How To Enable Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring of cryogen levels and magnet status is included with all warranties

and LabScape Maintenance Service Agreements!

Remote Monitoring is possible through Bruker’s MICS software. If you do not have the MICS

application running, skip to appendix A.

Remote Monitoring is a new feature in MICS version 2.06d. If your installed version is out of

date and does not include remote monitoring, skip to appendix B.

In the lower right corner of the MICS Administration tab, you will find “BRUKER Remote Monitoring.”

Even if there is no SMTP server configured, the Bruker server can still receive push notifications from

your system. Click the “Configure” button.

v1.0 3/22

This popup will appear to start the setup. Click “Edit” in the lower left corner and fill in the installation

address.

v1.0 4/22

The “Edit” button will turn into “Save” and permit you to fill in the address, as well as a second address if

necessary/appropriate. Once that is complete, click on the Contacts tab and fill in information for at

least one contact.

If you try to Save the data before that, the following warning will popup.

v1.0 5/22

Fill out the form completely once you’ve clicked on the “Add” button. It is highly recommended to add

multiple contact persons to ensure you can be reached in due time.

If you forget a required field, the software will mention this.

Once all required fields are filled in, click “Save”, and the fields in both the Address and Contacts tabs

will “lock” and not be editable unless you enter Edit mode again.

Click on “Activate Remote Monitoring”, and the following message will appear -

If an internet connection is active, the window will indicate “Last contact” and a time/date stamp in the

upper right part of the window. If there is no connection, it will mention that transmission failed.

Close this remote monitoring pop-up. Remote Monitoring status is now found in the Administration tab

of MICS.

MICS must run at all times a user is logged on to the workstation to ensure

continuous monitoring of magnet status

If MICS is already installed and updated, the auto-run feature can be added manually:

For Windows:

starts#1TC=windows-7

For Linux:

How to Install MICS

For new magnets, a CD is included in the magnet manual with MICS software, and your magnet

BIS file pre-loaded

Why install MICS? MICS allows for independent local monitoring of the magnet status (He/N2 level

and other accessories) on the workstation connected to a spectrometer. It also allows Bruker to

remotely monitor the magnet status and send email notifications, reminders, warnings, and error

messages.

If the MICS disc is not with the magnet manual, or if it contains an outdated version of MICS, download

the latest version from:

https://www.bruker.com/service/support-upgrades/software-downloads/nmr.html

(Login required, registration is free)

Version 2.06d or higher is required to take advantage of all features of MICS

Selecting “MICS Support & Upgrades” will take you to the following page:

To check the most recently developed version of MICS, click “Display current MICS version” and a page

will open with the version ID and its date stamp in a plain text format.

If the MICS installation CD is missing, download an installation zip archive for the appropriate Operating

System (Windows 7 or Centos [Linux]) through the appropriate hyperlink.

The characteristics of individual magnets are stored in BIS files. For newer magnets, the BIS file is found

on the CD in the magnet book. If the magnet BIS file is not available, it can be downloaded or generated

as necessary through the BIS File hyperlinks:

The “Download BIS File” link opens the following page where you can input the magnet and cryostat

serial numbers and download an archived BIS file.

If the BIS file for the magnet is not found in the archive, click the “Manually Create BIS File…” link. The

page that opens looks quite similar to the “Download…” page, and it will prompt you for the magnet

identification numbers as well. After inputting those, if there is not a BIS file found for the magnet, the

webpage will inform you and request your email address.

v1.0 13/22

In the window that appears, right click the link to the .docx file and save it to the hard drive.

Fill in that document with the characteristics of the magnet and email the completed file to

[email protected] They will generate a BIS file.

Save the BIS file in C:\Bruker\mics\bis\.

If a BIS file cannot be generated, MICS can only be used to monitor the helium level.

In the .zip archive, or on the disk, there is a file called “install.bat” in the /install/windows/ directory.

Right-click that icon and select “Run as Administrator” to start the installer and the following will open.

Page 15: Bruker LabScape LabScape Maintenance Service Agreements! Remote Monitoring is possible through Bruker’s MICS software. If you do not have the MICS application running, skip to appendix

v1.0 14/22

Ensure that all sections are filled according to the configuration of the spectrometer and click the “Start

Installation” button in the lower right corner. If no SMTP server information is entered, a window will

open asking if you want to continue. Select “Continue.” MICS will then be installed.

MICS must run at all times a user is logged on to the workstation to ensure

continuous monitoring of magnet status

There will be an option to have MICS autostart after installing/updating the software. Click “Yes” so that

MICS will auto-run, therefore providing continuous monitoring of the magnet status.

The MICS program will appear as an icon in the lower right corner of the screen when running.

If MICS is already installed and updated, the auto-run feature can be added manually:

For Windows:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/run-program-automatically-windows-

starts#1TC=windows-7

For Linux:

https://docs.oseems.com/general/operatingsystem/linux/automatically-run-program-on-startup

When the installation is completed, you will receive the following notice.

To activate the remote monitoring refer to How To Enable Remote Monitoring

How to update to the latest version of MICS

If the MICS version is out of date, you can find the update script in the MICS home directory (usually

C:\Bruker\mics). For Windows 7, the script is called micsupdate.bat –

Page 17: Bruker LabScape LabScape Maintenance Service Agreements! Remote Monitoring is possible through Bruker’s MICS software. If you do not have the MICS application running, skip to appendix

v1.0 16/22

Right click on the file, and select “Run as Administrator.” When the script starts, it will display the MICS

update panel. Here you will find the currently installed version and an indicator if it is up-to-date.

Fill in the correct method and location of the updated MICS software (either from internet download,

already loaded ZIP archive, or CD). If MICS is currently running, the following message will pop up – click

on “Yes” to proceed.

Page 18: Bruker LabScape LabScape Maintenance Service Agreements! Remote Monitoring is possible through Bruker’s MICS software. If you do not have the MICS application running, skip to appendix

v1.0 18/22

This screen will appear with a number of settings

For a third-party magnet, there will not be a BIS file available, but if MICS is currently installed, it will

keep the current BIS file. If you’ve had to download one, be sure to provide its location, as well as to

ensure that the other correct options are checked (N2 level sensor, BSNL, etc.). Click the “Start

Installation” button.

When the installation is completed, the following will appear.
