Birding Colombia: Three Andean Mountain Ranges Tour 2019Trip Report
Colombia is considered a mega-diverse country in biodiversity, and has the highest rate of species by area unit worldwide and the highest rate of endemism. The variety of environmental conditions that the Andes Mountains (three ranges) create allow for this higher diversity of wildlife. On this tour, we explored a variety of different altitudes, different slopes and even different mountain ranges which gave us the chance to verify first-hand the bird diversity found here. In 12 days we visited several different environments including paramo, cloud forest, dry forest, moist forest and wetland – recording more than 480 species of birds, of which a little more than 20 were endemics. Some of the highlights include Buffy Helmetcrest, Turquoise Dacnis, Multicolored Tanager and White-mantled Barbet.

Birding Colombia 2019 - Trip Report
Local guide: Ferney Salgado
Highlights of the trip1. Getting a “group lifer” – the Colombian endemic Velvet-fronted Euphonia. Armero is the most
reliable place to find this euphoria. However, when we started birding here, things were so slow we almost gave up.
2. At least one endemic bird per day. With the exception of the first day, we saw one or more Colombian endemic bird every day of the tour.
3. The soaring moments: Raptors were undoubtedly one of the groups most appreciated by us, and several moments were particularly memorable: when a King Vulture pair flew over us in Victoria (Caldas), and when a White-rumped Hawk, a small Andean raptor, soared and called above the cloud forest at the Old Los Nevados Road.
4. Seeing six species and registering eleven of a rather elusive group, the antpittas, was surely a great experience for all of us. Among the birds in this group that stood out are Crescent-faced Antpitta, Undulated Antpitta and the Colombian endemic Brown-banded Antpitta.
5. After spending two hours searching for a target species at the highest point (4,120m/13,517f) of our tour in the Central Andes, we finally felt the oxygen levels return to normal as we began our descent. Most certainly, the Buffy Helmestcrest was one the most-wanted birds of the trip. The relief that we felt upon finding this bird was intensified by the extraordinary landscapes that we discovered at every curve on our way down.

Itinerary
Day 1: September 07 – Start of the Tour: Bogota to Cali
Early this morning we met all of the participants at the El Dorado Airport in Bogota to take our flight to Palmira (Cali). While we waited to board, we held a short orientation for the tour. Upon arriving in Palmira, we met our local guide, Ferney, and our driver, Mario. The excitement levels were so high that we decided to go straight to our first birding site – Río Bitaco Forest Reserve at Chicoral. By the time we arrived, it was a bit late in the morning for birding and, because the season had been quite dry, this cloud forest was almost unrecognizable. The start of our walk were very quiet. The first birds we found were Golden Tanager and Slate-throated Redstart. A few minutes later, we ran into a colorful mixed flock – Flame-faced, and Metallic-green tanagers, Red-headed Barbet, Uniform Antshrike, and Olive-backed Woodcreeper were just a few birds that stood out. Our walk ended at La Minga Ecolodge where we were able to appreciate the myriad of hummingbirds visiting the feeders – Booted Racket-tail, Long-tailed Sylph and Fawn-breasted Brilliant left us dumbstruck.
After a few hours and a delicious lunch, we traveled on to our lodge, making several stops along the way. These birding stops produced some great birds like Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Collared Trogon, Yellow-vented Woodpecker and Blue-naped Chlorophonia. Despite having started late, our day was very productive, with over 80 species seen.

Day 2: September 08 – El Descanso (Doña Dora) and Old Buenaventura Road
On the way to our first birding spot of the day, we made a quick stop in order to see our first endemic bird. We were treated to the sight of a group of Colombian Chachalacas foraging on the roadside. During this short stop, we also saw Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch and big flocks of Scaly-naped and Blue-headed parrots. Upon our arrival at El Descanso, Doña Dora greeted us with a delicious breakfast, which we ate while enjoying the views of Empress Brilliant, White-whiskered Hermit, Toucan Barbet, and Rufous-throated Tanager, to mention a few.
We then continued our journey down the western slope of the Western Andes, an area influenced by the Choco region. Among the characteristic birds of the Choco that we encountered, a few stood out: Spot-crowned Barbet, Choco Toucan, Pacific Antwren and Gray-and-gold Tanager. However, not only the birds with restricted distribution captivated on this day. The Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo (pale-legged subspecies of the Choco region of Colombia and Ecuador) put on a show for us when responding to playbacks. It perched at eye-level, showing its contrasting yellow eyebrows against its gray head. It was also quite exciting to hear an antpitta vocalizing. It was a familiar sound and Ferney identified it as Fulvous-vented Antpitta – formerly called Thicket Antpitta. On our way back, we stopped at El Descanso for a few minutes – enough time to add a new species to our list – Tricolored (Choco) Brushfinch.

Birding Colombia 2019 - Trip Report
We woke up very early this morning, and began the day with some birding around our lodge, Lomazul. We added a few new species to our list including White-naped Brushfinch, Golden-naped Tanager and the endemic subspecies of Acorn Woodpecker. After breakfast, we started our walk to Finca Alejandria – “the hummingbird paradise”. It was a very pleasant walk, and we were treated to a tremendous show of a group of Chestnut Wood-Quail, another Colombian endemic bird. “More chickens” was our first thought upon seeing movement on the ground, but then a group of wood-quails crossed the road. Then, a couple of them showed up at the roadside and they finished the show by crossing the road again behind us. The spectacle did not stop there. A Chestnut-breasted Wren started calling close to us. After searching briefly, we spotted the bird and could clearly see it singing. We saw many others birds during our walk such as Glossy-black Thrush, Rufous-naped Greenlet and Plain Antvireo.
At Finca Alejandria we were searching for the endemic Multicolored Tanager. Though this bird never did show up at the feeders, we caught a glimpse of it in the brush. While we waited, we also saw Black-billed Peppershrike, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Purple-throated Woodstar and Fawn-breasted Brilliant.
Our next destination was Sonso Lagoon in Buga. We made a few stops along the way in order to increase our bird list, which we did. We added Gray Seedeater and Blue-necked Tanager, to name a few. When we arrived to the wetland, we saw several aquatic birds: Snail Kite, Striated Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron and many more. Some dry forest and grassland species also showed up, including Dwarf Cuckoo, Little Cuckoo, Yellow Oriole, Red-breasted Meadowlark and an impressive number (five) of Common Potoo. We spent the entire evening here, almost until sunset. We were expecting to find the endemic flycatcher, but weren’t that lucky.
Day 4: September 10 – Sonso Lagoon and travel to Montezuma Lodge
Disappointed that we didn’t see our target bird at Sonso Lagoon, we hoped for a second chance today. The plan was to visit the lagoon again in the morning before leaving to Montezuma Lodge. Before breakfast, we did a little birding in the garden of the Guadalajara Hotel, making a couple more additions to our list: Buff-necked Ibis and Yellow-crowned Parrot. Then we visited the wetlands again, where Spectacled Parrotlet swarmed around looking for food among the bushes. We felt very lucky when one bird – the Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher, showed up this time around. We also got second looks at a few species such as Jet Antbird and Red-capped Cardinal, but there was still no sign of our target bird. It was almost nine o’clock, and was time to move on. We had already given up, when Ms. Elcira saw a bird perched above us. “I think it’s the Apical Flycatcher,” she said. She wasn’t mistaken. It was our target species. We left there very happy to know that we had fulfilled our goal.
We began our drive on a road that runs along the western side of the Cauca River. We observed several birds from our van, but when we passed by a wetland full of brown spots just before the Toro Toll Station, we had to stop the car. The site was overflowing with Fulvous Whistling-Duck, who were accompanied by Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Blue-winged Teal and American Coot. Some waders were also present, such as Least, Pectoral and Solitary sandpipers.
After a productive stop, we continued our trip to Pueblo Rico. Upon our arrival in the town square we were greeted with a commotion – a pair of Carib Grackle. Although this species is quickly expanding its territory, it was a surprise to see them there. Once in Montezuma, we were

welcomed by a number of hummingbirds, among which the Velvet-purple Coronet, Purple-bibbed Whitetip and Violet-tailed Sylph stood out. We did birding around the grounds of the lodge getting new birds such as Russet-backed Oropendola and Blackish Rail.
Day 5 - September 11 - Montezuma Road
We had an early start this morning. By five a.m. we were already piled into our Toyota, headed to the top of the Montezuma Mountain. After an hour along the bumpy road, we reached the peak just in time for sunrise. Our first target was observed almost immediately upon exiting the vehicle. What a surprise! The endemic Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer was at a feeder installed up there. We continued our journey down the hill, spotting a group of the near-endemic Beautiful Jay that were moving fast into the forest. We did not get a good view of the birds at this time, but later we had another encounter with great views. After a while, we stopped for breakfast and were delighted with the busy Tourmaline Sunangel, Green-crowned Brilliant and Rufous-gaped Hillstar, among other hummingbirds. We didn’t have to wait long for another endemic to make its presence known. The Munchique Wood-Wren sang along the roadside and then appeared several times for clear views. As we continued on our way, we saw several other specialties such as Black Solitaire, Club-winged Manakin, Brown Inca, Fulvous-dotted Treerunner and Purplish-mantled Tanager – all regional endemics of Colombia and Ecuador. Another Colombian endemic that should be mentioned is the Golden-ringed Tanager – La Bangsia del Tatama.
It took us all day to get down this road. At our last stop, our on-site guide, Michelle, started calling for the Olive Finch that sometimes come in for food. The birds showed up fleetingly, but didn’t eat.

We didn’t have much time to focus of them anyway, because Tony spotted one of our missing targets – the endemic Black-and-gold Tanager. We all ran to see it, when yet another endemic showed up in the understory, the Crested Ant-Tanager. What a great way to end our day!

Day 6: September 12 – Montezuma Lodge to Otum Quimbaya
This morning, we did some final birding around the lodge, adding a few more birds to our list: Masked Tityra, Slaty Spinetail, Crimson-backed Tanager and the endemic Parker's Antbird. As we were leaving the town of Pueblo Rico, we stopped at the sight of a soaring raptor. Upon closer inspection we saw there were two of them – a pair of White-tailed Hawk. We made another stop along the road, as we were getting close to Apia, to find a new target was waiting for us. We inspected a tree with many active birds, looking for a greenish-blue bird and there it was – the endemic Turquoise Dacnis. Another bird that has a distribution range throughout most of Colombia, but is more common than the dacnis, is the Bar-crested Antshrike. We were able to get great views of it wagging its tail and singing.
Before we arrived to Otun Quimbaya we stopped at a Raptor Rehab Center in Pereira. There we saw some special raptors that would be difficult to see in the wild, like the Black-and-chestnut Eagle. On the grounds of the rehab center we also get a few new species, such as Plain-breasted Ground Dove, White-winged Becard and Piratic Flycatcher. As we approached Otun Quimbaya, we searched the Otun River for the Torrent Duck, but it was a really hot day, and many people had decided to cool off in the river. The noise must have frightened the ducks. However, we

managed to get one of the specialties of Otun Quimbaya, the endemic Cauca Guan. When arriving at our lodge another specialty showed up – Red-ruffed Fruitcrow.
Day 7: September 13 – Full day in Rio Blanco Reserve
We left at dawn for our drive to Rio Blanco. This sacrifice was worth it, because only a few minutes after our arrival, we saw the Golden-headed Quetzal. Also, in the lodge’s gardens we had a visit from the Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager and Chestnut-capped Brushfinch, among other amazing species. Upon meeting our on-site guide, Daniel, we soon realized we had a busy schedule ahead of us. The antpittas are the specialties of this reserve, as they are attracted to the feeding stations set up for them. At 7:00 we visited the first feeding station. Right away, Daniel called for Bicolored Antpitta. It responded to the calls, but never came into view. Our next appointment was an hour later, so we explored the surrounding forests in the meantime. Here we found Blue-capped Tanager and Pale-edge Flycatcher, among others. At the second feeding station the first bird that showed up was Black-and-green Fruiteater, who also has learned it can find an easy meal here. The other bird that showed up right away was the endemic Brown-banded Antpitta. While we waited for other antpittas to show up, we were treated to a clear view of Streak-headed Antbird and Ash-colored Tapaculo. The show at this feeding station ended with the arrival of Chestnut-crowned Antpitta.
This time we had to wait two hours until our next commitment, enough time for a more in-depth exploration of the reserve. Among the birds that we saw, a few stand out such as White-capped Tanager, Capped Conebill, and Gray-hooded Bush Tanager. But it was almost at the appointed time and close to the third feeding station when we bumped into a mixed flock with some very

interesting birds like Grass-green Tanager, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Slaty Brushfinch and Golden-fronted Redstart. We were so captivated with the mixed flocks we almost missed our appointment with the Slate-crowned Antpitta.
We returned to the lodge to try the next antpitta on our list. At the station, while we were waiting, a Masked Trogon showed up along the trail. We all went to see it, while Daniel kept calling for the antpitta. It did not take long for the bird to appear, and we had to run. No one wanted to miss the Undulated Antpitta. In the afternoon, we drove out of the lodge to find Mountain Wren, Andean Motmot and the regional endemic subspecies, which is also considered a full species by different taxonomic authorities, the Black-collared (Quindio) Jay.
Day 8: September 14 – Hacienda El Bosque and Los Nevados (Paramo)
This was a very exciting day for me! I was going to see how birding and tourism had advanced since my first forays as an advisor years ago. Upon our arrival at Hacienda El Bosque, we noticed the excellent service and breakfast that awaited us. The antpittas are also specialties here. After breakfast, we visited the first antpitta feeding station. Nestor, the on-site guide, started calling Juli, Juli, Juli. A Gray-browed Brushfinch, dubbed Armando, showed up to steal Juli’s food. Nestor started arguing with Armando. However, Juli – a Rufous Antpitta – showed up later. While we waited, we enjoyed watching a male Purple-backed Thornbill and Red-crested Cotinga. At the second feeding station, Nestor started calling for Lunita (little moon). Instead, Little Quarter Moon the Crescent-faced Antpitta, appeared in the clearing – four, to be exact. At this station, we were also delighted by Sword-billed Hummingbird and Tyrian Metaltail which visited the hummingbird feeders; and the Barred Fruiteater which was foraging nearby. To finish our visit, we tried for Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, which had sang a couple of times and was seen by some of us. Then we continued to explore the road – Via Nevado del Ruiz. We stopped by the old San Carlos estate, where both sides of the road are covered with Paramo vegetation. In that vegetation we found Black Flowerpiercer, Andean-Tit Spinetail, Pale-naped Brushfinch and the gem Rainbow-bearded Thornbill. We continued along the road to Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon), where we found Andean Duck and Andean Teal. In the bushes, we observed Stout-billed Cinclodes, Andean Siskin and Plain-colored Seedeater, to named a few.
We then continued our journey along an old road that leads to Manizales (Old Los Nevados Road). We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the paramo along that road. We found several new species, such as Viridian Metaltail, Black-thighed Puffleg, Golden-breasted Puffleg – all regional endemics birds of Colombia and Ecuador. However, the jewel of the afternoon was the Paramo Tapaculo. After several attempts elsewhere, we were finally able to get a clear view of this very secretive bird.
Day 9: September 15 – Old Los Nevados Road, Nevado del Ruiz and the eastern slope
We wanted to enjoy this nice hotel (Estelar Recinto del Pensamiento) a little more so, we decided to stay after breakfast. Before the meal, we did a little birding on the grounds. Though it was a short birding excursion, it did give us two new species for the trip: Whiskered Wren and Yellow-backed Oriole. The plan for this day was to take a four-wheel vehicle down from Nevados del Ruiz to Murillo, on the eastern slope of the Central Andes. But even though we had great birding in Rio Blanco and Hacienda El Bosque, we decided to take the old road to Nevados del Ruiz to pick up

those birds that we were missing from our list. The birding on this road was phenomenal from the beginning. The three birds we hoped for showed up: Rufous-breasted Flycatcher, Black-billed Mountain-Toucanet and Crimson-mantled Woodpecker. Along the way many others birds delighted us, like a White-rumped Hawk soaring above us, and the mechanical sound made by the wings of the Dusky Piha in flight.
We arrived at the Paramo, to find another raptor that did not want to be left behind. This time a couple of Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles flew over and then perched on the rocky mountains. The paramo had more in store for us, however. At the same spot we heard the chatter of the endemic Rufous-fronted Parakeet that seemed to magically appear out of the bushes. We continued our way to Brisas (the entrance to the Los Nevados National Park) where we expected to find the very restricted Buffy Helmetcrest. Despite the instense cold, we sweated buckets trying to find the hummingbird. It took us over an hour and a half to see one.
On our way to Murillo, we stopped at El Sifon to try for other birds that we still hoped to see. We began our search with the Many-striped Canastero, which did not take long to appear. The same thing happened with the White-chinned Thistletail and the bonus of the day were two Tony Antpitta…. I mean Tawny Antpitta. We continued to bird until the end of the day, enjoying the beauty of a very starry night.
Day 10: September 16 – Murillo town, Camino La Tigrera (Libano) and Armero
This morning we visited the beautiful town of Murillo. Though the visit wasn’t very productive, it was the only place where we saw Streak-throated Bush-Tyrant. We then spent some time birding in a place between Murillo and Libano (Camino La Tigrera) where we observed our first endemic of the day, Yellow-headed Brushfinch. It was also a surprise to see a female Cerulean Warbler foraging. We heard White-crowned Tapaculo, and despite our best efforts to lure the bird into the open, like all the tapaculos, this one did not want to cooperate.
After lunch, we continued down to the Magdalena Medio region to the old town of Armero. Tragedy struck here 34 years ago when the second deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century occurred. Many streets and lots of tombstones serve as reminders of this sad event. Today, the entire area is covered with vegetation, which makes it an exceptional place to look for typical dry-forest birds. It was 3:00 in the afternoon when we started our excursion. We saw our first Southern Beardless-Tyrannulet after having heard it several time during the tour. Other birds that appeared soon after we began birding were Olivaceus Piculet and Orange-chinned Parakeet. There was still a long way to go to our lodge in Victoria, and Ferney suggested we get back on the road. However, the target species for this area had not yet appeared so we decided to stay a little bit longer. We only had to walk a few hundred meters for the bird activity to get better. One of the birds that announced its presence was the Straight-billed Woodcreeper. Then, in the distance we observed a small bird moving around in a tree. It was a grayish bird with a white cheek – a White-eared Conebill. This is a great bird with a small range from eastern Panama to Venezuela. At the same time a caracara-like bird was flying toward us. At first glance, I thought it was a Yellow-headed Caracara but Jeanette realized that it was a Laughing Falcon. Many others birds started to show up, including Groove-billed Ani, Ruddy-breasted Seedeater, Rufous-browed Peppershrike and Black Hawk-Eagle to name a few. Finally, we hit the jackpot for our perseverance when our target bird and a lifer for all of us, the endemic Velvet-fronted Euphonia appeared.

Day 11: September 17 – Victoria: Bellavista Reserve and Guarino Canyon
Since we overnighted at the reserve, we were ready to explore the area nice and early. With the help of Mr. Jeymar, the on-site guide, we took a trail that crossed through the forest. Right at the beginning a White-breasted Wood-Wren showed up. After walking only a few more meters Ferney tried calling for one of the targets of Bellavista. They must have been right there all along, because the single-specie flock immediately came in, moving from one place to the other. We all got great views of the endemic Sooty Ant-Tanager. Continuing along the the path, we found other interesting birds like Golden-headed Manakin, Rufous Motmot, and Black-bellied Wren. We made a loop and got back to our lodge for breakfast. At the lodge, we saw our first flock of Scarlet-fronted Parakeet. Little did we know we would see huge flocks of this parakeet later on. After breakfast we enjoyed another walk, with new birds for our list showing up, such as Black-faced (Yellow-tufted) Dacnis, and Ruddy Quail-Dove. But the one that stood out was the endemic White-mantled Barbet. We then left the reserve and headed toward Victoria town. We stopped in the middle of the road focused on a tall snag with a hole. The tenant of the hole did not take long to arrive, the Colombian endemic Beautiful Woodpecker. We also were thrilled when two soaring King Vulture flew over us.
In the afternoon, we traveled a road that leads from the Victoria town to Guarino River (Guarino Canyon). We did some easy birding and got better looks at some species such as Black-crowned Antshrike, White-bearded Manakin, Sooty-headed Wren and Fulvous-vented Euphonia, to name a few.
Day 12: September 18 – Guarinocito Lagoon and Jardin Encantado
So far through the tour, we had traveled through a number of different landscapes and ecosystems. We had experienced different temperatures, but until now, we hadn’t experienced a heavy downpour. We woke up to heavy rainfall on the last day of our tour. We left our hotel under those conditions and were worried we would reach Guarinocito Lagoon to find that the rain had not passed. When we arrived in Guarinocito, an hour from the Bellavista Reserve, we met our on-site guide, Cristian, who took us for breakfast. To our surprise, we had the option of trying rib broth or fish broth. Our waitress was more surprised, however, when we stuck with an order of arepas with egg. Luckily, while we were having breakfast, it stopped raining. We then traveled to the Guarinocito Lagoon. It was as if the birds were waiting for us to show up. Yellow-chinned Spinetail, White-headed Marsh-Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird were some of the new species for the trip. We took a short walk before taking a ride in a canoe, and spotted Black-capped Donacobius, Grayish Saltator, and Thick-billed Seed-Finch. As we continued exploring the lagoon, several water birds showed up such as American Pygmy Kingfisher and Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Our captain, Santos, told us about a different bird he had seen in a cove. He described it to us, but we had only seen Black-crowned Night-Heron. We were getting ready to head back, when I decided to give it another shot and try to see the bird our captain wanted to show us. We knew it couldn’t not be the night-heron, as we had already seen many of these in the lagoon. From his description, it sounded more like a Boat-billed Heron and indeed there it was among the branches at the edge of the lagoon. What a relief not to miss a new bird for our trip. Another bird that made our day was the Russet-throated Puffbird, incredibly the only species of puffbird observed during our tour. Our time in the lagoon was running out. This time we could not

extend our stay as we needed to make it to the airport on time. However, we continued a little more, in the hopes of seeing our main target for this area We stopped the boat in a place that Cristian and Santos knew well. As soon as our captain got off, he saw the bird. We all ran down to see it. At the top of a tree was a Northern Screamer. This was a great way to end our exploration of the lagoon.
From there, we crossed the Magdalena River and climbed towards the Eastern Andes. We arrived at Jardin Encantado (Enchanted Garden) where many very busy hummingbirds visited the feeders. We didn’t have to wait long for our target to show up – Violet-capped Hummingbird. Other hummingbirds also surprised us there, including Red-billed Emerald, Gorgeted Woodstar and to end the tour, a beautiful male Ruby-topaz Hummingbird.
Thanks!
This tour would not have been possible without our participants. Thank you very much for trusting and traveling with us! We also thank all the great on-site guides: Michell Tabasco (Montezuma Lodge), Jhonatan Bedoya (Reserva Natural Laguna de Sonso), Daniel Muñoz (Reserva Ecologica de Rio Blanco), Mr. Jeymar (Bellavista Reserve) and Cristian (Guarinocito Lagoon).
