Well, what a meeting it was last month!! I think a record attendance for BQ for a non-shared-lunch meeting!! Well done, all of you. It was lots of fun, lots of buzz going on!! What can I say about the amazing job you all did on the ABC blocks and the Raffle Blocks! Apart from a massive thank-you for getting behind the Committee and supporting their efforts at keeping you all entertained!! It was fantastic to see what you all came up with for your given Letter – not a single ‘A for Apple’ to be seen!!! We all wait with baited breath to see what the quilts look like – no pressure, girls!!!! And as for the Raffle Blocks, well, you excelled yourselves. Actually, no, I won’t say that in case you give up trying – nah, could do better!!!! What a massive effort and how good did they look???? Let’s keep the momentum going – red and grey, should look amazing. You will all have to take lots of photos, as I wont be there at the March meeting to see them. After Rachel’s talk at our meeting, Anne, Glenys, myself and Glenys’s grand-daughter handed out your beautiful quilts to the Very Special Kids Camp at Lord Somers on the Sunday. We gave 21 families a quilt to take home. It is a very humbling and emotional experience to be part of such a special day, and to see the pleasure on the faces of the children and their families when they choose their quilt. Well done ladies, and a big pat on the back from all of us for making and donating the quilts. Finally, I know you are all going to love Irene Blanck who is our wonderful Guest Speaker this month. Irene’s quilts are absolutely gorgeous, and for those of you taking part in Irene’s workshop on Sunday, you are in for a treat. You will never be nervous about needleturn applique again!! Free  Mo,on  Quil,ng  with  Lee  VauseWe are pleased to offer our members an opportunity to spend a day with prize winning quilter Lee Vause who is coming to help us improve our free motion quilting. This will be on Sunday 10 July. You can indicate your interest for this workshop on the website.Lee is offering to anyone interested in attending that if they wish to do so, they can also spend the afternoon learning how to use the Westalee rulers and templates. However, if you wish to do so (it is purely an option), there is the added cost of the appropriate foot for your machine, plus the rulers and templates. If you wish to spend the afternoon with more free motion practice, that is fine also.

2016 Bay Quilters Quilt Show

Slow Stitching MovementAdult colouring-in books are all the rage at the moment.  They are beneficial because they give you a simple creative task to focus on, which allows you to quieten your mind – in other words they are a form of meditation.Anyone who hand quilts will be rolling their eyes. You’ve know for ages that sitting quietly and stitching calms you down, and puts the days problems in perspective.  This is something that we machine quilters don’t necessarily experience.Which is why I was very pleased to hear about the “Slow Stitching Movement”. Initially when I saw the article I thought, “Sigh – more hand quilting propaganda”… but it’s not.  The idea is just that whatever form of quilting you’re doing, focus on it, and only it. Spend 20 minutes just thinking about your current task. Don’t think about what you’re going to cook for dinner, the kid’s latest demands or that long list of chores.  Just focus on your quilting.  Focus on doing this particular piece as well as you possibly can.The benefits are numerous: by quietening your mind, you’re able to put your day in perspective, and you recharge your batteries.  But then there is also the truth that in order to master a new technique, you need to focus on it.  Experimenting with a new technique for a few minutes each day – while only focussing on the sewing – makes it much more likely that you will master it.Details on the Slow Stitching Movement which was started by Mark Lipinski can be found on facebook, or at Slow Down with The Slow Stitching Movement | Quilty Pleasures Blog

One of the charities that Bay Quilters donates quilts to is Very Special Kids. We were fortunate to have a visit from Rachel Ficinus, their Family Support Team Manager, at our February meeting.VSK is a children’s charity that helps more than 900 families across Victoria who have a child with a life-threatening condition with ongoing support from diagnosis all the way through to recovery or bereavement. Sadly, many of the children they care for will not reach adulthood.

Family support services include counselling, advocacy, sibling support, bereavement support, networking and peer activities, trained family volunteers and specialist care at Very Special Kids Hospice. Each family is supported in unique and varying ways according to their personal needs. The VSK Hospice is the only children’s hospice in Victoria and they offer families access to planned and emergency respite, as well as end-of-life care. VSK supports families after the death of a child and there is no limit to the amount of bereavement support. There is no charge for any of their services. It costs $7 million per year to operate and only 60-65% is funded by government. They rely heavily on volunteers and donations. Rachel thanked Bay Quilters for its support and said that the quilts provided by Bay Quilters are much valued. They are something for participants to take home from their special weekend at Lord Somers camp weekend and serve as a reminder of a special time for families.

A Quilter Is:- Someone who assiduously hunts for bargains at the supermarket, but buys untold metres of fabric, regardless of price.- Someone who pays to have her ironing done, but thinks nothing of standing for hours pressing twenty metres of fabric for a quilt.- Someone who is bored silly hearing about other people’s hobbies, such as sky diving, motorcycling or stamp collecting, but constantly fascinates everyone she comes in contact with by sharing her quilts and quilting experience.- Someone who is not able to balance a cheque book, but can figure out the yardage requirements for a log cabin quilt and have just enough left over to make a pin cushion.- Someone who enjoys sewing a quilt, but hides mending until the garments are either outgrown or out of style.- Someone who cannot see cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, dustballs under the bed, or a sinkfull of dirty dishes, but can thread a size 10 quilting needle in the dark.

Quilts from the HeartWe had a special request via Ellen Mason for baby quilts for donation to the Mercy Hospital Neo-Natal Ward. They should be 30” square and preferably in baby fabrics or pastels. Quilting can be arranged. As we are now contributing quilts to SECASA, VSK, Quilts of Valour and the Mercy Hospital, members are asked to indicate on the Show and Tell form where they would like their quilt to go, if they have a particular preference. We always have some batting at the meetings. For anything specific, please let me know your requirement before the meeting and I will be happy to provide it. Gail - Phone: 9584 6418 or [email protected]
