MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Teri Yuvadee HornDirector of Marketing & Admissions

I was having a conversation with a friend one evening and she was sharing a story about her recent visit to Chiang Mai. She had gone elephant trekking and was sitting on an elephant bareback, with the mahout standing on the side. Somehow the elephant got spooked and for the first time in 18 years the

elephant went on a stampede and ran away with her sitting by herself on the back. After about 200 meters of the terrifying ride she fell off, got hurt, but lived to tell the tale.

Why am I telling you this story? Well this friend was from the US and when she told her father the same story he replied, “…Well honey, the ship will always be safe in the harbor, but that wasn’t what it was built for”. His response resonated with me.

Challenge. Adventure. Risk. Some of these things can either scare us or fulfill us. If we continue to stay in our comfort zones, our “bubbles”, we will never have the opportunity to see or experience anything new. At BSM we hope to challenge our students in one way or another. We hope to encourage our students to try new things, meet new people, build connections, and learn about something they may not consider interesting right now. Our student feature this month is an example of one – Check him out on p. 5!

Read and enjoy! If you have any feedback, comments, questions, or would like to share your thoughts, please feel free to submit them to [email protected]. We appreciate your support and are happy to have you as a reader of INSPIRE!

WHAT IS THE IMAGINE CUP THAILAND? The IMAGINE Cup Thailand is a software competition hosted by Microsoft, a regional division of a larger international competition, IMAGINE Cup. The competition has three categories: 1.) World Citizenship 2.) Innovation, and 3.) Games. Basically they give you the topics (different per category), and the winner of each category competes on the world stage for an opportunity to be selected by Microsoft for the finals. Ten videos/teams are selected from all the regional competitions and are invited to a location (this year Seattle, USA) to compete in the international finals.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE COMPETITION?I actually heard about the competition from my girlfriend. I wanted to overcome my fears, step out of my comfort zone, and gain new knowledge and experiences outside of the classroom. On my own, I like to watch movies and read books. Recently I’ve been reading a lot of self business type books. They tell you to look at everything around you and to do something different. If you keep doing the same things every day, you’ll see the same things every day, and you’ll never see anything new if you don’t do anything new. So I thought, why not?

SPOTLIGHT: Nuttapat (First) KhadeeWe would like to congratulate BSM student First Khadee for being part of the winning team in the IMAGINE CUP THAILAND! We caught up with First recently to ask him about his experience in the world’s largest student software competition.

WHO WERE YOUR TEAMMATES AND HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?They chose me. They said that I have a unique sense of thinking and like how I ask a lot of questions. For example, developers like to put in fancy things in applications, like putting in sounds and fancy animation in a PowerPoint, just to make it look extra cool or trendy. I’m the one that asks if the technology will actually help the customer.

WHAT WAS THE TASK GIVEN TO YOUR GROUP?From the topics provided for our category, World Citizenship, we chose the theme HIV/AIDS. The task was to develop anything we wanted that relates to it. Most importantly, the World Citizenship category focuses on the impact it will have on the people. The more impact, the more likely you will win.

WHAT DID YOUR GROUP DESIGN/DEVELOP?We developed a campaign for the mass society called “We Heart”. The purpose of this campaign is reduce the gap of discrimination for persons living with HIV/AIDS and the general public by providing a online community and website to raise awareness and to learn the right information. We also developed an extremely useful application for people living with HIV/AIDS to help monitor their progress and communicate with others who use the app as well.

“...look at everything around you and do something different. If you keep doing the same things every

day, you’ll see the same things every day, and you’ll never see anything new if you don’t do anything new.

So I thought, why not?”

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION? The conditions of the competition

SPOTLIGHTchanged all the time and we had to adapt. Within the group, everything was very smooth because we all spoke of our ideas openly. This allowed us to encourage each other throughout the competition.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS TO JOINING THIS COMPETITION? WHAT DID YOU LEARN?You get to meet a lot of people, so definitely the connections. You get to see many ideas that are so creative and imaginative from other teams that just blow your mind. You get real world experience because you have to present your product to customers (the judges) and they throw so many questions at you. It makes you realize and wonder why we did not think about that before. From there, you are able to improve yourself. Also, there is a good chance from this competition to truly become an entrepreneur and start your own business.

“If you don’t win, what are you going to lose?”

HOW DID YOUR EDUCATION AT BSM HELP YOU IN THE COMPETITION?I like the organizational structure here at BSM, it is more flat than vertical. You can walk through and ask anyone for help (lecturers, staff, etc). There aren’t many boundaries between the students and the teachers. I was able to go straight to the Managing Director to ask for advice and help easily. He helped me understand how to write the letters I needed in the competition and provided a valuable connection with a lawyer who helped me understand the

legalities of putting, for example, logos on my application.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COMPETITION TO OTHER STUDENTS? WHY OR WHY NOT? ANY ADVICE?Absolutely. If there is a chance out there, why not go out and get it? If you don’t win, what are you going to lose? Even if you lose, you get a lot of experience and it teaches you how to approach people. Advice? Stay focused. Don’t just give up when it’s not going the way you want. Keep going and see what may lie at the end of the road. It may surprise you.

WHAT NOW?Since the competition, I have changed my habits. I actively attend interesting seminars and meetings to give myself more chances in life. I recently went to a seminar at Sasin called “Life after College” and met the owner of FireOneOne, a creative software company. We got the opportunity to chat and he told me about his life and how he got his first million baht. I’m also looking to establish my own business in the direction of a software company beginning with We Heart. We are looking to create all kinds of software that help with day to day operations of business. Technology is not just an easy touchscreen,

game, or phone. There is so much “wow” possible that we have not yet touched that can better our lives. In the meantime, I’m currently finishing my BA Degree at BSM through Northumbria University and am presenting We Heart to clients in Bangkok.

WHEN YOU WERE WAITING FOR THE RESULTS/HEARD THE RESULTS, HOW DID YOU FEEL?We were so excited in anticipation, but we kept telling each other to not feel down if we didn’t win. We gained so much through the experience! When I heard the news, I literally froze. I honestly didn’t expect it because there was another team that I thought better fit the criteria of the competition. Our final video unfortunately did not get selected to compete in Seattle, but I know I’m going to keep moving forward from here. I developed a desire to create my own business during the process that wouldn’t change whether I won or not. It’s not the competition; it’s where you will go from there.
