TrencheswerefirstdugbytheBritishandFrenchArmiesinNorthernFranceduringtheracetothesea.
TheaimoftrencheswastoactasabarrieragainsttherapidadvanceoftheGermanarmyfromwhichacounterattackcouldbemade.Atfirsttheywerequicklyandeasilyconstructedusingfewmaterialsotherthansandbagsandashovel.Theyweremeanttobetemporaryandeveryoneexpectedawarofmovementin1915.
