April has passed, on one hand we are almost halfway in our 2015 journeys, on the other hand we are only halfway

through with the year. In moving forward in 2015 let us always remind ourselves to put a smile in our faces and to celebrate the joys of life and love, such a disposition will strengthen us in each of our steps.

As we begin the month of May, let us draw inspiration from one of the most famous celebrations in the past month, the celebration of April Fool’s Day, one of the most light-hearted days in the year, during which jokes are abundant and laughter is endless. We want to inspire you with the spirit of April Fool’s Day throughout 2015 and we are sharing several articles that are anchored on the idea of fun and excitement in our lives.

“Passion and Profits” encourages readers to look deep into themselves and dig out their passions. If aligned with their passions, we believe that readers will always be motivated in the pursuit of professional careers and business endeavors. “Early Education = Fun = Academic Excellence” reminds everyone of

the importance of fun in early education, and it is recommended that parents take special notice to ensure that their children are having fun while studying.

“A Healthy Family is an Active Affair” also reminds parents who want to raise active children to always integrate fun and excitement into physical activities. Young children have a lot of energy, however, they are easily bored with routines, with proper encouragement parents will see their young children grow up to be fitness-oriented. Lastly “More Fun in Our Community” builds on past articles encouraging us to collaborate towards community development, the article offers some suggestion that readers may find useful in organizing activities towards community development.

Let us always remind ourselves to enjoy and have fun in our lives, there may be challenges and difficulties, however, in the end there are always ways to resolve various challenges and difficulties, whether alone or together with our friends and family.

Parents tend to carefully think and plan for their children’s tertiary education well ahead of time, especially in Asia. It is common

that these parents save for their children’s college education even when the children are still young. There is nothing wrong in preparing for our children’s future, and there is nothing wrong in carefully planning to help our children attain their university degrees. Often though, in tediously planning and preparing for a university degree, we tend to overlook the importance of early education for our children, which is the foundation of our children future academic endeavors.

Most of us grew up in a period where traditional early education is deemed as the best preparation for higher degrees. We went to school and attended play classes as kindergarten students, then we moved on to become elementary students, during which there were more class hours than play hours. Subsequently we entered high school; most of us remember some of the times we spent with our classmates during recess hours and after classes, and there are only a few who can recall blurry details of what happened during class hours. Why? Because we had more fun during recess and after schools compared to during class hours, these fun-filled periods are etched in our memories making it easier for us to recall select high-school experiences.

By Debbie Huang

Perhaps it is best to educate our children through a system that makes learning an experience that our children will yearn for today and in their future as young adults. If class hours offer more fun and excitement compared to recess and after school play hours there will be a significant positive impact on our children’s learning process.

Science classes for young children are often taught in classes with illustrations and models to demonstrate various scientific laws and principles. Imagine teaching science in a kitchen that is properly equipped for safety, we can explain how a fire is ignited in a cooking range or why water does not mix with oil. Imagine math being taught in a garden, where young students count as many bugs as they can capture themselves. These fun learning experiences will make a positive and lasting mark on our children.

Do our children’s schools offer classes that are filled with fun learning experiences? If not, let us share our thoughts with the teachers and school, perhaps changes can be implemented for the benefit of our children. Let us carefully plan for our children’s early education; it will translate to a better learning process.

In recent issues we began to highlight the importance of community development and how individual families can

collaborate and achieve beneficial changes for the entire community. We discussed the importance of a community to a family and vice versa. Our advocacy for community development is anchored in our aspirations to live in a community where everyone is empowered to lead towards changes that will benefit most if not all.

Let us ask ourselves about our own efforts towards community development, have we participated in such activities in recent days? We may be very occupied with our jobs or in managing our respective businesses, nevertheless, have we thought of the benefits that our professional careers and our businesses from an expanded network as a result of our involvement in community development activities. Those among us who are experts in the field of accountancy may meet businesspersons seeking such expertise to help, and those who are in different businesses may encounter prospective customers and suppliers too. With these possibilities in mind, perhaps we can view community development from multiple angles, from the perspective of a community collaborating towards a greater good and from the perspective of an individual who may expand his or her personal and professional network.

Let us begin with the first step of organizing a dialogue during which different families can meet and discuss their aspirations for the community and their own families. Such an open and honest dialogue is best conducted in a relaxed and voluntary setting. Two or three families can already begin to organize the preparations necessary for a community dialogue, each family can invite one more family to join the dialogue, and each of the invited families subsequently will invite one more family to participate, and the cycle goes on until there are sufficient number of families who are eager to participate in a dialogue towards community development.

The actual dialogue itself may take form during a family-oriented afternoon in the park, each family can bring food and drinks and some paper plates and utensils, similar to a potluck party, during which everyone can meet and greet, the children can play while the adults can supervise and discuss possible community development plans. An afternoon of charity bingo may be a good setting for such a dialogue, and if there are business sponsors their financial support can facilitate efforts to organize such an event. A time for families to relax, have fun, and meet new friends is always a good start when thinking of organizing community development activities.

Whether you’ve been in Bali for a few days, or you’ve made this island your home, there is no question that you’ve probably already seen or heard something about

wheatgrass and its many benefits. If that’s not the case, let’s start by pointing out that taking one shot of wheatgrass is the same as consuming one kilogram of fruits and vegetables. Consuming wheatgrass helps to reduce diabetes, promote an efficient digestive system, and many other benefits that will bring you closer to a better lifestyle.

Being in an island where striving for a healthier lifestyle is a popular goal, wheatgrass is rapidly becoming a part of the diet of the residents of Bali. Wheatgrass can be made into deserts, such as sorbets or ice cream, and it can also be mixed with any juice. If you live in Bali, you can have daily access to this nutritious plant thanks to the efforts of Verdure, a local company devoted to the growth and distribution of wheatgrass.

Back in 2008, Verdure opened a farm in Batu Bulan. Knowing that the best wheatgrass comes from four season countries, Verdure imported seeds from neighboring Australia and started its own local harvest in Bali. Today, Verdure distributes its products to well-known healthy restaurants and individuals who want to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Verdure’s staff is able to deliver every day as their daily growth of wheatgrass makes their stock consistent. If you plan to become a regular consumer, Verdure can even provide you with wheatgrass seeds so you can grow your own at home.

For more information, contact Verdure’s staff: [email protected]

If you and your loved ones enjoy solving riddles and puzzle games together, it’s now time to put your skills at work and

dive yourselves into the world of Escape Hunt: Bali, an experience that promises to bring lots of fun to anyone who participates in it.

Escape Hunt is a concept inspired by the popular videogame “Escape The Room,” in which gamers are expected to find clues and solve mysteries in order to escape a room in a limited amount of time; all off this in the screen of a computer or a mobile device. Now, this videogame has transformed into a live-action experience in which players are actually interacting with tangible clues in order to escape a manmade room.

The idea for this concept started in Thailand in the last decade, spreading out quickly throughout the world, and making its capital in Budhapest, where thousands of fans regularly gather to solve mysteries and escape all the virtual rooms that the city has built. In January of this year, Bali welcomed the first “Escape the Hunt” in the island, located on Jln. AGAG right across the street from Bali Buddha and Café Moka.

As of today, Escape Hunt: Bali offers three different scenarios with clues leading up to solve three different mysteries in less than sixty minutes. Players are allowed to call for help, although doing so would cost them a minute off their given time. The scenarios are perfect to put the skills of everyone in the family at work, as long as they are ten years and older. Eight-year-olds might still have fun if they are into solving riddles and finding clues. Younger players, however, might have to wait a little bit before participating of this game, as their patience might run short and their focus would get lost. Nonetheless, bear in mind that the staff is friendly and eager to accommodate and advice groups according to their size and skills so they can have the best experience possible. Fear not, if you have an emergency during the game, because the staff will kindly let you get out of the room.

Some players already completed the three scenarios and are waiting for new mysteries to come up, so make sure you catch up before it’s too late.

Not so often one gets to experience the privilege of picking up vegetables from an abundant garden before turning these greens into well-crafted dishes. However, this is one

of the features of Alila Soori’s prestigious cooking class, one that will surely make you a proud cook after you get to try your creations.

From eggplants, to tomatoes, and other herbs such as Tarragon and Rosemary, Alila’s garden is very diverse. The chef will tell you what to pick and a few minutes later he’ll have you cutting the vegetables at a spacious kitchen with a breathtaking ocean view.

Later on, you’ll be guided to turn these vegetables into tasty salads, and then you will find yourself helping to marinate and grill some Chicken Satay.

The little ones, on the other hand, might find cutting vegetables a challenging and dangerous task. However, the staff will gladly take them to the dessert room, a space

where they can learn how to make chocolate cookies and participate in the making of Alila’s own ice cream.

Once the food is ready, you will come to realize that Alila’s menu mixes local delicacies with world renowned dishes that make up for a perfect combination of flavors. Nasi

goreng, Tom Yum, and Ayam Masak Merah, are just some of the many dishes one can make at Alilla’s kitchen. At the end of the day, everyone in your party will leave Tabanan with a full stomach and a wide smile. Alila Soori knows how to put together a good feast.

Raised in rural Australia in the 50s, Margaret Barry learned what is like to have limited access to education. Nonetheless, her

circumstances were never an excuse to keep Margaret from becoming the person she was meant to be. Years later, she has made Bali her home and is now devoted to help children in Bali to find their dreams and fight for them through the programs created by the Bali Children Foundation.

A few months after the Bali Bombing, Margaret Barry decided that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of children living in remote parts of Bali. Soon enough, she came to realize that education was the solution to fill these children with hope and dreams, factors that were limited to becoming just somebody else in their village.

Although education was the answer, Margaret came to find out that 40 to 60% of the children in these areas did not want to attend High School. Moreover, even if they did, they did not have the motivation to move on and attend a university. On top of that, 50% of the parents in these villages are

illiterate. Seeing that children in the village had weak aspirations and lacked inspiring role models, Margaret and the Bali Children Foundation started educational programs tailored to their context. They established a curriculum that inspires the children at the same time it provides them with education that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. As a result, children are now dreaming of breaking into science, arts, and other fields of education that were not known in their community a decade ago.

Through the years, the Bali Children Foundation’s programs have gone through many changes. However, their goal has stayed the same: to keep children in school. Today, Margaret counts with the help of more than a dozen of teachers, and a group of monitors who not only educate the children, but also help to keep track of their progress and their aspirations. Ultimately, the goal of the foundation is to help whoever has a dream of going out of the village. The process of helping these children has brought all sorts of challenges, but Margaret and her team are surely not giving up.

FaMiLY OF THE MONTH

In the quiet and inspiring village of Ubud we have been lucky to find Janet DeNeefe, the Founder and Director of

the well known Ubud Wirters & Readers festival. Janet is an avid writer, with a heart devoted to her family and the world that surrounds her.

Originally from Melbourne, Janet says love is what made her want to stay in this emerald island. She met her husband after her second visit to Bali in 1984 and pretty well never left after that. Moreover, Janet fell in love with the food and the culture that make up the richness of her newfound home. Three decades later, she is in awe of the pleasure that comes with driving through the countryside of the island as she passes innumerable hills, rice fields and small villages along the road. In exchange, her unstoppable exploration has rewarded her with countless opportunities to try local food like she had never imagined before.

Although Janet acknowledges that sometimes is quite dangerous to drive through Bali’s roads, she claims that the island is a safe place. While living in Ubud, she has witnessed her community to be a source of safety as they look out for each other. In addition, the people surrounding her, along with the ceremonies and other local activities have led Janet to stop and meditate on the beauty of life. Such

By Josue Martinez

experience has made Janet come to understand that the people closest to her are the most precious and important.

The years have passed and Janet has absorbed the essence of Bali as a native. She has four children who are as obsessed about food as she is, which has taken them to explore new places around Ubud and Seminyak. Like any young people, Janet’s children like to go to the beach and to the movies. Janet says that joining community activities, and a friendly and generous personality are the key factors that will make life in Bali successful for anyone coming from outside.

Janet DeNeefe, the Founder & Director of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, is a Melbourne-born artist, author and restaurateur who has lived in Bali for nearly three decades. Her memoir Fragrant Rice charts her love affair with Balinese food, culture and traditions. Her latest book is Bali: Food of My Island Home. Janet began the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing, with the aim of bringing Indonesian and international writers together on a world stage. She is also the owner of Casa Luna, Indus and Bar Luna restaurants in Ubud. DeNeefe is also the director of the new Ubud Food Festival which will be held 5-7 June.

Almost everyone has experienced days where we woke up less motivated than we usually are and had second thoughts of going to the office or to our respective businesses. Sometimes such days are caused by frustrations that stemmed from our inabilities to resolve certain

issues at work, and other times these unmotivated days are caused by problems related to the customers or suppliers of our business. During such days we find it very challenging to motivate ourselves and to pursue our daily activities.

Most of us attempt to address challenging and unmotivated days by trying to directly resolve issues that bother us most. If we are able to subsequently resolve these issues, we usually find joy because of our ability to tackle problems affecting our companies and our businesses. We then move on to undertake business as usual activities until we face new problems and issues that are too difficult to resolve, issues affecting the performance of the business and issues that most likely will trigger another set of frustrations. The cycle continues and it is a vicious one, such frustrations will build up stress and eventually take a toll in our personal lives and on our health.

Rather than directly attempting to resolve the issues and problems affecting our business or performance at work, let us take a step back and assess the situation affecting us. Ideally, before we embark in any professional career or pursue a business opportunity we should ask ourselves about the passions within our hearts. If our passions are perfectly aligned with our careers and our business endeavors, there will be no frustrations when we face challenges that are difficult and complicated. Our passions will drive and motivate us each day, in each of the step we take to resolve issues. Each of our acts in trying to resolve problems is a source of motivation, because these acts are passion-driven. When our passions motivate us each day will be filled with fun and contentment.

Let us not forget that passions do not necessarily translate to success in professional careers or business endeavors. A business must succeed to be sustainable, there must be profits. Management of a business is both art and science; we can seek professionals or businesspersons, people with extensive experience and proper training who can offer a fresh perspective, people with the expertise to help us translate our passions and business to a meaningful and successful endeavor.

Everyone wants to be healthy. Parents who live a healthy and active lifestyle want their children to observe and follow their

lifestyles. Unfortunately, we often have to encourage our children to be physically active; through sports-oriented summer classes, or with sports equipment such as a bike or a pair of roller skates. Even with these efforts, we still witness our children spending minimal hours each week exercising and more time on the couch playing with tablets and PSPs, or watching their favorite cartoons on television.

To raise an active family, as parents we must, first and foremost, lead a healthy lifestyle. It requires a conscious change in ourselves, in our eating habits and most importantly in our exercise routines, and in managing how we integrate these into our family. If we are living sedentary lifestyles ourselves, our children will not change their preference for sedentary activities. When we are able to live a healthy and active life the transformation of our children’s lifestyle is much easier to achieve.

Medical practitioners and fitness experts recommend daily exercises towards a healthy life. We have to eat a healthy diet and exercise at least 20

By Debbie Huang

A Healthy Family Is An Active Affair

minutes or 30 minutes daily. These are easier done by adults who are healthy and fitness conscious; it is not easy for young children. Let us begin with our own exercise routines and evaluate how to best integrate fun filled family time while exercising. Instead of going to the gym daily to jog on the treadmill perhaps we can jog at the park, where our children can bike along for 20 to 30 minutes each day. We can select other activities that require physical exertion, activities that are fun for children too, activities such as throwing Frisbees or kicking footballs.

Let us be reminded that young children can get bored easily with routines. They may enjoy Frisbees for an hour or two for a few days, after a few days they will start seeking other activities for fun. Let us vary our exercise routines - we can spend one day exercising at the park, the next day in the pool, and the day after at the beach. We can also invite our family friends on weekends and their children exercise together with our children, they can ride their bikes along us while we jog and chat with other parents. We must maintain the elements of variety, fun, and excitement in encouraging our children to lead an active lifestyle.
