Hello Everyone,

Wow, time flies - it is already August! I am sad to report that our picnic, which is usually our August meeting has been cancelled. With Kitsap County currently stuck in Phase 2, we can’t gather in a large group even outdoors. We looked at alternatives and took a poll at the July meeting and it was pretty clear that most would not be comfortable attending the picnic.

Since we are not having a picnic, I have been asked to schedule another Show and Tell Zoom meeting for August. It will be when our picnic is normally held – August 25th at 6 pm via Zoom. Please send your pictures to me at [email protected] and I will include them in the presentation. Each quilter that submits a picture is encouraged to tell us about your quilt as it is presented on the screen. If you have an unquilted top you love, feel free to show it! We will not hold the small groups or a third Saturday workshop in August. The church is still not availa-ble for our use. With Phase 3 of the reopening plan on pause for now, we will have to wait and see when we can get together in person.

We held a couple of Virtual Sew-ins in July thanks to Amy Steed! We are working on plans for future virtual events and are open to suggestions. In September we will have a virtual presentation and a vir-tual workshop with Ann Shaw. I am pretty excited.

We are recruiting for members to volunteer for various guild leadership roles. It has been challenging to seek volunteers without our face to face meetings. Please consider volunteering - some of the guild’s business and activities continue to be ongoing during this shutdown and some will need some-one to step up and be ready once activities resume. The new year for officers begins in September.

Quilt Show: There are still some key positions that need to be filled for the Quilt Show. These are Rib-bons and Silent Auction. We have one volunteer for the Silent Auction and need a couple more volun-teers. Consider doing these jobs as a team. Last year we had a team of three that put together a fun and fabulous Silent Auction. Contact Mary Jo Brisbon to volunteer!

Committee Chairs: There is currently one committee chair opening for the coming year - Raffle Quilt Ticket Sales. Please contact Barbara Martin or Kathy Beach to volunteer.

Happy Quilting - please stay healthy and safe!

The Kitsap Quilters held its July membership meeting virtually via Zoom. Thirty-four members attended and actively participated in the many decisions we face as a guild in the time of this pandemic. Barbara Martin called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. The February 2020 minutes were read and approved by acclamation. Treasurer, Sarah Lewis reported our June balances: $24,396.54 in checking and $5924.64 in savings. Elections were conducted virtually. The slate of officers for the 2020-21 Board of directors was presented, voted on and accepted. Kathy Beach and Tanya Duncan summarized what each guild committee will accept as donations. The list has been posted on our website as a guide to those with items to donate. Remember, it is a ‘living document’ and can be adjusted as needed. Barb Martin reviewed the changes we have faced given the shutdown due to COVID 19. She is excited that we have the opportunity to present virtual speakers and demonstrations. She has scheduled virtual workshops for September, October, and November. Amy Steed reviewed the virtual sew-ins she organized. She received positive feedback from the four that attended the two sessions. Amy suggested we set up regularly scheduled sew-ins with a variety of hosts. Several members at the meeting volunteered to serve on a committee to organize this new adventure! The 2021 Raffle Quilt presents some issues because we can only sell tickets in person. The Board recommended we postpone the drawing until 2022. We will contact the Gambling Commission to see if this is possible. Mary Jo Brisbon reported on the Quilt Show. A poll of the members will be done before a final decision is made regarding the 2021 Quilt Show. Val Martinson reported on the Fall Retreat. The consensus of the members present was to postpone the retreat until next year. Val will email all the members to poll them for their opinion. Barb Martin announced that Paula Wood will serve as the new Membership Chair. Lynn Thorton will be available to mentor her as the membership drive begins in August. Our membership drive will be conducted by mail until we can resume meetings. Carol Raymond polled the members present and a majority there voted to cancel the August Picnic. Kudos to Jeanette Schanbeck for coordinating and making the Pizza Box Exchange a resounding success. Stay tuned for the final swap coming soon. Our Charity Quilts projects have been slowed due to the state pandemic response. We are looking at setting a time to do a Drive Through Event at the church parking lot to turn in completed quilts.

And the Grand Finale was the Show and Tell! Members who emailed pictures of their latest shared their quilts to all who attended. Meeting was adjourned at 8:47pm.

Stitches In Time—Nancy Parrott (Historian)

Can you believe it is already August? Or 2020, for that matter. Time seems so fluid as I get older. Just yesterday the year 2000 was approaching, and we were worried about Y2K. I think I could pass a lie detector test, swearing that Y2K could not have been 20 years ago. Reminiscing about what was happening in my life back then, curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to consult the newsletter archives once again to see what the guild was up to at the turn of the century. The first thing of interest was that meetings were held at St. Charles Episcopal Church, the quilt show at Poulsbo Jr. High and the August potluck at Island Lake Park. Change is good. It keeps us flexible. Dues were $12/yr. and 5 days in a single room at fall retreat was $180. Well, growth is inevitable. Linda Gunby turned the presidency over to Warrna Lanning in September. Lillian Asher was running the challenge quilt and Margaret Mathisson was in charge of tickets for the raffle quilt. Aren’t they both doing those same jobs right now? Well, consistency is good, too. In December, 1999, a survey went out to all guild members asking what they expected from being in a guild. Most popular answer? To grow and share their skills in a smaller community than monthly meetings. Small groups! That sounds very familiar! Covid has altered the expression of that desire in recent months, but Amy Steed is keeping it alive by offering to co-ordinate small Zoom meetings. Not even a pandemic can defeat us. Thank you, Amy, for offering this vital option which is still so important to our members. Congratulations went out to Val Martinson and Dixie Wright who had quilts accepted by the American Quilt Society for inclusion in the Paducah Quilt Show. What an honor. Perhaps some of the award-winning techniques they used were learned through guild speakers? The October 2000 speaker was Joen Wolfrom and the November speaker, Margaret Miller. Both names are familiar to me because both are still active quilters. I was so looking forward to taking Joen’s eight-part class at Quilted Strait this year. Maybe next year- hint, hint, Kris. And I have had the privilege of getting to know Margaret Miller as a friend. I mentioned her during a group discussion recently and Ann Trujillo and Jaxine Andersen were both able to recall the colors they chose when attending her memorable class on Strips That Sizzle. Margaret may have retired from teaching, but she is as-active-as-ever and an avid supporter of our Cuddles Program. Reading about our speakers made me wonder about who the big names of quilting were in 2000. Oddly enough, this information was not easy to come by, but a bit of sleuthing lead to non-surprising results. Eleanor Burns and Fons and Porter came up right away. Perhaps that is why all three have been inducted into the Quilter’s Hall of Fame. Nancy Zieman, Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, popped up next. Twenty years later they are all still common names in the quilt world, despite the passing of Nancy Zieman in 2017. Having TV shows undoubtedly had much to do with their popularity. In 2000, Carol Bryer Fallert Gentry was selected as one of the 30 most influential quilt makers of the world and also created Corona #2: Solar Eclipse, one of the 100 Most Important Quilts of the 20th Century. She is still creating award-winning quilts. She lives in Port Townsend and periodically has open houses. If you ever have the opportunity to attend, do so. The art in her house is amazing. Kaffe Fassett was also well-known, but not yet a household name as a quilter, being more active in the knitting world back then. With so many personalities the same, what is different in the 2020 quilting world? Three thing that seem different to me are the Modern Quilt Movement, precuts and home-use longarms. The Modern Movement took hold in 2005 and has produced many new celebrities who are known via social media rather than TV. Tula Pink, Krista Moser and our own Allison Harris come to mind as contemporary quilters. Precuts have spawned a new generation of pattern designers and entrepreneurs. Jordan Fabrics in Grants Pass, OR and Missouri Star Quilt Company are examples of businesses capitalizing on precuts. YouTube is a great source for watching piecing videos produced by these two companies, and also longarm videos. Angela Walters and Natalia Bonner are only a click away when you want inspiration on how to quilt that stack of finished project on your longarm. Hmmm? I wonder if one way to convince ourselves that it is 2020 is to count our UFOs!

Pizza Box Exchange—Jeanette Schanbeck

Special Thank You to Everyone. This has been fun and exciting to participate in and it's all because of each and everyone of you. Thank you for making this fun project a success during these tough times, Corvid. This is because of all of you make this happen each and every month. Seeing all the boxes coming in and out, seeing what's inside, and what you have been able to put together, with less and less fabric but more finished blocks inside.

Now we are coming to the end with only few months left, before you get to see your Pizza Box back. So lets change a few things, get the energy going again.

Starting at the end of August during our routine swap, if you are on blue team, you will receive a team members box from a different color, and so on with all the team colors. This way you can see other peoples blocks from different teams. Adding twist maybe little creativity to the mix. You have heard of some of the other boxes being passed, now you can see what the talk is all about. Have fun with this ladies, enjoy, for finale swap is just around the corner.

Fall Retreat— Val Martinson, Mary Polensky, Norma Tipton, Donna Gearns

Library—Cheryl McCurdy & Leanne Brooling

Fall retreat 2020 has been postponed until fall of 2021. It was voted on at the July 28th meeting and also

an email blast was sent out several days after that to answer questions on a poll given by the fall retreat

planners who are Val Martinson, Mary Polensky, Norma Tipton, and Donna Gearns. 93% of the 54 who

voted agreed to postpone retreat until fall of 2021. Chuck Kraining, Executive Director of Seabeck was

contacted July 20th by the fall retreat committee to gather information about retreat. He explained options

that he was giving to all groups. We were told that we can postpone fall retreat until 2021 and not lose our

deposit if that is what the guild decides to do. We asked him to apply the deposit next year’s fall retreat

(Nov 10th-Nov 14th, 2021) if the guild voted to have it postponed. He could not answer specific

questions at this time because it depends on the phase we are in and Seabeck following county, state

and Federal guidelines. Under normal circumstances we sign up for fall retreat at the Sept meeting. It was

decided by the board at the last board meeting that a poll be given to guild members so a decision could

be made.

Spring retreat planners, Nicky North and Fran Pilato, will address their March spring retreat later as it

depends on the guidelines at that time.

Since August is normally our annual picnic, we wouldn't be having the Library open. We do have a big stack

of new books we want to introduce to everyone, but first, we need to inventory the current books and delete

quite a few of them. The deleted books will be for sale at our annual Quilt Show, which we do hope the Guild

will be able to have next February.

Christmas Block Exchange—Barb Seitz

Will it happen? Yes indeed! The rules are the same. Delivery, well that’s subject to change since we aren’t meeting in person any time soon. Watch your newsletter for announcements about hand-off dates or mailing options. Make 15 blocks to exchange plus one for yourself.

Blocks must be 6-1/2” square

No blocks on point

No 4-patch or 9-patch blocks

No machine embroidered blocks

No synthetic fabrics

Flannel, felt or wool may only be used for sewn-on embellishments

Stitch around fusible appliques Be sure to put your name on a back seam allowance of all 15 exchange blocks Blocks that don’t meet the

criteria will be returned to the maker. Put your blocks in a quart size ziplock bag with your name on it. I’ll

collect blocks until the November meeting date and return blocks to you by the December meeting

date. Call or email me if you have any questions. Then get started on making your fun Christmas blocks

early. Barbara Seitz 206-795-7026 [email protected]
