Beauchamps News Issue 50 Spring Term - February 2017 An Evening Of Celebration Of Exam Results And Prizewinners Headteacher’s Letter Dear Parents, Our recent Presentation Evening was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of our students who sat their GCSE and A-Level exams last year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff involved in organising the event and thank you to all the students and family members who attended. It was also fantastic to see so many parents attending the recent Progress Evenings for Years 10 and 11. I am pleased to say that parents were on the whole very positive about the progress of their children and the support, revision and tracking that is in place to ensure that students are well prepared to achieve their best in their public exams. Finally, congratulations to Miss Leahy who won the New Teacher of the Year Award at the Essex Teaching Awards Ceremony this month (see p3 of the newsletter). Miss Leahy teaches English and has been with us since 2015. It is a tremendous achievement to win such a prestigious award and Miss Leahy will now represent Essex at the National Teaching Awards later this year. Miss Hunter, Miss Randall and Mr Barnett all recieved Special Recognition Awards, after being nominated by fellow colleagues and students. Congratulations to all of them. We know we have a team of fantastic teachers here at our school but it is especially nice when it is recognised by others. What a fantastic start to 2017! Mr Hodges, Headteacher Beauchamps High School students past and present were invited to attend the school’s annual Presentation Evening on Thursday 5 January. The evening was, as ever, a fantastic event and a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements and successes of our students at GCSE and A-Level. It is always a great pleasure to host the Presentation Evening celebrations, but it is especially the case at a time when the school is judged as Outstanding by Ofsted. As well as handing out exam certificates and celebrating the fantastic results achieved, we also had the honour of awarding fourteen special trophies to exceptional students. It was not easy to decide on the prize winners because so many students could have qualified for some awards. Several teachers were nominated by their students and fellow teachers and the Senior Leadership Team endorsed nominations for Miss Leahy and Miss Hunter in the New Teacher of the Year category and Miss Randall and Mr Barnett in the Secondary Teacher of the Year category.Miss Randall, Miss Hunter and Mr Barnett received “Special

Recognition”, but unfortunately were not shortlisted for the winners awards. However, Miss Leahy was shortlisted and attended the prestigious Awards Evening held at the Marconi Centre in Chelmsford on 2 February. It was a very formal event hosted by Martin and Sue from Heart Essex radio and there were many dignitaries from the county to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the teachers that had been shortlisted. The evening was made all the better when it was announced that Miss Leahy had WON the award for New Teacher of the Year, which is a fantastic

achievement. She will now be put forward as the Essex representative in the National Teaching Awards. Congratulations to Miss Leahy and our other staff that received special recognition! Report by Mr Harper

Music Department Discover ‘A Whole New World!’Just before the Christmas break, on the

15 December, members of the school choir and GCSE Music students travelled to London's West End to see 'Aladdin' at 'The Prince Edward Theatre'.

This type of trip was to gain fantastic experience of how professionals perform on the West End stage and how singers interact with each other. Not only did students gain from the sheer professionalism on display but also the wonderful entertainment.Jacob N Year 8 said "It was interesting to hear the different voice ranges" and Amy L Year 9 added "The singers were a fantastic influence on us and gave us ideas for interpreting our own songs". Aaron H said "They made it look so easy but you can tell that a lot of work and effort went into it"We had a fabulous time and this was the perfect way to end a very

Also, just before the Christmas break, our school choir gave an outstanding performance of traditional Christmas carols and songs for our dear residents at The Grange Residential Home.We visit the home every year, and each year our audience grows and never fails to join in with the singing. It was so special to see the residents smiling faces again, joining in with the songs, and in the interval, chatting with our choir members, sharing

memories and simply celebrating Christmas again. It is quite an occasion for The Grange and they always prepare soft drinks, cakes and biscuits for us all in the interval. It's always sad to leave them at the end but I just know that we do help

to create the Christmas Spirit for them and for us too!Report by Mr Byford

On the lead up to Christmas, Year 7 students attended a session led by the Local Church Representatives on the meaning of Christmas. Rev E Cordie from the Wickford Reformed Baptist Church, Mrs Suzanne Ward from the Wickford Christian Centre, Rev Matt Simpkins from St Andrew’s Church and Mr Paul Waldron from the Salvation Army spoke about the Christian message of Christmas, demonstrated through video clips and group discussions.Students participated well in the activities and some challenged the Church Representatives with interesting questions. Competition Winners: Christmas is a busy time in the Library at Beauchamps High School. This year we had three competitions running during December. The winner of the prize for the best book recommendation in the form of a mini Christmas tree was Kai B in 7B. Highly Commended prizes went to Lucy A 7E, Paige B 7E, Star H 7P, Ellie O 7M, Amber P 7E, Beau R 7A, Katie R 7U, Sophie S 7H, Daisy S 7A, George T 7M, Naomi W 7A and Hannah W 7E. The Year 7 work was displayed on the Library Christmas tree and around the room.We also ran a Six Word Story Competition and received some very inventive and thoughtful entries. The idea was to convey a whole back-plot in just six words. Our winning entry came from Rocco H in 7H with, "Siri, delete Mum from my contacts". Highly Commended prizes went to Alyssa M, 8H, India M, Amy F and Emily H from 7B. This was a hard competition to

judge, with lots of imaginative entries. Our third competition was the highly popular Literary Advent Calendar.

Each day during December, a quote from a popular book for children or young adults was displayed in the Library. Anyone who could correctly identify the book from which it came received a sweet and their name was added to the correct answers list. At the end of December, Phoebe H in 7B had the most correct answers and won our main prize.

Well done to all our winners and thanks to everyone who took part.

World Book Week: It is not long until Beauchamps High School’s Library will once again be hosting World Book Week; a week-long

celebration of World Book Day, with author visits, competitions, quizzes and book giveaways. To start our promotion of this event, we ran a competition to find out what makes Beauchamps a ‘School of Books’. Our Year 7 students were asked to create a flyer for a book that they found inspiring and wanted to share with others. We had some amazing entries and have made a book of the wide variety of flyers created. This will act as an inspiration for students who are not sure what to read next. The very worthy winner of this competition was Aimee M of 7E, seen in this photograph with her beautiful, pom-pom and glitter bedecked flyer for the Geek Girl series by Holly Smale.

On the 17 January 2017 our Year 9 students took part in a morning careers event where they were helped to consider how to choose their GCSE options.

Four activities were organised. First there was an options talk with Mrs Pepper where students were asked to consider their personal strengths and talents and use this personal appraisal to decide which subjects were most suited to their personality etc.The students were then given an introduction to KUDOS which is an internet based careers programme

Year 9 Careers DayHelping To Choose The Right Options For The Future

which students can use whenever they wish and from any computer with internet capacity. All students will have their own log in.They then took part in a team building activity where students were put into groups and needed to decide the roles of the team so that they could plan how they were going to achieve the challenge they were given. Then finally, volunteers from a range of local businesses and employment sectors came into school to give short talks on how they got to the position they currently hold. Their ‘career journey’ if you will. Students were able to ask questions of the guests and they were told how academic subjects from their own school career influenced their career decisions and how subjects have been useful in the work place. Guests were able to talk about many careers such as

banking, floristry, self employment, engineering, construction, business admin, education, hairdressing, local and County councils and semi-professional football.

Hopefully our students will be better prepared to make choices about their GCSE option decisions as a result of the activities organised for them.Report by Mrs Mills Dip CGD; Future Focus Careers Consultancy.Mrs Mills will be available at both the Options Open Evening and Year 9 Progress Evening to discuss any concerns with both students and parents.

Guardian Young Critics AwardYear 7 Students Create Front Page News!

On Friday 20 January, thirty-two Year 7 students attended a workshop at the Guardian Education Centre. Last term, thirteen Year 7 students won a national competition which required them to review a shortlisted list of children’s literature and as a result were awarded with this chance

to experience life at the newspaper’s headquarters in London. The students experienced a day in the life of a journalist. They were guided

through the preparation and work that occurs prior to publishing a news report. In the heart of where the daily

publication gets produced, students produced their own front pages in pairs. With big news stories such as Donald Trump’s inauguration day and an earthquake in Italy, students had the serious task of collating research to inform their reports. They had to work to tight deadlines to produce

quality writing that covered the main events of each story. At the end of the day, Guardian editor, Claire A r m i t s t e a d , came to visit the class and review their work. She was t h o r o u g h l y impressed by the quality of writing and d i s c u s s e d the images

students had selected to go alongside their stories. Overall the students enjoyed their day. One student stated that “it was a really exciting experience which has made me consider this for a job in the future”. The students each received a copy of their final front page and are very proud of their

achievements. Turn to the back page for some samples of the students fantastic work on their front page news! More can be seen on our website too.Report by Miss Leahy

TogetherEveryoneAchieves More

The Essex Schools County Cross Country Championships were held at Hilly Fields, Colchester, on Saturday 21 January 2017

A cold and frosty morning greeted the athletes who were competing. Recent weather conditions made the course challenging with hard ground under foot and ice in patches, it made parts of the course particularly

slippery. Beauchamps High School had three representatives who had qualified as top finishers at the recent District Cross Country Championships. Ella W in Year 8 ran with the Junior Girls, Cameron W in Year 9 ran with the Junior Boys and Tom R in Year 10 ran with the Intermediate Boys. The three students competed for the Basildon District. Ella showed true grit and determination competing as part of the lower age group in the Junior Girl’s race finishing a fantastic 40th position and she still has another year left to compete in this age group. The students competed against the best athletes in Essex and put up a

good fight with all of our runners finishing in top sixty positions, with up to one hundred competitors in each race. The cold, frosty conditions did not put these dedicated athletes off, the students ran extremely well and should be very proud of their achievements. Well done. Report by Miss Stibbs

t Its competition season in the business department and we are on the lookout for students who are up to the challenge. We have opportunities for students in Years 8, 9, and 10 to test their business abilities and learn some new skills along the way. Please read on for further details.

National Enterprise Challenge 2017 We are once again giving all Year 8 students the opportunity to take part in the National Enterprise Challenge, a competition run by Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis. We have had huge success in the past winning the whole competition in 2015, as well as having teams make the final in both 2014 and 2016, so a high bar has been set for Beauchamps students.

The Ryman National Enterprise Challenge is a UK-wide competition for schools, involving real businesses which set the challenges for the students. The competition, designed to develop enterprise and entrepreneurial thinking, asks teams to develop, design and pitch a new product to a team of industry experts. The first round is held here at school, where teams are taken off timetable for the day to undertake preliminary work on their proposal. We then send one team to the National competition where only the best groups are invited to the final round where they present their idea to the judging panel, including Theo Paphitis, in front of an audience of over 1000 spectators. If you would like to be involved, the Business department will be holding auditions in the West Hall from 3pm – 4pm on 27 February 2017. In teams of six, you will pitch your idea of what it takes to be an entrepreneur and why you will be successful. Be creative, innovative and confident as places

are limited.See any of the staff in the Business Department to register your teams’ place. We look forward to hearing from you all.

Tenner ChallengeFour select groups of GCSE

Business Studies students will soon be undertaking the Tenner Challenge. This challenge will see students set up and begin running their own businesses using only £10 as their start up fund. Students previously have created wonderful business ideas to turn their £10 into profit. Businesses are challenged to start up and run for four weeks trying to make as much money as possible and to have a social impact. At the end of the challenge the teams will be able to keep all of the profit they have made

throughout the four trading weeks. Teams on average make around £100 profit. Students will learn key skills throughout this challenge as well as enhancing their keen business minds and becoming budding entrepreneurs. If you would like to get involved and haven’t received an official invite, please see Miss Bell for more details.Mr Goodacre and the Business Team

UKMT Maths CompetitionA number of students from Years 12 and 13 have recently taken part in the annual United Kingdom Maths Trust Maths Challenge. The Challenge involves sitting a 25 question multiple choice exam in under 90 minutes.
