Welcome to Performing Arts at Bromsgrove School
Since the opening of our magnificent new Music School, Theatre and Concert Hall, we have seen a dramatic rise in the quality and the number of live performances. This year you can attend at least two, sometimes six events a week. The very significant increase in the number of students wanting to get on stage or onto the concert platform is evidenced in the many inclusive opportunities we offer; one of our great strengths is that you don’t have to study Music or Drama to take part. I would strongly recommend, therefore, the many House Drama and Music Competitions at all levels, as well as the three Eisteddfod Festivals and our great Cultures Connect Concert as genuine highlights in our Performing Arts Calendar and dates to be put into your diaries now.
Last year our musicians, achieved great successes, particularly at Prep School level, whose choir won a number of major national competitions. Thus, in the forthcoming Michaelmas Term, our
combined choirs depart for a singing tour in Salzburg over Half Term, while the Prep Choir takes centre stage at the Royal Albert Hall in November and at Westminster Cathedral just before Christmas.
Closer to home, further highlights in the first term include the St. Cecilia’s Day Autumn Concert in Routh Hall and what promises to be a spectacular production of Great Expectations, this year’s main Senior School Play, in Cobham Theatre. An equally highly anticipated treat, and a great opportunity to see our future dramatic talent emerging, is the annual Year 2 Performance in June 2020. Don’t miss the new Rock ‘n’ Roll concert at the end of the Lent term, or if jazz appeals more to your tastes, come along to the Jazz Concert where the theme is A Night at the Movies.
There truly is something for everyone this year, and opportunities for all to watch, listen or take part throughout the year.
Tim NortonDirector of Performing Arts
“The Performing Arts should lie at the heart of education as it should lie at the heart of society for it offers each of us the power to move or to be moved.
Music and Drama is what unites us as a community, connects us with our past and elevates us above all other species.
To sing, to play, to act for an audience is the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another what it is to be human.”

She makes her ESO debut as part of the orchestra’s celebration of Beethoven’s 250th Anniversary with a performance of his stormy Piano Concerto in C minor. Ruth Gipps was a musical genius ahead of her time, whose works abound in melodic inspiration. Her Cringlemire Garden is a touching and evocative portrait of the natural world. Year 7 and 8 Play A Midsummer Night’s Dream
In this specially adapted version of the play for younger actors, the thrilling battle between Oberon and Titania, and their warring tribes of attendants, remains the backdrop for sixty minutes of hilarious mistakes and misdirection. Puck, the roguish servant of Oberon, is the architect of the mayhem, as the love-struck teenagers fall for the wrong person; Bottom, the leader of an amateur dramatic troupe is transformed into a Donkey and Titania is… completely misguided. Shakespeare’s classic comedy brought wonderfully to life by pupils from Year 7 and 8.
