The times, they are a changin’... it’s true. I’ve been around this club long enough to see some major changes, especially in communication and technology. And with our membership having an older demographic, it was bound to take awhile (and there are some who are not happy about it still). But all things change; traditions and conventions have to adapt to the changing landscape or disappear. I was shocked this year when it was suggested that I remove Davenport from the schedule because it was not confirmed; I mean, Davenport always happens, right? When I heard that Tom Jones wasn’t going I had to sit down for a minute. But this former staple and even the veritable Sturgis ride have taken a hit from changes beyond our control. Davenport’s split from the national AMCA and Jerry’s passing, amongst other things, have contributed. We want things to stay the same, but they won’t, and there’s no going back.

Sometimes it takes a good deal of effort to keep the ball rolling. Case in point: the Money Creek ride, dead in the water last year, made a comeback through the efforts of members that cared. And I’ll admit, it had a really dif-ferent feel to it, in that it felt like something new - not a re-hashed version of what it was. And often that is the key.

I don’t accept the idea that young people are not interested in old motorcycles, there will always be a crowd for that. When it comes down to the long-term survival of our club, our ability to change and adapt will make the dif-ference - we must accept the idea that in time this club may be very different than the club we have now. We must be open to letting it become something new.

PS. - This is the October issue. Why? Because I didn’t get it done in September. I felt bad about that until I re-alized I could just call it the October issue and it would be right on time. Bam! (Probably the only October issue that we’ll ever have… collector edition?). See you in December… hopefully on time! -Ed

Fall is officially here and it’s time to start moving things around in my garage to make room for storing motorcycles for the winter. Summer riding is only one aspect of enjoying old motorcycles. Winter brings time to work on motorcycles projects, driving to Diamonds Coffee Shop on Saturday morning in a snow storm just to see who else shows up! We also participate in the IMS and the Donnie Smith motorcycle shows with our fellow members and share our enthusiasm for old motor-cycles. The annual Holiday Party in January brings us together with Chapter members we may not have seen for a while. OK, I will stop this talk of winter fun and review a few things from our summer season.

The National Meet at the MN State Fairgrounds was a success do to Viking Chapter and the newly renamed AJMC members for helping out in a big way. We are already beginning to plan for next year! We will be honoring the Harley-Davidson Shovelheads of 1966 to 1984”. Make sure to mark June 12 & 13th on your calendar for 2020.

The Presidents Ride to Money Creek in South East Minnesota in July was a lot of fun and we also detoured over to the Drift less area of Wisconsin before returning to grill our Saturday dinner at camp and enjoy some music around the campfire provided by our newsletter editor Cal Spooner. We plan on doing it again next July and I hope more of you can join us.

Doug Nelson worked his barbeque magic again at our Annual Chicken Barbeque August 18th at Veterans Park in Richfield, this was his 5th year of showing up early to get the grill going. Also thanks to Bob Hopf and Roger Rimnac for transporting the huge pull-behind grill that was on loan from Paul Joswick’s Hollywood Roadhouse and to Ivar Natins for reserving our location.

Another highlight for me was our participation in the Motosota “Goodbye to Summer Event” Sept 7th at Bau-haus Brewery. We talked to a lot of younger motorcycle enthusiasts about preserving and restoring old motorcycles. Rick Wyatt brought his recent craigslist find, a 1960 BSA that needs lots of TLC. This bike attracted curious people and allowed us to do some talking about acquiring and starting a restoration project, Of course we had several of our members restored motorcycles on hand to show them what can be accomplished.

Of course the Fall Swap meet is always fun. What’s not fun about getting up at 4am to meet the crew at Perkins at 5am for breakfast and much needed coffee. This year it was September 15th. As always the vendors and shoppers showed up early for the best deals. Gates opened at 6am! Thanks to all who helped and participated. Especially Tom Whittles for handling the details with the fairground folks and lugging over his extra large canopy. Did I men-tion he always has the coffee brewing by the gallon!

This is just a few of the events that our club had available for Members to enjoy. I don’t have enough room to talk about everything we had going on this summer but I have been talking to as many members as I can about what gets their motor running. They have shared many good new ideas that we can utilize to give our members even more motorcycle related events to enjoy in the future.

Now it’s back to my garage reorganization project!

Blind Lizard Rally

Events

If you went to Blind Lizard Rally this year you heard the rumors - that this would be the last one. Of course, most of us know that the “last one” happened many years ago, but the next year, people showed up anyway. And so it has been all these years since. All we need is a meeting place, a date and a time; we have that, and if there is no chili when we get there, it won’t make much difference. May I sug-gest that next year on Fathers day every-one brings two cans of any kind of chili, and a six-pack of name-your-poison and we all slither on down to Nicollet Island for the next Liz rally. I’ll bring the pot (the cooking pot, that is…) -Ed.

President’s Ride - Money Creek

Events

Good turnout with good weather! Some members rode down on Friday for the day. Saturday saw people arrive for the ride thru the SW corner of Wisconsin, about a 100 mile loop.

Events

A few campers and a few tents with a grilled dinner and bonfire were enjoyed by all who stayed overnight.

Roughing it…!

Oh, yeah…..

Bring Out Yer Dead

Events

Although the turnout was small it was a great ride up to Duluth with a club member meeting them half way. Riders arrived at Sir Benedicts, ate and then headed to Ivar’s cabin for a swim and overnight stay, then rode straight back on Sunday. Alt-hough no one made 500 miles, the total mileage for the two day trip was 480 making this a very doable “Century Ride” possibility for next year.

AMCA BBQ & General Meeting

Events

Picnic was held at Veteran’s Park in Richfield, MN. Doug Nelson did the grilling this year. He cooked salmon, chick-en, brats and corn. Open board positions were announced. About 45 people showed up.

10,000 Lakes Concours d’Excellence

Events

Held in Hopkins, the Concours d’Elegance judges vehicles by French rules; in other words, by style alone. 8 members of the Viking Chapter and An-tique Japanese Motorcycle Club had bikes on display. 3 members won awards: Caleb Spooner - Other/1965 Ducati Brio; Ron Spargo - Best Vin-tage European/1950 BSA; Roy Williams - Best Classic Japanese/Honda CB160.

(Rescheduled) Ride to Vet’s Home - Ice Cream Social

Events

Good weather, good turnout of motorcycles. The VA was glad to greet us and many resi-dents were brought outside to enjoy ice cream with Viking members. Ice cream was procured by Viking members Kathi Rimnac & Gloria Peters.

Fall Swap Meet - Tom Whittles

Events

Last years Fall Swap Meet was a source of frustration - the State Fairgrounds staff didn’t do us any favors. For 2019 we were ready (better prepared anyway). I drove to the Fair-grounds the Friday evening before - the outhouses were in place! Saturday eve, I went over to the north parking area and set up the tent (directly beneath a brand new overhead light - happy dance). To my surprise, the parking lot had been paved- since the Fair (half of it anyway- with lines too!). Sunday morning 5:00am - Perkins restaurant, volun-teers begin to arrive. I always count on Ivar and Dena Natins. Club Pres Dave Glennen was on hand. Some new members Matt and his girlfriend (last names I don’t remember). This couple hand gone to Davenport and then went on to Spring-field to see the Mile - In a Saturday heat race saw pro rider Tanner Dean involved in a vicious crash- head injury- that probably ended his racing career. AMCA regular Brittney Ol-son was watching this accident and announced her retirement from racing and her promotions company has closed up shop…wow.

Fall Swap Meet

Events

Club member Bob Hopf was the 1st guy in line and he got the early vendors settled. Remember that overhead light I had mentioned? It wasn’t turned on (really?) doesn’t pay to complain - just saying…The weather was perfect. Mother nature has been smiling on us the last few years - I cant tell you people how im-portant nice weather is for an outdoor motorcycle event! Thanks to Bob Hopf for picking up 12 dozen cin-namon rolls and apple frits. We took in $275.00 in cof-fee and donut sales- we didn’t sell out of donuts (people are getting healthy? What the…) We took in close to $2000.00 at the gate, so it’s likely that we made a prof-it. Typical swap meet- by noon the vendors were heading out. By 2:00 pm it was a ghost town… all is well that ends well. As an after thought it was discussed that next August, we’ll promote this event at the “Gearhead Get Together”.

The Ongoing Adventures of Tim Gadban

Member Stories

Robin & I just got back from Vancouver and my niece's wedding. We spent the last few days at Simon & Susan's cabin in Pender Harbor, which is just up the coast from Vancouver. My brother arranged for us to get a float plane back to the airport … a 4 seat de Havilland Beaver built in 1945. (Does Robin look nervous?)

Today, we catch up with Tim at… well, let’s let him tell it:

Tune in next week for another installment of “The Ongoing Adventures of Tim Gadban”.
