Originally a 1930s two-door Model A Ford, it has been transformed into what is commonly known as a “rat rod,” a custom car that blends the traditional hot rod style with an unfinished raw look as indicated by this particular specimen’s imperfect paint and exposed engine bay. Some rat rod builders exaggerate the look by purposely creating rusty body panels, but Knight said the paint, or what’s left on it, is the same as when it was on the showroom floor. “The body is in such good condition that I just thought, I’m going to leave it as-is,” he says. Sourcing it from a fellow at Qualicum Beach, Knight bought the frame separately from Victoria. One of the car’s many interesting features is its 110-horsepower motor that has previously served more than one function. “The engine’s a 1950 Ford...a flathead V8 that actually came from the Sooke Mill. It was what they call a swifter machine, which pulled the logs across the boom to tie it together.” The engine was rebuilt before Knight got his hands on it. All he’s done is repaint it and add a couple of carburetors and an alternator. The interior is also of interest — it’s been “channelled,” meaning Knight cut out the entire floor of the car and raised it four inches, reattaching it overtop of the frame, making the whole car sit much lower to the ground. He also made some custom aluminum seats, gear shift surround and other bits and pieces. All the work was done in his immaculate garage that would make any gearhead jealous. like a 1940 Ford Delivery, a 1955 Ford Thunderbird and a 1965 Pontiac GTO, to name just a few.

“I build ‘em — that one there took me about three years just to get to where it’s at — and I just get to a point where it’s time for a change so I sell it, and start something else.”

Future plans for the Model A include adding an air cleaner, a new driver-side door and rear fenders.

Knight has also made a pattern for a hood, although he says it will only cover the top of the engine.

Building on the success of several recent special-edition Jeep vehicles, the Jeep brand is introducing its latest models: the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Arctic and Jeep Liberty Arctic.

Available in Liberty, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, the 2012 Arctic models arrive in Canadian showrooms this month.

The rugged, extreme winter conditions of the Arctic are the inspiration for these latest Jeep models.

With winter temperatures that can reach -45°C, and wind speeds that can exceed 160 kilometres per hour, the Arctic is well known as one of the most intense climates on Earth.

Based on the Jeep Wrangler Sahara model, the Arctic’s winter theme is immediately recognizable. Available colours are Winter Chill, Bright Silver, and Bright White. Exterior features include a modular body-colour Freedom Top hardtop and body-colour fender flares, “Arctic” badges on the front fenders, a “Yeti Footprint” decal over part of the driver’s side fender and hood, black hood decal, and Mopar black fuel filler door and tail lamp guards.

Jeep Wrangler Arctic also offers an aggressive Wrangler Rubicon tire and wheel package, with unique semi-gloss black 17-inch wheels adorned with 32-inch tires.

1940 Ford Coupe delivers48 years of cruising pleasure

If you see Brian Carrell and his dog Elliott cruising Vancouver’s North Shore in a 1940 Ford coupe looking like it just dropped out of American Graffitti, Brian and his classic hot rod have earned the role.

He’s owned the car since he was a teenager nearly 50 years ago.

Brian’s father forbade him to buy a car until he finished high school. But an ad in the local newspaper led to the purchase of the primer painted Ford coupe, which he couldn’t resist. It was partly customized with the front lowered and a newer flathead Ford engine.

Brian rented a garage in West Vancouver not far from the family house to store the car. He brought the Ford coupe home the day he finished high school and has been driving it ever since. Legendary Vancouver car customizer and painter Don Campbell worked his magic on the car in the early 1970s, painting it a bright metallic green and adding striped accents.

Brian installed a 327 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 engine for more power coupled to a four speed transmission. His first car show was the 1977 Pacific National Exhibition Motorama Show and his car hasn’t changed a bit since.

Cars stick to Brian Carrell and he sticks to his cars. He’s just completing the full restoration of the 1968 Mustang GT fastback he bought new from North Vancouver’s Dave Buck Ford the summer of 1968.

He had been driving a 1963 Comet S33 convertible which he liked until he spotted a Mustang fastback being sold by Musgrove Ford – one of several cars painted special purple metallic brought in for Easter.

He went to his local Ford dealer and ordered the same car with GT equipment including an S code 390 cubic inch engine with a four barrel carburetor, four speed transmission and positraction rear end. The car cost $4,796 and arrived in just five weeks on July 31, 1968.

“I loved the car and it was really fast,” he recalls of a time when muscle cars ruled the road and horsepower was king. He and wife Janet honeymooned in the purple

Mustang in California. Janet started driving the Mustang to work in Vancouver as Brian drove a company truck to Ideal Distributors, the family pool and spa business.

One day when Janet came out of work to get the car, the Mustang had disappeared. It had been stolen from a parking lot at the Pacific National Exhibition. After a month, the insurance paid out and another car was purchased for Janet to drive to work.

But the Mustang was later discovered in a Richmond parking lot with the driveshaft on the ground and the transmission missing. When the insurance company told Brian he could buy the car back, he put in a bid of $1,000 determined to get his purple Mustang back. But he was outbid by his brother Doug – co-owner of the family business – who paid $100 more.

“I didn’t mind that so much because the car was still in the family,” Brian Carrell recalls. “Doug put a transmission in the car, installed big rear tires and drove the car hard for a few years until he stored it away.”

Years passed and the Mustang was out of sight and out of mind.

Until, that is, Brian Carrell learned his brother needed money to buy a boat. “I asked him what he was going to do with my old Mustang and eventually bought it back,” he says. “It cost me more than I paid for the

car originally.”In the meantime, Brian Carrell had

restored a 1954 Chrysler New Yorker station wagon and built a 1934 Ford hot rod. Five years ago, the way was cleared to get at a full restoration of his purple Mustang. The car is in the final stages of reassembly in the shop at his North Vancouver home. He has done all the work himself except for the paint and upholstery. “I like the challenge of restoring cars,” he says.

The car has been painted the original special order purple metallic colour with the GT ‘C’ stripe on both sides. A new deluxe interior has been installed just the way the car was delivered. The 390 engine and four speed transmission have been rebuilt.

“The car looks better than when it was new,” the proud owner says, recalling the summer day he picked the car up from his local Ford dealer to go cruising 43 years ago.

Brian Carrell has no plans to sell any of his cars – particularly the 1940 Ford coupe he bought when he was still in high school and his first new car, the purple 1968 Mustang GT fastback with the high-horsepower engine and four speed transmission.

He plans to get the Mustang on the road early next year to relive the memories. Then Brian Carrell will start his next project. “I want to build a T Bucket hot rod,” he says. “I have almost all the parts stored away and can’t wait to get at it.”

The arrival Nov. 21 of the 2012 North American spec i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) was celebrated in Vancouver with Shin Fujioka, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV represents the height of Mitsubishi Motors’ green technologies, and our Canadian partnerships are the largest of its kind in North America.

The i-MiEV will be available to Canadians at Mitsubishi dealerships over the following weeks.

The 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV

(Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) is a five-door, four-passenger, subcompact hatchback that has been designed and packaged to be efficient, ecological and fun to drive.

It will be the most affordable, mass produced, all-electric vehicle in the Canadian marketplace, and with a range of up to 155 kilometers, and a

top speed of 130 km/h, the i-MiEV will make an excellent commuter vehicle for many Canadians living in urban areas.

Thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency, rated as 112 mpg (2.1L/100km), i-MiEV has scored first-place honours of “Fuel Economy Leaders: 2012 Model Year” by the EPA annual Fuel Economy Guide in the US.

With supercar levels of performance and technology, the 580 hp Camaro ZL1 can reach 273 km/h (170 mph) on the famed Nurburgring’s Nordschleife course in Germany.

To maintain stability and steering response at that speed, the ZL1 features an aerodynamic design that generates downforce to press the tires against the track.

“The Camaro ZL1 lapped the

Nurburgring in an incredible 7:41.27 seconds, which would not have been possible without work of our aerodynamics team,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “The design of the ZL1 creates downforce like a race car, harnessing air pressure to press the tires against the track for extra grip and control at high speeds.”

For the ZL1 – the fastest Camaro ever – the aerodynamics team set out to generate downforce for improved

handing at speed while minimizing the amount of increased drag that could reduce fuel efficiency and the vehicle’s top speed. With the computer-assisted design recommendations, engineers tested full-scale clay models and full-size prototypes in the General Motors’ wind tunnel – shaping clay and trimming foam board by hand to affect changes and measure them immediately.

When the dust settled and the wind-tunnel blades came to a stop, the Camaro ZL1 produced 65 pounds of

downforce at an equivalent 241 km/h (150 mph) – compared to 200 pounds of lift in a Camaro SS – which was offset by an increase of only 40 counts of additional aerodynamic drag.

The Camaro ZL1 will be built at the award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario and goes on sale later in 2012.

A convertible model will also be offered for the 2013 model year, starting in the summer of 2012. Pricing will be announced later.

Firmly Planted: Camaro ZL1 comes designed for downforce

The stunning Ford Evos Concept car will make its first appearance in North America as the centerpiece of Ford’s display at the 2012 International CES in Las Vegas, Jan. 10 to 13.

The Evos Concept made its global debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The Ford Evos Concept embodies the company’s new global design language while providing a glimpse at Ford’s technology future highlighted by the use of cloud computing to enhance the driving experience.

The Evos Concept integrates technology in a holistic way meant to enrich the driving experience. By exchanging data with the cloud, the Evos extends the connected lifestyle

from home and office to the vehicle, providing new possibilities for personalization and adaptability of the car.

Through integration of on-board data about driver preferences with cloud-based information such as work schedules, music and weather conditions, and local data delivered through vehicle-to-vehicle communications, Evos Concept aims to make life simpler.

Ford researchers have also incorporated technologies to enhance driver health and wellness while at the wheel. Features such as the heart-rate monitoring seat and certified allergy-free interiors connect to the cloud to monitor the physical state and workload of the driver, and adjust the driving experience accordingly.

Evos Concept to make North American debut

The Ontario-built Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has been designed with impressive down force allowing it to lap the Nurburgring in an incredible 7:41.27 seconds.

The Ford Evos concept car being shown in January at the 2012 International CES in Las Vegas features the use of cloud information technology.

At any other time of the year, having an endless convoy of trucks roll by your front door might inspire a call

to your local town hall. But on Saturday, Dec. 3, you can hang

up the phone and be entertained as the annual Island Equipment Owners Asso-ciation Truck Light Parade winds its way through the streets of the Capital Region.

This year marks the 13th anniversary of the parade — an event that has become a traditional kick-off to the Christmas season — and the 13th consecutive year that organizers have accepted food dona-tions to the Mustard Seed Food Bank and West Shore Christmas Hamper Fund.

Over 80 gravel trucks, flat beds and the like, normally seen on the road and construction sites, will be decked out in their season’s best with garland, twinkling lights and costumed riders to help usher in the festive season.

The parade will gather at Ogden Point at 5:45 p.m. and follow a 35-kilometre route down Dallas Road to Oak Bay. Returning to downtown via Oak Bay Avenue and Yates Street the trucks will head out Douglas Street to the Trans Canada Highway and on to West-

ern Speedway, where they are expected around 8:45 p.m. and will remain on display through-out the evening.

Equipment owners from throughout Greater Victoria will be participating. More than half are coming from the West Shore and at least one mainland company will join in. Ed Lande Trucking of Vancouver has been mak-ing the trip over every year since the parade’s inception.

Police departments from Oak Bay, Victoria, Saanich and West Shore RCMP will join forces to escort the parade and ensure the safety of onlookers and truckers alike. “We really do

appreciate the help given to us by our local police forces,” says event organizer, IEOA secretary-manager Laura Brewer. “We couldn’t hold the parade without them.”

Aside from a couple of older-model “collector” trucks, many of the units are working trucks. “When you see the incredible amount of work that these guys put into decorating their trucks, it’s really awesome,” Brewer adds.

But the parade is more than a daz-zling display of pretty lights. It serves up a reminder of what Christmas really means. “As the parade gives to the community,

so should the community give to each other, especially the less fortunate,” Brewer says.

“Last year, we collected over 7,500 lbs. of food for the Mustard Seed and Christmas Hamper Fund,” Brewer says. “What is col-lected in the West Shore stays there and that makes up about half of what we col-lect in total.”

Non-perishable food items can be dropped in collection bins at Ogden Point, Western Speedway and at various points along the parade route.

QUEBEC CITY: We may not want to think about it, but Old Man Winter is nipping at our heels.

And with the winter weather soon upon us, it’s time to prepare our vehicles for the nasty weather ahead.

Most new vehicles these days come from the factory with all-season radial tires as standard fare.

A common misconception is that all-season tires are good for all weather conditions and all temperature ranges and that’s just not the case.

To help demonstrate the importance of having the proper tires and using the right driving techniques in wintry conditions, GITI Tire invited a group of journalists and tire dealers to Quebec City late last winter to test GT Radial winter tires and learn more about winter driving techniques from professional instructors.

A portion of the winter driving exercise gave us an opportunity to drive on ice in a hockey arena. You may think we spent our time slip, sliding away on the icy surface, but with proper technique, and proper tires, it is possible to maneuver safely even on a slick sheet of ice.

Calling tires “all-season radials” is a misnomer, because they really aren’t suitable for all seasons, unless you’re down south and your winter is snow and ice-free.

Their tread pattern is not meant for ice and snow and the rubber compound is too hard to get the grip you need for winter driving.

Another group of tires are called “all-weather” and these may be suitable for areas where severe winter conditions are the exception rather than the norm. With a tread compound similar to that of winter tires, the all-weather tires have a softer compound in the inner half of the tread, but not the entire tread. In reality, these tires are somewhat of a compromise between all-season tires and winter tires.

An advantage is you don’t have to keep changing from one set of tires to another; a disadvantage is they don’t perform as well as proper winter tires.

Many drivers mistakenly believe that the tire’s tread is the single most important

component in the tire’s performance on ice and snow.

While tread pattern and depth are important, the tread compound is actually the most important contributor, according to William Estupian, director of technical service for the GT Radial brand.

For example, the tread compound for the GT Radial Champiro WinterPro tire has special rubber polymers that help maintain grip in frigid temperatures. In fact, the tire is designed for optimal performance between -10 degrees C and +5 degrees C.

“The tread compound is one of the biggest differences between all-season tires and purpose-built winter tires,” said Estupian. “Summer tires start to lose grip performance at 5 degrees C.”

Unique grooves in the tread design can also work to move water away from the tire’s contact patch, the part of the tire that touches the road surface.

On ice at the hockey arena, slow and easy was the order of the day, just as it should be for drivers facing icy road conditions.

Through a series of braking and cornering exercises, it didn’t take long to realize that if you accelerate slowly and smoothly, you can maneuver on a slick icy surface, provided you have the proper tires that will adhere to the ice.

During trips around a couple of outdoor test courses at a nearby harness racing track, we got to sample both the winter tires and cars outfitted with studded tires. While the latter are banned in southern Ontario, they are available in other parts of the country. The studs provide very aggressive grip when you are dealing with severe ice and snow conditions.

Even with the best of winter tires, smooth and slow are the keys to keeping on the straight and narrow when it comes to snowy and icy conditions.

The best word of advice winter driving experts can impart is to have the proper tires AND drive according to the conditions.

Other keys to driving on ice and snow, experts say, are braking

early and smoothly, keeping your eyes on the road far ahead of you to anticipate possible emergency stops and taking corners slowly and smoothly.
