BASHAN TIDINGS TO THE LITTLE FLOCK

THERE IS ONE

There is One, that like a shepherd will defend our way,

And He looks with eyes of pity on the sheep that stray;

From the mountains wild and lonely, still He calls them to His fold,

He is full of grace and mercy-His love can ne'er be told.

There is One, that like a shepherd will defend our way,

We shall see, adore and praise Him thro' a long, bright day;

In the Kingdom of the faithful we shall put our armor on,

And from Him, our Lord and Saviour hear the words, "Good and faithful"

"Well done."

GOD'S PROPHETIC PASTURES

Part

False Signboards Point the Wrong Way

M ORE than once we have read the warning from the servant

of the Lord that when God has a genuine chmmel of light, the enemy has plenty of counterfeits. Although Davidia has been plagued with many false signboards through the years, now that God's sheep are nearing the fmal feeding ground, the final pasture, Gilead, God's glorious Kingdom, the enemy is planting his little counterfeit signboards all along the way, pointing the unwary and unsuspecting to wrong turns in the road to the Kingdom. But the earnest and faithful student of the Rod will clearly see that these are not on the up-to-date map of truth, and are only placed there by the enemy to them off the track of truth. The wise will not be fooled by any of the devil's alluring and tinseled signs.

"Who are the wise? They must be those who are ever searching for and buying oil' -those who consequently have their vessels full 25:1-13). These are they who are let in through the door; who have obtained and followed an up-to-date map of truth." -lTG 51:13:3, 1953 Edition; 14:2,

1985 Edition, In the October- December 1974

Timely-Truth Educator, God's servant wrote:

" ' ... Those by their human construction, shall make the Scripture to utter that which Christ has never placed upon it, weakens its force, making the voice of God in instruction and warnings to testify falsehood, to avoid the incmwenience incurred by obedience to God's requirements, have become signboards, pointing in the wrong direction, into false paths, which lead to transgression and death"'FE 387:0.

"These humbugging human 'signboards, pointing in the wrong direction, into false paths,' refuse to accept the simple, self-evident basic sequence of Micah 7:14: Carmel Bashan second; and Gilead third. They even say, as one writes, 'Brother Houteff didn't interpret the last half of the text.' And in the very face of The Shepherd's Rod, Volume 1, page 243:2! How any rational mind can be blind to or refuse to acknowledge and accept the conclusive corroborative affirmation in Volume l, page 243:2 (though all the while professing to believe, accept, and exalt all the Rod) that 'Carmel,

Page 4: BASHAN TIDINGS

4 BAS HAN TIDINGS

Bashan, and Gilead are used as symbols of good spiritual pastures' whence 'spiritual food ... (tmth) ... found in the Rod,' is fed to God's flock, is as mysterious and inexplicable as is any other part of the mystery of iniquity. They appeal to the inverted sequence of Isaiah 33:9-first 'Bashan' and second 'Carmel,' even though the significance in this scripture is its 'pu·ofoundly figurative' content, not 'the time o.f fulfillment' which was, from the time Brother Houteff commented on it (March 29, 1947), 'yet future' 34:12:9, 1953 Edition; 13:7, 1986 Edition)."-18 TTE 2:10:3, OctoberDecember 1974.

Analysis of tl.1.e Isaiah 33:9 Paswres

" 'The earth moumeth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake offtheir fruits.' Isa. 33:9.

"The nouns in this verse being profoundly figurative, and the time of fulfillment yet future, we are unprepared to make a_ny comments." -lTG 34: 9, 1953 Edition; 13:6, 7, 1986 Edition.

As noted in the aforequoted passage from the Educator, "the significance in this sclipture is its 'pn>Joundly figurative' content, not~'the time of fulfillment'

which was, from the time Brother Houteff commented on it (March 29, 1947), yet future."

A correct understanding of these "profoundly figurative" nouns must come from the Rod itself. And the Rod gives the basic principle that in order to understand or unlock prophecy, we need the right key.

" ... Only when we take God at His word can we in truth study the Scriptures. Then we need but the

word to unlock the mysteries of God."-2TG 8:27:1, 1948 Edition; 26:1, 1989 Edition.

" ... The key found to unlock one mystery may other precious gems of knowledge heretofore undiscovered."-4T 414:1.

The key word in understanding the "profoundly figurative" nouns of Isaiah 33:9 is found in the following the Rod gives ofthe nouns in Micah 7:14:

" ... Carmel, Bashan, and Gilead are used as symbols of good spiritualpr.asture."-lSR 243:2.

The "key word" to unlock Isaiah 33:9 is "good spiritual pasture." Since the hwt two nouns are symbolical of "good spiritual pasture," then the first two nouns must be

Bashan, and all figurative

of good pasture, make it incontrovertibly clear that Lebanon and Sharon must be figurative of

pasture-the same

Page 5: BASHAN TIDINGS

VOLUME 11, NUMBER 2 5

principle the Rod holds in explaining the five angels of Revelation 14. If the first three angels represent messages, then the two angels following must represent messages.

"All classes of second Advent believers agree that the angels brought to view in the 6th and 7th verses of this chapter represent the Advent message to the Church and the world. If this is true, then all five of the angels brought to view in this chapter represent five distinct messages prior to the or we are left without a rule to interpret this chapter."-A Word to the «Little Flock," pp. 10, 11.

Bearing out further the significance of this point, the Educator says: "Just as all five of a kind of the Revelation 14 sequence of angels must have the same generic significance-messages, just so must all five of a kind in the Isaiah 33:9-Micah 7:14 sequence of name-places have the same generic significance-pastMres, or 'we are left without a rule to interpret' this

"Analogically, all five digits on the hands have the same generic significance-fingers. Specifically, they are different---little finger, thumb, middle finger, et al. But generically they are one and the same-fingers.

"The same is true of the five toes on the foot Specifically they

are little toe, big toe, et al.; generically they are toes.

"The five angels of Revelation 14 are, generically, messages, though specifically they are differ~ ent messages. Likewise, the five name-places in Isaiah 33:9-Micah 7:14 are, generically, pastures, though specifically they are different pastures,

"What could be more obvious, simple, clear, and certain?"-18 TTE 2:16:6-9.

And yet only the wise in Davidia can see this obvious, simple, clear and certain conclusion from God's bound up while the foolish continue to dose their eaxs and eyes and harden their hearts as they accept the sophistries of the enemy. 'What a sad oli2:ht to be in.

"Bashan's and Carmel's being 'good pasture' incontestably makes Lebanon and Sharon, at their inception, 'good spiritual pasture' likewise. par. 3.

So in the light of logic and all five of these nouns must represent "good spiritual pasture." Again, let it be reiterated, that since the Rod gives the interpretation of Micah 7:14 and specifies that Carmel, Bashan and Gilead represent

spiritual " then it follows that Carmel and Bashan in the sequence of Isaiah 33:9 represent Carmel which brought the Rod from 1930-1955, and Bashan

present with us today until Ezekiel 9, which is binding up the Rod tes-timony and confirming it among truth's disciples and themonly. And Sharon and Lebanon must represent two other feeding pastures for God's flock prior to CarmeL And what could they represent but the SDA Church and the Millerite Movement, the two prophetic places which came before Carmel? A careful analysis of all five of these names, Lebanon, Sharon, Cannel, Bashan, and Gilead, show that symbolically they fit the period of time in which they exist

Lebanon-the Millerite Movementt

Why is Lebanon chosen to symbolize the Millerite Movement and not Sharon or Carmel or Bashan? The statement quoted from the Rod shows that these nouns are profoundly figurative. So all of these nouns are used not randomly and indiscriminately, but in accordance with divine design to show the specific characteristic of each movement Lebanon was known for its cedars. These were trees of high stature with beautiful branches affording forest shade (Ezek. 31:3). Among other uses, its beautiful wood was used in building Solomon's temple and his house "and other important houses in Jeru-

salem" (Unger's Bible Dictionary). No loftier and nobler trees could the Lord use to symbolize the leaders of the Millerite Movement. Miller and his associates were men of sterling, noble characteL Despite the fiercest opposition, they stood stalwartly for the unpopular message they were preaching. They believed wholeheartedly in the prophecies. They were not like "trees driven with the wind and tossed." They could not be swayed from their position for any consideration.

" ... Men of learning and position united with Miller, both in preaching and in publishing his views ....

"William Miller possessed strong mental powers, disciplined by thought and study; and he added to these the wisdom of heaven by cmmecting himself with the Source of wisdom. He was a man of sterling worth, who could not but command respect and esteem wherever integrity of character and moral excellence were valued. Uniting true kindness of heart with Christian humility and the power of self-control, he was attentive and affable to all, ready to listen to the opinions of others and to weigh their arguments. Without passion or excitement he tested all theories and doctrines by the Word of God, and his sound reasoning and thorough knowledge of the Scriptures

enabled him to refute error and expose falsehood."-GC 335:1, 2.

His labors and prophetic utterances that Christ would soon appear in the clouds of heaven attracted widespread attention. " ... Liquor dealers abandoned the traffic and tumed their into meeting rooms; dens were broken up; infidels, deists, Universalists, and even the most abandoned profligates were reformed, some of whom had not entered a house of worship for years. Prayer meetings were established the various denominations, in different quar-· ten;, at almost every busi-nessmen assembling at for prayer and praise. There was no extravagant but an almost universal solemnity on the minds of the people. His like that of the early Refmmers, tended rather to convince the understanding and arouse the conscience than merely to excite the emotions."Id. 332:0.

While God's servants were

pa''"""u'·""iS the message of truth, Satan's adversaries were at work to keep the honest from Thus it was that truth was met by falsehood and cism, hatred and ridicule. Despite all of Miller and his associates their work with faithfulness and unselfish-

Christ and of the end of the world. Isaiah 33:9 says, "Lebanon is

ashamed and hewn down." Like the Lebanon was ashamed and hewn down. Why were they ashamed, and were

hewn down?-because they misunderstood the event which terminated the 2300-day prophecy. Like the early who preached that the of God was at "Miller and his associates preached the message based on Daniel 8: 14 and Revelation 14:7, and failed to see that there were still other messages to view in Revelation which were also to be before the advent of the Lord"", .Both classes fulfilled the wi.ll of God in delivering the message which He desired to be given, and through their own misapprehension of their message, suffered disappointment"Id. 353:0.

Christ was coming in the autumn of 1844 A.D. possessed the believers then, was indeed as 'sweet as honey' to them. But when the longingly awaited hour came, and failed their joyous expectations, the sweet hope turned to 'bitter' disappointment It did so not only because they had still longer to remain on this cursed and hapless earth, sin-convulsed and deathweary, instead of entering into a land where there is 'no more death, neither son·ow, nor crying, neither ... any more (Rev. 21:4), but also because they were mocked the wicked multitude, who hated the idea that the world was then coming to an end."-5Tr. 101:1, 1942 Edition; 1984 Edition.

So Lebanon (the Millerites) was indeed ashamed and "hewn downo" Today, save for a handful of Millerite§ left, and significantly, around the very location where Miner started the message, there is no denomination known worldwide as "Millelite."

Sharon-the SDA Church

Although a multitude of false·· hearted believers lost hope and gave up, God's honest few began in earnest to study Daniel 8:14. Then God answered the faithfulness of these believers and revealed to them the true event which terminated the

prophecy-that of Christ's entering the holy of holies to begin the work of the investigative Judgment of the dead. This resulted in the religious awakening which started in 1844 with the preaching of the three angels messages of Revelation 14. It was also at this time that God called Sister Ellen G. White to the prophetic office. But why did God liken this pasture to Sharon? Why did He not call it Bashan or Carmel instead? Again, God used the exact noun, Sharon, to denominate this pasture. Sharon was said to be one of the most fertile spots in Palestine" It was known for its beauty and excellency. (See Isaiah 35:2.) Christ likens Himself to the "Rose of Sharon." It was God's purpose for this Church to preach, teach and practice the beautiful. message He had entrusted into their hands, thus drawing men to

. the Rose of Sharon. The servant of the Lord wrote: "Let us, then, remember that

our weakness and inefficiency are largely the result of looking to man, of tmsting in man to do those

for us that God has promised to do for those who come unto Him. We need Jesus, the Rose of Sharon, to beautify the character and make our lives with

works, so that we shall be a savor of Clnist unto God. Will not our people arouse themselves to

the Scriptures, and to

Today, roses are among the best loved flowers of the world. They the air with their sweet-smelling fragrance. And God's purpose for the SDA Church was to be like the Rose of Sharon. They were to perfume the world, so to speak, with the Advent mes-sage. Significantly, the pioneers of this movement were known for their "excellency," with their selfless determination and sacrificial spirit in to spread the Advent message.

But from very early on, alter the birth of the Advent Movement, apostasy in, and instead of the Church's being like the Rose of Sharon to the it disregarded the warnings and admonitions given the servant of the Lord about its condition until, in the Lord left these sad words on record:

"I am filled with sadness when I think of our condition as a people. The Lord has not closed heaven to us, but our own course of continual backsliding has separated us from God. Pride, covetousness, and love of the world have lived in the heart without fear of banishment or condemnation. Grievous and presumptuous sins have dwelt among us. And yet the general opinion is that

from following Christ her Leader and is steadily retreating toward Egypt. Yet few are alarmed or astonished at their want of spiritual power. Doubt, and even disbelief of the testimonies of the Spirit of God, is leavening our churches everywhere. Satan would have it thus. Ministers who preach self instead of Christ would have it thus. The testimonies are unread and unappreciated. God has to you" Light has been e>uuuut;

from His Word and from the testimonies, and both have been slighted and disregarded. The result is ap-

in the lack of purity and devotion and earnest faith among us."-5T 217:1,2.

"0 .. As Jesus views the state of His professed followers today, He sees base ingratitude, hollow formalism, hypocritical insincerity, pharisaical pride and apostasy!'Id. 72:2.

"I do not find rest in spirit. Scene after scene is presented in symbols before me, and I find no rest until I begin to write out the matter. At the center of the work matters are being shaped so that every other institution is following in the same cm:rrse. And the General Conference is itself becoming corrupted with wrong sentiments

Because the testimonies of the of God were and

And I will put upon you, and cause you to walk in My statutes.' If the wilderrMzs,~ of the church is to become as a fruitful field, and the fruitful field to be as a the Holy Spi1it of God out upon His people. The heavenly agencies have long been waiting for the human agents, the members of the church, to cooperate with them in

the great work to be done. They are waiting for you. So vast is the field, so comprehensive the design, that every sanctified heart will be pressed into service as an agent of divine power."-The Paulson Col~ lection Ellen G. White p. 158:2.

"This is precisely the condition of those who have not a vital connection with Christ seem to be ever working at cross purposes with God, and are so full of jealousy, evil and strife-satanic attributes-that

are constantly lying the are not doers of the words of Christ Yet many church members are in this very P~'nwua, They dwell, as it were, in the salt land, in a parched wilderness."-R & H, February 1897.

Unlike Lebanon, the Millerite Movement, the SDA Church is not "hewn" down but has become a wilderness, "yet few are alarmed or astonished at their want of spiritual power." They continue with their and "power" pro-

gram, inventing ways and means of giving the message to the world, talking of "marketing" the message, and initiating programs such as A Thousand Days of Reaping, Harvest '90, Global Strategy, and '"""'"ntlhr Net '95. And if time lasts, these programs will continue to proliferate and to flood the ChuTch with the unconverted in heart. Long ago the servant of the Lord wrote:

" ... The influence of these older church members will leaven those newly come to the faith. The Lord does not now work to b1ing many souls into the truth, because of the church members who have never been converted and those who were once converted but who have backslidden. What influence would these unconsecrated members have on new converts? Would they not make of no effect the God-given message which His people are to bear?"-6T 371:00

Since millions are now coming into the Church, and the "Lord is not now working to bring many into the " then it is dear who is bringing in the host of unconverted into the Church. The Lord's voice, though, continues to plead with the Church, that she may return from her apostasy and her illicit endeavors to God's true ways of taking the gospel to all the world. (See Tract No. 4; 2TG 6; 2TG

Carmel and The Shepherd's Rod Movement

Carmel of old was noted for its excellency and its fertility 0 It was said to be a "fruitful field, a garden

a garden vineyard." Its eminences were covered with shrubs -prickly oak and Its strata was of limestone. It was very fruitful in orchards or as its narne imports. It's leafy fertility was proverbial, producing olive trees and other fruit trees.

Elijah of old was also connected with Carmel, for it was here when God's people were deep in sy, that a great victory was wrought to vindicate the true of Jehovah.

Although not a movement in itself, but a movement within a movement (see the 11th hour chart), at a time when the Church was in deep apostasy, the Lord raised up antitypical Elijah (TM 475:3), in a place named Mt Carmel Center, with a message of revival and reformation to be given to the Church. The message, God's voice to His people, is The Shepherd's Rod. But like Israel of the ministers despise its pleadings and warnings and have turned a deaf ear to all its entreaties. They have opposed and fought it for over sixty-five years now. They have worked relentlessly to keep the laity from investigating and

Page 12: BASHAN TIDINGS

14 BASHAN TIDINGS

It is mandatory that God keep the Association intact until the refonnatory work in the Church is accomplished. Hence, after Brother Houteff' s and the former Sister Houteff and her Council repudiated the message and abandoned the old Mt Carmel property, the Association had to be reorganized to carry on the reformatory work in the Church. The only such reorganization took place in Los Angeles, California, in 1961, and came about the time the old Mt. Carmel property was disbanded. The person instrumental in bringing about this reorganization was the past Porter/President of the Bashan Association, M. J. Bingham. After the Association was reorgan-

it removed its interim headquarters from California to Bashan Hill, Exeter, Missouri, USA. And it is from this place that the reformatory message is continuing its work for the Church. Thus the Association did not die when the former Florence Houteff the Rod on the altar with her false interpretations, which resulted in her liquidating the Association's assets, and closing down the work at Mt Carmel Center, Waco, Texas. And it is also a noteworthy fact that the reorganizational work did not fall into the hands of novices or inexperienced people. The work of reformation was still to go forward, and God had in reserve, as in

fonner days, a faithful remnant to continue the work. So the pasture of Bashan is presently with us,

a threefold work of binding up the Rod testimony, taking the reformatory message to the Church, and getting the vanguard ready to

on the wedding garment-getting rid of their own righteousness and putting on the righteousness of Christ.

Like the 6th and the 9th hour calls of Matthew Carmel and Bashan are spoken of conjointly, and thus are closely related (see WHR 19:2, 1986 Edition; 19:3, 1993 one producing the Rod, and the other binding up its testimony. Note that Bashan and Carmel are not "hewn down," nor do they become a "wilderness." They share a similar experience. "Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits." Isa. 33:9. What does shaking off their fruits mean? Fruit is what the tree produces. When the tree finishes producing its crop and has no more fruit, it shak:es them off, until the produc-

of the next crop. Car-mel produced the Rod which Bashan is binding up. After the Rod message was produced at Carmel, Cannel finished its work and there was no more production of the Rod, Carmel shook off its fruits until the next season-the Bashan period. Bashan will remain until its work of binding up the

Page 13: BASHAN TIDINGS

VOLUIVffi 11, NUMBER 2 15

Rod testimony is accomplished. At that time, Bashan will shake off its fruits. Shaking off its fruits means that they have finished their work. And a doubt Bashan will remain until its work is finished, just as Carmel remained until its work was done. Although there are plenty of counterfeit Carmels, none of them can claim that they are producing the Rod. After Bashan finishes its work, Ezekiel 9 takes place, then Gilead, the final pasture, with its message and work, will come into its own.

More False Signboards Plaglling Davidians

As in former the devil has increased his attacks with intensity as he knows fully well that his time is short. So he instituted his warfare against God's true Association just shortly after its reorganization. Since 1962 numerous false Associations have with the first split-off in California. The split-off fathered by R G. Warden came to a quick end. Though most of his followers deserted him, he determinedly continued on his own. He started to publish a paper and called his headquarters The Shepherd's Rod Publishing Association, which was located in his home in Vista, California.

Shortly afterwards, a few leftover Carmelites and others associ-

ated with him changed the name to The Davidian Seventh-day Adventist Association. After a while, they removed their headquarters to Salem, South Carolina. Within a short time, the group split in two, with some going back to California, and the others remaining in South CaroHna, the latter group taking the nanw of The General Association of Davidian SDA. Through the years, more split offs took place, resulting in groups now located in and '-'""u''""""' California, and Mountaindale, New York. Then several other voices arose from Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, and Washington, to name a few of the many split-offs from God's true Association. And then there were others of the family of Spmcedale, more recently from Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. Thus the devil has succeeded in causing confu-

but among those who do not know the Master's voice. All of these split-offs work against each other, but are united on one point-to fight Bashan and its present mode of operating under the direction of the living of Prophecyo They hate Bashan, the

the binding up of the testimony and, in short, whatever Bashan stands for. With one accord they declare that Bashan is either in error, in apostasy, or has finished

Some Pertinent Questions

Why is Gilead placed in the Micah 7: 14 sequence of pastures and omitted from the sequence of Isaiah 33:9?

In Micah 7:14, God commands His prophet to feed His people on the Rod in three places of spiritual pasture. In this scripture, there is no hewing down, no wilderness, or shaldng off of fruits. But in Isaiah 33:9, the four pastures mentioned there had the aforementioned experiences. Why? Because they existed in the tare-and-wheat period and showed what was to become of each one in succession, when its work was finished. Whereas, Micah 7: 14 is dealing solely with the aspect of feeding God's people with the Rod in three places. Since Gilead, the last of the pastures, does not exist in the tare-and-wheat period, it could not scripturally or logically be placed in that sequence of Isaiah 33:9.

Another question which these uninspired leaders of the various split-off Associations cannot answer is why Bashan is placed before Carmel in Isaiah 33:9. The clear and simple fact is that when the light on the scripture was bound up, it was in the Bashan peliod. So Bashan (present with us today), like Carmel, win also shake off its fmits when its work is finished.

Will Bashan go into apostasy as some of its detractors claim? Bashan crumot go into apostasy as the Rod certifies it to be a "good spiritual " It will continue to be a "good spiritual pasture" all

the way until its work is finished. With the "living Spirit of Prophecy" in its midst, its work of bringing revival and reformation in the Church is sure to succeed. "Without the living Spirit of Prophecy in the midst, no revival and reformation efforts can succeed, and that is why they an heretofore have failed."-lTG 10:27:1, 1953, 1986 Editions.

Again, "without the living Spirit of Prophecy in our midst, there can be no success in any revival and reformation, and ... the sooner we know it the quicker we shall achieve our goal."-Id., par. 2.

In Conclusion

"We are approaching the parting of the ways where we must decide whether we will be among the many of whom Daniel spoke that shall be purified, and made white, and tried, and understand; or of those who shall do wickedly and not understand. If we would be

among the wise and purified ones, we had better without delay find out what our idols are and put them away; for that is the factor that will decide to which of the two classes we will belong. Since none of the wicked shall understand in the day of the Lord, it shows that the Tmth will become deeper and deeper until fmally the wicked will not be able to comprehend It. The point where they first lost out or became blinded, however, was when they met their idols and refused to tear themselves away from it. The things we love and esteem more than God's Kingdom are our idols." ~12 Code 6 & 1991 Edition.

"Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip." He b. 2:1. (Concluded)

(All emphases from the Educa~ tor belong to quotations.)

"We are really enriched with Truth if we have studied ann assimilated what has been given us, for we have had made available to us the 'gold that is tried in the fire' that we might be rich, the 'cy"'alvc' that we 'might o;cc,' the 'miment' wHh which we may be covered (Rev. 3), and the 'extra oil' that our way might be lighted (Matt. 25). Therefore the devil is not going to attack us where he attacked Laodiceans, but he will tell us that we are poor in Truth."-11 Code 2:9:3, 1991 Edition.

the sweat of his efforts, commends him to God. In essence, it is a way for man to try to buy favor with God. In works-based religions, adherents win good standing by performing the outward requirements of religion, while the hidden things of the heart may be full of eviL In the 1888 experience, this was reflected in the fact that leaders from the Traditionalist-Legalist wing observed the Sabbath, but were, according to Ellen White, laughing at, jeering, and mocking the messengers of "righteousness by faith." (See TM 80:0.)

3. The conflict at Minneapolis in 1888 was also a generational one. The older leaders saw themselves as "pioneers," "men of experience," the "learned elders," while Jones and Waggoner were seen as young upstarts, youthful enthusiasts, and novices who needed instruction. To men who had gone through the 1844 experience and who had been instrumental in founding the SDA Church, the thought that two young converts to Adventism could teach them anything was laughable. History was repeating itself: Jones and Waggoner were in the position of the young Martin Luther challenging the elderly powers of Rome; or young Daniel and his compatriots challenging Nebuchadnezzar; or young Isaiah being called to give a message; or the lad Jesus reasoning with (and

instructing) the sage rulers of Israel. (Interestingly, Ellen White was only 17 when she began her work-which perhaps increased her bond of sympathy with the relatively young Jones and Waggoner.) In every generation, there has a been a conflict between those who want to hold back and those who want to go forward. In most cases, this takes on the character of a generational struggle, in which traditionalists are the older ones and progressives are generally younger people whose minds are more capable of absorbing new ideas and doctrines. (Another interesting historical sidenote: most of the early Rod converts were in their twenties and early thirties.) These were the essential reasons for the conflict at Minneapolis in 1888.

The Power of Tradition

What is tradition? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, "The passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation, especially by oral communication .... A set of customs .... A

of unwritten religious precepts." Clearly, for the keen student of the Bible, tradition can have no place or power because the Bible is God's complete, per-

and all-sufficient body of written communication to man. It

Page 17: BASHAN TIDINGS

VOLUME 11, NUMBER 2 23

is also clear that oral communication is dangerously susceptible to being expanded, diminished, or modified in ways that fundamentally alter the original meaning of the communication. Still, tradition enjoys a powerful hold upon people. Why? Tradition does not call for change -it abhors change, just as most people naturally dislike change. Tradition and human nature are highly compatible. Once people are inculcated in a belief system, they grow comfortable in it because it lulls them into a false sense of security, and they feel relieved of the strain of wrestling with truth and enor until truth triumphs. This is the heart of tradition: a false spiritual security that excuses the intellectual quest for eternal truth. In short, tradition is like a big, soft, feather bed that puts people fast to sleep. Most people resist awaking from a deep, comfortable sleep, as they resist cutting loose from tradition and opening their minds to receive new ideas, new beliefs, new convictions and, most importantly, new truth.

In the 1888 experience, each of these features of tradition was baldly evident in the bitter opposition to Jones and Waggoner from the entrenched, traditional powers. Even the Adventist writer Wallenkampf realized this when he referred to "traditional Seventh-day

Adventist exegesis."

Further Reasons for Opposition

Another important reason emerges for the opposition to the Jones-Waggoner message. This lies in the power that the worksmentality has upon its adherents. The original righteousness-throughworks example was Cain. Man always chooses works that please, rather than displease, him. For Cain, it was more pleasing to bring beautiful fruit of the field to God rather than to endure the trauma of taking the life of an innocent lamb. Rather than trusting in the vicarious atonement provided by slaying the lamb, Cain brought the works of his own hands to God. He prob-ably felt satisfied that he had taken an active part in his own salvation and had not hm1 an innocent animal. On the surface, Cain's actions seem to present a powerful argument: why make a poor creature suffer when the fruit of the field could serve the purpose? From Cain's day to our own, salvation through works has had a powerful grip on the minds and hearts of human beings through Cainlike arguments. Today, the New AgeChristianity amalgam asks the charged question, "Why have a man named Jesus hanging and bleeding on a cross when the only

Page 18: BASHAN TIDINGS

24 BASHAN TIDINGS

thing necessary for salvation today is to have one's heart and soul aligned with cosmic righteousness?" (Or, as a spokeswoman for a group of "Christian feminists" recently declared, "We don't need blood and gore and all that stuff for salvation." Cain could not have said it any better. In essence, this says, "My works, not the blood of the Lamb.")

Faith is belief in things not seen, while works of the flesh are always an expression of belief in things that are seen. For many people today, the vision of the crucified Saviour is difficult, perhaps impossible, to see through the lens of almost two thousand years of history. People want something they can see, something they can feel, something that is here and now. And works supply a feeling of immediate satisfaction: holding a crystal; saying the rosary; lighting candles; going Harvest Ingathering; recording the number of good deeds done by a church. Each and every one of these acts is part of the works-for-salvation mentality. On the other hand, faith is spiritual; it deals with the unseen; it challenges us to reach upward and outward away from this earth; we must let go of our ,puny abilities and trust wholeheartedly in the outside, Divine power. We can illustrate the faith-versus-works issue this way: would you choose a

one hundred dollar bill right in front of you, or would you choose the promise of a million dollars fifty years from now? Most people would chose the hundred dollar bill and thereby lose the greater gift. The greater gift demands faith, while the lesser requires only a little immediate human action (just reach out and take the hundred dollars). Works are fleshly and therefore appeal to the natural heart. This is because the natural heart is in tune with fleshly things just as a radio receiver is tuned to receive signals. Because the heart of man is by nature fleshly, works appeal to him.

The Final Word on the Faith-Versus-Works Contention

The final word on the faithversus-works contention is found in the Bible. The weight of evidence comes down firmly on the side of righteousness by faith in the righteousness of Christ.

• The law of faith is superior to the law of works. Rom. 3:27.

• God's grace imputes "righteousness without works." Rom. 4:6.

• Election to eternal salvation is "not by works, but of Him that calleth," meaning that God calls His own through His unfathomable grace. Rom. 9:11.

• Israel stumbled because it

Page 19: BASHAN TIDINGS

VOLUME 11, NUMBER 2 25

sought righteousness works rather than through faith. Rom. 9:31, 32.

• The election of grace (salvation) cannot be of works, else faith would be nullified. Rom. 11:5, 6.

• "Knowing a man is not justified by the works of the but the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." Gal. 2: 16.

• The indwelling of the Holy Spirit comes through faith, not "works of the law." Gal. 3:2.

o Miracle-working power comes by "the hearing of faith," not "works of the law." Gal. 3:5.

• We are not the but by faith. Gal. 3:11.

• We are saved by grace through faith, not works. Eph. 2:8, 9.

o "Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our \Vorks, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world

"2 Tim. 1:9. • " ... The kindness and love of

which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; that being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Titus 3:4-7.

• To reach perfection, we must cut loose from "dead works" and have a living faith instead. Heb. 6:1; 9:14. calls this the "lively hope." 1 Pet 1:3.)

• Righteousness by faith is not solely a New Testament doctrine. Isaiah 64:6 declares: "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."

Not a single human being has ever or will ever be able to work himself into heaven, to save himself through works, to commend himself to God deeds. Salvation is through God's power that comes to us by grace. To reject God's grace and the righteousness of Christ is to etemal salvation. The lesson of 1888 is clear: salvation is through faith in Christ's righteousness, not by works or the law. Salvation comes to us through Jesus Christ :md His eternal sacrifice which has paid the

~ A Statement of Faith

Statement made by __ to the pastors and elders at the __ _ SDA Church not long before being disfellowshiped.

I also believe the fundamental beliefs of the SDA Church, being a baptized member. I am so happy to have this chance to give my testimony here before God and before you pastors and elders.

About 15 months ago, my life changed dramatically because I believe with all my heart that God

LETTERS

guided me to His Truth for this time in the history of this world. I found out that there was more truth that I was obligated to study. I attended Bible studies on Sabbath afternoons. I asked the person leading out in the studies how I could be sure that what we were studying was truth. He told me to pray, asking God to show me the truth, and if there was error, to show me. Up until now, God has showed me that what I have been studying is Truth-not only that, it is becoming more and more clear.

We are studying the Bible and the writings of our prophetess, Mrs. Ellen G. White. We are admonished Mrs. White in Counsels or. Sabbath School Work, pages 25-35, that we have a duty to study new truth. I would ask each one of you to look up these quotations because they are very important. They refer to us in the SDA Church in these last

I have discovered beautiful truth which has been right under my nose for years, but I was unaware of it because I was following the general trend of most socalled Adventists who go to church, glance at the Sabbath School lesson sometimes, and listen to the sermon if it is interesting. I went to college and studied Bible doctrines and Daniel and Revelation, and the few charts Adventists have of the 2300 days, etc., but never, never, in all my life as an Adventist has the whole picture become clear to me as now. It is simply so beautiful! It is so exciting!-and every piece of the puzzle of this world's history fits into place perfectly. Verses that once puzzled me now make perfect sense. We have charts depicting the history of this world from beginning to end.

This, my friends, is the truth of the SDA Church for this present time in history. This message is the Elijah message before the great

and dreadful day of the Lord-this is the latter rain--and it is calling the members of the SDA Church away from their lukewarmness back to sincere and genuine repentance and obedience to God. This message was first given to the General Conference in 1929 through the Sabbath School Lessons quarterly of January, February, and March.

We cannot afford to compromise with the world. Mrs. White tells us that we have to be seen as completely different from the world in every facet of our lives. Truth sanctifies the life, as we read in John 17:17: "Sanctify them through Thy Truth. Thv Word is Truth."

I believe with all my heart that this is the Truth for the SDA Church for this time in eartl1's and I will never, ever up God's beautiful message for His people!-His last mile home! (Canada)

HEALTH WAVE

A HOUSTIC LOOK AT ... DIGESTION

PEOPLE eat for many reasons: as a social function; to gain emo

tional security, comfort or enjoyment; to pass the time; to appease boredom or frustration-the reasons are numerous-but the true reason we eat is to extract nutrients from foods. To do this, the body digests foods into elements that are absorbable by the cells and eliminates those that are of no use.

The important parts of digestion are those involving the digestive organs-the stomach, small and large intestines, pancreas, gallbladder and liver. There are any number of problems that can result from a malfunction of these organs. Following is a description of the digestive organs involved in turning food into usable energy for the body and an overview of products that are beneficial to them.

The Hungry Stomach

Function: The stomach lies in the upper left region of the abdomen just below the diaphragm and is primarily responsible for the digestion of proteins and the ionization of minerals. About the only substances absorbed by the stomach are water and some glucose; the rest have to await further breakdown

and absorption by other organs in the digestive system. The stomach lining contains glands that secrete hormones, enzymes and hydrochloric acid (HCL) essential for digestion. It can produce more than two quarts of these gastric juices per day and digestion can last for up to an hour until the food is satisfactorily combined with the juices. Once the process is completed, the resulting mixture is called chyme.

According to Michael Murray, N.D., and Joseph Pizzomo, N.D., in their book the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, two common problems with the stomach are hypochlorhydria, or deficient gastric acid secretion, and achlorhydria, the absence of gastric secretions. These conditions are often indicated by bloating, belching, burning and flatulence after meals, as well as by indigestion, diarrhea and constipation.

Beneficial Products: Most physicians treat hypo- and achlorhydria by administering hydrochloric acid. Additionally, ginger root is a wonderful all-around stomach aid. The herb has been shown to ameliorate dozens of stomach ailments, including nausea, gas, heartburn, flatulence, diarrhea and stomach

Page 23: BASHAN TIDINGS

flu. The main approach

to benefit the stomach's digestive process is to "build the digestive fire" by taldng herbs such as fresh cilantro, mint, and cumin, says Chris Clark, M.D., the medical director for the Maharishi Ayurveda health center at the Raj Resort in Fairfield, Iowa.

"It is also important to avoid overeating and eating foods that are too heavy or wrong for your body type," he adds.

The Chinese approach also involves moderation and the pre-<:rrintion of aids.

"When there are stomach or other digestive the best treatment is to cut down on eating, eat a bland diet and take digestives such as ginseng, fennel, clove, star anise, cardamon and saussurea," says BiB Brevoort, of a company in Eugene, Oregon, that manufactures Chinese herbal products. One of the best digestive herbs, he is hawthorn.

"Hawthorn is known in the West as a heart herb, but the reason it is helpful is that it creates so much it relieves the heart."

Plant enzymes are another uct worthy of promoting, as they function in the stomach by gesting food. This activity was first proposed in the 1920s by Edward

M.D., who then went on

to make it the focus of his life's work, to Alternative Therapies, compiled by The Burton Goldburg Group. Howell stated that "if the stomach is performing its proper role ... a large portion of

intake will be partially digested before reacting with the stronger juices found there."

This predigestion of as described in the same hap-pens in the 30 to 60 minutes before enough HCL has collected in the stomach, at which time the HCL deactivates the enzymes. These enzymes in the stomach can digest up to 40 percent of the starches, 30 percent of the proteins and 10 percent of the fats in less than one houL

Into the Small Intestine

Function: The small intestine is a coiled tube extending approximately 24 feet from the stomach to the intestine. Of the entire digestive the greatest amount of digestion and absorption tal(es place here. Because it has so many functions, the small intestine is divided into three parts: the first 12 inches or so is called the duodenum, the middle 9 feet is the jejunum, and the last 14 feet is the ileum.

Once chyme is released from the stomach into the duodenum,

Page 24: BASHAN TIDINGS

34 BASHAN TIDINGS

the small intestine sends for digestive secretions from the pancreas, gallbladder and liver. Chyme is released at varying rates depending on the density of the food and the effects of neuropeptides or other hormones that control gastrointestinal function.

Within the small intestine, the duodenum primarily absorbs minerals; the jejunum absorbs watersoluble vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins; and the ileum absorbs fat-soluble vitamins, cholesterol and bile salts. Murray and Pizzomo say that diseases involving the small intestine often result in malabsorption such as gluten intolerance, food allergies and intestinal infections.

Beneficial Products: Because the small intestine relies so heavily on enzymes produced by the other digestive organs, strengthening these organs is often a good way il:o strengthen the small intestine. Some factors that can adversely affect the small intestine and cause malabsorption include abnormal bacteria in the gut, vitamin A deficiency, decreased HCL and inflammation of the gut.

Supplementation with acidophilus products and HCL tablets as well as increasing vitamin A can help with a number of problems, but one of the most recommended solutions is fasting, which also has the benefit of aiding the other di-

gestive organs. When fasting, the body contin

ues excreting stored toxins while the intake of new toxins is decreased. To aid the fasting process, retailers can offer detoxifying teas with herbs such as dandelion root, sarsaparilla and burdock root; and cleansing organic such as celery, beet, parsley and carrots; as well as laxatives, such as cascara, psyllium and senna, to aid elimination. Aloe has also been used as a laxative and a tonifying agent for the entire gastrointestinal tract

The Power of the Pancreas

Fooction: When enters the duodenum, hormones send signals to the pancreas, which in tum sends enzymes for hydrolysis, a process where water is absorbed by a large food molecule, breaking it into smaller ones that are watersoluble and digestible by body cells.

Each the pancreas secretes about two and a half of pancreatic juices into the small intestine. Included in these are three enzymes that are essential to brealc-

down foods: lipase, which along with bile fats; amylase, which breaks starch molecules into smaller sugars; and protease, which breaks down protein molecules into single amino acids.

A deficiency in any of these

Page 25: BASHAN TIDINGS

VOLUl\IIE 11, NuMBER 2 35

enzymes can cause incomplete food digestion, leading to an assmtment of problems. In his book, Enzymes & Enzyme Thera~ py, Anthony Cichoke, states that a lack of pancreatic enzymes can cause one-third to one-half of the carbohydrates and proteins and a majority of fats entering the small intestine not to be absorbed, which ultimately leads to a loss of nutrition. Lack of enzymes can also contTibute to adult-onset diabetes, food and pancreatitis.

Beneficial Prooucts: There are a number of herbal pancreatic stimulants that also serve as tonics, including seed, barberry

mullein, lemon peel, saw palmetto and gentian root.

The Gallant Gallbladder

Ftmciioll: The gallbladder holds bile for the liver. Additionally, once the chyme hits the duodenum, it the gallbladder to secrete enzymes. One malfunction of the gallbladder occurs when the chemical composition of the bile is upset-such as when the liver puts too much cholesterol in it-and the

"''""'u''"""co" creates gallstones. Beneficial Products: As with the

small the gallbladder is benefited by the health of another digestive organ-the liver. For gallbladder inflammation, both dandelion and wild yam have been

used effectively. Tumeric is noted as a gallbladder stimulant.

The Liver Machine

Function: The liver is a hotbed of activity. It metabolizes proteins, carbohydrates and fats; detoxifies hormones, toxins and drugs; and manufactures bile, which is either secreted into the small intestine or stored in the gallbladder. Bile is important in the digestion of fat and fat soluble vitamins and also serves to keep the small intestine free from microorganisms.

Beneficial Products: Milk thistle the list of herbs to help the liver. It stimulates bile, protects against toxicity, increases protein synthesis and stabilizes liver cell membranes. artichoke protects the liver against toxins and has lipid-reducing and anticholesterol effects.

Ode to the Large Intestine

Fw1ction: The large intestine, which is about five feet in length, completes the of digestion. Extending from the ileum to the anus, it is subdivided into four sections. Its principal functions are to concentrate, store and excrete food wastes through absorption of water and electrolytes, A small amount of nutrient absorption also occurs. The colon contains large amounts

NOTICES

NEWS FROM BASHAN: Once again we rejoice in the beautiful spring weather that has come to the Ozarks. It is such a wonderful experience to witness the rebirth of nature. The trees that were bare and leafless are leafed out, with tender, beautiful shades of green. The dogwood, shadbush and redbud are in bloom. Though for only short periods of time, we are enjoying them while they last. The wild flowers will soon be out, and some of the perennials are already beginning to bloom. Beautiful indeed is God's Hill, which reminds us of the first time Brother M. J. Bingham saw Bashan and wrote the following:

"It is a densely wooded area, with several excellent building sites, and is a far more sightly spot than was Carmel. But there is plenty of work to be done clearing the forests and rocks for roads and building sites and to bring out the natural beauty of the woods .... Though rocky, the soil is very rich and can grow anything.

"Now that the Lord has led us to the Hill of Bashan, pray earnestly that He will burden hearts to lend all possible help and send all possible means to enable us to develop the place as a fitting headquarters for the Chariot of the

Lord."-11 TIE 2:55:5,6, "Remember Ye the Law of Moses," 1967 Edition. (See 1992 reprint, pp. 65, 66.)

We praise the Lord for those who have faithfully supported the work, and for others who have given of their time to help with the building and other projects here. Before its development, Bashan was beautiful, and now, with the present developments, it is indeed "Bashan the Beautiful."

The work on the Chapel continues both inside and outside, and the Lord has blessed the workers who are conscientiously working to see every part of the work done in the right way. Please continue to pray for these workers and for the work in all of the departments.

Right now the urgent need is for (1) a dedicated cook; (2) all-around workers for the Office, the outside, and the Machine Shop; and (3) a dedicated printer to help in the Print Shop. Any who are ablebodied and willing to be trained to fill any of these positions, please communicate with the Office. Please pray with us that if it is God's will, He will discover consecrated, dedicated persons to fill these positions as soon as possible. And pray that those of us who are here will be strengthened each day to carry the heavy responsibilities resting upon

us. FlF..LD 'I'RIP: Sister Bingham's field trip has taken her to Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados, and St. Lucia. She reports that the brethren are encouraged and have a new zeal to push the work forward in their respective areas. Please pray for the brethren and the work in Guyana and the islands. TO FOREIGN LEADERS AND MEM -

BERS: Because surface mail is so slow in reaching the foreign countries, we have been sending copies of all current publications to the leaders of the various groups by Air Mail Pdnted Matter. These are to be read or lent to the members until their copies arrive. We send these in bulk by Surface Mail to the leaders to be mailed or handed out to each member in the different countries. If any of you are not receiving the Newsletters or the Tidings, please let your leaders know right away. The leaders should inform the Office periodically the number of copies they need in order to save the Office time and postage in sending more copies than are needed.

When sending in addresses,

please be sure to put the full address, including the parish or comlty and the name of the country. If you have a page of names with the same parish, be sure to indicate this at the beginning of the page with the following notation as an example: "All these names are to be sent to St. Catherines, Jamaica." Be sure always to include the name of the country. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for those who are sick and afflicted, the discouraged, the married couples with problems, the aged, and the children and young adults. Pray for the workers both here at Bashan and in the field. Pray that more names and addresses win be sent in to the Office. Pray that the honest who receive the literature will come to see the light in the message, and take their stand with it. Pray that God will increase your burden and zeal to work in any line of endeavor to warn "the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Remember the day of prayer and fasting, and the work both in your area and here at headquarters. "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16. 0

INSPIRATION'S CHALLENGE

"The Shepherd's Rod, the books that Inspiration so named and whose contents It so inspired, being the only Rod in the world that can be heard speaking, the Lord commands that you should hear It, that you do not waste any time in deciding between the Rod literature and some other, for there is none other today than the Rod literature which God recommends you to hear. And when you hear the Rod, you will find yourself wrapped in the love of Christ and in the 'arms' of God. Try it."-2TG 34:28,29, 1948 Edition; 27:1, 1988 Edition.

"Now it is up to all of us individually to decide whether we should hear the voice of man or the Voice of God's Rod. This is now everyone's test, and it must be everyone's concern, for one of these two voices-the voice of men or the Voice of God's Rod-will determine everyone's destiny either for eternal death or for eternallife."-lTG 27:8:1, 1953 Edition; 8:2, 1984 Edition.
