well done to all
participants. What
a fantastic day!
Thank You for a great Working Bee
Last weekend, once again, I had the absolute pleasure of attending our latest Working Bee – we
had a wonderfully productive day with 31 people Joining Geoff Bateman (our General Assistant)
and me.
Our main mission was to completely revitalise the garden area in front of B Block. Garden beds
were weeded, planted and mulched and the pathway was tidied. The volunteers were successful
and the final product looks fantastic.
All morning our helpers shovelled, wheelbarrowed, planted, dug, weeded, carted, laid turf,
mulched and toiled and I believe the result looks great. Thanks to all who attended and to Amber
Waves Bakery and our P&C for generously providing the workers with morning-tea.
Once again, congratulations to the 31 Barrenjoey Community members, (who joined Geoff and
me) for ‘taking up the challenge’ and striving to continually improve our school. This was yet
another appreciated ‘turn-out’ at one of our Working Bees. We rely heavily on a solid turnout of
parents and students so that we can continue to develop our grounds and make our school a
beautiful environment for our kids to attend. I’m looking forward to seeing you all and hopefully
some new faces at the next Bee, sometime in Term 2 so we can continue our outstanding
development. A special mention to our Senior Leaders who (almost all) attended to help out –
thank you.
As requested by the TAS or Hospitality Dept, a range of plants were selected that could be harvested and
utilized by the students for the culinary delights mastered in the Barrenjoey kitchens. The following plants
were chosen a hedge of Bay and Kaffir Limes, Rosemary, Lemon Grass and Lemon Verbena, Lavender and
Nasturtiums.
Thanks to all the community members who helped at the Working Bee!

Friday April 6 was the Yr. 12 ‘Report Day’
Well the special day for Year 12, a day where students
received their reports, attended presentations and
participated in report analysis is over for another year. In
Year 12, Semester One Reports are given out to students with
their parents present. Students and parents then discuss
results and analyse the report in a constructive manner to
support HSC students as they embark on their final six-
months of schooling.
Following the report distribution students were presented to by a number of speakers,
including myself and Mr Mackenzie Nix (Architect and ex-Barrenjoey student) as well listening
to speakers on study tips from last year’s graduating class, information on the HSC and ATAR
and ‘planning for their future’ with Mr Moylan (Careers Advisor) and Ms Sarah James (DP).
I would like to congratulate all those involved in the day, the parents who attended, the
students who participated, the staff who assisted and the presenters on the day. Behind the
scene Ms Kersten was the driving force and I would like to personally congratulate her and her
assistants for their meticulously detailed organisation.
This event allows parents to gain an understanding of how their child is progressing, while
providing a unique opportunity to engage with them on ‘affirming a direction’ for the remainder
of their course.
I will now be interviewing Year 12 this week to discuss individual progress, removing barriers
and goal setting.
Year 12… the midpoint of the HSC year
Year 12 received their school reports as part of the Report Day
last Friday.
Conducting interviews with all Year 12 students combined with
the Parent Teacher Night this week and the information-packed
reporting process allows us to tailor a non-judgemental learning
plan specific to the individual student while assisting them in setting realistic goals in a caring and supportive environment.
The Semester One Reports for the 101 Year 12 students, with a mean Grade Point Average
(GPA) of 3.5 were very pleasing with a number of individual highlights.

Year 8 - U Think U Know - Cyber Safety Talk
On Tuesday 10th April, Barrenjoey High School year 8 students took part in a ThinkUKnow
presentation.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber safety education program that educates young people on
safe use of technology, the challenges they may face online, and how to help them overcome
these in a safe and ethical way.
ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft
Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in collaboration
with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland
Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as
Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
The presentation was delivered by Senior Constable Darren Cairnes, a local law enforcement
member and an industry volunteer. The presentation covered issues relating to children and
young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online
reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular
websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing.
For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au
Year 9 - Sexual Health Workshops
On 29th of March 2018, all of year 9 took part in a sexual health workshop. The aim of this
workshop was to look at ‘sexual health’, which focused on the transmission of sexually
transmitted infections, what they are and how they can affect you; decision making and choices
in relation to sexual health and relationships; and different forms of contraception and the
choices/decisions that individuals make and the consequences of those actions. Another focus
was on mutual consent and the difference of healthy and unhealthy relationships.
The feedback from this was as follows:
• The majority of the students (95%) who participated in the ‘Sexual Health’ workshop rated
the program between good and excellent
•This graph compares the student’s level of knowledge about ‘Sexual Health and
Contraception’ before and after the workshop took place. All of the students indicated that
after the completion of the workshop, their knowledge ranged between good and excellent.
• The graph below portrays how the participants felt the workshop helped them with their
decision making/problem solving skills in relation to sexual health / relationships. Almost
all of students (97%) indicated that the workshop enhanced their decision
making/problem solving skills.
YEAR 11 - ACADEMIC RESILIENCE PRESENTATION - KATE FITZSIMONS
In week 9, all of year 11 took part a presentation from Kate Fitzsimons, who shared her story of
hope and resilience.
Kate combines her expertise as a certified life coach with the powerful journey of rebuilding her life
after the loss of her sister.
Students learnt about the power of their own choices. They learnt how to take responsibility for
their personal responses to unforeseen and unwelcome circumstances by developing a 'growth
mindset.'
Armed with relatable, relevant, and practical tips to develop a growth mindset every day, students
are enabled to apply their new skills and adopt an improved sense of emotional empowerment and
resilience during difficult times.
All of these workshops form part of the wellbeing program for each year group and the costs are
covered by the wellbeing payment that parents contributed to at the start of the year.
Thank you for your continued support of wellbeing programs at Barrenjoey.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – 2018
With the Sydney Academy of Sport CANCELLING Barrenjoey's carnival booking less than a week out from
our school carnival due to track maintenance, a back up venue was quickly researched and plan B was set
in motion.
The Rotary Athletics Field at Lane Cove came to the rescue and a brilliant day of sunshine and light winds
saw all students have a great day of competing in track and field events to qualify for the Warringah Zone
Athletics Carnival and to crown the Age Champions for 2018.
A MASSIVE MASSIVE thank you to the PE staff for their hard work and diligence in managing such an
unforeseeable late venue change and all that goes with it and thanks to all staff for your hard work on the

SOCCER – BILL TURNER CUP
On Thursday 5th April Barrenjoey HS played Covenant Christian College for the U/15 Bill Turner
Cup both Boys and Girls at Careel Bay Soccer Fields.
The boys match was a see sawing affair with the lead changing hands multiple times.
Unfortunately Covenant won the game 4-2. Players to note were Ethan Langridge who scored 2
goals and Callum Archibald debuted as goal keeper was outstanding!
The girls was definitely more one sided with the Barrenjoey girls dominating play from the kick
off. The game finished 6-0 to Barrenjoey. Goal scorers were Ella Collins 3, Sophie Johns,
Ashleigh Bateson and Eliza Cutrie all scoring 1.
The girls will play the 2nd round early next term. Awesome work girls!

On Tuesday 10 April all Year 7 girls enjoyed a
session developing their Cricket Skills as a lead up
to forming teams of Year 7 and 8 girls for the T20

All students really enjoyed these sessions and we
are very thankful to Fi Penny for sharing her expertise with our students.

Band is building up to its performance on ANZAC Day, April 25, supporting the RSL
ceremonies with a march through Avalon to the strains of Colonel Bogey, then returning to
Dunbar Park to play the National Anthems and Abide with Me, before entertaining the crowd
after the conclusion of the formal proceedings with more pieces from our repertoire. ANZAC
Day is our first public performance for the year, with normally a large crowd in attendance, so
we are happy to not only support this important community event, but remind people of the
fundamental value of the music and Band programs at Barrenjoey.
This Friday April 13 BHS rock band Colonel Skunk and the Spunk Monkeys entertain the
crowds in the final of the Northern Composure rock band competition at Manly Youth Centre,
Kangaroos St, Manly from 7.00-11.00 pm. Skunk needs as many supporters as possible to
come and cheer them on so get yourselves down to the Youth Centre this Friday for a great
night of rock (and some roll).
Congratulations Lachlan and Euan, for their promotions within the Combined Schools Band,
following the latest round of auditions. Lachlan now becomes Principal Sax and section leader,
while Euie moves up to sax 1.

YEAR 9 & 10 EXTENSION ENGLISH – MAJOR WORKS
Over the course of 2017, the Year 9 and 10 Extension English students were challenged to
create a Major Work based on significant research and reading. Our young authors were
given autonomy to produce a body of work that reflected their interest and supported their
creative ambitions.
Their works have been published in a book that is now available for purchase. The
anthology features a range of styles, genres and forms from 21 talented Barrenjoey writers.
In this book you can read pieces of Romantic poetry, tales set in the Scottish Highlands,
journeys of magical realism and much more.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy (for only $15), please contact the school Treasury
