Stisted Motocross

Cressing’s Jason Morland took two out of three race wins at Sunday’s annual Stisted motocross to turn the tables on last year’s winner Ben Talbott and claim back the Jack Hubbard Trophy - his third time in seven years. Braintree & District Motor Cycle Club promoted the event in this their 61st year of scrambling at the Hatches Farm venue, where updates to the track layout, surface and start system produced an excellent day’s racing. It looked, from the first combined MX1/MX2 group leg, that Bury St. Edmunds’ Talbott would once again deny local man Morland the Trophy. Morland headed the pack for the first 4 of the 10 laps with Talbott

snapping at his heels, only to have his rival get by him and hold the lead – but only for two further rounds until slipping off and letting Morland through to take the finish flag first. Talbott’s chain broke in the second leg, earning him no points and Ipswich rider Brendon Meyers became Morland’s main threat from then on, with a leg win apiece, but by this time Morland had done enough to secure his name on the Trophy. At times over-cooking things in customary style, Stisted Enduro expert Will Hughes - riding the smaller MX2 KTM EXC against the MX1 machines – found his consistent placing over the three legs paid dividends to give him an excellent third place overall ahead of the unlucky Ben Talbott. Fellow Braintree Enduro man James Yearley, riding a Courtney Lang sponsored KTM, was using the event primarily for training but still managed to pick up points from his first 15 placings. Rayne’s Aaron Smith was set to consolidate his current 2nd in the NGR Over 30s Championship standings but had clutch problems with his new KTM after being with the leaders for the first half of leg 1. Friend Jason Morland lent him his spare machine to record 5th in his last ride. The NGR class was dominated by Timothy Clark, last year’s Stisted winner, who, but for following eventual runner-up Aaron Hopkins for most of the first leg, led every other leg from start to finish. The tightly fought EVO group saw Robert Mead emerge as overall winner, but the honours were spread with Jason Morettes and Jordan Pasquali each scoring leg wins. Mrs Cecily Hubbard and family presented the Jack Hubbard Trophy and other prizes. RESULTS MX1/MX2 1. Jason Morland 57 2. Brendon Mayers 50 3. William Hughes 35 4. Ben Talbott 32 5. LDT

On Sunday 17th April we successfully run the now annual Long Distance Trial. Sorry for the lack of a report but I could only briefly attend and no one has been able to put pen to paper. From what I witnessed at Beazley End the 40+ riders were having a real fun day out. Expert trials rider Chris Koch made the journey down worthwhile by taking the overall win but our very own chairman Steve was 2nd overall and the real winner riding his full blown Honda Enduro bike round the sections for a superb score of 12 marks. Below photo shows Paul Bolton and friends enjoying a cracking day’s trailing round the Essex countryside with a few sections thrown in for good measure! If you haven’t rode it before you should certainly make an effort to next year as it continues to get great reviews. Thanks to Cliff and the TRF club for running the event with us.

COMPETITION

Well I didn’t get one answer to last editions competition which asked – who is this hard working chap @ 7am helping clear sections? Is it Billy Ballast is it Bat?? It was of course Squeak Graham Palmer giving a helping hand as usual clearing some sections at Spansey Wood. The club relies on folk’s such as Graham to lend a hand and we would welcome anyone who can help – please get in touch with a committee member. In the absence of any entries I’ve awarded myself the prize – A Brand new Respsol Honda (thanks everyone). Ed

CLUB TRIALS CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 Two more events have passed since the last newsletter. In April we had the Castle run trial at Thorrington. It’s always a good ride round this venue. The ditches were pretty high with water and several sections got very snotty. Chairman had a big crash in one section featuring a large log and was found in the back of the van with blood pouring from his nose. That was the end of his trial! Cookie had a good ride to finish 3rd in the Inter B’s and the Palmer brothers were out in force and battling all day on their old bikes. Roy took a great win in the pre-70’s and Squeak came home 5th in the twinshocks. Allen was the real star coming home in 3rd in a rare outing for him. The next round was at Beazley End with Chelmsford Club running their summer series trial. It’s such a shame they lost Broomfield as the Saturday evening trials over there were always good fun. Anyhow despite it being a local event and round 4 of the clubs championship (we purposefully don’t just pick our own events to try and encourage riders to support the other local clubs) only 4 club riders rode. Good to see James out on a trials bike. Paul and Nathan also had good rides in the novice class and picked up a load of championship points. So we are halfway through the calendar and there are still lots of points up for grabs. Remember we drop the worst 3 scores so even if you haven’t rode any of the events yet you could still claim a little place in club history and take home a bit of plastic for the mantel piece if you ride the next few events.
