It’s us again – the young folks of Berriew
And what they are doing in St Beuno’s
Over the years we have all enjoyed Halloween activity. But when those of us – who are
not so young –the activities were mainly visiting friends in costume and offering some
entertainment – collecting pennies for ourselves – or sometimes for charity. The
response from the folks whose doors we knocked – gave us pennies and sometimes
some sweets. There was never any evil or sinister part to what we did. Over the years the
trick or treat influence from the big Continent to our western side – has – in some places
taken on a more sinister approach – and the occult has crept in to some of the things that
are celebrated now.
Here in Berriew we have celebrated – ‘So it’s not Halloween’. Still with apple bobbing,
catching the sticky scone on a rope – searching for marshmallows among the icing sugar
– getting a bit wet and having fun!
But we have been reminded that Halloween is All Hallows eve. – The night before All
Saints day. And we have searched for the light of Christ to lift our spirits – to remember
our loved ones now with our Heavenly Father – and to give thanks for all that is for our
good in our world.
Both the Little saints and the Teen seekers meetings enjoyed time together as they
played the games – and shared the light – and made some lanterns, happy masks – and
prayer memory trees – the latter now in church – if you would like to add some names of
those now in heaven – please do.
May the Christ light shine in all our hearts.
And Don’t Forget!

Berriew W.I.
At the October meeting of Berriew W.I. we entertained guests from other W.I.s. After the
singing of 'Jerusalem' Sue Usmar, the President, welcomed everyone and then
introduced the speakers who were Ruth and Cecil Hayward. They had brought along a
variety of musical instruments, both brass and woodwind, and they gave us various
classical and lighter renditions with keyboard accompaniment. It was a thoroughly
entertaining evening enjoyed by all. Afterwards supper was served and the raffle drawn.
Representatives of the visiting W.I.s gave a vote of thanks to Berriew W.I. for such a
lovely evening.
On October 21st we looked forward to an outing to Lychgate Tearoom for a cookery
demonstration by Sarah Cullen-Jones.
Wednesday November 4th
is the A.G.M. This meeting is held in the Community Centre
at 7.15pm. The A.G.M. is followed by a Beetle Drive and quiz on Pop Groups of the 60's.
On Wednesday December 2nd
, again in the Community Centre, Lynda Kipass is the
speaker. She will talk about the history of Christmas cards, to be followed by mince pies
and mulled wine. This should get everyone into a festive spirit, so do come along and
join us.

Members of Berriew W.I. celebrating 100 years of the W.I. movement
BERRIEW W.I SCRAPBOOK FOR 1965 50 years ago my Mother-Margaret Tombs of Hamptons- was a member of Berriew W.I and in 1965 she
was given the task of producing a Scrapbook “of Berriew” to celebrate 50 years of the WI.
I had left Berriew for pastures new and so never saw the results of her work.
However about 5years before her death in 2012 she had the chance to see her scrapbook again .This
time I was able to see it-and fearing I would never see it again-I took some “copies” of the Scrapbook
articles & photos-for my own Berriew Memories.
Now seeing that it is 100 years since the founding of the W.I in Anglesey - I feel it is the right time to
show my ” ill gotten gains” from this 1965 Scrapbook to a wider audience.
So I have put together 2 montages of photos from this Scrapbook. The choice is purely arbitrary-mainly
based on the quality of the photo.
The names of the People in the photos are from Mum –with 2unknown & one I can’t read Mum’s
writing.

The Gleave family wish to thank all their neighbours, and especially Sandra and
Lawrence for their help, and support during John's long illness.
The Montgomery doctors and the district nurses gave all possible attention to him during
the final months. John was a modest man, he had travelled the world but was always
content to return to Abernant amongst friends and neighbours. His work for people who
had been disabled and disfigured by tropical diseases was outstanding. He was a
husband, father and grandfather of whom we were very proud.
We were fortunate to have had the Venerable Peter visit us and bring communion several
times this year and to have him to conduct the funeral service. His guidance was much
appreciated.
All donations have been forwarded to Cancer Research U.K.

My name is Rosemary Lee and I am searching for a photo of my late great aunt and
uncle to put in the family archive. My relatives lived at Waterloo Farm, Berriew for
many years before they retired to a bungalow nearby. We as a family spent many happy
holidays there as children and even today aged 56 I can still remember the lovely fresh
smell of a morning there. Their names were Louisa and Norman Harris and they had no
children, but Norman had family in Llandrindod Wells. Our Welshpool members of the
family stem from the name of Wilcox, aunty Louisa was in fact a Wilcox, originally
from Chirbury, but my great grandfather, worked at Powys Castle as a
labourer/farmhand, and another place mentioned is Little Braggington Hall and Castle
Caereinion Farm . If anyone has a photo or interesting story about them I would be very
grateful if they would contact me.

Bonfire and Plot
Collecting the wood from the fields and the skips,
Stacking and packing to a pointed tip,
Setting the Guy proudly on top,
Surveying the crowds that remember his plot.
A night round the bonfire with family and friends,
Feeling the heat as the wood burns and bends,
Faces all glowing in the heat by the fire,
as they watch flames flickering higher and higher.
Sparks, flames and fireworks light up the night sky,
Patterns of sparklers reflect in children's eyes,
Burning of Guy Fawkes full of fun and delight,
A glimmering, shimmering annual event.

Powys Citizens Advice
Friends and family can be a “lifeline to support” for victims of domestic abuse, says Powys
Citizens Advice.
Powys Citizens Advice is highlighting that as many as 1 in 3 people in Powys may know someone who
is suffering from domestic abuse, but that many will not know how best to help.
On the back of new research from the national charity Citizens Advice, Powys Citizens Advice is
raising awareness of specialist helplines people can call if they suspect someone they know may be in
an abusive relationship.
Whilst friends and family in Powys can play a key role encouraging victims to seek specialist help,
Powys Citizens Advice says they currently face difficulties in helping victims this way.
Muriel Ryan, County Manager at Powys Citizens Advice said:
“Family and friends can be a lifeline to support for victims of domestic abuse in Powys. Those
suffering from domestic abuse may feel unable to reach out for help themselves, so people who want to
support them need to know the steps they can take and where they can get specialist help.
“We are joining the national Talk About Abuse campaign so we can help ordinary people know how to
recognise abuse, talk about it safely, enable victims to make the right decisions for themselves. If you
are experiencing domestic violence or abuse, or you are concerned someone you know might be in an
abusive relationship, you can seek help by calling confidential freephone helplines. You can also get
help and support from Powys Citizens Advice.”
The helplines people can call are:
• If the victim is a woman, you can get help from the freephone, twenty-four hour National
Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247 (run in partnership by Refuge and Women's Aid).
• If the victim is a man, you can get help from the Men's Advice Line on 0808 801 0327.
• If the victim is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, you can get specialised help from Broken
Rainbow on 0300 999 5428.
• If you live in Wales you can call the bilingual Live Fear Free national helpline on 0808 80 10
800.

The Tom Cat Spot
Hello everyone and so to November. Hopefully some dry, crisp mornings followed by
warm sunshine on our shortened hours of daylight. Plenty of things to keep us busy.
Berriew still going strong in league 2, two big motor sport events, Wales Rally GB and
the RAC Rally (the Roger Albert Clark that is) and a whole host of pre-christmas events.
Do you remember when Christmas started in December. It was evident in some shops in
July/August this year!!
Time to plant tulips and daffs for a spring show and to sew sweet peas for an early
display next year. Also a good time of year to clear all of the leaves and other burnables
in the garden and have a good bonfire.
Of course when November 5th
comes around we celebrate the Gunpowder Plot in the
Houses of Parliament. There was nothing finer than standing in the back garden in the
pouring rain trying to light the blue touch paper then retire!! So please to remember the
5th
of November, light up the sky with ?? fireworks. But whose, as the slogan said?
Of course there was some debate about the petrol brand name and I have had several
shouted at me, Regent, Shell even Esso but it was Anglo. Still what's in a name!
Until next month. Keep smiling.
Tom Cat.
