BMA Trainee Pathway

Adrian Micucci

▪ Multi-disciplined engineering consultancy with expertise in structural,

civil, traffic, waste, building services engineering and environmentally

sustainable design solutions

▪ Over 60 years in Melbourne

▪ Recently acquired by WSP

▪ Long successful track record delivering state of the art facilities over

multiple sectors including specialist fields of Pharmaceutical and

Laboratory

A BIT ABOUT ME..

▪ 2.5 years in manufacturing drafting

▪ 11 years in the Building Services

▪ 3 years as BIM Coordinator at Irwinconsult (Current)

▪ 23 Modelers in Building Services Drafting

IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES

▪ Originally developed in house

▪ Was not industry standard

▪ Contractors needed to start from scratch

▪ Drawings didn’t appear as well as older AutoCAD documentation

Screen Shots from In-house Template Drawings

▪ Change to BMA Template was the result of:

1. Specific project requirement

2. Internal requirements for change

3. Wanting to produce great documentation in 2D & 3D model

SPECIFIC PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

• Lessons learned from previous similar

project for same client

• Minimise contractor modelling and shop

drawing development time and cost

• High level of spatial accuracy

• High degree of consultant co-ordination

REQUIREMENT FOR CHANGE

• Improvement required to the dated in-house template

• More consistent looking drawings across all projects

• Reduce time and cost associated with template development

GREAT DOCUMENTATION

• Significant improvement in documentation quality

• Access to online content

• Highly accurate spatial allocation using downloaded equipment from BMA

website

• Improved level of 3D co-ordination through accurately modelled layouts

• Improved level of 3D co-ordination through accurately modelled layouts

• Seamless transfer to contractors for shop drawing development

• No remodeling required; only final contractor co-ordination

• BIM's immediate benefits has best

suited needs of the Mechanical or

Lead Coordinating trade.

• Digital Coordination

• Digital Coordination

• The 'BAD NEWS GUY'

• Embrace the coordination process

• Have meaningful and efficient

coordination meetings

• The work up front DOES pay off

• Essential that all trades are aware

of what is expected, the technology

to be used and are working to meet

deadlines together.

• A dive in approach at the start

• Can be a long lead time before

seeing the real benefits

• Fear of the unknown

• Technical staff turnover

• Training

• General lack of understanding

about the modelling process

• The benefits are being experienced

by a larger portion of the industry

• Technology is no longer the limiting

factor

• Ease of access to information – The

Cloud

• Many companies doing a level of BIM

by default

• The Industry is developing a realistic

understanding what BIM can be used

for

• No control or standards for the

Revit/modelling environments

• Large amount of time for

developing templates

• Early users could see the benefit of

an Industry Master Template

• Similar control issues with Family

creation

• Company's becoming 'Silos' with

regard to Revit development and

BIM development

• The BIMMEPaus subscription

solves all this

• Give delegated technical people

time to develop and learn new

technology

• Don't fear technology, by nature it's

always new!

• Get the mechanical or coordinating

trade on your project as early as

possible

• Adopt BIM within your Company -

Introduction

0.2 National annex with relevant national standards

There are several standards required for the successful

implementation of this document, relating to specific regions or

countries, that are currently not suitable for inclusion within an

international standard. As such, national standards bodies are

encouraged to compile and document the standards, relevant to

the region or country they represent, within a national annex.
