ThankyouforcomingtoBeckett18! The 18th (ish) installment of plays and texts by Sam-uel Beckett: a Loefflerian celebration of absurdist theatre, brought to you by the Theatre Alumni Group with support from the students, staff and faculty of UBC Theatre. All the proceeds from ticket sales go straight into the Peter Loeffler Memorial Award in Theatre -- an award which supports young students while they pursue a theatre education.

I am proud to say that proceeds from our past fundraisers have contributed to move the award from providing $250 a year (2004) to $1700 in 2017! For those of you who have joined us over the years, our collective thanks for helping us move the endowment for-ward, and for supporting the students at UBC Theatre. My thanks to the actors, staff and students who donate their time to this fundraising project.

For this evening, we present four short works by or inspired by Beckett: Footfalls, a hauntingly rhytmic look at a woman caught between the past and the present, Boys in the Bright White Sports Car -- a short movie inspired by the text of Beckett’s novel Mercier and Camier, the return of the Godotian Biddies in the Boat, the continuing saga of two women lost at sea -- inspired by Beckett’s Texts for Nothing--and finally Krapp’s Last Tape, a play about how a writer remembers his life on the eve of what may be his final birthday. When our resident alumna curator, Ms. Beverly Bardal, brought all these shows together for an evening of work, I was unaware of just how well they would resonante with each other. I won’t describe these resonances here, but I do look forward to hearing what you, our patrons, discover and discuss over some cake and champagne* in the lobby after the show.

Which brings me to my penultimate note for this year: Dr. Peter Loeffler, for whom this show is always dedicated. Peter Loeffler was an inspirational professor and a man who re-ally loved a good party after a show. After each performance we offer a piece of cake and a glass of bubbly (for those of age) and invite you to stay for a bit and relax. Its a chance to meet old friends, other alum, chat with the actors after the show -- but most importantly, to celebrate theatre. Peter loved that idea and our little group takes care to carry it forward.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the 60th anniversary of the Department of Theatre and Film. In 1958, Dorothy Somerset created the space for theatre arts on this campus and was the first Head of our illustrious program. We are here tonight because of her vision and efforts. And I wish to awknowledge this theatre, the Frederic Wood. Take a look at those teak walls around you and reflect on the history they have absorbed over the years. It is a gem of a theatre and we are honoured to play in it.

My thanks to you for attending this fund raiser and supporting students. May you have a wonderful year ahead.

Gerald Vanderwoude

BEVERLY BARDAL - FOOTFALLS & BIDDIES IN THE BOATBeverly (BFA ’91) has worked in film, television and on stage, but her focus remains on theatre. She develops solo concepts and group collaborations with various partners to create theatre pieces. For twenty years, Bever-ly and her husband have explored the work of Samuel Beckett, creating the “Beckett Birthday Bash I-V”, “The Beckett Cent Festival”, “Who’s There?” “Listen...Look Here”, “Nothing Has Already Happened”, and “nothing prevents anything”. Other Beckett works include “Happy Days”, “Rockaby”, “Come and Go”, “Not I”, “Play” and “Eh Joe”. She is continuing work on a 40+ year project on Rockaby that should culminate when she is about 75 – stay tuned! She is delighted to be back for this student fundraiser, and is the an effusively proud mother of two most beautiful souls, Nina P. and Harry L. She is married to the second sexiest man alive...still.

DEB PICKMAN - BIDDIES IN THE BOATUBC Theatre & Film alumna Deb Pickman is a co-artistic director of the Vancouver based theatre company shameless hussy. A two-time Jessie Richardson nominee, Deb earned the Vancouver Sun’s People’s Choice Award for the one woman play My Left Breast. Favourite roles for the hussies include Sonofabitch Stew; the drunken Life of Calamity Jane, Marion Bridge, Frozen and most recently Love Bomb. She toured internationally in 7 plays for Green Thumb, including One in a Million and New Canadian Kid. Deb relishes her role at UBC as the Marketing & Communications Manager for UBC’s Arts & Culture District. If memory serves, this is Deb’s 5th foray with the annual Beckett pranksters.

JOE PROCYK - BOYS IN THE BRIGHT WHITE SPORTS CARJoe Procyk, a longtime admirer of the works of Beckett, graduated from the BFA Acting program in 1999. He always enjoys performing in the Freddy Wood and is grateful to be working once again with all the wonderful people involved in the productions for The Peter Loeffler Memorial Award.

CAMERON CRONIN - BOYS IN THE BRIGHT WHITE SPORTS CARCam Cronin is a proud graduate of the UBC Department of Theatre and Film; graduating with a BA in The-atre….sometime ago. He then spent 20 years working in front of the camera perfecting such roles as Lawyer #2 and FBI Tech. Some of his most important film work was accomplished via contacts with film makers he first met at UBC way back then, proving it might be about ‘who you know.’ He reached some important personal milestones, like having a film premiere at TIFF, along with several films at VIFF and also blowing up (literally) as a terrorist in a fantastically bad movie of the week. Cam also produced educational media content for the HR MacMillian Planetarium’s 360 degree dome theatre, working with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency for over ten years. Cam would like to thank his very understanding (and super!) family, (Sophie, Cooper and Rosie) for their patience around all the rehearsals, missed dinners and line readings they have had to deal with; this show wouldn’t be possible without them.

NORMAN YOUNG - BOYS IN THE BRIGHT WHITE SPORTS CARNorman Young is a legendary figure in the British Columbia entertainment world. A UBC Professor Emeritus, Young is Co-Founder of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame and a former member of the Canada Council. For many years he was Chair of the Vancouver Civic Theatres Board and for this received the Civic Merit Award from the City of Vancouver. He is a founder of the BC Arts Festival, was Chair of the BC Arts Board and has been a Director of the Vancouver Museum, The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, the Vancouver Archives and the Vancouver Children’s Festival, and is Honorary Vice-President of PAL Vancouver. This is Norman’s sixth show with the Theatre Alumni Group, having been cast in The Master Builder (2010), Who’s There? (2012), Listen…Look here (2013), Beckett 15 (2015). He was taught by Dorothy Somerset.

CHRIS HUMPHREYS - KRAPP’S LAST TAPEChris (CC) Humphreys has performed on stages from London’s West End to Hollywood’s 20th Century Fox. Fa-vourite stage roles include Hamlet, Jack Absolute, Oberon, and his two previous collaborations with tonight’s director – as Zastrozzi in Zastrozzi and as Solness in Ibsen’s The Master Builder at the Telus Studio in 2009. On screen favourites are Clive Parnell in Coronation Street, Caleb the gladiator in NBC’s AD – Anno Domini, PC Turnham in The Bill, Graham Ashe in Highlander and the original voice of Salem the cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. A writer, his adaptation of his novel Shakespeare’s Rebel premiered at Bard on the Beach in 2015. In that year his novel, Plague won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel and he also graduated from UBC with his MFA in Creative Writing. His latest novel is Chasing the Wind about 1930’s aviatrix and thief, Roxy Loewen.

PETER LOEFFLER MEMORIAL AWARD RECIPIENTS

PROFESSOR EMERITUS, PETER LOEFFLERPeter Loeffler began teaching at UBC in 1972 for thirty years taught theatre history to undergraduate and graduate students. His Introduction to Theatre course inspired first-year students to appreciate the power of theatre and its importance. He was a dedicated mentor for countless students from all special-ties within the Department of Theatre. Peter passed away on January 18, 2002.

“To me, students are like little trees that, as a teacher, you plant in the soil. Some of them grow tall, some short, some side ways...but they all grow and become part of a wonderful forrest” - quote from a 6am conversation.
