From the Principal’s Desk…
Dear Families,
Welcome back! I’m finding it incredible to believe that we are
already into the last term of the 2018 school year! I hope all families
had a fantastic holiday break and had the opportunity to relax in
preparation for another high activity term.
For all those Collingwood and Melbourne Storm supporters, I hope
you have recovered from the disappointment of the Grand Final
losses - certainly a different outcome to last year’s finals excitement.
Nevertheless - the AFL grand final in particular was certainly a nail
biter - a great game of football to watch - if you were not a supporter
of either team!
Hats! Hats! Hats!
At Monday morning assembly it was wonderful to see so
many children wearing their school hats. This is a timely
reminder that at school we have the school hat as a
compulsory part of the school uniform during term four. Please ensure
that the hat is labelled clearly with your son or daughter’s name and
is included on a daily basis in the school bag. It is really important that
as a school community we encourage our children to support our
‘SunSmart’ policy and be sun smart.
*Remember in terms one and four - NO HAT…. NO PLAY!
As we move into the warmer weather it is also timely to
remember the sunscreen. Sunscreen is available in each
classroom – however it might be a good idea to slap
some on in the morning before leaving for school.
Spring has Sprung!
Along with the much welcome sunshine and
blossoms of Spring comes the not so welcome
increase in the incidents of hay fever and asthma.
As the trees start to bloom and the pollen is
released into the atmosphere, allergy sufferers
begin their annual ritual of sniffling and sneezing,
and their eyes begin to water and itch. Please be
mindful that if you are sending your child to school with any form of
hay fever medication – you must complete the Medication
Distribution Form, which you will find on the school website under the
‘Policies’ tab. (Teacher’s will also have copies in their classroom for
you if needed). Children must give all medication to their classroom
teacher, along with the distribution form for their classroom teacher
to administer.
Division Athletics
Congratulations to Ava (5/6G), Owais (5/6B), Jacob (3/4W) Archie
(3/4D), Isabelle (3/4D), Amelia (5/6B) and Siena J (3/4D) who
competed in Division Athletics yesterday at the Bill Stewart Athletic
Track in Burwood. A further congratulations to Archie for coming first
PRIDE RESPONSIBILITY RESPECT INTEGRITY COMMITMENT 2
in his age group for shot put and Ava for coming second in 100m and third in long jump. They are
pretty excited about competing at regional level next Thursday. Well done to all of you and good luck
Archie and Ava. We are all really proud of you.
Swimming
Years 3 – 6 hit the ground running this term with swimming lessons beginning today, the first Thursday of
term 4! It is fantastic to see the majority of students accessing the swimming program as it is absolutely
essential that every child learn to swim and to be water-safe in and around water. With the warmer
weather just around the corner and particularly as the children get older and begin to have pool
parties with friends – we need to be sure that our children are competent, confident swimmers.
The Prep – 2 swimming program begins on Monday 12th November. After each lesson, the students
have to get dried off and changed very quickly before boarding the bus back to school. Hopefully
you will be practising this skill at home – ensuring your child independently dries off and changes
quickly, so that they are ready to go when swimming lessons come around.
If you are available or would like to assist during the swimming program please let your child’s
classroom teacher know, but it is also essential that you hold a current Working With Children’s Check.
Buildings and Grounds
Gate - we have had a new gate installed in the Staff Car Park. This gate will be closed during
school hours. (8:45am - 4:00pm). This will ensure that we are keeping our students safe - particularly
when walking to and from the top playground.
Oval – has been mown, aerated and reseeded. We were hoping for a little bit of rain to help with
the new growth.
Asphalt - we have had some areas of the asphalt cut out and patched up - and the asphalt
surrounding the Admin Building should have been rejuvenated last Wednesday and Thursday to
give it a fresh new feel. Unfortunately the work was not completed due to weather - and will be
carried out, over a weekend, in the coming weeks. Once this is complete we will look at having
new 2/4/6 square lines painted.
Planting - Leo has planted another row of Hebies in the garden bed between the Admin Building
and the BER. We still have a little bit of planting to go.
A Working Bee for all families is being organised for Sunday 28th October 10 –12pm Jobs to be completed are:
Weeding garden surrounding Admin Building and Veggie Patch
(Big focus on cleaning up around the veggie patch – poor Trudi and Susan are doing a
great job of the veggie beds – but are working in chaos!)
(More) Planting of garden bed along BER
Mulch Moving
2 hours Sunday Morning - 10 - 12pm…the more the merrier and the quicker we can get
our grounds looking fabulous!
Reports – Sentral
In line with our aim of becoming a 5 star sustainable school – at the end of term we will be going
paperless, making our Semester 2 reports available to parents through the parent portal on Sentral. On
Monday 17th September, we sent individual letters home letters with step by step instructions on how
to log in with your unique log in code and create an access account.
To date we only have 30 families log in. As with any change – this will take some time to process and
iron out any ‘issues’ that may arise – so we ask that you assist us by signing in as soon as possible – and
let us know of any issues you encounter along the way (although it should be fairly simple).
Again, we will be working towards enabling parents to lodge absences and view the school
newsletter through this same portal (eventually) but we need to ensure we have everyone signed up
and access granted first.
*Reports will be available on line only – so sign in asap!
Social and Emotional Learning
Term 4 can be quite tumultuous for all students, but especially for our year 6
students. They are in that phase of thinking they are ready for high school, ‘over’
being at primary school, but at the same time feel anxious about moving on. They
can become quite emotional and at times irrational – so now more than ever we
need to be mindful of how we treat each other and the words we use with each
other.

being kind hurts no one, but benefits everyone!

Planning for 2019 is now underway. It is essential that the school is notified of any student in Grades
