the sides. The back side was painted black and the belly side white. Shiny varnish was replaced with photo negatives which Lauri washed and melted on top of the wobblers. Once the hooks were attached, the first Rapala lures were finished.

FURNISHING TREASURES There are several in-terior decoration stores in the Lahti region that are worth visiting, such as the legendary Lau-ran kauppa in Vääksy and Toivo & Vallu in Au-ttoinen, Padasjoki. Orimattila offers the charm-ing Puuterivilla and Hollola the Pian Makasiini – all full of surprises.

TAX FREE Citizens from outside of the EU are en-titled to Tax-free shopping in Finland in the con-dition that the purchases are made in a Tax-free eligible store and the sum of purchases is at least 40 Euros. When the traveller leaves the EU area, he/she will receive the product’s purchase tax, which is, depending on the product, 16 percent at the most. Read more at www.global-blue.com

CHARM OF SMALL BOUTIQUES There is a cluster of small fashion boutiques in downtown Lahti. The downtown boutiques offer everything from global top brands to tailor-made suits. Most of the boutiques sell clothes and also matching shoes, bags and accessories. They are well worth a visit!

MUSEUM SHOPS are excellent for buying per-sonal gifts for minor or major occasions. Museum shops in Lahti are located at the Historical Muse-um, the Ski Museum, the Radio and TV Museum and the Art Museum.
