NANAIMO, B.C.: Kia likes to use as its slogan “The Power To Surprise.”

Well, now that can be restated as “The Electric Power To Surprise” with the 2011 Optima Hybrid.

converted to electric power from power-robbing belts was done such as the Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system that instantly provides assistive torque only when needed during steering maneuvers.

The Optima Hybrid also features an electrically driven air conditioning

compressor so that climate control can be maintained in the cabin even when the engine is off. As with the electric power steering system, the electrically driven air conditioning compressor reduces the overall load on the powertrain, cutting fuel consumption; allowing for more precise, on-demand, control.

Another interesting feature, in addition to aerodynamic measures such as underbody drag reduction, is an

active air flap at the radiator that closes at 100 km/h to stop air from building up inside the engine bay.

The drag coefficient resulting from all these efforts is just 0.26.

While the Optima Hybrid considered mid-size, it’s actually closer to full-size. It’s also very handsome with the eye-catching lines penned by award-winning chief designer Peter Schreyer.

One thing I hadn’t noticed before is a scallop along the top of the windshield

that mimics that of the upper part of the front grille. That’s attention to detail.

There are two versions of the car starting at $30,595 for the Hybrid and $35,495 or the Hybrid Premium which, as Kia says, comes “with every possible option.”

On the left side of the instrument panel, the tachometer has been replaced by a round energy display called the Eco Guide. It is marvelously

simple with a needle showing when the car is on battery or engine power or a combination of both.

On the lower left spoke of the steering wheel is a little green button marked “Eco.” The Optima Hybrid operates in the energy conservation mode at all times unless the driver turns the Eco mode off.

This provides more power for sporty motoring and does make a noticeable difference in the driving characteristics of the car.

Highway 4, which runs from Nanaimo where the press launch was held and Tofino on the other side of Vancouver Island, is mountainous terrain with some steep uphill sections and sinuous twisty roads hacked into the sides of granite rock.

Passing in Eco mode was leisurely at best. With Eco off, the Hybrid’s unfettered engine and motor really dug in.

The electric steering was positive if a bit heavy at slower speeds but far better than the first generation that were slow to react and felt dead on centre. The six-speed automatic has adaptive learning and is able to adjust itself to suit the driving style of the person behind the wheel.

On the outward part of the drive I got the fuel consumption down from 7.4L/100 km at start to as low at 6.6L/100 km at one point. That changed dramatically back to 7.3L/100 km with the Eco off through the mountains. On flat ground and driving with a light right foot getting down to around 6L/100 km in real world driving is definitely possible.

I drove the “base” version but I thought I was in the Premium because it was that well-equipped, including (to mention just a few) trip computer, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Homelink and compass, heated front seats, memory driver’s seat, power driver and passenger seat, power lumbar driver seat, impact-sensing door unlock, fully automatic climate control (dual zone), rear climate ventilation, cooling glove box, and the UVO Audio Infotainment developed with Microsoft that is probably the most advanced system of its type in the world at this time.

When it comes to safety, the Optima Hybrid leaves nothing out with six airbags, anti-whiplash front active headrests, four-wheel antilock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, a Traction Control System, a Brake Assist System and Hill Assist Control all being standard.

This is a very enjoyable car to drive and, frankly, I almost forgot it was hybrid because of the way it felt and handled. There are more and more hybrids on the road but this is the best I’ve driven to date.

The interior of the Kia Optima Hybrid is lavishly equipped, including a standard UVO infotainment system developed in conjunction with Microsoft.

The 1950 Triumph Mayflower that has been a consistent star at Vancouver car shows over the past year came back to where it started at last month’s KMS Tools classic car show.

The car spent eight years stuck on the wall at the company’s headquarters in Coquitlam. KMS owner Stan Pridham and staff used it to demonstrate body work products and techniques. It was in dire need of a body restoration and that seemed like a good start.

In 1998, KMS had a booth at a Vancouver classic car auction when company founder Pridham spotted the car in the lineup for the auction block. “It was really cool because it looked like a mini Rolls Royce,” he recalls. He got a bidder’s card and by the end of the auction, the Mayflower was his.

“I decided to drive it home and was going along Broadway nearing Commercial when it started to backfire and sputter.” He limped through the intersection, drifted into a Safeway parking lot and called a tow truck.

The car ended up at his headquarters and was hoisted up by forklift out of the way on the palette rack against the wall. That’s how the Mayflower became a wallflower.

During this time Triumph enthusiasts Larry and Linda Spouler started looking for a Mayflower after Linda expressed interest in the “cute little car that is just my size” when she saw one at a show in Olympia, Wa.

The Spoulers became regulars at the annual KMS classic car show and saw the Mayflower hanging on the wall. When it became surplus to the needs of KMS, there was a “lift off ” and the Spoulers brought their “Lady Mayflower” home.

That launched a total frame-off restoration with Larry Spouler completely disassembling the car and meticulously restoring every mechanical part. “In the three years it took to put this car back on the road, she needed a lot of help from a great many people,” Larry Spouler says. He credits two great friends, machinist Barrie Puffer and body and paint specialist Andy Twarog, as instrumental in completing the restoration.

“Without these two talented individuals, the Lady Mayflower would still be a wallflower,” he says. “She wouldn’t be able to dance and she

wouldn’t have the new make-over to be seen in public.”

Linda Spouler’s first time in the driver’s seat came one early weekend morning when Larry and his son pushed the rolling body two kilometres down a main road in Richmond to the paint shop.

Standard Motors of Britain introduced the prototype 38 horsepower 1.25 litre Mayflower in the fall of 1949 as both a domestic and export model. The ‘razor edge’ styling of the four-passenger car was a sensation when it was introduced at the London Motor Show.

The first production Mayflower rolled off the line on June 30, 1950. When production ended in July 1953, Fischer and Ludlow had built 35,000 Mayflowers. Thousands of the cars were sent to Canada. The Mayflower was tested with a top speed of 62 miles per hour and delivered up to 35 miles per gallon for economical motoring.

The Triumph Mayflower was designed to provide luxury car looks and features at affordable prices. It was priced at 505 pounds. By comparison, a Morris Minor sold for just 382 pounds. Possibly to touch the patriotic side of

potential American buyers, the new Triumph Mayflower featured a radiator ornament depicting the Mayflower ship that brought the Pilgrims to Cape Cod in 1620.

The Spoulers believe their car was sold new in Nova Scotia before going coast to coast to take up residence in North Vancouver with a lady owner who bought it because she had been driven to school in a similar car.

Diminutive Linda Spouler loves driving the Triumph Mayflower that was painstakingly and lovingly restored by her husband and friends. During the restoration, the original flathead four cylinder engine was discarded in favour of a much more powerful 1300 cc Triumph Spitfire engine coupled to the original column shifted three speed manual transmission.

To embellish the look of their “watch charm Rolls Royce,” the Spoulers have added luxury touches including a fold-out rear seat picnic tray and a full leather interior. With its miniature Royal bearing, the restored Triumph Mayflower is no longer a wallflower. It was only fitting that the small regal classic was displayed front and centre at the 2011 KMS Tools’ car show.

Driver of the Week:

Practical, but sporty, Tim King’s 2002 Nissan X-Terra can hold everything from ball gear and golf clubs to a load of groceries.

What does it say about its owner? “That I’m loud, fun-loving and a bit of a thrill-seeker,” King quips.

Appreciating its bold colour and versatility, the X-Terra “says a lot without having to say anything. It just gets noticed, and it knows it too.

“X-Terra owners should be proud of their choice. It’s been a great vehicle for the 9+ years I’ve owned it. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if only my kids were smaller!”

Founded in 1957 by a group of mostly 16 to 18 year olds with a passion for fast and cool rides, Century Toppers is inviting all current and past members to attend their Reunion Picnic.

Good food, good music and old friends still driving cool hot rods and custom cars will make for a fun, family-oriented day, orgamizers say. Over the years the cars may have become more sophisticated and the paint fancier but the one constant is the passion for cars, the camaraderie and the sharing of knowledge that still drives this vibrant and growing group of hot rodders.

Former members are invited to contact the club and reserve a spot at the picnic – if they still own a cool rod then drive it over for the informal show and shine. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided by Francelli’s.Where: Beaver Lake Park

The Fiat 500 has won the Compasso d’Oro ADI (ADI Golden Compass), Europe’s oldest and most prestigious design award.

With this prestigious acknowledgement, the Fiat 500 continues to attract attention, confirming its standing as representing the best of Made in Italy by combining an innovative and original design with the most advanced technology in the field of engines, safety and on-board comfort.

Additionally, with its prestigious five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating and the 40 international awards it has won to date, the Fiat 500 has proved since its launch in July 2007 that it is not merely a super-compact city car, but an authentic platform upon which Fiat Automobiles is building a whole family of cars with technology and attention to detail worthy of a higher category.

Now at its 12th edition, it is the second time that the Compasso d’Oro ADI award has been given to a Fiat model.

In 2004 it was the new Fiat Panda that won the coveted recognition, proof that both models – two icons of the international automotive industry – express the very best of Italy’s manufacturing capabilities combined with a design that has often anticipated future trends in the automotive world.

Attn. Seniors: Driver re-test and cognitive assessment – the differenceBy Kate Wells

As we age, we begin to recognize the physical changes that take place as we grow older. As a result of these changes, we can also expect to experience some changes in our mental abilities.

For some, the ability to concentrate for long periods may diminish. The ability to see at night can grow weaker and overall awareness of our surroundings can be less sharp. All these things can and do affect our abilities behind the wheel. These behaviours are cognitive and are tested differently from typical driving abilities.

Seniors may be called upon to take an ICBC driver’s re-test to assess diving fitness or may be required to undergo a cognitive assessment. There are significant differences between the two. The ICBC driver re-test is focused on driving skills and the ability to pilot a vehicle safely, and is closer in nature to the driver’s test they would have taken to get their license

originally. While it’s a fairly simple process, B.C.’s test is considered one of most difficult in Canada. The process involves a road test (typically in their car) with an ICBC Driver Examiner and following instructions and directions through a prescribed route.

Drivers are tested on all aspects of safe driving, such as accurately observing speed limits and right-of-way, stopping at intersections, observing school and playground rules, parking, backing and more.

The cognitive assessment is different altogether. It starts with a computer assessment of cognitive abilities. Drivers are required to watch a computer terminal display which shows a variety of visual scenarios.

During each scenario, they either ‘touch’ the screen or click a button to ‘answer/react.’ Each scenario tests a different cognitive ability. For some seniors, this can be challenging and a little frightening if they

have not used a touch screen or had much experience with computers. Based on the results of the computer assessment, an ‘on-road’ assessment may be required. Similar to an ICBC road test, drivers will be accompanied by a qualified assessment officer and will be driving on public roads, however they won’t be driving their own car. A vehicle equipped with a passenger side brake is supplied by the assessment company for insurance and liability reasons. This can be a difficult transition for some.

Perhaps the biggest difference between these two tests is that all skills required for the ICBC test can be improved with practice even as we age, unlike cognitive abilities.

They are simply a product of the aging process and must be recognized as such. Understand that taking driver training and practicing for the ICBC test is very worthwhile, while trying to train for a cognitive test won’t change a thing.

This themed overnight bag is part of collection being offered by Porsche to mark the 41st anniversary of its first outright win a Le Mans.

Metroland MediaCarguide Magazine

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Porsche making its debut at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

It is also 41 years since the highly skilled team of Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood fired their engine on the start line of the gruelling French endurance race.

Their win, a first outright victory for Porsche, set the racing reputation for the brand, and this achievement has been immortalized with the famous racing number 23 in the latest collection from Porsche Design Drivers’ Selection.

All items in the range feature the distinctive ‘Porsche Team Salzburg’ red and white livery from the 917K in which Herrmann and Attwood raced to victory. The Team Salzburg overnight bag and wallet are the perfect accompaniment to any weekend trip away, while the themed mug and glass coaster set continue the celebration at home.

In 1971, Porsche again made history by winning the Le Mans 24hours and also set a distance record – 3,315 miles at an average speed of 138 mph – that stood for nearly 40 years. Fans of Porsche racing history are also able to

purchase a collector’s edition, 1:43 scale model of this 917 KH Le Mans winning car from 1971 as part of the Heritage collection. Available in an exclusive presentation box, the MARTINI liveried model celebrates the 40th anniversary of its triumph this year.

Infiniti has released an image of the Infiniti JX Concept giving the first official glimpse at a new luxury crossover that will join the Infiniti line next spring.

Infiniti also announced the launch of the “Power of 7,” an innovative social media campaign designed to initiate conversation about the JX Concept in advance of its global reveal at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Aug. 18.

The campaign includes a series of seven images that will be distributed exclusively on Facebook every Thursday over the next few weeks.

The Facebook page will include an opportunity to win a trip for two to join Infiniti at the vehicle’s reveal at the Pebble Beach Concours.

“Families don’t have many luxury vehicle options today. The new Infiniti JX will be the seven-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now,”

said Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas. Infiniti will officially debut the production version of the

2013 Infiniti JX, which goes on sale in the spring of 2012, at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November.
