Benson students receive a four-year comprehensive academic program and the elective program is focused upon professional/technical education. Honors classes are available, as well as advanced science and math classes. Benson is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. Students may earn college credits while at Benson. About 84 percent of our students go on to college and attend schools such as MIT, Stanford, Howard University, Oregon State University, PSU, PCC and MHCC. How can I arrange a visit? Call our main office to schedule an individual or group tour.Your personalized tour will be led by one of our student guides. What is distinctive about Benson’s faculty? Our teaching staff has an average of 18 years of experience, and 49 percent of them have a Master’s Degree or higher. When should I apply? Open enrollment period is usually from mid-January to mid-February. Students must complete a School Choice Form to request a transfer to Benson and submit it by the deadline to be considered. All Benson transfer requests will be entered into a computerized lottery to fill the available openings each year. If you have a brother or sister enrolled in Benson, your chances are increased. What professional/technical programs and majors are offered? Professional/Technical Education programs and their majors offered at Benson include: Communications (Radio, Photo/Video, Desktop Publishing,Web Design); Construction; Drafting (Architectural Drafting, Engineering Drafting); Electric/Electronics (Computer Software, Electric, Electrical Mechanical, Electronic Engineering, Micro-Computer); Health Occupations (Nursing Assisting, Medical Assisting/Emergency Medicine, Dental Assisting); Manufacturing Engineering, and Transportation (Automotive, Aviation). How many students earn the CIM at Benson? Last year, 39 percent of Benson graduates were awarded the Certificate of Initial Mastery, the best showing in Portland Public Schools. Several majors already offer a Certificate of Advanced Mastery, including the Health Services CAM and the Communications CAM. What is Professional/Technical Education? Professional/Technical Education is a multi-year sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical skills that can lead a student to higher levels of skill attainment over time. Benson’s PTE programs have a unifying career theme that organizes the curriculum and has a clear link between high school and post-high school targeted educational needs. Students can earn up to 22 college credits for their professional/technical course work as well as credit for passing Advanced Placement tests. A BRIEF HISTORY SIMON BENSON, the son of immigrants from Nor- way, moved to the Northwest almost penni- less. He drove a logging team, and eventually started his own logging business. He invented a more efficient way to transport logs on the riv- ers to their markets and finally achieved wealth, becoming one of the Northwest’s great philanthropists. In addition to donating scenic land in the Columbia River Gorge, including Multnomah Falls and Benson State Park, he is also responsible for building The Benson Hotel. He be- lieved a comprehensive academic and trade school formed a solid foundation for a student’s future, and in 1915 do- nated $100,000 to create such a school — provided it was matched by the Port- land School Board.The new school opened in the fall of 1920. It was made up of two separate divisions, Building Trades and Machinery Trades. A boy spent three years rotating through the departments in one of the divisions, and his senior year was required to major, or specialize, in one department.The aca- demic work for both divisions was the same, and qualified students to attend Oregon Agricultural College (now OSU) or another Pacific Coast college.The same holds true today. “The technical form of education,” a city official wrote in 1920, “...gives the boys a chance to use their hands and brains in unity .... WHY WILL PTE BE IMPORTANTOVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS?Employment in the Construction and

Extraction trades will see a 10.3% in-crease statewide in the 10-year periodfrom 2002–2012, resulting in 6,898 newjobs and 13,077 replacement jobs aspeople retire, according to the OregonEmployment Department.

In the Metro area, Construction andExtraction jobs will mirror the statewideprojections with an estimated 2,525 newand nearly 5,000 replacement openings.

Trades in demand will include brick-layers, carpenters, electricians, laborers,concrete finishers, operating engineers,and structural metal ironworkers. Eachof these trade groups is projected to ex-perience 8.4% to 11.6% growth in the10-year study period. Many of these jobswill be related to public transportationprojects and are targeted to increasework force diversity.
