Shepherds and sheep were so much a part of life for Jesus and those from Galilee. Galilee was, after all, largely a rural area and raising sheep and sheepherding was an intricate part of their lives. That is why the image of a shepherd with his sheep was so often used during biblical times. It was a connection with which people could identify.

It is equally important for us today to understand this important cultural connection for them. Shepherding was all about feeding the lambs and the sheep (recall that Jesus tells Peter “Feed my sheep.”), bringing them to good pasture lands and water (“The Lord is my shepherd…He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters; he restores my soul.”); going after lost lambs (“Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?”); and protects the sheep in the field and the fold (“The watchman opens the gate, and the sheep listen to his voice.”).

Our Gospel reading today comes from St. John 10: 1-10. In St. John 10: 11, the next verse, Christ declares “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.” As Catholics and Christians, we, too, are called to be Good Shepherds to all those with whom we come in contact. It may be from another culture than ours, but we should understand full well the implications of that.

MEDUGORJE ROSARIES Once again we have rosaries made in Medugorje by Mr. Dragan Skoko and his children from local crushed rock, etc. Each time we go the Skoko’s have another 170 rosaries ready for us to put in our store. The rosaries sell for $10.00. The money is used to send the Skoko children to college. Fifty of the rosaries are already sold. Stop by our religious gift store if you want to pick up one for yourself or a friend.

THE PARISH HAS GOT TALENT

We are grateful for the 14 different talented acts

performed on stage last Sunday in our Parish

Hall. Our talents, whatever they are, need to be

recognized, cultivated and used for others.

That’s just what all our performers did. It was a

delightful hour. We especially thank Liz Cook

for pulling it all together, of course with the help

of several others.

CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN Today, we are taking up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Your support helps the CCC connect people to Christ, here and around the world, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. Half of the funds we collect remains in our diocese to support local efforts. Be a part of this campaign to spread the gospel message and support the collection today! PEACE & SOCIAL JUSTICE Next weekend we will be selling FAIR TRADE coffee, tea, cocoa, and olive oil from Latin America, Asia, Africa, India & Palestine, after all Masses. We also have single serve coffee. According to the United Nations 2.5 billion people in the global South still live on less than $2 per day—that’s poverty that makes living with dignity awfully difficult. We buy our FAIR TRADE items from EQUAL EXCHANGE, a member of the CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES FAIR TRADE PROGRAM. By purchasing these products, you are putting the values of Catholic Social teaching into action, and working to realize the vision of economic justice.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP TRAINING Attention all Ministry Heads and those that maintain a Leadership Positon at the Parish, Servant Leader-ship Training will be held on May 17th @ 6:00 pm in the Teacher’s Lounge and on September 20th @ 6:00 pm in the Teacher’s Lounge. This training will outline the role and responsibilities of Parish Leaders/Ministry Heads as well as discuss leadership qualities and the basics of holding effective and productive meetings.

THANK YOU I am sorry this is getting out so late, but I wanted to send a special “thank you” out for all of your help and involvement during Easter and Holy Week! It was a very special week and I have received much feedback about its success. Thank you for all of your efforts and time that you are devoting to your ministries! Happy Easter, Alleluia! Liz Cook
