Letter from our President BHS Parent Teacher Organization November 2013 Newsletter Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Please take a moment to thank your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who all work together to make our community a wonderful place. And, my thanks to all of you who give your time and support to help make our high school a great environment for our students. Many thanks to our Hospitality Committee: Cecilia Rose, Therese Donoghue, Colleen Lipinski, and Helen Cossio who planned and implemented a delicious Fall luncheon for all teachers and staff members on October 30th. This is just one way we show our appreciation for our terrific BHS Staff! I hope you'll join us for our November 20th Morningline presentation on "Social Media Beyond Facebook: What Parents Need to Know". Learn how social media fits into the daily lives of tweens and teens, both during and after school. Hear about new trends in social media, including Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Pintrest, plus an interactive student perspective, and, how middle and high schoolers use social media. Our Senior Celebration Committee of Michelle Lovelace, Michele Kushner, Janine O'Leary and Traci Moews have been hard at work raising funds for the annual Senior Celebration cruise on the Odyssey in May. My thanks to them for sponsoring the all school dance on November 16th. I expect our students had a stompin' good ole time! I'm excited to announce that we now have direct payment ability from our PTO Website! We rely on all our families to support us with a one-time, one per family annual $25 fee. These funds help us support College Night, Directories, Staff Appreciation, the school nurse, and Staff Grants which benefit all our students. If you've already paid your dues, Thank You! If not, please go to the PTO website at www.bhspto.org and help us out, we need your support! I hope you'll take a moment to look at the plans our Academic Boosters Committee have been formulating with staff and students to create a great new space in our Commons area which will be available to and benefit all the students in our school. Please see more details in the newsletter about what we're hoping to accomplish and how you can help. The holidays are a wonderful time of year to celebrate with our talented Fine Arts students. Louise Fox, representing the Fine Arts Boosters on our PTO does a wonderful job keeping us informed of all that is happening. I hope you'll find the time to attend one of the many holiday performances that these talented artists put on for us in November and December. As we each count our blessings and reflect upon all that we are grateful for, I hope that you will take the opportunity to participate in the annual Barrington Giving Day. Please contact Patricia Karon at [email protected] for more information on this outstanding community-wide effort. All are welcome at our PTO meetings held at 9:15 am in room C-271 at the high school. We have coffee, treats, and a wealth of information. Mark your calendar and I hope to see you at our December 2nd and January 13th meetings! Here's wishing you and yours a very Happy Holiday Season and all the best in 2014! BHS PTO - HospitalityOn Wednesday, October 30th, the BHS PTO Hospitality Committee hosted the BHS Staff Appreciation Luncheon. It was a great success with lunch being served to approximately 350 staff members in the BHS Faculty Lounge. The luncheon was funded by the PTO. Buddy’s Special Events catered the luncheon providing salad, pasta, soup, chicken, Italian beef, hot dogs and chips. Desserts were donated by 20 parent volunteers who brought in all sorts of delicious baked goods. The room looked beautiful with black tablecloths, pretty center pieces and beautifully framed inspirational quotes for our staff. Lunch was served to the staff by the BHS Hospitality Committee, as well as by Bhama Winkler, Kim Kempinkski, Amy Stackhouse and Kim Burns. Thank you to all our volunteers! It was wonderful hearing so many staff members comment on how very much they appreciated the luncheon and the kind words. And of course, it was nice for us to be able to let the staff know how much we appreciate their dedication and everything they do for our children each day! BHS Hospitality Committee: Cecilia Rose, Therese Donoghue, Helen Cossio, Colleen Lipinski. Thanks,

Cecilia RoseHospitality

Academic Boosters is proud to share the blueprint to the right of what the new space will look like. Thank you to Ms. Karuna Parmar and her students: Thomas Seagrist and Nick Horvath for their time and efforts in designing the space. We are hopeful the architect is going to incorporate some of their design into the finished product.

On a fundraising note, for the month of November Marquardt of Barrington, is promoting Drive4$50. Marquardt will donate $50.00 every time someone comes in for a test drive and fills out a form designating the money to go to BHS Academic Boosters. This will take 5-10 minutes of your time AND they will wash your car while you are on the drive! Anyone 18 and older is eligible to participate. Also if you become their Facebook fan they will donate $5.00 more! They will donate up to $12,500 to Adademic Boosters!! Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Thanks,-Jeri Broderick, Karen Nejdawi & Cindy Collins Academic Boosters

Each December Barrington Giving Day invites families on the Free and Reduced lunch program residing in Barrington 220 School District to a Giving Day. Families receive food, warm coats, books, blankets, and gifts. Members of Barrington churches, schools, businesses and civic organizations have always been generous in their support of this day. Giving Day 2012 helped over 1,000 families, this included 3,000 children, and senior citizens. These families live in our school district. They are our friends and neighbors. Each year the need is greater.

Financial gifts are used to purchase food, and grocery food certificates, children’s coats, blankets, and essentials. Checks may be made payable to: Barrington Giving Day c/o John Paul Hills Barrington Bank & Trust 201 S. Hough St., Barrington, IL 60010

Your donation whatever the amount, is needed and greatly appreciated. Boxes for donations of new and gently used winter coats, books, and toys will be at various businesses, all schools and churches in Barrington on November 12 through December 11th.

Volunteers are needed for various tasks throughout December. If you or your organization would like to help in this worthy cause, please sign up through www.barringtongivingday.org. For additional information, please contact Patricia Karon or [email protected].

Thank you, -Jill Bauer Student Volunteer Program Coordinator
