MISSION STATEMENT: Blessed Trinity Catholic Church Stewardship Community recognizes Jesus is Lord. We believe that

our Time, Talent and Treasure are gifts from God to be used for the spiritual, educational and social needs of

our community, the Diocese and the world at large, especially the poor.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

All that we have and all that we are comes from the Lord. “We are truly his handiwork,”

says St. Paul in the second reading, “created in Christ Jesus to lead a life of good deeds

which God prepared for us in advance.”

WORD OF LIFE

“When I voiced my objections to do

abortion-related services, I was

terminated. It’s against my conscience. I

became a nurse to protect lives, not to

take lives.” – Sandra Mendoza, L.P.N.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” Do we really need a more powerful reminder of the importance of Lent and Easter than that?

That verse (from John 3:16) has become very popular in modern culture, to the point that we see it often at athletic events. When the University of Florida played for the national college football championship in 2009, quarterback Tim Tebow did not wear the regular eye black under his eyes. Under his right eye it said “John” and under his left eye it said “3:16.” God sends us messages all the time, if we listen and are attentive.

Tebow did not have a remarkable professional career, but he was the quarterback of the Denver Broncos against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 playoffs. The Broncos won, and in that game Tebow passed for 316 yards; his completed passes averaged 31.6 yards; perhaps the key play in the game came on third down and 16; the TV ratings for the game were 31.6%.

That is not the important aspect, however. What is important is that the truth of that statement is so simple; nevertheless, it is difficult for us to completely grasp its significance. The truth is that God loves us, no matter what we are or what our attitude toward God is. The world that God gave His Son to save is our world. We are the children of God. OUR CATHOLIC APPEAL PRAYER

O Lord, we praise You for the many gifts You

give us each day; from the moment we were

a presence in our mother’s womb to the grace-filled

rise of the sun, to the blessing of Sacrament,

to the night which ushers us rest.

Help us to grow in our living faith.

Guide us to serve as leaders to bring about holiness.

Bring us to share ourselves selflessly in all things in a

spirit of love of You. In the Eucharistic banquet,

You give Yourself completely and entirely to us.

We give You our return, O Lord, with gratitude

knowing there is no measure to the gift of the Cross

which brings us resurrection.

Featured Adult Book of the week: Glory Happening finding divine in everyday places: “When you have an experience and tell the story of that experience to someone, something sacred happens inside of you. That experience doesn’t have to be an extravagant moment, but it can be beautiful, nonetheless. And as you store up all those stories and share them, you grow your world’s boundaries. You build community and remind yourself that every moment of your life counts for something holy, good, and glorious. The search for glory will bring freedom and a fresh perspective to whatever season you happen to find yourself in. Glory Happening is a book of stories and prayers that remind you to take a closer look at your everyday circumstances, to find the magical beauty in everyday experiences. It is an invitation to live deeply into every moment with the expectation that something good will find you at the end of the day. And once you experience glory, you have words to speak, a prayer to pray, and a story to tell. And so glory grows from person to person, and community is created around the reality that God is truly in our midst.”

I will be here asking for financial assistance this weekend so that I may continue to help and show all of the people love at our sister parish in Uganda. Thank you in advance and God Bless.

PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE There’s still time to do something different for Lent this year.

Give up store bought coffee, tea, cocoa, & olive oil and

instead drink Fair Trade coffee, tea, cocoa, & olive oil. We

sell these products here at Blessed Trinity, the 2nd weekend

every month, after Mass. You’ll be helping small family

farmers in Asia, Latin America, Africa, & Palestine make a

fair wage and provide a decent living. Through Fair Trade,

farmers support their families and their employees, stay on the

land, and care for the environment by growing their crops

organically. Do you own a single cup Keurig? We now sell Fair Trade

single pod coffee cups. We’ll be selling all these products

this weekend after Mass.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS This week, our second collection will be for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in over 25 countries still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection help support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. For more information, please visit www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your generosity. This week, we are taking up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to respond to Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

LENT

SOUP & BREAD DINNER Brother’s Keeper Soup Kitchen will be serving its fabulous Soup & Bread dinner every Wednesday during Lent. Join us in the Parish Hall from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Use this meal as a Lenten fast - the

food is good for the body and the fast is good for the soul.

LONG SLEEVE RELIEF DRIVE ENDS MARCH 17-18 Next weekend ends the collecting of shirts for Migrants who help bring food to our tables. And the crowds asked Him, "What then shall we do?" He answered them, "Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none and whoever has food is to do likewise.” Luke 3:10-11 Many thanks for your participation.

CANDY FOR EASTER EGG HUNT Please donate individually wrapped candy (in its original wrapper) that can fit in a plastic Easter egg BEFORE Palm Sunday. We fill about 2000 eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt. We also like to give out candy to those who return the plastic eggs after the event and last year we were very short on candy. There will be a box to collect the Easter Candy in the Stewardship room. Contact Jane Hoesterey if any questions.

RCIA News During the 8:45 Mass TODAY, and March 18th our RCIA Catechumens and Candidates will be participating in The Scrutinies. The Scrutinies are rites of conversion and repentance. They include prayers of intercession and exorcism and are intended to deliver the elect from sin, protect them from temptation and invite them to be-come closer to Christ, who is the living water, the light of the world and the Resurrection and the Life. The three Scrutinies are celebrated on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent.

EASTER DECORATIONS

Easter is truly a beautiful season in our Christian faith. It is

the defining moment for Christianity as a whole. It is our

mission to bring the beauty of scripture alive in the

environment of Blessed Trinity. There is a decorated box

in the vestibule for you to prayerfully consider donating

funds for Easter flowers and decorations.

Lent – a 40 Day Journey We are encouraged not to respond to unsigned letters – but…just in case you (unsigned parishioner) are not the only one out there who thinks “lent” is not being dealt with adequately by us priests, then here are a few facts to meditate on. 1. On February 11th you heard a homily at all Masses on our responsibility to

recognize, reach out to and welcome the stranger. You said on February 11th we heard about “Catholic Schools.” That was an announcement, not the homily. Lent is a time to help you recognize the stranger.

2. You said, so far “You have yet to hear a homily on Lent.” Where were you on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent when thousands of your fellow parishioners were at Mass and formally began their 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving – inspired by the scripture, the homily and the prayers of the congregation? You see “Lent” is not so much about homilies – it is about a 40 day journey of action – prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The homilies are about the scripture of that weekend, taking some practical application for our daily spiritual life.

3. You said on February 18th “we had the Bishop’s Appeal Video – but did you not hear the Bishop’s homily? He talked about the scripture for the day and how we are called to “Conversion of heart” which is the main purpose of Lent.

4. You are right in stating that Lent is a major part of the liturgical year when “we recall the core beliefs of our faith.” Well - guess what – conversion of heart is a real core belief of our faith; “recognizing – welcoming the stranger” is a core belief of our faith; living by God’s Law preparing for and “living out our marriage” is a core belief of our faith; and “Trusting God” is another core belief of our faith. (Deacon Steve’s homily February 24/25)

5. The unsigned letter said very little is said about Lent/either before or during Lent (so far) except for “to note the times of the various Lenten observances.” The bulletin also had two different Prayers for Lent and the “Regulations for Lent” several times. Again, Lent is a journey about prayer, fasting and almsgiving for 40 days. It is not primarily about the homily. The purpose of the homily is to apply God’s word assigned to the Mass each weekend – for the entire year.

So – the homilies will not be specifically about Lent but about the scriptures (God’s Word) for the weekend. And that in itself should help you live the Lenten journey more fully.

BIBLE STUDY - ORIGIN of the BIBLE Dr. Brant Pitre

Fellow parishioners. Here’s a Bible study for men and women that you may be interested in attending. The group meets on Wednesdays in the Christopher Hall (KofC) at 3:15pm and finishes about 5:00pm in time for daily Mass at 5:30pm. Dr. Pitre is a very knowledgeable and dynamic Catholic teacher. No books to buy. You can download and print an outline of the course at brantpitre.com. Here’s a short summary of the course outline:

Have you ever wondered: How did we get the Bible? Where does the Bible come from? And why are there different Bibles? In this primer for anyone interested in Bible study, Dr. Pitre takes you through a three-part study of the origins of the Old and New Testaments. Particular focus is given to the history of how the canon, the official list of books in the Bible, came to be, and the central role the Catholic Church played in the formation of the canon. Dr. Pitre also explores the reliability and authorship of the Gospels, and whether or not we can have confidence that the canon of Scripture is reliable. This fascinating series will answer questions such as:

• Where did the Bible come from?

• Why are there so many different versions of the Bible?

• Why are those books in the Bible?

• What was the Jewish Bible like at the time of Jesus?

• Why are there seven less books in Protestant Bibles than in Catholic Bibles?

• How do we know that the Gospels are reliable?

• What are the Dead Sea Scrolls and the “Lost Gospels”?

• How did Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformers change the Bible?

• What about “Sola Scriptura” and belief in the “Bible Alone”?

Whether you’re a beginner or a lifelong student of the Bible, you’re sure to gain new and exciting insights from this informative series. So, if you’re interested in learning about the hottest selling book in the history of mankind, then this Bible study on the Bible is for you!

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY - JESUS and the END TIMES DR. BRANT PITRE

Have you ever wondered what the Bible teaches about what will happen at the End of Time? Many Catholics have heard about “the Rapture,” the coming of the “Anti-christ,” and the Second Coming, but are unsure exactly what to believe about these topics. In this detailed Bible study on the end times, Dr. Pitre brings clarity and precision to the confusion that frequently surrounds the doctrine of the end times, by answering crucial questions such as:

• What is the meaning of Jesus’ prophecies of tribulation and the coming of the Son of Man? Are we in the “end times” now?

• Why did Jesus prophesy the destruction of the Temple, and how does it relate to the End of the World?

• What will the Final Judgment be like, and how will we be judged?

No books to buy. You can print a free outline by going to brantpitre.com and look for excerpts and outlines for the course.

The study will start March 12th and every Monday after at 6:30pm in Christopher Hall (K of C). Our sessions are usually over at 8:00pm. Hope to see more of you guys there. Maybe make it a Lenten resolution - more Bible study. God bless.

“RED/WHITE” APPRECIATION

March 3rd at the Hilton the 26th Annual Red/White dinner auction was held to a sell out crowd. The planning and work put

into this event was just inspiring. It is a good example of all the various groups and ministries in the parish who commit to a

worthy cause and follow through. It is true Stewardship in action. So many put their talents and time to work regardless of

recognition or not.

This 26th Annual Red/White was extremely successful—in terms of money maybe the best ever, but even more so in terms of

good will, community spirit created for our Catholic grade school. You will get the details from the committee. The number of

industrious volunteers are just far too many for me to name. I enjoyed the whole event after a long busy Saturday with

weddings, etc. I even threw in a few nuisance bids and, thank God, I did not come out a winner in any of them.

The money coming from this Red/White dinner auction will go toward expanding school security.

We thank our committee members: Kristy Zielinski, Carol Toone, Beth Eiland, Alicia O’Farrell, Kelly Varney, Kelianne Johnson,

Tony D’Ambrosio, Liza D’Ambrosio, Ale Cretul, Kerry Turner, Jill Schuck, Shana Stevens and Liz MacMillan. Also thank you to

the following people who helped set up on Friday and also helped the night of the event: Sandy Poucher, Julie Quaid, Tonya

Vorisek, Yessenia Murillo, Karen DePasquale, Rosemary Lorenzo, Bernadette Knight, Kris Nixon, Nancy Pasteur, Colleen

Halstead and Gwen Pasteur.

We thank all our sponsors—see insert. We thank all our dinner guests. We thank all our “winners” in the silent

auction and live auction and we thank God for sending us so many gifted supporters and workers.

Oh Cross of Christ

Oh Tree of Life, from Seedling to Throne, to Feel what you Felt, to Know, what you have Known! You Held him in your Arms, to the Envy of his Mother, as there he Hung, Alone to Suffer. He was Crushed for us, made to Drink the Cup, his Dignity Taken, you bore him up. Despised, Forgotten, Forsaken was he, you Raised him High, for all Time to see. What Purpose, what Destiny, to Be that Altar Wood, to have Offered the Sacrificial Lamb, on that Hill where you Stood. What was it like, his Wounds pressed upon your grain, to be Soaked in his Saving Blood, to Share his Salvific Pain? As you carried his Body, so Heavy with Sin, did you feel the Burden, of my Guilt within? Oh Cross of Christ, friend to Sorrow, familiar with Strife, his Companion into Death, Companion me now, into Life. Composed by a parishioner

All our P7 graduating students at Blessed Trinity Grade School, Nalweyo wrote “Thank you” letters. Here is a sample.

OFFERTORY GIFTS

The ushers take up the collection each week

from the pews. Then the offerings collected

from the community, plus the bread and wine

used for the consecration, are brought to the

altar, each and every Mass by a family or

single people who represent the whole

community. It is a privilege to be that family

or people. Only as a last resort, if they cannot

find someone to avail of this privilege, should

the ushers bring up the gifts.
